The social side of gaming: How playing online computer games creates
online and offline social support
by Sabine Trepte, et.al.
Abstract
Online gaming1 has gained millions of users around the globe, which
have been shown to virtually connect, to befriend, and to accumulate online
social capital. Today, as online gaming has become a major leisure time
activity, it seems worthwhile asking for the underlying factors of online social
capital acquisition and whether online social capital increases offline social
support. In the present study, we proposed that the online game players’
physical and social proximity as well as their mutual familiarity influence
bridging and bonding social capital. Physical proximity was predicted to
positively influence bonding social capital online. Social proximity and familiarity
were hypothesized to foster both online bridging and bonding social capital.
Additionally, we hypothesized that both social capital dimensions are positively
related to offline social support. The hypotheses were tested with regard to
members of e-sports clans. In an online survey, participants (N = 811) were
recruited via the online portal of the Electronic Sports League2 (ESL) in
several countries. The data confirmed all hypotheses, with the path model
exhibiting an excellent fit. The results complement existing research by showing
that online gaming may result in strong social ties, if gamers engage in online
activities that continue beyond the game and extend these with offline activities.

Hari ng Tondo
The album released in 2012 by Gloc 9, the MKNM: Mga Kwento ng Makata contains a figurative
literary composition. The album offers awareness or consciousness to people about society. Such purpose or
objective made me love all the songs under this album.
"Kahit sa patalim kumapit, isang tuka isang kahig." is an aphorism commonly used by people who
are suffering from the struggles of life. The mentioned aphorism was also in my favorite song entitled "Hari
ng Tondo. “The song was on the MKNM album of a rapper and singer-songwriter named Aristotle Pollisco
or widely known as Gloc-9. The song's inspiration was from the tragic life story of Nicasio "Asiong"
Rodriguez Salonga or prominently known as Hitler of Tondo. Aristotle's Hari ng Tondo is full of metaphors,
idioms, and symbols that are not only audibly pleasing. But also allow the listeners to interpret the hidden
meaning of the song.
History says that Tondo Manila is a community of chaos and gangsters. Nicasio Salonga was born
and grew up in this kind of city. Thus, since birth he witnessed all criminalities happening in his area. The
line "Baka mabansagan ka na hari ng Tondo" in the song, is an allusion used to describe Nicasio Salonga for
being the Kingpin of Tondo. The allusion, Hari ng Tondo was also the title of Aristotle's composition. In the
music video of the song, all of the scenes portrayed the life of Nicasio Salonga. Such scenes present the
cruelty of his birthplace, his law-against actions, imprisonment, betrayal of his friend, and his death.
The movie entitled "Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story" was also an inspiration of Gloc-9
in developing the song. Eventually, the Gloc- 9's Hari ng Tondo became the Original Soundtrack (OST) of
the movie. Utilization of the Hari ng Tondo as the OST results in a more dramatic and award-winning media
production.
