I. Determine whether the following sets are well-defined or not.


1.a. A = {2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, ...} Well-defined

II. Using set-builder notation and special symbolic names for specific sets of numbers, describe
the following sets.
2. The set of counting numbers from 1 to 10.
= {x ∈ N | 0 < x < 11, x is counting number}
3. The set of positive odd numbers less than 15.
= {x | x ∈ Z+, odd numbers < 15}
4. The set of integers from 1 to 10 that is divisible by 3.
= {x ∈ Z | 1 < x < 10, x is divisible by 3}
5. The set of positive real numbers between 1 and 3.
= {x ∈ R+ | 1 < x < 3}

III. Using roster-builder notation, describe the following sets. Moreover, determine the
cardinality of each set.

6.The set of prime numbers less than 25.

7. The set of letters in the word “integrity”.

IV. Determine whether each of the following sets is finite, infinite, or null.

V. Determine the cardinality of the following sets and give four subsets for each.
14. A = {l, o, v, e}
Answer:
n(A) = 4

15. S = {w, o, r, l, d}
Answer:
n(S) = 5

VI. Use the set-builder notation to describe each of the following:

16. {4, 8, 12, 16, 20, ...}

{x|x ∈ N, divisible by 4}

17. {0, 1, 4, 9, 25, 36}

{x|x ∈ N, first 5 perfect square numbers}

18. {-4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4}

VII. Let A = {2, 4, 6, 8}, B = {6, 9}, C = {4, 8}. Answer each of the following questions. Justify
your answers.

20. Is C ⊆ A?

No. It should be C ⊂ A because it is a proper subset. Every element in C is also present in A but
there are at least two elements in A which are not present in C.
21. Is B ⊆ A?

No. The correct is B ⊂ A, proper subset should be. Because not all elements found in another set.

22. Is C ⊂ A?

Yes. It is a proper subset. The reason is there are atleast two elements in A but not present in C.

23. Is B ⊆ B?

Yes. It is a subset. Both sets have the same elements which makes them equal.

VIII. State whether the following statements is true or false. Justify your answers.

24. {b} ⊆ {a, {b}, {c}}

True, because {b} is a set and its element can be found in the other set.

25. b ∈ {a, b, c}

True, because b is an element found in {a, b, c}.

26. {b} ∈ {a, b, c}

False, because {b} is a set, not an element of the other set.

27. b ⊆ {a, b, c}

False, because b is an element, not a set. Therefore, b can not be a subset of {a, b, c}.

28. {b} ⊆ {a, b, {c}}

True, because {b} is a set and its element can be found in the other set.

IX. Let A = {a, b, c, d} and B = {x, y}.

29. Use the set-roster notation to write each of the following sets. Moreover, determine the
cardinality of each set.
