1 Types of Speeches

What’s

Speech
It is human nature to express thoughts and emotions. Thus, many
speeches or forms of communication in spoken language, made by a
speaker before an audience, have been created. Speeches are more
formal than talking or usual conversations. They are primarily delivered
to leave a remarkable message.

Types of Speeches
In the word puzzle below are seven (7) words that refer to jobs which
commonly require to deliver speeches. Try to look for them as fast as
you can to lead you to the types of speeches.

Were you able to hunt all the words that we are looking for? Let us look
at the following pictures if you got them correctly.

For the jobs written vertically, what do you think are their reasons or
purposes
for giving their speeches?

I give a speech to educate and to give an

inspiration to those students who are
suffering from their studies and give also a
lesson for the students.

I give a speech to persuade and I will

be trying to win people’s support for a
proposition concerning something a
community, a party, a council, a
government, a country might do.

I give speech to entertain and to be more

memorable and have our audience spread
our message for us. The best way to do
this is by wrapping the information in a
story. Better still, in a funny story.

5
For the jobs written horizontally, how do you think do they deliver their
speeches?

To deliver my report on television,

I always use manuscript speech.

To deliver my lines on stage, I

usually used to memorize it first.

To deliver my speech during campaign,

I usually use extemporaneous delivery in which
my speech is carefully planned and completely
rehearsed.

What I Have
Learned
From the lesson on the types of speeches, I learned that:

1. I will use the following types of speech according to purpose when:

A. Informative
1
0
Informative is mainly performed for
educating the audience on a new or
relevant piece of information on a
particular topic.
B. Persuasive

Persuasive is a text where the purpose

is to present a point of view to
persuade a reader.
C. Entertainment

Entertainment - to entertain/to give

someone amusement.

2. The three (3) types of speech according to purpose are also used in:

according to delivery when:

A. Manuscript This is the type of delivery used primarily by

formal speakers, politicians, business
executives, etc. when they prepare their
speeches well in advance. Manuscript
delivery takes all of that research,
organization, and outlining work and then
uses it to WRITE OUT THE SPEECH so it
looks just like paper. Then, the speaker reads
the speech off of the paper.

1
1
B. Memorized As the name implies, memorized delivery is
the step beyond manuscript delivery. The
speaker writes the speech out…...and then
memorizes the manuscript so he/she has no
notes, no manuscript, no “help” up there in
front of the audience.

C. Extemporaneous When speaking extemporaneously, you have

meticulously researched, organized, and
practiced your speech ahead of time…….but
it SOUNDS TOTALLY NATURAL. To
accomplish this, a speaker takes all of this
well-organized information and places it into
outline form.

D. Impromptu As the name implies, this is delivery with little

or no preparation. Impromptu delivery
happens when you get called on to answer a
question in a class or a police officer pulls you
over for speeding…...you have to give answers
fast, without the benefit of a lot of advanced
planning. We all deliver a speech with
impromptu style from time-to-time, but some
speakers do this better than others.

4. The four (4) types of speech according to delivery are also observed in:

A. manuscript
Manuscript speaking is the word-for-

memorization can be useful when
the message needs to be exact and
the speaker doesn’t want to be

C. extemporaneous Extemporaneous speaking is the

presentation of a carefully planned
and rehearsed speech, spoken in a
conversational manner using brief

D. impromptu Impromptu speaking is the

5. As a speaker, I should know my purpose and method of delivery before

giving my speech so…

As a speaker, I should know my intent and mode of

delivery before I talk, so that I can determine the
best way I can express my thoughts. In addition,
understanding the intent and best way to deliver a
speech will help the audience understand the
meaning of my speech, as well as help them better
react to it.
For example, when giving a speech to a group of
students or graduates, it is necessary to encourage
them to step forward and empower them to pursue a
profession or degree with11 which they will be

Speech Style
The way we communicate varies depending on a lot of factors such as
the speech context, speech purpose, and speech delivery. The form of
language that the speaker uses which [sic] characterized by the degree
of formality is known as speech style (Martin Joos, 1976:156).

Types of Speech Style

There are five (5) types of speech style that can be used in various
speaking situations. To know them, accomplish first the comic strip
below by sharing a day in your life as you go to school. Supply the
