Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Using Base Ten

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): Second
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE2.NBT.1 Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens,
and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones.
MGSE2.NBT.4 Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits,
using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): www.kahoot.com

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☒ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
As a whole class, there will be multiple days of lessons on base ten. Including the different place values,
comparing numbers, understanding the value of numbers and how to explain base ten. This activity will be at
the end of the unit on base ten, but before the official test over base ten. My class will have played kahoots
before as a formative assessment, so they will be comfortable with the activity.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

This activity will be used as a formative assessment at the end of the base ten unit as a prep for the
summative test over the unit. Students will answer a variety of questions over the unit, and as the teacher I
will make sure all the students are ready and prepared for the test., reteaching anything they struggled with
as a whole.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Kahoot attached

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Kahoot shows each student on their personal device if they got the answer correct or incorrect. As the
teacher I will go over each question and have class discussion, especially if many students struggled with the
question.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the activity I will be able to look at the results and see if there is anything I should reteach or if I need to
have small group sessions with students to help them or see if they are ready for the summative test.

How will the data be used?

Data collected in from this activity will show me if students are ready for the summative end of unit test or if
additional teaching should take place. I want all my students to not just do well on tests, but really
understand what they are being tested over and remember the material. The winners of this game will
receive a class reward (such as a piece of candy). I will discuss the results with the class very vaguely. If there
is something majority of the class struggled with, it will be a conversation where we go over the material and
do some more activities to learn the material. A differentiated way I could reteach material is by having small
groups for students instead of class discussion. I could create projects where students work with their peers
to help each other learn the material in a new way.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My personal goal with this activity is to make sure all my students understand base ten and is ready for the

end of unit test. By having them play a Kahoot, they are engaged and having fun during the activity.

Reflective Practice:
I feel like using a Kahoot is a great way to test the students over a subject without them feeling stressed.
Kahoot is set up in a way where students engage in a competitive way. By each student having their own
personal device they are more likely to participate because they do not feel like they are being watched or
targeted if they answer incorrectly. A way I would further this lesson is by adding more questions or having it
where the top students get extra points on a quiz. I could also have students create their own word problem
using base ten.
