    Importance of Construction Safety

    In the Philippines, one of the common jobs applied by the low-income earners are
    construction jobs. They do the physical activities in the project site starting from the level of
    basic laborers to skilled workers such as mason, steelman, welders, plumbers, electricians and
    so on. All are recognized as essential for the execution of the project plan with of course the
    proper supervision of the foreman, field engineers, project managers and other members
    involved, early from the planning stage up to the turnover of the project.
    Construction, according to US Department of Labor, is a high hazard industry that
    comprises a wide range of activities involving construction, alteration and/or repair. High
    hazard means there are expected life risks in the actual environment especially for those who
    execute the activity, therefore, construction safety should be the utmost priority of the concern
    management and each individual.
    There are different approaches we could take to learn construction safety. Options can
    be self-learning of the safety standards in the published books such as Occupational Safety and
    Health Standard of the Department of Labor and Employment or enroll in a 40-Hour BOSH
    (Basic Occupational Safety and Health) and COSH (Construction Occupational Safety and Health
    Training). With these approaches, we can simply learn basic awareness on how we could
    maintain a safe environment during construction and prevent uncontrollable accidents that
    might risk anyone’s life.
    We could start on the wearing Personal Protective Equipment or PPE in construction
    such as hard hats, safety boots, gloves, eye protection and so on. Being protected by PPE could
    prevent unexpected hazard to injure the workers seriously. Basic knowledge also on the
    equipment is with same importance to have damage control on site. There also considerations
    within the site which involves proper planning of storing, mobilization and installation of
    barriers and proper signages to control movement and prevent accidents due to falling,
    explosion of flammables, vehicular damages and many more. Lastly, being personally aware on
    what surrounds you is the most basic protocol before work execution to protect what’s nearby
    and yourself from accidents. In case of accidents, there should be area and representative for
    first aid which is commonly neglected by the small operating construction and high disregard to
    include health support could resolve a more critical status for the injured person.
    All of the preventive measures are a prior obligation of the project manages and safety
    officers. The construction supervisors and watchers, such as the architects, engineers and other
    officers are expected to do identify ahead of time the hazard, evaluate the situation and give
    immediate correction to prevent accidents which will affect the project’s construction timeline
    and financial obligations.
    In general, construction safety should never be disregard. The standards and preventive
    measures created by the law enforcers are expected to be executed effectively by the concern
    construction managers. By learning construction safety, there would be an assurance of control
    within the site and on the workers lives. And by having a safe and friendly working space, there
    will be an uninterrupted and productive working timeline which will both be an advantage for
    the workers and the company’s credibility.
