A.1 General
The aim of this report is to give an overview and adopted mechanical design
requirements and for the Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Fire Suppression for
the Toll Plaza and the Tunnel to be constructed for the New Bicutan (NBX) Toll
Plaza.
The New Bicutan NBX Toll Plaza will require the systems to provide Ventilation
and Air Conditioning, Storm Water Disposal and Water Supply for fire suppression
required for the toll plaza facilities and the tunnel. The tunnel drainage system is
necessary to collect, treat and discharge the storm water and wastewater
resulting from fire-fighting operations, washing operations and leakage. The
tunnel operations and the supervision building will require provisions for both
water supply, distribution and wastewater disposal system.

1. TOLL PLAZA AND TOLL SUPERVISION BUILDING
The toll supervision building was provided with ventilation and air conditioning
system including all toll booths and ambulant tellers area. Jet fans were provided
for the toll booth to push out the smoke from the vehicles. Each toll both were
provided by 1HP window-type airconditioner. Electrical room and server room
were provided two (2) wall-mounted units since these rooms needs air-
conditioning for twenty four (24) hours.
1.2 Water Supply System
The Water Supply System for the supervision building shall be connected to the
existing waterline of Maynilad and provided with valves and required plumbing
fittings for the toilet and pantry. The most significant aspect of the Water Supply
requirement is the Tunnel Fire Suppression System. The water for fire
suppression shall be transported through a water main located within the tunnel.
The minimum flow and pressure criteria must be established prior to
implementation of design.
2. TUNNEL
2.1 Ventilation
The exhaust gases from cars and buses make ventilation necessary for road
tunnels. Many different systems have been used, ranging from full transverse
ventilation, i.e. ventilation air is supplied and exhausted via terminal devices
distributed along the tunnel, to longitudinal ventilation, which in one- way tunnels
takes full advantage of the air flow induced by the traffic. Compared to normal
duct or pipe flow, air flow in a tunnel is influenced by the moving traffic, changing
the air velocity profiles
The system adopted for this project is a longitudinal ventilation system and
provisions for the installation of a series of jet fans and exhaust fans strategically
located in the tunnel. Twenty two (22) number of jet fans are proposed and one

(1) number of exhaust fans. These are all provided with sensors for automatic on
and off operation.
The minimum headroom of the proposed tunnel as per the design is 6.50 meters.
Decreasing the number of jet fans may require jet fans of higher capacity and
bigger size. Installing bigger jet fans may not meet the required minimum
clearance requirement of 5.5 meters.
The most significant aspect of the Water Supply requirement is the Tunnel Fire
Suppression System.
The existing water supply system of Bicutan shall be used to supply water
to the proposed storage tank for fire water requirement. The tank capacity
was selected to accommodate the full fire protection demand of the tunnel.
The open approach to the tunnel, where the roadway extends beyond the
portal, is considered an extension of the tunnel and, therefore also
protected.
The water main within the tunnel shall be valved to separate sections to
permit repair of a damaged section while minimizing any reduction in fire
protection. This shall be accomplished by installing sectionalizing valves.

The piping material used for the fire main can be cast iron, ductile iron, or
steel of sufficient strength to withstand the maximum pressure of the
system. Sufficient means of compensation for temperature expansion and
contraction and projected structural movements must be provided.

The available pressure at opposing ends of the tunnel will vary due to the
difference in elevation. The fire hose valve located at the higher elevation
will be critical from the standpoint of maintaining a minimum pressure
requirement at all valve locations.
Hose connections are required within the tunnel and . these should be
conspicuously marked and located. Hose stations in the tunnel should
consist of a hose valve and a fire extinguisher. The valve thread should be
compatible with the standard used by the local fire department.
Fire Pump
The fire pump shall be of the centrifugal type, which has been specifically
rated and listed for fire protection service by the Underwriters Laboratory
(UL).
The fire pumps must be carefully selected based on the system resistance
characteristics curve, the pump performance curve, and the factors outlined
above.
Only approved equipment may be used for fire pump installations. The
pump manufacturer should be responsible for shop testing the pump
equipment, obtaining equipment approval, and providing certified pump
performance curves.
Motor controllers for fire pumps must be specifically approved and listed as
Fire pump controllers. An approved controller shall be a completely
assembled unit, wired and tested by the manufacturer prior to shipment,
and ready for service. Listed motor controllers may be used for any
configuration of automatic or manual operation.
