Introductory Message
Welcome to English 7.

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the


Schools Division of Cadiz City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to


guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The English 7 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The English 7 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning


even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful
and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully
read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

I. Learning Competency

1. Research a topic with support using two or three sources provided,


e.g. newspapers, website, video, images, podcast, print based materials
(EN7VC-IV-c-15)

II. Background Information for Learners

Information is not stagnant; it changes and evolves. It must be


constantly updated, and it must be made known to people who need this information
through different media. Media can be print or non-print. Newspapers, website,
video, images, podcast and other printed based materials are the media that can be
utilized in order to gather information for researching a certain topic.

Newspaper is a printed media and one of the oldest forms of mass communication in
the world. A newspaper contains news articles from around the world on different topics
like politics, sports, entertainment, business, education, culture and more. The
newspaper also contains opinion and editorial columns, weather forecasts, political
cartoons, crosswords, daily horoscopes, public notices and more.

A site or website is a central location of web pages that are related and accessed by
visiting the home page of the website using a browser. For example, the Computer
Hope website address URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
is https://www.computerhope.com. From our home page, you could get access to
any of the web pages (like this one) contained on our website.

Video is an electronic medium for the recording, copying, playback, broadcasting,


and display of moving visual media.

Images are physical likeness or representation of a person, animal, or thing,


photograph, painted, sculptured, or otherwise made visible.

A podcast is an audio file similar to a radio broadcast, that can be downloaded and
listened to on a computer or MP3 player.

Printed Based Materials are any publication, documents, or record including, but not
limited to the following: newspapers, magazines, books, photographs, drawings,
prerecorded magnetic audio tape.

Activity 2.

Read the newspaper article below and then answer the questions that follow:

How risky is coronavirus to the Philippines?

The Philippines is at a far greater risk of witnessing increased cases of the novel
coronavirus infection compared to other countries due to its proximity to China.

Philippines is known to have businesses in the country that are mostly owned by
Chinese people. One of these is the Philippine Offshore Gambling Operation (firms
offering online gambling services) where hundreds of workers from China are
working in the said firm. Also, in China, there are more than 230,000 migrant
Filipinos often referred to as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) are working there
particularly in Hong Kong and Macau as household workers.
After the coronavirus outbreak on 2 February, a temporary ban was imposed on the
workers from travelling to China or its special administrative regions. The ban was
lifted on 18th February allowing OFWs to return to Hong Kong and Macau.

According to WorldPop which ranked Philippines 14th among the 30 high-risk


countries, Manila is among the top 30 global cities receiving airline passengers from
18 high-risk cities in China.

Chinese nationals account for most of the tourist population visiting the country as
trade and cultural relations have increased between the two countries in the recent
past.
