Exercise 2.2
Sets
II. Using set-builder notation and special symbolic names for specific sets of numbers, describe
the following sets.
2. The set of counting numbers from 1 to 10.
= {x ∈ N | 0 < x < 11, x is counting number}
3. The set of positive odd numbers less than 15.
= {x | x ∈ Z+, odd numbers < 15}
4. The set of integers from 1 to 10 that is divisible by 3.
= {x ∈ Z | 1 < x < 10, x is divisible by 3}
5. The set of positive real numbers between 1 and 3.
= {x ∈ R+ | 1 < x < 3}
III. Using roster-builder notation, describe the following sets. Moreover, determine the
cardinality of each set.
P = {2,3,5,7,13,17,19,23}
n(P) = 9
L = {i, n, t, e, g, r, i, t, y}
n(L) = 7
E = {100,102,104,108,110....)
n(E) = ℵ0
9. {x | x ∈ Z and x = 25}
2
A = {5²}
n(A) = 1
IV. Determine whether each of the following sets is finite, infinite, or null.
V. Determine the cardinality of the following sets and give four subsets for each.
14. A = {l, o, v, e}
Answer:
n(A) = 4
{l, o, v}, {l, v, e}, {l, e, o} {o, v, e}
15. S = {w, o, r, l, d}
Answer:
n(S) = 5
{w, o, r}, {w, o, l}, {w, l, d}, {w, r, d}
{x|x ∈ N, divisible by 4}
VII. Let A = {2, 4, 6, 8}, B = {6, 9}, C = {4, 8}. Answer each of the following questions. Justify
your answers.
20. Is C ⊆ A?
No. It should be C ⊂ A because it is a proper subset. Every element in C is also present in A but
there are at least two elements in A which are not present in C.
21. Is B ⊆ A?
No. The correct is B ⊂ A, proper subset should be. Because not all elements found in another set.
22. Is C ⊂ A?
Yes. It is a proper subset. The reason is there are atleast two elements in A but not present in C.
23. Is B ⊆ B?
Yes. It is a subset. Both sets have the same elements which makes them equal.
VIII. State whether the following statements is true or false. Justify your answers.
True, because {b} is a set and its element can be found in the other set.
25. b ∈ {a, b, c}
27. b ⊆ {a, b, c}
False, because b is an element, not a set. Therefore, b can not be a subset of {a, b, c}.
True, because {b} is a set and its element can be found in the other set.
29. Use the set-roster notation to write each of the following sets. Moreover, determine the
cardinality of each set.
a. A x A
{(a, a), (a, b), (a, c), (a, d), (b, a), (b, b), (b, c), (b, d), (c, a), (c, b), (c, c), (c, d), (d, a), (d, b), (d,
c), (d, d)}
n (A x A) = 16
b. A x B
{(a ,x), (a, y), (b, x), (b, y), (c, x), (c, y), (d, x), (d, y)}
n (A x B) = 8
c. B x A
{(x, a), (x, b), (x, c), (x, d), (y, a), (y, b), (y, c), (y, d)}
n (B x A) = 8
d. B x B
n (B x B) = 4
A = {x ∈ R | –2 ≤ x ≤ 2} C = {x ∈ Z+| –2 < x ≤ 2}
B = {x ∈ Z | –2 ≤ x ≤ 2} D = {0, 1, 2}
A=B;C=D
