DASA TREND
The trend of any dasa can be judged by dividing the dasa period into
three parts. These parts would focus on the results indicated by-
however the sequence in which the sign, lord or conjunction will give
result is dependent on the Sign in the Rasi dasa and on the Planet in
the Graha dasa. This is enumerated below:
RASI DASA
1. Rising of the Signs: There are three ways in which a sign can rise:
a. Sirsodaya (Rising by head) : Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio,
Aquarius.
b. Pristodaya (Rising by Back) : Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius,
Capricorn.
c. Ubhayodaya (Rising bothways): Pisces
Sirsodaya signs give results in the early part of the dasa, Pristodaya
signs give results during the last part of the dasa, whereas the
Ubhayodaya signs give results during the middle part of the dasa.
GRAHA DASA
From the cleanliness of the different part of the lamp, different things
can be predicted. For peace and auspiciousness at home, the lamp is
supposed to be clean and sparkling. There should not be any dirt and
carbon shoot in the body/ oil or wick.

BALADI AVASTHAS
SAYANADI AVASTHAS
The Sayanadi avasthas deal with the state of the mind, which
constantly moves between rest and activity. An analogy here will help
matters. A car can be driven as long as there is gas. When it is
stopped, it is either to fill it up, or to take rest. In this manner, we can
examine the state of the mind. The energy of the body comes from the
food one eats. We can only eat when we are comfortable, and this
happens in one of three places: swakshetra (home), moola Trikona
(work) or in exaltation (picnic/party). We only eat when we are both
at rest and comfortable. The intrinsic nature/energies of a planet
come from swakshetra sign. The energy from which he executes his
work comes from his Moola Trikona sign. The energy from which he
succeeds in all activities comes from his exaltation.
Hence, from the starting sign (Aries) and the starting nakshatra
(Krittika), every set of 3 signs/nakshatras are labeled odd-footed and
even-footed respectively. Just as the sex of signs was used in matters
relating to the human body, the footedness of signs applies in
manners which deal with dharma.
It is due to the union of purusha and prakriti (or Shiva and Shakti)
that creation takes place. Both of these are aspects of the same
Brahman. Just as we cannot define light without darkness, or the
future without the past, we cannot define one without the other. They
are mirror images of one another.
The past and future are images of each other (our current karma is a
reflection of our past actions). The younger brother (future) is the 3rd
house from lagna counting in the zodiacal direction. The older
brother (past) is the 3rd house from lagna counting in the anti-
zodiacal direction.
For a rational mind, it is difficult to believe how can the five Tattvas
(basic elements of nature), the fire, the earth, the air, the water and
the Ether govern which cannot be witnessed, govern the material
universe. However, when we try understanding what is that force
which governs that everything flow they do, what the rg veda call the
Rta or the ways of the creation, we tend to see that there is a common
thread which connects between all apparently diverse creation of the
universe. We see that all the creation process in the universe follows a
common them from the creation to dissolution. To appreciate this I
shall put forward the creation and dissolution cycle of three divergent
things, where we shall see that the theme is the same in all of them.
Our own creation starts with the incoming of the energy in the form
of soul from the father which marks the predominance of the fiery
element. We can take the birth process itself marked by the fiery
element. Once the infant is born, he starts learning the basics of
everything; he grows up and starts earning, and all these processes of
sustenance is signified by the earthy element, which stands for
consolidation and sustenance of the creation.
We note here in all the cases that, the creation process start with a lot
of dynamism, which requires a lot of energy and marked by a state of
high degree of dynamism and fluidity. This state of creation is
represented by the fiery element, which means action. Thus this is
associated with the Dharma principle of human evolution, which
means protection by righteous means.
The next state is the state of going beyond the limitations of the
material existence, intellectual development and development of art
and culture. This state is associated with the Airy element and the
Kama Principle. We note here that the airy signs of the zodiac,
Aquarius, Libra and Gemini represent the intellectuals.
The next state is the state of dissolution of the liberation from the
material boundaries. This process is represented by the watery
element and is associated with the Moksha principle.

Notes on Bhagyapada (A9)
BHRIGU NADI SAYS:
3. If Jupiter is placed with the pitripada, the father is long lived. The
native’s father is a worshipper of Shiva and respects Brahmins. The
father gets less happiness in native’s childhood whereas becomes
more fortunate during the middle age of the native. He is well known
among the ruling class, is of renouncing nature and is loved by
kinsmen. Under such circumstances, the native shall construct
temples/ religious places/ wells/ ponds, live in the colony of
Brahmins and in old age be a holder of good landed property because
of his son.
4. If Venus conjoins the pitripada, the native’s father shall have long
life and is happy. His father is a devotee of lord Shiva and at times of
lord Vishnu. The father has trust on Gods and Brahmins and has
happiness from his parents (native’s grandparents). The father has
two wives and is enjoyer of life, sagacious and intellectual.
6. If the father’s Lagna falls in the trines to the pitripada of the native,
the death of the father shall happen during the dasa of fourth lord
counted from the pitripada.
7. If Rahu joins the pitripada, the native’s father shall have a virtuous
son from the 2nd wife.
DEVAKERALAM SAYS:
RAHU IN NINTH
Rahu is the planet that signifies adharma and hence is the primary
cause of Rebirth, which is based on the misdeeds (adharma), which
we had committed in our last birth. On the contrary 9th is the house
of Dharma and the most important house of the Dharma Trikona as
far as the duties and obligations are concerned. When the primary
karaka for Adharma goes to the place of dharma, the 9th house that
signify the religious shrines and dharmic places, he feels completely
dejected for the crimes he has committed through out his life. The
feeling that it is better to die than to live with the heavy burden of
sing on his head, engrosses him completely. He becomes remorseful.
Between the two karakas for 9th or dharma, viz., Jupiter and the Sun,
Sun becomes a yogi planet and does not do much harm to Rahu.
However, Devaguru is agitated, when the devalayas or the place of
worship is desecrated by the presence of Jupiter. Jupiter’s ire is
unfathomable, when he becomes angry. Such severe beatings he gives
that Rahu is taken to the state of dying. No, wonder when Jupiter gets
agitated, all sins are burnt through the sacred fire or Pavitra Agni of
the Devaguru.
This shall be interesting to note here that Rahu gets into debilitation
in the 9th house of Natural Zodiac, ruled by Jupiter. The sign
Sagittarius is again a agni-tattwa rasi, which has the power to burn all
sins. This one of the reasons, why agitated Jupiter show widespread
fire during the Manduka Dasa.
MOON IN EIGHTH (CHANDRASTAMA)
Thus being a significator of Mind and body, if Moon goes to the house
of death or one of the houses Moksha Trikona, it gets a terrible shock
while it faces the true identity of our soul and that we all would die
one day. Such position of Moon ruins the health of the native and the
mind is also adversely affected.
Hence, the Moon being the main life giving principle goes to the
eighth house of death, she is thoroughly beaten up by the karaka of
8th, the Saturn, the main principle of disease and hard work.
This is again interesting to note that Moon gets debilitated in the 8th
house of death of Natural Zodiac, which is opposed to the 2nd house
of Sustenance.
SUN IN TWELFTH
We can see that 12th is the house of exaltation of Venus in the natural
zodiac. Wherever Shukra (Sex, Passion) is strong, Sun is rendered
weak, which is why Venus debilitates Sun. The natural trait of the Sun
is to stay away from the materials of pleasures and perform his duty
of upholding Dharma diligently. In the places of pleasures, Sun is not
allowed to perform his duty.
This is a well-known fact that among shadripus, which causes the fall
of dharma, the ripu of Matsarya or sex causes the greatest fall. This is
why anyone who has taken birth on tithes ruled by the Sun, he should
overcome the weakness signified by Venus, as per Astadala Padma
Scheme.
JUPITER IN THIRD
Jupiter is again the prana of the Life force and hence also called the
Jiva, where as Mars is the Mrityu karaka. When Jupiter goes to the
3rd house, the house of death, the life force diminishes, more so
under the effect of Karaka Mars.
When we look at the ayana of planets we see that the ayana of Rahu is
opposite to that of Jupiter. Hence wherever Rahu is strong, Jupiter is
rendered weak. In the Kalachakra we see that the Kala of the Dik
goveren by Jupiter, is ruled by Jupiter and hence any Jupiterian
activity is prohibited in the Rahu Kala.
VENUS IN SIXTH
Jaimini has given a dictum Shasta Shukra Marana Karaka, which says
Venus in the 6th becomes Marana Karaka. Why this is so?
Sixth is the house of Service and Venus is the karaka of Pleasures, the
two opposites. What shall we expect when the chief karaka for
pleasure is asked to serve others! In the natural zodiac, 6th is house of
debilitation and the sign Virgo symbolizes a virgin (the purest). Hence
at this place Venus becomes incapable to enhance its own Karakatva.
The two karakas for the 6th, Mars (Enemies) and Saturn (Servant). In
the Kalachakra this is clear that Mars obstructs the ayana of Venus.
Hence none of the Venusian activity shall be performed in the Mars’s
Kala. Moreover Saturn signify hard work, which is not suited to
pleasures and luxury seeking Venus and hence she goes to the
Marana Avastha, if placed in 6th.
SATURN IN LAGNA
Now in the natural zodiac too Saturn gets debilitated in the first
house Aries, where the fiery Sun gets exalted. Here Sun opposes the
lethargy and sluggishness of Saturn and wants it to be fast, jovial and
forces it to promote the significations of Sun. Now in mythology,
Saturn represent Mahakala, the son of Sun from Chaya. Because of
treachery of his mother, Sun can’t stand him and wherever Sun
becomes the strong karaka, Saturn becomes weaker.
CHAPTER 3
Friday, June 25, 2004
Neechabhanga Rajayoga (Pt. Sanjay Rath)
1. The lord of the sign of exaltation of the debilitated planet is in a
kendra to Lagna or Moon. For example, if Mercury is debilitaed in
Pisces, the Mercury itself which is the lord of Virgo, the sign of its
exaltation, should be in a kendra to Lagna or Moon. Thus, Mercury
attains neechabhanga if eithe lagna or chandra is in any of the dual
signs. It is for this purpose you find that dual signs give good
communication abilities and produce many writes etc. Another
example: If Saturn is debilitaed in Aries, then if Venus, the lord of
Libra its sign of exaltation is in a kendra to the Lagna or Moon,
Saturn gets neecha bhanga or cancellation of debility.
CALCULATION
1. The moment of birth is always considered from the Sunrise or
Sunset. So the start of the vighatikas for finding the ruler of the
moment of birth has to be reckoned from the Sunrise or Sunset based
on birth happening before of after the Sunset.
2. The time of birth elapsed after Sunrise of Sunset is converted into
Vighatis. (1 Hr = 2.5 Ghati = 150 vighati).
3. The ruler of the vighatikas is based on the sequence of the lords of
the weekdays (Su-1, Mo-2, Mars- 3, Me-4, Ju- 5, Ve- 6, Sa- 7, Ra- 8,
Ke- 9), starting from Sun. To arrive at the lord of the ruler, divide the
Vighatis arrived at the previous step by 9 and round it up to the
higher interger and count that number from Sun.
a. The Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Rahu are males. In the example, the
planets Rahu ruled the semi-nadi amsa to give a male child.
c. Mercury rules the female eunuchs while Saturn rule male eunuchs.
However this should be predicted only if specific combination for
such a birth exist in the conception chart. Else, Mercury will indicate
a female child as Saturn indicates a male.
From time immemorial the rishis, started all the activities of the day
with the Sunrise. However, this does not mean that at that point of
sunrise, the upper limb of Sun has actually risen on the horizon,
rather it was based on the moment they could see the first ray of Sun
on the horizon. We know that due to a phenomenon called refraction,
the Sun seems to have risen on the horizon a few minutes before the
actual rise of the upper limb. As this is the moment, when we can see
the first ray of the Sun, it heralds the start of the day and all
reckoning should happen from that moment of Sunrise.
So in short, the Sunrise definition for the purpose reckoning the birth
time is the apparent rise of the Sun’s upper limb.
INTERPRETATION
The single most important planet in a horoscope, which has the most
substantial impact in the life of a native is this janma vighatika graha.
This is because, a planet which can determine the sex of the native is
a link between the karma of the past life, which has to be manifested
in this life. Thus the lordship, placement and yogas of this planet has
the most significant impact in the life of the native.
ILLUSTRATION
Sunrise: 5:28:58 am
Sunset: 6:29:27 pm
Janma Ghatis: 21.25 - 18.49 = 2.76 hrs; Ghatis= 2.76*2.5 =6.9
Ayanamsa: 23-20-38.76
Sidereal Time: 18:23:00
Janma Vighatis = 6.9*60 =414
Janma Vighatika Graha= Reminder of 414/9 = 4+1+4 = 9 (Ketu)
Interpretation:
-------------------------
Ketu is exalted and this shows male birth. Ketu is the mokshakaraka
and defines the main objective behind the action of the native is to get
liberated from this life of bondage. The aspect of Jupiter from the
Lagna in pisces, gives him the knowledge of the maharishis through
tradition (Jup+Ketu) to take Jyotish to the direction of spiritual
upliftment of human kind.
Ketu is placed with the AL, shows that in this material world, he
would be identify his goal of life to as spiituality and shall join a
spiritual organisation. Because this happens to be the 10th house
from Lagna, the focus of the native shall be to keep doing his work,
without any benefit from the world (Ketu) and renouncing and
material benefit in return.
There is no doubt, that the native has given a big boost to the
spirituality (Ketu) in Jyotish (Jupiter) given to him from tradition
(Jup+Ketu) and is his sole purpose in this life (10th house placed with
AL).
Sunrise: 6:41:10 am
Sunset: 5:22:04 pm
Janma Ghatis: 9.7850
Ayanamsa: 23-41-34.86
Sidereal Time: 19:14:53
Janma Vighati: 9.7850*60 = 587.1
Janma Vighatika Graha = 587.1/9 = 2.1 = 3 = Mars
Interpretation:
-------------------------
The placement of Mars with two male planets Rahu and Jupiter,
given male birth.
The placement of the lord of Birth, Mars in the 5th with Jupiter and
Atmakaraka Rahu, sets the focus of life to learning and reaching
towards self actualization or self-realization as Mars happens to be
the lagna lord.
Sunrise: 5:27:59 am
Sunset: 6:12:49 pm
Janma Ghatis: 22.6979
Ayanamsa: 23-30-27.22
Sidereal Time: 12:56:52
Interpretation:
------------------------
Mars is a male planet giving a male birth. Mars is the Atmakaraka of
the native and is placed in the 9th house with Mercury and Sun and
sama - saptaka with the Lagna lord Jupiter. This shifts the focus of
the native’s life to the Rajayogas happening in the 3rd and 9th axis.
Mars is the 5th and 12th lord and is placed in the 9th house and
aspected by Jupiter, constituting the potent Guru mangala Yoga. The
native is a keen learner and has started learning astrology at a very
early age. The focus of the native’s life is rotating around 5th, 12th
and 9th, showing that the native gets most satisfaction by learning
and teaching. The focus of 12th house shows that the native shall be
generous as Moon is placed in the 12th house.

Judging placement of a Planet in a House
We could go by step by step methodology to understand this. The
steps follow:
Now the planet under consideration, i.e., Sun shall promote the
significations of the Karakas with whom Sun is friendly and shall
damage those with whom Sun has enmity. Now Sun the karaka for
Lagna and hence it shall make the person conscientious and full of
energy and drive. Its a friend of Jupiter and hence shall make the
person intelligent and wise. It is a friend of Moon and hence shall
make the body free of diseases.
Now there can be variety of intensities of results such as. When such
Sun is in cancer, Moon's karakatva is very strong there and thus the
person shall enjoy good health more than Scorpio, where Moon
becomes naturally weaker. Also Sun in Pisces, Sagittarius and Cancer
shall be more intelligent than any other signs, as these are the places
where the Jupiter is very strong. Just think of Vivekananda, having
Sun in the Sagittarius Lagna.
Similarly, Aries and Leo native shall have lesser hair on the head than
Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius native, as in these houses the Karakatva
of Saturn shall be stronger.
From 2nd Sun is placed in the 12th house, which is a marana karaka
sthana, this shows that the native shall have defective eye sight.
However if Sun is exalted, then the weakness of Sun is cancelled to
some extent, salvaging the eye sight. The cause of the weakness of
Sun is Saturn being the karaka for the 12th house. If Saturn aspects
such Sun, then it becomes difficult to salvage the eye sight.
From 5th, Sun is placed in the 9th house, a trine and shall promise
good position, status and authority. The cause of strength of such Sun
is Sun and Jupiter both being the karaka for the 9th house. The
influence of Jupiter on such Sun shall be helpful in giving power and
authority to the person.
From 9th, Sun is placed in the 5th house, and hence shall protect the
9th house of Father and Dharma. Thus such persons shall be having a
righteous life and happiness from father.
For example, Sun aspects the 7th house. The karaka for 7th is Venus,
who debilitated Sun and snatches the independence from him but
chaining him under relationships. But As Sun is strongly influencing
the Lagna, Such persons will not fall into relationships easily and
always try to have an independent life style. However this is not so
strong, when Sun is in Libra as the influence of Venus is pretty strong
on the Sun.
Step 4: Argala
Read the argala article posted in this site.
2. The 5th house is the house of Chitta (inner self) and this shows how
much harmony do we have within our self. If this is afflicted then the
person can become insane. The person who is peaceful within can
take more miseries than someone who is not. It is not a good thing to
have enemies of Jupiter in the 5th such as Saturn or Rahu.
5. In all the cases, one has to see the reinforcing factors and salvaging
factors. The factors which can reinforce evil is papakartkari yoga,
aspect of natural malefics or placement of natural malefics in strength
in the kendras or trines to the bhava. The factors which salvage are
the lord of the house, karaka of the house aspecting the bhava or
placed in kendra or trikona to the house, aspect of natural benefics
etc. One has to study all these before finally pronuncing the results.
The extent of affliction shall decide, the level of affect on the houses
under consideration.
Suicide tendencies are seen when the fourth house is under affiction.
4th is the sukha-sthana and affliction to that house cause depression
which might culminate in suicide. In the horoscope, we find that the
4th house is under heavy affliction because of Saturn-Mars fight and
the lord of 4th has gone to debility. The 5th house shows inner
harmony and such thing like suicide can occur if there is strong
internal unrest and turmoil. We see that the 5th lord is placed in
Amavasya yoga and aspect by Rahu (the dire enemy of the Karaka
Jupiter) from the 9th house. More to this the Karaka for inner
harmony Jupiter is placed in the Rahu's house and in the 8th from
the Sign, sufficiently weak to protect its significance.
This person died by drinking alcohol. Can we find out why- Alcohol?
A person can be addicted to alcohol if Saturn (karaka for Alcohol)
aspects the lagna by Graha Drsti (Desire to take alcohol). The cause of
death can be found from the stronger of AL and A7 (3rd and 8th from
them). Here A7 is stronger and hence 3rd and 8th from it can show
the cause of death. 3rd from A7 is empty but aspected by Gulika and
Mandi who rules poison. The 8th house is aspected by Rahu and Ketu
and the house being Saturnine. Showing that the native has faced a
difficult death, whereby he poisoned him by overdrinking of
Alcohol. The aspect of Rahu on 8th on a saturnine house is a sure case
of Dustamarana (Bad death) Yoga.
Here we see that three benefics are placed in the 4th and although
Sun is placed, it is weak because of debilitation. This shows a good
fourth house. However, this doesnot remain the same when we
cognise the presence of the Malefics Rahu and Saturn in the 12th and
2nd, causing papakartari yoga. More than that, you notice the
functional nature of the planets now. Merc is 3rd and 12th lord, Sun is
a maraka and Jupiter is the 6th lord. Venus is although the lord of 4th
is also the badhakesh. Now you can see that functionally all of them
are causing troubles.
The Lagna is placed with Mars and Ketu showing pisacha badha,
whereby both the Lagna and Moon is afflicted. This shows use of
black majic or such things on the native. The protector of the Lagna,
the lagna lord is placed in the Badhaka Sthana, showing the strength
of the yoga for suffering from black majic. The 4th and 5th lords are
placed in the 6th, showing that the native might be troubled by the
enemies. Now the salvaging factors are the placement of the Sun, Me
and Jup in the kendra to the Lagna and their aspect on the 4th and
5th house. Moreover Jupiter is exalted and is causing fruitful
gajakeshari yoga. Thus the three planet combinaton, Jup, Sun and
Mercury can help the native.
The best thing about this is that, Jupiter is the ista devata of the
native and is placed with the Atmakaraka Sun. So worshipping
someone represented by Jupiter, on a Monday (Jup, placed in Moon's
sign) in Jupiter's hora, can take the person out from the troubles he is
facing because of Black majic etc. The aquarius shoola dasa is going to
start on 12-08-2003, where the trouble shall increase and the native
is strongly advised to take any remedy. After the next dasa starts,
terrible rudra yoga shall also manifest, causing accidents, problems of
blood etc. Doing rudra-abhishekam in a shiva temple is the only
remedy to the Rudra yoga.

The concept of Argala
INTRODUCTION
Here is a small writeup on Argala to ignite your curiosity more and
give some guideline on working with Argala. Study this and try out
the argala and its obstruction in your seconds house. It is written in
jyotisha shastras that signs/ planets placed in the 2nd, 4th and 11th
from a house/ karaka have argala to it. Whereas planets placed in the
12th shall oppose the argala of 2nd, 3rd will oppose 11th and 10th
shall oppose the argala of 4th. The secondary argala is caused by
signs/ planets in 5th and 8th from a house/ karaka and planets/ signs
in 9th and 6th from it shall oppose it. Lets see what is the practical
use of the concept of argala.
THE CONCEPT
We know that none of the activities in this world happen in isolation.
There are many factors which each activity in our life. Argala is a
JyotishTool to analyse how the argala influence our activities. To
understand thislets take an example:
Lets find out what are the factors which influence our worklife or
karmakshetra indicated by the 10th house. They are:
1. Our Attitudes and Personlity
2. Intelligence
3. Drive and Vitality
4. Health
5. Job-Satisfaction
6. Income from the Job
7. Friends circle
8. Stress and Tension
9. How much tiring the job is?
11th house
6. Income from the Job
7. Friends Circle
8th house
8. Stress and Tension
9. How much tiring the job is?
Now we see that the common link between these three houses are
that, they have argala on the 10th house or work. Now the planets
placed in these houses shall positively or negetively affect the work.
Like if Rahu is placed in the Lagna, the person shall have no job
satisfaction and prone to take wrong decisions at job as Rahu is an
enemy to the Karaka for Intelligence and wisdom, Jupiter.
Now lets see how to analyse the argala of a planet on a given house.
We shall take a step by step approach to look at that:
1. Find the Karaka of the House under focus.
For the present case, this happens to be 10th and the karakas are:
a. Sun- Recognition at workplace
b. Mercury - Intelligence and communication
c. Saturn - Persistence, Patience and Hardwork
d. Moon- Nature of Workplace
2. Find the relationship of the planet causing argala and the karaka of
the house, If the relationship is friendly then that will have positive
influence on the significations ruled by the Karakas under
consideration.
Here we have to look at two things:
a. The influence due to the natural nature of the planet
b. The influence based on the house (11th, Lagna, 8th) causing the
argala on the concerned house (10th)
Lets take an example, where Jupiter is causing Argala from the 11th.
This shows that, the native shall get due recognition at the workplace
as Jupiter is a friend of Sun (point a). Because of the Subhargala,
there will be some good frinds who shall help the native at his
workplace (point b) and he will get pretty decent income
commensurating his work (Point b).
3. Find the Karaka of the House, where the Argala causing planet is
placed. The extent to which the Argala causing planet shall promote
or diminish the result of the house under consideration is based on
how much support it is getting from the Karaka of the house it is
placed.
We know that the karaka for gain is Jupiter for the 11th house. If
Jupiter is placed in the 11th, then the person's income is supported.
4. Find the Lord of the house, where the Argala causing planet is
placed. Along with the Karaka, the dispositor of the Argala causing
planet can support or oppose it based on its relationship with the
karakas of the house under consideration and also the argala causing
planet.
5. Virodhargala:
Virodha means opposition. Here we shall see the strength of
opposition on existing argala. More planets or stronger planets in the
virodhargala causing house show one of the following situation.
Now if a person is having some yogas with Sun and other planets,
such yogas can be triggered if the person goes to temples and
religious places, ruled by Sun, or work with his father or such
activities. Hence, to undestand, which planet is affecting a person in
what way, the Jyotish is required to be watchful of all the happening
in the surroundings of the native. If the native comes with a
horoscope, to see which planet is causing trouble, one can very well
be watchful of the surroundings to see the nimittas (Omens) and can
know which planet is triggered at that moment.
Even though the Sun covers 30deg in the zodiac in one solar month
that doesn’t form a basis and somebody might ask, why not take a
solar month of20 days whereby Sun would cover 20deg in the zodiac
with 18 zodiacal signs and 18 solar months. This looks very arbitrary
unless we have a firm basis which cannot be questioned. We can
arrive at that when we see the relative motion of two luminaries who
guide our life the most, the Sun and the Moon. Both are equally
important, what is Sun for the Day, we have Moon for the night. We
know that Moon takes approximately 29.5 days after one conjunction
with Sun to return back and conjoin it again. Thus we have the
duration covered by Sun between two consecutive conjunctions of the
luminaries alone approximate month. This corresponds to 12 sinodic
month or soli-lunar month. When we add up the degrees covered by
the 12 sinodic month, we shall fall short of 6 degrees, which if we
distribute among the 12 months, make each month of 30 deg of solar
motion.
The sign which is exactly above the head or meridian becomes the
Mid-Heaven or the Xth house. Let’s take a case to visualise this. Let’s
say for a native Sagittarius is rising at the Horizon when he took birth.
This means that the signs Capricorn, Aquarius till some part of
Gemini is below the horizon and will rise in that order. The sign
which had risen just before the birth was Scorpio and a while ago it
was Libra. If we distribute the day into four parts, each part being 6
hrs long, we can say that just before 6 hrs of birth Leo was rising.
However, at birth, which happens to be 6 hrs from the point of time
Leo was rising, it has moved exactly above our head. When we count
zodiacally from Sagittarius to Leo, we see that Leo happens to fall in
the 10th house from the Ascendant. Thus the sign which is exactly
above the head (Zenith) during the birth becomes the MC/Mid-
heaven/ Xth.
Similarly the sign which was setting in the western horizon during the
birth is called is the Descendant as it is descending down the horizon.
This is exactly opposite to the ascendant. Thus Gemini being exactly
opposite to the Ascendant becomes the descendant to the native. This
always falls in the 7th house from the Lagna or Ascendant.
The 4th house which would rise after 6 hrs of birth is in the Nadir as
opposed to the Zenith. This happens to be at the lowest end of the
horizon.
The signs from Descendant to the Ascendant which had already risen
at the time of birth remains above the horizon and forms the visible
half, whereas the signs from the Ascendant to Descendant which are
yet to rise forms the Invisible half of the zodiac. The terms are quite
self-explanatory as we can only see those signs which are above
horizon and forms the visible half and those who are below the
horizon remain invisible and form the invisible part of the zodiac.

Lagna, Paka Lagna & Arudha Lagna (Pt. Sanjay Rath)
INTRODUCTION
The progress of Jupiter through signs has been given vital importance
in Jyotish as man is a spiritual being having material experiences and
this interaction between the atma and the body occurs through the
paka lagna for which the karaka (significator) is Jupiter. Jupiter
filters the thoughts that send impulses to the atma and the atma
replies. Jupiter is the real representative of God as he does the
filtering and cleansing of thoughts because of which the atma is
capable of continued existance within the body. If Jupiter did not do
the filtering and cleansing of thoughts and all were allowed to be
experienced by the atma, then every soul that has incarnated as the
selfish human being form will die within a few years. It is for this
reason that Jupiter gives long life and is capable of averting
apamrityu and all sorts of evils and is a karaka for so many houses..all
good houses.
Now that the lagna has got the input from the Moon through its
desire filter and from Jupiter through its memory, supreme
intelligence and goodness filter, the lagna has to take a decision. The
lagna (individual intelligence) takes millions of decisions everyday.
The Lagna consults its own intelligence, own memory and own nature
(Sun Karaka) and arrives at a decision. Most of the time the decision
is not perfect as the Sun lacks the supreme goodness of Jupiter and
has an element of 'ahamkara' associated with its intelligence. More
often the lagna tends to approve the decisions of the Moon (conscious
mind) ignoring the good advise of Jupiter. Not that the Moon always
gives bad advise, but its vision is very limited and sometimes it is in
harmony with that from Jupiter and at other times, it is in sakata and
other relations with Jupiter. The best situation is one called
Gajakesari.
For this we consult the Purana where Saturn wanted to learn the
dharma shastra and approached Brihaspati. Initially Brihaspati
explained the system in his ashram and the dakshina would be based
on his judgment. On learning of the latters identity as 'Sanideva'
Brihaspati was shocked and was prepared to teach everything and
would not take any dakshina and begged that he be spared from sade-
sati, kanataka and all those effects. Sanidev was adamant and insisted
that he would give dakshina. So it was finally settled that the
dakshina would be in the form of a reduced term of sadesati.
Brihaspati taught him all the dharma shastra and Sanidev became the
Dharmaraja having the complete knowledge of the implementation of
justice (that is why the balance Libra is the ninth house from
Aquarius). Brihaspati knew that Sani would pay his dakshina within
the year as was the practise then, and as was his practise, always
protected his body, mind and soul with the three mantras of the
Narayana Kavacha. One day as he plucked flowers for his daily
worship, the royal couple were in the neighbourhood and the prince
(Mercury) entered the garden to play. The prince was missing after
sometime and a frantic search yeilded nothing. The guards reported
to the king that a divine person, glowing with spiritual light was
collecting flowers and they saw blood dripping through the basket.
The king ordered that the person (Brihaspati) be brought to him and
told the guards not to harm him as it would be most unwise to even
touch such a personality before ascertaining the truth. The wise king
knew the danger to his kingdom if such great spiritual personalities
are hurt. The severed head of the prince was in the basket and blood
was dripping from the neck (note: chinna mastaka or cut-head is the
mark of Rahu). Brihaspati was shocked and truthfully pleaded his
innocense. But the evidence clearly visible pointed against him, so he
was held captive but was not tortured and the search continued.
Brihaspati realised that this was the effect of his sade-sati saturn and
made a silent prayer to the deity of saturn (Lord Shiva here as the
great destroyer {One vesha is Nataraja - the destroyer of the demon
Maya or illusion and untruth). The period ended then and there and
suddenly everyone saw that what looked like the head of the prince
was just the watermelon and the red fluid was not blood and instead
was the red water melon juice. The prince was found...
JYOTISH LESSON
(1) When Saturn causes sade-sati, or kantaka or has a bad dasa, and
the dosha (error) is to be caused by the hand of extra-terrestrial
forces, then it is called 'Adrista agantuta roga'. Prasna Marga advises
us to look at the badhak for this (as the object or the cause). For the
signs of Jupiter, Mercury is the badhak lord (Pisces - Virgo badhak,
lord Merc and Sagittarius - Gemini badhak, lord Merc). That why the
problem cause was related to Mercury the PRINCE. This can also be
related to planets in badhak house. The difference is that in the case
of badhak lord, we take the natual significations whereas in the case
of planets in the badhak house, we see the lordships of there planets
w.r.t. lagna.
(3) Parasara teaches that if Jupiter is strong and alone in Lagna, then
a single bow to the weilder of the Trishula shall destroy a thousand
sins. In this episode narrated in the Purana we see how such a prayer
(to the lord of Sani - Vayu tatva- Lord Shiva) by Brihaspati ended the
entire problem.
(4) Kalyana Verma teaches that if Jupiter is strong in Lagna then the
native is always protected by the 'Chakradhara'. In this episode we see
how Brihaspati is always proteced by the three mantras of the
Narayana Kavacha. This is the abhedana kavacha.
APPLICATION OF INTELLIGENCE
Intelligence is that which guides the mind in a direction that protects
(trai) it from any harm to
1) the body (Tana) like apamrityu, mrityu, roga etc, this is called
Tantra as composed of Tana & trai
2) the mind(mana) or itself from various mental turmoil and diseases
and is called Mantra as composed of Mana & Trai and,
3) the soul from of further sin by restraining it (Yantri) by the use of
mystical diagrams and other symbolic apparatus/ instruments and
the process of prana-pratistha etc.
Being the karaka of the dharma, it also shows the places where the
dharma is very strong, viz., the places of worship such as Temples or
churches. Also being the source of all knowledge it is associated with
Books which is meant to transfer knowledge. A person having Sun
very strong in the horoscope and influencing the Lagna/ Lagna lord/
Navamsa Lagna likes to read a lot and have a strong desire to gather
as much knowledge as possible.
Now lets take a kingdom, whose king is very lose and of not much
concern what is happening in the kingdom, what will happen to his
kingdom? No doubt it will doom. We know that a king has to be
righteous and firm to save his kingdom from any evil. Thus the
protection or following of the duties of the king, or for that matter the
duties followed by the father in a household requires a lot of Agni or
fire. Thus the Agni tattva of Sun can be associated with protection of
dharma. Later we see in one more article that the Agni tattva is
associated with the dharma Trikona.
Now this is the same fire which burns all the dark forces, which would
have captured our planet if Sun would not have risen for a single day.
It tirelessly rises everyday to give life to everyone on this earth
without fail for a single moment. If somebody has a strong Sun in the
horoscope, then it is unlikely that he will ever be possessed by a evil
forces. The rhythmic movement of the Sun’s everyday rising from
East and setting in West, without a minor deviation, associates
rhythm with Sun.
Now all the food materials cereals which are used for cooking and
feeding the world is associated with the natural sustainer, the Moon.
Among animals, we are most dependent the cow for she gives us the
milk which is responsible for our growth, development and vitality.
For this reason, Cow is regarded as the Mother in the Hindu society
and with respect is called "Gau Mata". However, the Milk, which gives
us energy and vitality, is associated with Sun.
As for the human birth the experiences of the mind holds the key to
the liberation, it can be only be achieved by directing the mind to the
right path. This knowledge was known to the mystics and saints of
yore and they said, for a normal mortal, the senses can snatch away
the mind from the right path to different divergent paths and said
that to protect the mind, mantra or the syllables of mystical sound
principles can be employed to put the mind on the desired path and
make it do things as per the objective of the soul. Thus even if we
admit that we are incapable in front of the might of the mind, we can
make us able by taking the help of the mystical chanting called the
mantras.
As the phases of Moon changes, the mind also changes from time to
time and gets into different shades of emotions based on that. This
can be verified with the fact that in lunatic asylums, it is difficult to
control the emotions of the lunatics on the full moon and new moon
day as. Thus different phases of the moon bring to us different
emotions. Now, this can be known by seeing the phase of the moon on
a given day, finding out who lords that particular phase of the lunar
phase and then see where that planet owing the phase is placed in
individual horoscopes. The lunar phase is known as tithi in Jyotish
and the lord of the tithi shall show its natural influence on everyone’s
mind on a given lunar day and the specific influences based on its
position in the horoscope. Also the weakness of the mind drawn by
the particular senses can be found by having more knowledge on the
Kalachakra or the cycle of Mind, which shall be discussed on another
article. For now we should remember that in Rahu’s tithi (Amavasya),
the weaknesses of Mercury shall manifest, whereby the mind
becomes very flickering and childlike whereas in the tithi of Saturn
(Pournimasya), the weaknesses of Mind shall be shown by Mars,
which shows tremendous agitation, anger and aggression. More can
found by the placement of these planets in the individual horoscopes.
UNDESTANDING MARS:
***Mars the Fiery one***
When seen from Earth, Mars is seen as a Red planet, it shows the
masculine side of the nature, aggressive, angry and assertive, the
traits which describe the fighter class called the kshatriyas. If the
planetary system is considered as a kingdom then Mars can be
visualised as the Commander in chief, who can lead a large army of
soldiers with his leadership and commanding abilities. However,
unlike the Sun, whose fire is more predominant of Sattva guna, which
takes us to the true path, the fire of Mars is more of Tamasik and is of
destructive nature. Thus wars and revolutions are shown by Mars.
However, when the same destructive fire is controlled by Jupiter, the
Devaguru or Advisor, it is brought under control and it can give the
highest level of knowledge. Maharishi verily described the highest
quality of Mars can make a person very knowledgeable in Jyotish
Shastra, which can be witnessed in Ruchaka Mahapurusha Yoga.
When Mars is under the influence of Jupiter, it forms the fruitful
Guru-Mangal Yoga. This yoga gives eternal quest to acquire more and
more knowledge.
UNDERSTANDING JUPITER
***Jupiter the Devaguru***
Being the preceptor of the Devas, the enlightened one, Jupiter is full
of wisdom and he only can show the right part towards realisation.
Among all faculties of human, Jupiter governs intelligence or the
"Dhi" shakti. There are many kind of intelligence, which is important
for sustenance in this material world and with the same reasoning;
animals are also intelligent, as they also know, how to keep
themselves alive. However, the only difference, between an animal
and human being is the presence of "Dhi", or the intelligence to
discriminate between the truth and untruth for self-development and
realization. Who else can govern such intelligence than the Devaguru
himself?
Being the advisor of the Devas, Jupiter represents all the whole class
of consultants, advisors, Judges, lawyers and Jyotishas. They all can
give us advice and take us to the right path.
Jupiter the Divine one
Jupiter represents the God in our life and verily called the Bhagavan
himself being the realised one and the knower of the supreme
Brahman. The concept of God, one has in his/ her mind can be seen
from the planets conjoining Jupiter. If Jupiter is placed alone then
the person shall believe in nirankar Brahman, the formless one or god
in the form Guru.
If Jupiter is placed with Saturn, this causes Brahma yoga, and the
natives possessing them shall take God as the supreme creator. He
can understand the secrets behind creation and the creative forces as
Saturn represents Brahma or the creator of the universe. If Jupiter is
placed with Sun, the for him God is the most powerful force of the
world and the supreme protector, like Shiva. With Moon, Jupiter
shall give the feeling that God is the most compassionate one like the
Mother. However, if Jupiter is placed with Rahu, it causes the Guru-
Chandala yoga and the person doesn’t believe in God and doesn’t
obey his elders/ preceptor.
UNDERSTANDING VENUS
***Venus the Asura Guru***
Being a Brahman and a Guru, he is very knowledgeable. However the
knowledge differs that of Jupiter. On one hand Jupiter represents the
Para vidya, the knowledge for enlightenment, Venus represents, the
Apara vidya, the practical knowledge required for living in this world.
This can be compared with different level of strategies in an
organisation. Here, Jupiter would represent the knowledge required
to take higher level strategies and long term visions, and Venus shall
represent the operations level knowledge and fulfilling short terms
goals and targets.
Hence where Jupiter promotes spiritualism, Venus promotes
materialism and all those things which attract us to this world. No
reason why Venus represents all the materials of beauty, pleasure and
luxury. Venus also represents the attraction between opposite sexes
and makes us fall into relationships, which is again another bondage
to this material world. Thus marriage and all sexual relationships are
represented by Venus.
It is a noteworthy fact that, the name given to Venus is Sukra in
Sanskrit, the same term is also used for Semen, the carrier of the Soul
from the father to fertilise the ovum in mother’s womb. It is a medical
fact that millions of sperms compete with each other to fertilise the
ovum, which shows the selfish desire to outwit someone else and to
feel great. Thus the sense of selfishness and competition in us is
represented by Venus only.
UNDERSTANDING SATURN
***Saturn, the Proletariat***
Saturn is the most distant planet from the Sun and marks the
boundary of solar system for Jyotish. It is the slowest one, something
which makes us feel of old age or heavy work. Saturn represents the
serving or the working class. Thus it represents hard work or working
in difficult condition. Being a significator of Old age, it signifies
fatigue, pain and aging.
It has great enmity with Sun and Jupiter, the givers of Vitality and
now we understand why this is. `coz old age and fatigue can’t stay
simultaneously with youth and liveliness. Because of this enmity,
Saturn makes us forget things (opposite of karaka Jupiter). As a
antithesis of Jupiter, it signifies lack of reward for the work one
performs, sorrow and misery.
The physicists of the recent age are working on a problem called the
unified theory or the theory for everything. Decades ago the great
physicist, Isaac Newton of classical physics genre said that everything
in the universe attracts each other by the force called the force of
gravity and propounded the theories on the Universal Laws of
gravitation. He asserted that all the movements on earth and in the
universe such as a planetary system like our own solar system can be
explained with the laws of gravity. However, years later great
Physicist Albert Einstein postulated another theory, the theory of
quantum mechanics, challenging Newtonian theory of gravitation.
However, to the utter disappointment to the world of physics, none of
the theories could fully explain any events which are outside their
realm. This made the world of physics to search for a theory which
would explain everything.
Had the idea of theory for everything been speculated decades before,
the bearer of the idea would have been branded as crazy or insane.
However, with the current frame of knowledge and understanding,
the scientists admit the possibilities of the theory for everything. Not
only this, they are also researching on the possibilities of time travel
in past and future, which was once upon a time considered to be
either crazy or mystical, without any scientific basis.
You must be thinking that where did I take you to? Why am I talking
of physics while discussing Jyotish? However this overview was
necessary to emphasis that everything in this universe is connected
and nothing happens accidentally or by chance. Whatever appears to
be a chance can become a regularly occurring event, when the time
frame in which we are witnessing an event is increased.
Have you ever thought that whenever we think of Sun, the feeling and
the thoughts which immediately occupy our mind is that of
something which is glorious, resplendent, a leader who is followed by
the whole planetary system in the solar system. We can compare him
with the king, whose everyone is a subject, whose responsibility is to
feed all of them, keep them hale and hearty. We do think of someone
who is righteous and praiseworthy and someone who would never
run away from his duties and responsibilities of feeding the whole
world and keeping them alive.
Here we also find a great similarity between Sun and the Father in a
household. Like Sun being the guardian of the whole solar system, in
a family father is the guardian, who is responsible for the welfare of
the family members and sees that everyone is following the path of
righteousness. This is no wonder that we associate Sun with father
and attribute the same traits of the Sun to the father. Thus in
symbological terms, father should be represented by Sun, the
protector and the righteous one.
Now we see some more associations of Sun and Moon with some of
the human aspects. Moon reflects the light of Sun and creates an
illusion which makes us think that Moon is luminous with its own
light. This is why we verily associate Sun who is resplendent with its
own light with Satya or the true one and Moon who is effulgent with
the light of Sun as Maya or illusion. Similar kind of associations we
tend to form when we express the nature of the Atma and Mana, the
Soul and the Mind. Atma is changeless, non-destructible soul which
changes body from one birth to another before merging into the
Parameshwara from whom it was created in the first place. When the
Atma or the soul gets separated from the resplendent infinite source
of energy of the Parama-Purusha, it gets attached to a Mana or the
Mind, which causes the feeling of Aham-Kara (the feeling of “I” ness)
to appear. The mind keeps on thinking that the soul is separate from
others and hence have the seeking that “I am unique and I am
different” When the consciousness evolves and develops with each
birth, we realise our true worth as a part of the eternal and supreme
Brahman, the Mana loses out the feeling of the separateness or “I”
ness and eventually gets separated out from the Atma and merges
with the source of its creation. Thus similar to the nature of Moon,
which causes illusion that it is luminous like Sun, the Mind also
causes the illusion that we are different and unique, whereas we are
only a reflection of the light of the paramatma. This similarities in the
Traits of Mind and Moon, makes us associate them with each other
and also make us associate Sun with the Soul, both of them have the
same nature of changelessness, formlessness and free from aging and
death.
Prasna Marga says that at the time of the prasna the following things
must be noticed:
1. Exact time
2. The nature of the spot occupied by the questioner
3. The nature of astrologer's own breath
4. The astrologer's own condition or state
5. What the questioner touches
6. The Arudha Rasi
7. The direction in which the querist is standing or placed
8. The Letters of the words uttered by the querist
9. Movement of the querist
10. Mental disposition of the querist
11. Querist attention to any things or substance nearby, i.e., where he
is looking?
12. Dress of the querist
13. Other omens at that time such as sound or such things
4. Touch
Touching following body parts at the time of query is not auspicious
for the objective of the query: Navel, Nose, Mouth, Hair on the head
or any parts of the body, nails, teeth (hair, nails and teeth are ruled by
Saturn), private parts, anus, neck, stomach, ring finger, the nine
opening of the body, the palm of his hand, sole of the feet, joints in
the body (gandanta or junction points) or any depression
(debilitation).
2. EVEN Signs:
Jeeva: 1/4/7 navamsas
Mula: 2/5/8 navamsas
Dhatu: 3/6/9 navamsas
To be continued...
Illustration:
---------------------------
One Sunday, one of my students and I went to our Sunday class at
one of the reservoirs in Singapore. We were discussing various things.
He was facing some problems in his job front. He never put any query
to me until that day. After a while of discussion, he asked me when
his troubles at job shall be relieved.
To answer him, I immediately cast the horoscope of the moment in
my mind and found the following things:
1. Lagna rising is cancer with Jupiter in it
2. Sun exalted in the 1oth house.
3. 11th lord Venus is exalted in the 9th.
4. 1oth lord exalted in the 7th
and many such things...
All the indications suppoted that the objective of the querry shall be
realised. I gave a positive indications and said that within 14 days
(Venus- 11th lord), he shall get a good break. He was unsure as
because of the SARS conditions, things looked bleak. However, I
sticked on, because of the nimittas were all supporting. It was a clear
Sun day and it was little hot. However, just before he asked his
questions, cool breeze started blowing, giving the indication that
Jupiter's influence is very strong as we felt very soothing. We are
sitting in front of a reservoir ruled by the sign cancer, which was very
steady and calm and adding to it, the breeze showed it all. My mind
was calm and introspective at that point as I was thinking on some
jyotish principles.
This is one instance out of many, where the nimittas showed that it
works. Do your mantras properly and be watchful to your
surroundings and it shall work for you too.

Marak Grahas I
INTRODUCTION
In Chapter 44 or BPHS, Parashara describes the maraka grahas who
can bring misfortunes and death during their planetary periods
(dasas). In verses 2nd to 5th he explains the houses of longevity and
death whereby he says, "O Brahmin! Third and Eighth Bhava are the
two Bhavas of longevity. The Bhavas, related to death, are the 12th
from each of these, i.e. Dhana and Yuvati Bhava are Maraka Bhavas".
PRIMARY MARAKAS
Out of the two maraka bhavas, Dhana Bhava is a powerful Maraka
Bhava. Along with it the following are also considered to be Marakas
1. The Lords of Dhana and Yuvati Bhava
2. Malefics in Dhana and Yuvati Bhava
3. Malefics conjoined with Dhana and Yuvati bhava’s Lords (BPHS
44.3)
The major and sub-periods of these Grahas will bring death on the
native, depending on whether he is a long life, medium life, or short
life person.
SECONDARY MARAKAS
If the none of the dasas of the planets mentioned above is operational
during the expected time of death as per the ayurdaya calculations
(calculation of age), then the death needs to be seen from the
Secondary Marakas. However, while checking the Secondary
Marakas, which are given in the order of decreasing maraka power.
PREDOMINANT KILLER:
If Saturn is ill-disposed and be related to a Maraka Graha (as
mentioned above), he will be the first to kill in preference to other
Grahas. (BPHS 44.9)
OTHER FACTORS:
1. There are three kinds of life-spans, viz. short, medium and long.
Short life is before 32 years, later on up to 64 it is medium life and
from 64 to 100 it is long life. Beyond 100 the longevity is called
Purnayu (10-14). Persons falling into these three compartments shall
die in specific constellations based on the Navatara shceme of
classification of the Nakshatras into three groups. According to Pt.
Sanjay Rath, if the Janma Nakshatra is stronger to initiate the
vimshottari dasa, then the Navatara chakra is initiated from the
Lagna Nakshatra and vice-versa.
i. One born with short life combinations may face death in the Dasha,
denoted by Vipat star.
ii. One of medium life may die in the Dasha, denoted by Pratyak star.
iii. one with long life may die in the Dasha, denoted by Vadha star.
The lord of these fateful stars or the planets placed there can bring
death or misfortune.
NAVATARA CHAKRA
The Navatara Chakra starts from Lagna Nakshatra if the Vimshottari
Dasa is started from Moon and vice versa.
1. Janma Tara- Birth
2. Sampat Tara- Wealth
3. Vipat Tara- Danger
4. Kshema Tara- Well Being
5. Pratyak Tara- Obstacles
6. Saadhana Tara- Achivement
7. Naidhana Tara- Death
8. Mitra Tara- Friend
9. Parama Mitra Tara- Good Friend
2. The Dasha of the Lord of the 22nd Decanate also cause death. The
22nd decante always falls in the 8th house of the decanate chart. The
lord of 64th Navamsa from Moon can also bring death/ misery. The
64th Navamsa falls in the 4th house in the Navamsa chart. Thus,
check the 4th lord from Moon in the Navamsa Chart. The 23rd
Nakshatra from the Janma Nakshatra is called Vainasika Nakshatra.
The lord of this constellation or the planets placed in it can cause
death or bring misfortune.
3. Death may come to pass in the Dasha of Sixth lord and in the sub-
periods of Sixth, Eighth or Twelfth Lords.
RAHU AND KETU AS MARAKAS
1. If Rahu, or Ketu are placed in Lagna, Seventh, Eighth, or Twelfth
Bhava, or happen to be in the 7th from a Marakesh, or are placed with
such a Graha, they acquire powers of killing in their major, or sub-
periods.
RIDER
Longevity Calculation prohibited by Parasara before the native attains
20 years of Age. He says to Maitreya, O excellent of the Brahmin! It is
impossible to decide upon longevity till the native is 20 years old. Till
such year the child should be protected by sacred recitations,
religious offerings (of Ghee/ clarified butter etc.) to consecrated fire,
as prescribed in the Vedas and scriptures and through medical
treatments; premature death may descend on the child due to sins of
father and mother, or of his/her own (in the previous birth). We shall
discuss this topic in Conditions of Balarista in another article on the
topic.

Brahma & Maheswara in Ayur Jyotisha
INTRODUCTION
Brahma and Maheswara are two key concepts in Ayur Jyotisha. We
know that in Hindu Pantheon, the Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and
Maheswara Create, Protect/ sustain and Annihilate respectively. Thus
the concept of Brahma as creater and Maheswara as the liberator are
used in some key Ayur Dasas such as Brahma, Sthira, Shoola dasa etc.
Though their importance is high, many do not venture into finding
them as they turn out to be little complecated. I tried to make this
little easire to understand and compute. With hardwork and patience,
this can be learnt and applied in Ayur Jyotisha.
BRAHMA
Yagyam is the worship or praise for Prajapati the progenitor. This is
the fourth principle of Jyotish and is called Lagna or the ascendant
representing the seat of Prajapati the progenitor and the ‘praise
worthy one’. He is the (physical) creator of all beings and is a form of
Brahma. He is praised with the Gayatri mantra for His excellent
service to all creation. (Pt. Sanjay Rath)
One among these six planets (Sun to Venus) will represent Brahma
the creator, in the horoscope. Saturn being the Ayus Karaka and
having Brahma as his deity[i] cannot represent Brahma. The nodes do
not have a physical body and cannot contribute one, besides they are
actually demoniacal and have become immortal due to their ‘drinking
of the amrita’ clandestinely at the time of the churning of the
primordial ocean. (Pt. Sanjay Rath)
Saturn is the deity of Brahma and is the karaka for the Dusthana.
Thus the calculation of the Brahma involves finding out the stronger
among the three dusthana lords namely, 6th, 8th, 12th lord based on
thier placement in odd and visible signs. The predominance of Odd
and Visible signs indicate towards the masculine energy and the
power to create. If however, the condition of Odd and visible signs are
not fulfiled, the Visibility condition is dropped and if even the odd-
sign condition fails, the condition gets modified to odd-house
placement.
1. Determine the stronger between the lagna and seventh house as per
sources of strength and call this dominant satya peetha.
2. Identify the lords of the 6th, 8th & 12th houses from the dominant
satya peetha. Remember to consider the co-lordship of Aquarius
(Rahu) and Scorpio (Ketu) if these signs are involved.
5. If none satisfy the odd & visible sign placement, drop the "visible
sign" condition. Now check again from the Dominant Satya Peetha, if
the lords of 6th/8th/12th placed in odd signs. If this fails, move to the
weaker Satya Peetha and check the placement of 6th/8th/12th lord in
Odd sign.
6. If all the lords (6th/8th/12th), from both satya peetha are placed in
Even signs, then the placement of 6th/8th/12th lord in Odd "Houses"
need to be checked from the Dominant Satya Peetha and if this
condition is not met, the same is checked from weaker satya peetha.
7. If two or more planets contend for the position of Brahma, then the
strongest should be declared as Brahma.
8. Should any of the three planets Saturn, Rahu or Ketu qualifies for
the position of Brahma , then the sixth planet from it, in the order of
the reckoning of the weekdays, becomes Brahma.
MAHESWARA
There are Ekadas (11) rudras in a horoscope, each being the lord of
8th from each of the signs excluding the one which is conjoined with
Jupiter. Among them, the lord of the 8th house from the sign
occupied by Atmakaraka has the higest status among the Rudras and
is called Mahesvara.
The Bhagwat Gita also indicates this difference when Sri Krishna
says, ”amongst the rudras I am çaìkara (or mahesvara)”. The
philosophical difference is that each of the other ten rudras simply
destroys the body whereas Mahesvara liberates the soul (atma) by
delivering it from the cycle of rebirth to the highest spiritual plane.
(Pt. Sanjay Rath)
RIDERS:
1. If the 8th lord from Atmakaraka is exalted or in own sign, the lord
of the 8th/12th from it, whichever is stronger, becomes Mahesvara.
This is based on the principle that the 8th lord in exaltation or in own
sign loses its sting to kill and delegates the power to another i.e. the
lord of the 8th/12th from the sign where it is placed.
2. If Rahu or Ketu becomes Mahesvara then the sixth planet counted
in the weekday order becomes the Mahesvara.
Rahu is replaced by Mercury
Ketu is replaced by Jupiter
Note: The aspects mentioned here are the rasi drsti (sign sight). All
movable sign is aspected by the fixed signs, excluding the adjascent to
it. All fixed signs are aspected by movable signs excluding the
asjascent one and all dual signs are aspected by other three dual
signs.
USE OF YOGADA:
The concept of Yogada can be used in all divisional charts along with
the Rasi chart. In the divisional chart, however, the yoga shall be
limited to the particular area of life as signified by the divisional
chart. This becomes very useful in timing riches and power through
either udu dasas such as Vimhottari or Rasi Dasa such as Narayana or
Sudasa.

Snapshot Method of Interpreting a Horoscope I
INTRODUCTION
One of the biggest hurdle to any beginner in Jyotish that when a
horosope is present infront, one tend to get lost in the multitude of
factors involved in analysing a horosope. This cause frustration and
devomotive one to study more and go deeper into the discipline. This
article tries to address the issue and provides a guideline on how to go
about analysing a horosope. This article is by no means
comprehensive as there is no substitute to hardwork and studying the
Jyotisha-shastras in original. However, I believe that this can give a
good kick-start to any beginner in Jyotish.
1. The Nature of the person can be known by the planets placed in the
Lagna and its Trine and those who are aspecting it. These planets
shall confer their naisargika (natural)nature to the native. Purest
quality of planets are exhibited when they are exalted and when
placed alone/ isolated, whenever they are conjoined with other
planets they undergo modification. Different planets signify different
aspects of personality.
4. If the malefic planets placed in the Kendras are placed in the Own
house or exalation, this constitute the Mahapurusha yogas and the
person shall have saintly nature based on the tattva of the planet
consituting the mahapurusha yogas.
7. Best place for benefics are kendras and trines. Benefics placed in
the 6th, 8th and 12th house, do good to the significations of those
houses but with the cost of destroying their natural and functional
significations.
STRENGTHS
1. Any house which is placed with benefics in kendra and trikona will
prosper. The house suffers if it is placed with malefics in kendra or
trikona, provided they are not the lord or karaka of the house
concerned.
4. Protectors of a house are the Karaka and the lord. They shall
always try to protect the house and its significations. If they are
strong, the protection is strong, however, it they are afflicted (placed
with enemies/ malefics) or weak (placed in debilitation/ marana
sthana), they might fail to protect the house/ natural significations.
WEAKNESS
1. Any planet aspected by a malefic, who is not a friend is said to be
afflicted. [Sun and Mars do not afflict Jupiter]. Please note the
natural friendship and enemity among the planets to understand this.
2. Nodes (Rahu and Ketu) afflict every other planet. Nodes cause
corruption of natural significations, being a shadowy planet.
4. Planets defeated in planetary war (two planets placed very near are
said to be in war, a planet that loses longitude has lost the war) fails
to protect, its signification and also the significations of house owned
by it suffers.
7. Debiliated planets weaken the house they are placed in and also the
planets they are placed with. This is because, debilitated planet is like
a resourceless guy, trying to gain from its environment.
10. If there is conflict between planet placed in fifth and lagna the
native suffers due to restlessness.
12. If a house lord is placed in a Dusthana from the house itself then
the external significations of the house suffers, such as the relatives
ruled by the house etc. However, if it placed in a dusthana from the
lagna, then the native suffers wrt to the house under consideration
and the internal significations, such as dhana (2nd), parakrama (3rd),
happiness (4th), power/ authority (5th) etc., shall suffer. Thus for
example, if the 4th lord is in eighth and the karaka Moon is weak,
then the person would be concerned about something related to his
mother, however the mother might not suffer as the lord is placed in
the 5th from 8th.
14. The controller of sukha trikona is the 4th house [kendra houses
control the trikona]. If 4th house is afflicted the person faces misery.
If 4th house is badly afflicted, person can have suicidal tendencies.
This is aggravated if the 5th house from Moon is also afflicted (with
malefics).
Now we wouldn’t have bothered much if the name would only defined
our unique images in the mind of the person, interacting with us,
however, it is not limited to that. The results we accrue in the society
is the results of all those numerous interactions which we have within
it. Thus it is very important to know our own name is in store for us.
This knowledge shall also empower us to change our name if
necessary, to make the vibrations of the name positive in our life. We
can keep the name of a new born not on an arbitrary basis but on well
grounded principle of Jyotish, so that their life can be fruitful and
prosperous.
Even if you don’t believe in this, which seems superstitious, why not
give a honest try and see whether or not it works. There is nothing
you lose.
MEANING OF AKSHARAS
Whenever a particular sound is uttered, it has a very peculiar and
specific influence on us at various levels, physical, mental and
spiritual. Thus this is very important to understand, what each of the
sound signified by the various aksharas of Sanskrit signify. This shall
help us know, what kind of influences we like to draw to the native
when his name is called by others. Thus when a particular akshara is
picked for the native’s name, it should be based on a well understood
principle and not on a random manner.
The following table shows the meaning of each of the aksharas of the
divine language, Sanskrit and help us in deciding what aksharas we
need to chose for a name to heighten some particular influences of
planet and the aksharas themselves.
The Maharishis of the yore have found through their intuition, the
aksharas, which symbolises the different influences of the universe,
control the power centres of the body, called the charkas. These
charkas are placed along the length of the Spinal column and control
various parts of the body and various aspects of our personality
through the nerves spreading through out the body carrying the
messages of the Brain or our thoughts. When an akshara is
pronounced repeatedly, it heightens the influences of these charkas,
which bring with them, myriads of effect, most of which act at a very
subtle level and can hardly be objectively felt. More can be found in
the literature on the Kundalini Yoga.
Figure 4: Katapayaadi Varga- Consonents
IV. Divide this reversed number by 12. The reminder shall show the
rasi ruled by the name. If the reminder obtained is “0”, then 12
becomes the reminder. The remainder when counted from Aries gives
the sign on which the name has predominant influence.
The Rasi so obtained becomes the nama Arudha of the person and
shows how is he perceived by those who calls him by a particular
name. This can be judged when we see how the different planets are
placed from the nama arudha and find out the influences of the
conjunctions, aspects etc.
The Moon is the sustainer of the Arudha and when Moon is placed in
the trines or 12th from the Nama Arudha, the native gains from the
name. However, Moon should never be placed in the 8th from the
Arudha. Such placement of Moon is called Chandrastama and is very
damaging to the Arudha, which shows that the native shall get into
troubles, trial and tribulations, if such things happen in his
horoscope.
ILLUSTRATION
Let’s find the Rasi obtained by the name Sanjaya
I. Write the word of the stanza in Devanagari script and remove the
“matras” and incomplete/half letters.
The name Sanjaya is made up of three phonemes namely Sa, nja, and
ya. However, the 2nd phonemes is a compound akshara
(yutkakshara) and hence the half akshara has to be ignored here. Now
in a compound akshara or phoneme, the last akshara is the complete
one and all others are incomplete and hence we always need to
consider the last one in case of these compound aksharas, which
happens to be “ja” in this case.
The numerical value of each of these aksharas are sa- 7, ja- 8 and ya-
1. Thus 781 is the no. signified by the name Sanjaya.
IV. Divide this reversed number by 12. The reminder shall show the
rasi ruled by the name. If the reminder obtained is “0”, then 12
becomes the reminder. The remainder when counted from Aries gives
the sign on which the name has predominant influence.
PRINCIPLES OF NAMINIG
The following principles are to be followed while naming a baby or
checking the effect of the name on someone.
Principle I:
The name of the child should be based on the most auspicious planet
in the chart. If The planet which is the most auspicious and bringer of
yoga is chosen, the beneficence of this planet shall always one the
native, whenever his/ her name is called. The aksharas of this planet
shall be the starting akshara of the native.
Principle II:
Among the aksharas of the most auspicious planet, chose the akshara
which is placed in the Kendra/ Trikona from Moon. In case of doubt,
chose the akshara of the Moon’s position.
Principle III:
If the Sign, selected by the above process is Chara Rasi (Movable
Sign), then two phonemes should be selected. If the Sign is
Dwisvabhava (Dual), then select three phonemes name. However, if
the sign arrived at is Sthira (fixed), then four phonemes should be
selected.
Principle IV:
The Name chosen should have a benefic influence on the native. Thus
if the name is related to the name of Ista, then each time the native is
called by the name, this would remind him/ her of their Ista Devata
and hence would be highly beneficial.
Principle V:
Use Katapayadi Varga system to know the exact influence of the name
on the native. This will show how the people around perceive the
native.
Principle VI:
Use Achyutayadi Varga system to know the focus of the native in life,
when he is surrounded by people, who calls the native with a
particular name. (More on this later)
ILLUSTRATION
The name of lord Rama starts with the Akshara “ra”. This is lorded by
Moon. In the Horoscope, Moon is very well placed in the Lagna with
exalted Jupiter shows that the name shall bring the blessings of the
strong Gaja-Keshari yoga in Rama’s life and give him tremendous
fame and people would remember him forever.
ra akshara falls in the Taurus Rasi, which is placed in the 11th house
from Moon. This is aspected by a strongly placed Moon and Taurus
happens to be the exaltation rasi of moon. This shows that the name
was protected and Sustained by Moon.
However, what he got from the world can be seen when we count the
reminder from his Lagna. This comes at Libra with exalted and
retrograde Saturn. A malefic in the fourth house is very detrimental to
the happiness at home and everyone is aware of the troubles and
pain, Lord Rama had to pass through to establish dharma in this
world.
The name Rama falls in a Movable sign because of the two aksharas
or phonemes. In the trine to the Lagna, it falls in the Lagna itself,
showing that the focus of the native shall be perfection in Ideals
shown by the Lagna. This is no wonder that Rama is popularly known
as Purushottama, the best among purusha or human.
The Akshara falls in the Taurus sign, which is in Kendra to Moon, but
not the best Kendra as it is placed with a strong malefic. This shows
that he faced lots of pain in the life like Lord Sri Rama.
Whatever he received from the name can be seen from the counting
the reminder from Lagna, which comes to Leo. Leo is aspected by
Saturn and Mars, in the 3rd from AL, showing his tremendous
amount of suffering in the life.
CASE III: Hitler
The initial akshara of the name, i.e., ha is represented by the planet
Moon. Moon is under the terrible shakti yoga, destroying the benign
Jupiter, which shows his mass pogrom of the Jews. Among other
things, the planet of Humanity is not only destroyed by the shakti
yoga, but also there is a terrible Guru-Chandala yoga along with the
axis. This shows why he made his mission of life to eradicate one
complete race.
The Akshara falls in the Karkata (Cancer) rasi. Now Cancer is 8th
from the Moon and hence shows that it is not sustained by the natural
sustainer Moon. This shows why Hitler faced such difficult times
from his childhood. Not only that, his end was quite tragic and
terrible, where he had to see all his dreams getting shattered one by
one.
(i) Vara- Agni Tattva- shows the life/ longevity of the undertaking.
Check how the vara lord placed, this shall indicate the longevity of the
event for which the Muhurtha being determined. The Vara should be
determined by the horosocope of the main person involved. The day
lord should preferably be as per the lord of the house which signifies
the muhurtha.
(v) Yoga- Akasha Tattva- Shows how different elements in the event
shall be bonded to each other. This shows the nature of relationships
between different members involved in the event. Check how well the
Yoga Lord placed and also the nature of the Yoga.
II. The Moon should be strongly and well placed in the Muhurtha
Chart.
III. The Karaya Bhava (Singnifying house) should be empty. For
studies, 4th is the karaka bhava and it should be empty.
IV. The Karaka should be well placed, either in the Lagna or in the
Kendra to the Lagna. But, it should not be placed in Karya Bhava.
However, it does not apply for 6H / 11H matters i.e in evil matters
( war etc. ) planets in Karya Bhava are good. In addition, Karaka
should not be in Marana Karaka Avastha. The houses where the
planets becomes marana avastha are:
Sun- 12th
Moon- 8th
Mars- 7th
Mercury- 7th
Jupiter- 3rd
Venus- 6th
Saturn- Lagna
Rahu- 9th
Ketu- Nowhere, as it doesn't have body and hence cannot physically
suffer.
VI. Check the Hora and the Kala. The Hora shows the focus of the
activity at any time, take both the natural significations and temporal
significations of the Hora lord at any time to find the different events
likely to happen in that muhurtha. Hora of the 8th house lord and
badhakesh from the signification house (of the principle person
involved in muhurtha) is prohibited.
One should not start any activity pertaining to a direction lord in the
Kala of the corresponding Kala lord. Thus in Rahu Kala, Jupiter's
activity is prohibited and in Mars's kala, Venusian activity is
prohibited and so on.
The method to find the kala is: The Kala of the Vara lord starts at
6:00 am LMT and thereafter, each 1.5 hours, the kala of the planet
rises in the following order: Sun-> Mars-> Jupiter-> Mercury->
Venus-> Saturn-> Moon-> Rahu. From 6:00 "pm" LMT, the kala of
the planet, in the fifth from the vara lord starts the sequence repeats
in the order given.
VII. Check the Navamsa. Along with the Lagna, the Navamsa Lagna
should be well placed in the Muhurtha Chart. The Yoga-karakas in the
Rasi Charts should be well placed in the Navamsa Chart.
VIII. Above all, do not ignore the Atmakaraka. The influences on the
Atmakaraka shall help deciphering many things that happen in a
Muhurtha. Check how the Dharma Devata placed. His blessings shall
show how smooth the acitivity undertaken in a muhurtha would be.
IX. Be careful of all the major bad yogas such as Kalasarpa, Sarpa,
Pishacha etc.
X. Last but not the least, the Arudha shall be well placed. Moon
should not be placed in the 8th from the Arudha Lagna.
The strength of Jupiter lies with guiding the Mana (Moon) in the right
direction. This is why in the Kalachakra, or the time cycle, Jupiter is
placed opposite to the Moon. No, wonder, on Amavasyas and
Purnimas, when the mind gets hyper exited; only Jupiter has the
power to put rein on such Mind. Thus on full Moon nights, when the
Moon (Mind) is highly activated, Satya-Narayan (Jupiter) vrata is
done.
Mercury is the planet of skills and signifies the ability to use Language
in communication. Strong Mercury shows good communication skills.
On one hand, where Jupiter signifies knowledge and wisdom,
Mercury signify formal education, i.e., application of intelligence in
solving practical problems. This also signifies the learning ability as
Mercury represents a child who can be trained in various things. All
depends on who is training the child; the child will learn the things
indicated by the teacher. If Jupiter is teaching him, no doubt the
native becomes knowledgeable and if Moon is the teacher, he
becomes passionate, concurring with the trait of Moon. Who is
teaching Merc, is learnt from which planet is placed in the trine to it.
Rahu eclipses Sun and is a bitter enemy of Jupiter. Rahu has a natural
tendency to eclipse Sun and hide the effulgence of Sun is extreme
darkness. This is no wonder that in Rahu-Kala, not only gathering
knowledge is next to impossible; but also one is tend to make wrong
decisions (shown by the enmity towards “dhi” karaka Jupiter).
The Sun is the source of knowledge and hence can confer the highest
knowledge, the knowledge of Gita and Vedanta. Maharshi Jaimini
says Sun also indicate social.
Sun being the Raja yoga karaka, it confers the knowledge of political
science and related subjects. Sun gives vitality to otherwise inert
world and hence it can confer knowledge of things, which is linked to
vitality such as Medicine etc.
Sun is the leader among all the planets and hence all of them rotate
around the Sun. Thus sun governs Diplomacy, Arbitration, and
Leadership etc.
Among metals Sun rules gold and hence it gives the knowledge of
Gold jewellery and Bullion.
Sun has the fire of tapas and hence can indicate Meditation or related
discipline of mind control. As the Sun rules rhythm it confers the
knowledge of Musician and Instrumentalist. It also gives the
knowledge regarding wool, Grass.
Quotes from Jaimini Sutras:
1. The Sun in swamsa makes the native a keen government/political
worker and good at social service.
2. The Sun in the 1st/5th gives knowledge of the Vedas and the
Bhagvat Gita.
(a) There are six systems of Indian philosophy including Vaisheshika,
Nyaya, Sankhya, Yoga, Purva Mimamsa and Vedanta. The Vedas refer
to the four primary texts of Hinduism namely the Rig, Yajur, Sama
and Atharva Veda while the Vedanta includes the various Upanishads
culminating in the Bhagvat Gita of Sri Krishna.
(b) Parasara adds that Sun in the fifth gives knowledge of music &
vedanta.
THE MOON
Anything to do with food and Dairy products.
Moon is the karaka for mind and hence indicates disciplines such as
Psychology, psychoanalysis or any studies related to Mind. Being the
giver of food and the prime sustainer in this world it shows
disciplines which is related to food products such as hotel
management, catering, bakery, confectionery or dairy products and
also clothes. It is a watery planet and hence shows knowledge related
to water such as ship, sailing, laundry, liquor, and pearl or other sea
products. As the key sustainer it shows studies related to agriculture
or horticulture.
Moon is also the karaka for mother and hence is very caring. All such
disciplines such as Nursing and house keeping, baby sitting which
deals with caring for someone is ruled by Moon. Moon also signifies
bureaucracy and social service.
MARS
Engineering or such technical disciplines, logic
Mars also governs the land and metal, and hence gives the knowledge
of metallurgy, mineral, building construction etc.
Being a fiery planet, Mars can also give the knowledge of Jyotisha.
When it joins Jupiter is generates the fruitful Guru-Mangala yoga
which confers the native the highest knowledge of Jyotisha as both
planet show amalgamation of intuition and logical reasoning.
MERCURY
Mercury’s karakatwa is communication and speech and hence it
governs Communication through electronic such as telephone or
through other media such as news such as journalism and reporting,
posts, documentary filmmaking. As books is one of the medium of
communication he governs disciplines such as Library science, books
writing, authorship, knowledge of literature and linguistics,
publication, printing, stationery, documentation, teaching,
accountancy, clerical studies such as stenography.
JUPITER
This planet represents the divine disciplines such as Sanskrit, Vedas
and Shastras, Finance related subjects, high level strategy.
VENUS
Knowledge of Shastras, Knowledge of beauty products such as
garments, perfumes etc, various forms of Arts, Private sector and
management skills, eye for detail.
Venus is the Guru of the Asura and very knowledgeable and hence
can confer the knowledge of Shastras. It can make one a author and
as Jaimini says he is conferred the knowledge of poetry and makes
the native a eloquent speaker and knowledgeable critic. However
unlike Jupiter, the knowledge is mostly useful for living a good life in
this world.
Venus signifies all the materials of luxury and hence can confer the
knowledge of beauty products such as garments, perfumes etc. Venus
rules all the forms of art as this can be used for attracting others. Thus
various forms of Arts and studies on music, acting, theatre and
cinema, singing, dancing, poetry, drama, fashion designing,
beautician or working with beauty products Apparel and textiles, and
interior decoration are signified by Venus.
Venus rules the real world strategies and hence signify the knowledge
of private sector and rules the operation level management skills.
Venus also signifies an eye for detail.
SATURN
Tradition studies or studies belonging to traditions; Jupiter & Saturn
give Brahma Yoga (Yoga granting Knowledge from Tradition).
Saturn rules the excretory system in the human body whose prime
responsibility is to clean the system from any poison or garbage and
hence all such disciplines which is related to cleaning of a place or
thing such as, drainage system, plumbing, garbage collection and
disposal etc. is signified by Saturn.
Saturn is extremely cold. This is borne out of the fact that it rules two
signs of the zodiac, which corresponds to winter or extreme cold.
Thus it signify Ice manufacturing, Refrigeration and preservation.
RAHU
Big Machines, Big bombs such as atomic and nuclear bombs etc,
espionage, abstract mathematician.
ARIES LAGNA
Even though Mars is the Lord of Eighth, he will be helpful to
auspicious Planets:
For Aries, Mars is the Lagna lord and the eighth lord (randhresha). In
sloka 6, Maharishi says that if the Eighth lord owns any Trisadayas
(3/6/11) it becomes evil however if its own a Trikona it gives
auspicious results. Here the other lordship of the Eighth lord is a
Trikona and thus it gives auspicious results.
Saturn, Mercury and Venus are malefics.
Saturn: Saturn is the lord of the 10th and 11th house. Even though the
lordship of 10th house diminishes the maleficence of Saturn, however
Maharishi says in the sloka 14 that a malefic, owning a Kendra
becomes auspicious only when it simultaneously Lords over a Kona.
Mere ownership of a Kendra doesn’t make a malefic an auspicious
planet, although it reduces its maleficence to some extent. Thus the
evil lordship of a Trisadaya shall dominate over the Kendra lordship
and make Saturn an evil planet for this Lagna.
Mercury: Mercury owns two Trisadaya houses, the 3rd and 6th and
hence the strongest evil planet for this Lagna.
Venus: Venus is the 2nd and the Kendra lord. Now Venus is suffering
from the Kendradhipatya dosha and hence cannot be auspicious for
the Lagna unless it owns a Kona too or associates with a Kona lord.
Moreover its lordship of neutral 2nd house is not of much avail as it
will give the results of the ownership of other house, the 7th. However
as compared to other planet, it is least evil or inauspicious, even if it is
a maraka being the lord of two maraka houses.
Jupiter: Jupiter lords the 9th and the 12th sign. Being the 9th lord, it
is very auspicious. Now the 12th lord is by nature a neutral and for
them all depends on the lordship of other houses. Thus Jupiter is an
auspicious planet for the Lagna.
Sun: Sun lords the trine and such trinal lordship is auspicious,
making the Sun an auspicious planet for the native of Aries Lagna.
Being the 12th lord, it can be influenced by other planets, thus under
the influence of benefics, it will give auspicious results whereas under
the influence of a malefic the results are quite inauspicious.
TAURUS LAGNA
Jupiter, Venus and Moon are malefics.
Jupiter: Jupiter lords the 8th and the 11th house. The nature of the
8th lord is dependent on the nature of the lordship over the other
house by the planet. Now 11th lordship is no doubt evil as it’s a
Trisadaya. Thus Jupiter becomes an inauspicious planet for the
Taurus Lagna.
Venus: Venus is the Lagna lord and generally we wouldn’t think of the
Lagna becoming a malefic. However, Venus also lords the 6th a,
Trisadaya (evil house) and that will take predominance and give
inauspicious results, even if it own a Kendra/ Kona vide sloka 15,
implied.
Moon: Moon is the lord of another evil bhava (Trisadaya), namely 3rd
and shall give inauspicious results for this Lagna.
Saturn and Sun are auspicious. Saturn will cause Raja Yoga.
Sun: Sun is the lord of 4th bhava and loses its maleficence being a
Kendra lord and also doesn’t own an evil bhava and hence it shall be
auspicious for this Lagna.
Jupiter’s group (Jupiter, Moon and Venus) and Mars will inflict
death.
FUNCTIONAL NATURE
1. Natural Benefics lording the Kendras (Quadrant) do not bestow
Benefic/ auspicious (Shubha Yoga) Results and Natural Malefics
owning the Kendras do not bestow Malefic/ inauspicious (Ashubha
Yoga) results on the native. (BPHS 34.2.)
The Natural Benefics are Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Moon and the
natural malefics are Saturn, Rahu, Mars, Sun. In this verse Maharishi
Parashara says that the benefic planets looses their beneficence and
Malefic planets loses their maleficence if they lord Kendras. However,
one must not interpret this by making the Benefics, Malefics and the
Malefics, Benefics. What the verse mean is that the benefics lose some
part of their Beneficence, however, they still remain benefic but with
lesser capability to give auspiciousness/ material benefits (yoga).
Similarly, the malefics shall lose their maleficence, however they shall
still remain mild malefics and shall not confer auspiciousness (yoga).
In the verse 14, Maharishi Parashara that Malefics, only when
simultaneously own a Trikona (Trine), becomes Yogakaraka and
confer auspiciousness/ material benefits (shubha yoga)
4. The Planet, owning a predominant house, will stall the effects, due
to another, owning a less significant house and will give his own
results. Eighth lordship of the Sun and the Moon is not inauspicious
(BPHS 34.7)
YOGAKARAKAS
1. If there be an exchange between a Lord of a Kendra and that of a
Trikona, or, if a Lord of a Kendra is conjoined with a Lord of a
Trikona in a Kendra, or in a Trikona, or, if a Lord of a Trikona is in a
Kendra, or vice versa, or, if there happens to be a full Drishti between
a Lord of a Kendra and a Lord of a Trikona, they cause a Yoga. One
born in such a Yoga will become a king and be famous. (BPHS 34.11-
34.12)
Here the maharishi have clearly spelled out the conditions of the
rajayoga, however in the subsequent stanzas we shall see the
conditions which can break such yoga formed by association of a
kendra and trikona lord. More to this, we must remember that if a
kendra lord is placed in a dusthana, it shall cause duryoga
(inauspicious combination), however if it conjoins a Trikona lord
then it becomes capable of granting yoga (auspiciousness), however
related to the dusthana.
In verse 15, Maharishi says that if the lord of the kendra or trikona
simultaneously own the trishadayas (the evil houses 3/6/11), then the
mere association of the kendra or trikona lord shall not give yoga.
This is an important condition and one must keep in mind while
interpreting the yogakarakas in a horoscope.
In verse 13, Maharishi gives the condition for a planet becoming suo-
moto yogakaraka, whereby he says that if a planet owns both kendra
and trikona, then he becomes suo-moto yogakaraka and can give yoga
(auspicious results) without associating with other kendra/ trikona
lords. However, we must see the association of the trisadaya lords as
mentioned in the 15th verse, before pronouncing the results.
2. NODES AND YOGA KARAKAS: Both the nodes Rahu and Ketu
give their effects, based on their conjunction with a house Lord or
their. If they are in Kendra conjoining or aspected by kendra/ trikona
lords it will become Yog Karak. (BPHS 34.16-34.17)
Nodes are shadowy planet and give results based on their association
or placements. If they are conjoined with Yogakaras or are aspected
by them, they shall confer rajayoga. However, due to the conjunction,
the yogakaraka itself might suffer and give bad results in its periods.
We might also consider the lordship of Rahu ketu in finding out their
functional nature. For this purpose, we need to consider Rahu as the
lord of Aquarius and Ketu as the lord of Scorpio. However, this
requires experimentation as this is not specifically mentioned by the
Maharishi.
The 1st, 10th, 7th & 4th houses/ lords represent the four ayana (goals
of life) called Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha (Readers may refer
to the Bhagavat Gita for a detailed explanation of these goals). Yoga
has been loosely interpreted as Union/association and in astrology
this implies conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs. A
weaker yoga is caused by one planet aspecting the house of the other
and vice-versa or by an exchange of constellation called sukshma
yoga. The association of the lord of a quadrant with the lord of a trine
results in Rajayoga producing auspicious results. For example, if the
tenth lord associates with the ninth lord Dharma-karma-adhipati
yoga results. This is the highest karma yoga. Another form of this
yoga is theassociation of the lord of the tenth house with the lord of
the fifth house. Gyana yoga (that leads to moksha) is caused by the
association of the lord of the fourth house with the lord of a trine.
This yoga gives great learning and knowledge.
Subha yoga or good results are produced by the placement of the lord
of a quadrant in a trine. Duryoga or inauspicious results are produced
by the placement of the lord of a quadrant in a dusthäna (evil house).
However, the duryoga is modified if it associates with the lord of a
trine.
Rajabhanga yoga is caused by the association of the lord of a quadrant
with the lord of a dusthana in an evil house. If instead, they associate
in a quadrant, Viparita Räjayoga occurs.
CHAPTER 7
However, the question which arise here is, why the quality of the time
is measured by only five organs and not anything else! To understand
this we need to understand the underlying similarity among the
different creation of this in this universe, either animate or in-
animate. This underlying similarity makes us belive that the
macrocosm and microcosm are similar, i.e., whatever happens in the
whole universe can be witnessed in smaller things like our own self or
the smallest thing like an atom. This concept has been verily conveyed
by the sloka "Yat Pinde Tat Brahmande" from the shastras.
However, when analysed further we see that we can see four distinct
phases in the cycle of creation namely the creation represented by
Fire, consolidation or growth represented by Earth, degeneration
represented by Air and dissolution/ destructution represented by
Water, which rules over the deluge (pralaya). The whole drama of
creation and destruction happens under the well laid out rules and
guidelines of the supreme creator, who is represented by Ether. Thus
ether prevails through the process of creation and dissolution and
forms the stratum or the environment where the drama is played out.
3. Karana (Half of Sinodic day): Like Tithi the karana is derived from
the relative position of the Sun and the Moon. Whenever a tithi is
divided into 2 parts, we arrive at the Karana. The ruler of Karana is
Mercury and the Tattva is Prthvi. Prthvi tattva represents
ahcievements of the goals or purpose and so does Karana. Where the
success & achivements of the purpose is more important in the
Muhurtha chart, in the natal chart, Karana has impact on the
profession and the professional success. This forms the foundation of
profession, where the different 10th house indication and the
indications of Dasamsa are based.
5. Yoga (Union): The ruler of this organ is planet Jupiter and the
element Ether, the binding force of all the tattvas. This is the reason
why, the yoga is derived from summing up the longitudes of the
Lumineries, the Sun and the Moon, the creators in form of Father and
Mother. Being the binding force, this shows the diffent kinds of
relationships which would be binding the members involved in an
event started on a particular muhurtha.

Divisional Chart I: Trimsamsa
INTRODUCTION
Trimsamsa chart is used to delineate various kinds of evils one is
likely to face. The key signification of the divisional charts can be
known by finding out the root of the divisional chart, by expunging
the multiple of 12. Trimsamsa means 30th division and by expunging
the multiple of 12, we arrive at 6 (30-12*2 ), which is the house of
diseases, servants/ service, enemies and ltigation (troubles we face in
this world due to external circumstances). Different harmonics of
divisional charts are concerned with different level of consciousness
within which the effect it shown.
Physical- Primary (D-1 to D-12)
Conscious- Secondary/ First harmonic (D-13 to D-24)
Sub-Conscious- Tertiary/ Second harmonic (D-25 to D-36)
Super- Conscious- Quaternary/ Third harmonic (D-37 to D-48)
Supra- Conscious- Pentenary/ Fourth harmonic (D-49 to D-60)
Beyond Material Consciousness- Beyond fourth harmonic (>D-60)
Trimsamsa or D-30 falls under the boundaries of second harmonic or
domain of the sub-conscious and hence shows the effect of the
enemies which are embeded in our sub-conscious mind and troubles
our existance from within. Since it deals with sub-consiciousness and
the house of enemies, we must understand that our biggest enemies
are our 6 source of weaknesses, which repeatedly bring us to this
material existence like invisible shakles binding us strongly and
preventing us from soaring high, being free!
Thus it is important to realise these enemies within and overcome
them and then only we can be free. This makes this division very
crucial to be examined as we are all in the path of spiritual evolution
and breaking the shakles of material weaknesses can enable us to
cross the boundaries of human beings.
Though in male nativity it is very significant, in a female nativity, it
is more as they are bearer of the moral thread in this
material existence and hence this divisional chart is
extensively used for finding out her moral character.
Though there are various trimsamsas, the current topic of discussion
is "the Parashari Trimsasa" This chart is used to know about diseases
which is borne out of our inherent weaknesses or the shad-ripus. The
shadripus are broadly signified by Saturn, the Karaka of sixth house
for diseases. The six sources of weakness can be attributed to
affliction to one of the pancha tattvas (five primordial elements ) and
thus shall show the kind of diseases one would suffer with. Because
our exisitance is due to the intermingling of the five tattvas which
govern various part of our being and this divisional chart is based on
the principles of tattvas, it shows kind of character one has and
also the time of manifestation of such character.
The six shadripus are governed by 6 planets of the 9 planets. The
lumineries are left out as they are the sources of light and remover of
all weaknesses. Along with the Lumineries, Jupiter is also left out as it
represents the divinity in a horoscope and hence cannot be the source
of any weaknesses. Its the blessings of Jupiter, the ruler of Akasha
Tattva (Ethery Element), that we can be free from the weaknesses, as
it represents the wish of the divine consiousness. These three planets
also have one thing in common, they are of Sattva guna, which is the
purest form of divine matifestation and cannot be attributed to any
weaknesses. The planets governing the six weaknesses are given
below:
1. Mars- Anger ( Krodha )
2. Mercury- Jealousy (Matsarya)
3. Venus- Lust (Kama)
4. Saturn- Intoxication (Mada)
5. Rahu- Greed ( Lobha)
6. Ketu- Illusion ( Moha )
METHOD OF CALCULATION
Parashara in BPHS, chapter 6 gives the method of calculation of the
Trimsamsa in the following slokas:
triMshAMsheshAshcha vishhame kujarkIjyaGYabhArgavAH
paMchapaMchAshhTasaptAxabhAgAnAM vyatyayAt.h same 27
However, for Even Trimsamsa, the sequence is reversed, i.e., the 1st
Trimsamsa of an even sign would fall in Venusian sign and the last
one would fall in Martian sign. The sequence of rulership of
Trimsamsa is given below:
1. Venus- 25 to 30 deg- Taurua
2. Mercury- 18 to 25 deg- Virgo
3. Jupiter- 10 to 18 deg- Sagittarius
4. Saturn- 5 to 10 deg- Capricorn
5. Mars- 0 to 5 deg - Scorpio
INTERPRETATION
1. Troubles due to enemity among tattvas:
We must know that the Agni - Jala and Prthvi - Vayu are the set of
antagonistic tattvas and they have difficulty in co-existence.
Whenever there is any association of these pairs of antagonistic
tattvas, troubles manifest in different forms. For example:
1.1. If Rasi chart is in Agni Tatwa and Trimsamsa shows Jala Tatwa
(opposite of Agni Tatwa) or vice- versa , there is sure to be plenty of
problems.
5. While 6th house is the house of enemies, the 8th house is the house
of debt and hence the trimsamsa chart shows Shadripu that aperson
acquires in his life and the 8th house represent the congenital
weaknesses one is born with as debt of past life karma.
6. Prasna Marga says that diseases can be of two types, Nija, arising
out of inherent weaknesses (congenital weakness of some body part,
such as liver- diabetes, lungs- asthma, heart- blood pressure) and
Agantuk, which comes from external sources such as the pathogens
like, bacterias and viruses (also known as Pathogenic diseases).
7. Each of these has two sub- categories. Nija disease can affect either
the body (8H) or mind (8H & 5H). Agantuka can be of two types --
Drishta (known causes- 6H ) and Adrishta (unknown causes , Badhak
and Badhakesh). In trimasamsa we deal with the weakness of body,
mind and the soul (weakness inherited from past births)
8. If one is conscious of forces at work in Trimsamsa, one would not
have any weakness at all. This is the best remedy of any weaknesses.
So be aware of thy weaknesses.
9. Lagna of any chart shows the native himself. Lagna Trimsamsa
shows his weaknesses. It shows what has been defined as Avishnu (i.e
not Vishnu or against Vishnu ). In this it is opposite of what is shown
by a Drekkana chart, the chart of strengths (governed by the
Maharishis). The sources of weaknesses (and related troubles) can be
seen from the three houses which control the longevity, i.e., Lagna,
Eighth and Tenth. Whereby the strength of the lords of these three
houses give the clue to the longevity of the house under
consideration, affliction to these houses by natural malefics or
Kayesha (6th lord of Rasi Chart), shows troubles in the area governed
by them. The significance of each of these houses are given below:
Lagna: Planets in Lagna will show weaknesses acquired during
current birth directly related to bodily weaknesses. If any of Shadripu
coming from any planet is in Lagna, this is a weakness that has
developed in this birth due to inherent weakness of Trimsamsa Lagna
itself ( which means intelligence, learning etc.). In addition to planets
in Lagna, LL of this chart will indicate the Tatwa that has become
strong or weak . Lagna Lord of Trimsamsa chart shows the exact
nature of disease.
10th House: Planets (Malefics) afflicting the 10th house denoting
Shadripu shows mental weaknesses where weaknesses develop due to
various pressures which the mind fails to counter.
8th House: Planets afflicting eighth house shows weaknesses
inherited from past incarnation as this is the house of debt, which
binds us to the karma in past birth.
10. The house arrived at by counting the Trimsamsa Lagna from the
Janma is a very crucial house and shows the the area of life the
person shall be troubled due to the weaknesses.
TIMING THE WEAKNESSES
Naisargika Dasa ( natural period ) is a wonderful tool in finding out
negative experiences one is likely to go through in this life.
Mars: 2 to 5
Mercury: 5 to 12
Venus: 13 to 32
Jupiter: 33 to 50
Saturn: beyond 50
Any afflictions to these planets will show negative experiences in the
corresponding age group. In particular curses on these planets should
be checked in Trimsamsa.
REMEDIES
1. A remedy can be suggested based on Trimsamsa Lagna. Based on
the following planets lording the lagna, the remedies can be suggested
as per the list given below:
Saturn- Pranayama.
Jupiter- Meditation.
Mars- Light a lamp.
Venus- Puja or Daan.
Mercury- Mantra Japa.
ONE
TRUTH
Number one represents the creative force, as this is the starting point
of the numeral system. The number zero although precedes it, it
represents absence of anything or vacuum and thus not represent by
any planet.
The attributes of this number being the source of all creation, the
king, the independent one etc. can only be attributed to Sun, the
natural signification of Soul, the king, the father, the natural leader
PERCEPTION
When we see the qualities of natural leadership, we also get enthused
with energy feel like taking initiative in things near us. We do feel the
presence of a king as protective and feel that the dharma would be
protected by all means. We become righteous and dutiful under the
Solar Influence. Thus, the planet, which is based on the perception of
the true self, is also Sun.
TWO
TRUTH
Number two represents sustenance and represented by Moon, when
seen in the weekday order. Moon rules motherly compassion, love,
caring and protection.
PERCEPTION
When we come under the influence of motherly affection and
compassion, we feel protected. Thus the perception of number two is
the Moon itself.
THREE
TRUTH
Based on the weekday order this no. is ruled by Mars, who governs
the anger, aggression and violence
PERCEPTION
Whenever we are faced with such situation of violence etc., we seek
divine intervention and peace. The preceptor of the gods, Jupiter,
governs this and hence rules the perception related to this number.
FOUR
TRUTH
Mercury governs this number based on the weekday order. Mercury
represents a child, humor and childish activities.
PERCEPTION
A child’s behavior is that of carelessness, laughing on something
without basis, plotting pranks against someone etc. Whenever we are
faced with such situation, we sometimes develop the feeling of
suspicion or sometimes the feeling of disgust. Rahu rules these
feelings and hence it governs the perception of this number.
FIVE
TRUTH
Jupiter rules this number, representing a teacher, who is
knowledgeable and willing to bestow us with knowledge and wisdom.
PERCEPTION
Whenever we are placed under the guidance of a wise teacher, the
feeling which develops therein is that of a disciple and hence this no.
is governed by Mercury, the learner.
SIX
TRUTH
Venus is the true ruler of this number and represents comfort, luxury
and courtship.
PERCEPTION
Comfort and Luxury make us seek the same from our surroundings
and in the presence of a partner, we also seek courtship and
relationship. Thus the perception is also governed by Venus, the true
ruler of this number.
SEVEN
TRUTH
Saturn, the ruler of this number governs Sorrow and Pain, which
redeem us from the bad karma of past lives.
PERCEPTION
While we suffer pain and misery, we tend to understand and
acknowledge our past undoing and realize that this life is a bondage
and the only way we get bliss is get out of this chain of life and death.
We seek liberation from both trouble and the chain of life and death.
Thus Ketu, the significator for emancipation, governs this number’s
perception.
EIGHT
TRUTH
The natural ruler of this number is Rahu as per the weekday order.
Rahu signify, deception, cheating and troubles inflicted on others.
PERCEPTION
When we faced with such situations of deception and all wrong doing,
we do feel that such persons should be punished. Thus Saturn, the
Dharmaraja (the king of righteousness), governs the perception of
this number.
NINE
TRUTH
Ketu rules this number as the weekday order and signify
emancipation, liberation and sanyasa (monk) , who has broken out of
the bondage of cycle of rebirth.
PERCEPTION
Whenever we see a monk or such persons, the predominant feeling
which we have is that, "how determined these persons are, that they
broke the strong chains of material success". It also generates the
feeling of rage on our self, that we are not as determined like them, to
follow our own life’s calling are. Mars governs these feelings of
determination and rage and hence governs the perception relation to
this number.

Vedic Numerology I: The Concept
For understanding numerology, one needs to understand the true
meaning of satya (truth) and arudha (illusion). The whole world runs
on the basis of perception, common understanding (between
members of a group) and personal understanding (of a person in a
group). To explain this lets say, when you see red traffic light on a
street, you would not like to cross road, being a padestrian. For that
matter this would be the behaviour of almost everyone, because this
forms the part of common understanding and everyone trains his/
her mind to behave in those "expected" ways. However, the personal
understanding would depend on the learning/ experience of each
member of the community, for example, some would be daring
enough to cross red lights and someone else would be too careful.
However, this is a minor variation of the common understanding. The
third most important thing, which would influence the behavious
would be what is your perception of the situation. Perceptions are
nothing but, cues which helps interpreting an event based on set
personal assumptions. The perceptions are based on both common
and personal understanding and forms the immediate basis of our
behaviour.
Thus, whether or not a cow is a cow, if everyone believes it to be a
cow, their behaviour shall certainly be affected by their belief. Note
here that the belief might not reflect truth, but a common
understanding. This is possible with human community as we all live
in the world of illusion and only when we realise the truth, we can
expect us to be free from the chains of illusion.
PRINCIPLES
Principle 1: Study the effect of the composite numbers as yoga of two
or more planets.
Principle 2: The unit digit (the digit in the right-hand most side) lead
the whole number. The subsequent numbers takes the subsequent
leadership position in tenth, hundredth position and such order. This
is equivalent to strength of a planet in any combination.
Principle 3: the root controls the basic nature of the number. Adding
up the digits of a number until a single digit is obtained can identify
the root. Expunging multiples of nine from the number also gives the
root of the composite number. For example to arrive at the root of
987 we add the digits 9+8+7 and arrive at 24; adding the digits again
2+4, we arrive at 6, which become the root of the number. The root
shows the basic drive or outcome of the number.
The root of the number is 1, represented by Sun and the house arrived
at is 10. Hence this shows that persons influenced by this number will
attain fame and reputation. However, since zero, the leading number
also represents emptiness, they shall prone to feel emptiness in their
endeavors and many times, their work efforts ends up without
achieving anything substantial.
11: Both the digits are ruled by Sun, however the root is ruled by
Moon. This number is considered to be a very auspicious number, as
the fire and brilliance of two Sun’s digits are smoothened by Moon,
the ruler of the Root no. This number is often used for making
monetary donations for charity and religious causes (Sun) and which
make the native feel protected (Moon).

Creation (Pt. Sanjay Rath)
INTRODUCTION
Creation of the Universe has been a popular theme with philosophies
and so also with Vedic Astrology. Parasara[1] teaches that the entire
manifested[2] Universe is but one-eighth portion of the body of
Narayana[3]. The size of the unmanifested Narayana is infinite and
just like dividing infinity by any number the quotient is still infinity,
so also the size of the manifested potion of Narayana is infinite[4].
Essentially, the absolute Narayana is Nirguna[5] but as a part of His
pleasure[6], does attain the three Guna[7] due to Yoga (union) with
the three kinds of Shakti[8].
The whole body of Narayana is divided into four parts called (1)
Param-Brahmä, (2) Maha-Vishnu, (3) Sada-Shiva and (4) Vasudeva.
These parts cannot really be differentiated from the whole as the pure
nectar pervades them and the names used here are merely to aid
understanding. Thus, Narayana with Sri[9] Shakti is called Maha-
Vishnu and is of pure[10] Satwa Guna; Narayana with Bhu[11] Shakti
is Param-Brahmä and is of pure Rajas Guna; while Narayana with
Nila[12] Shakti is Sada-Shiva and is of pure Tamas Guna. These three
parts are full of nectar and are imperceptible. The fourth part of
Narayana is Vasudeva. This quarter is further divided into two parts –
one part that is perceptible (with three Shakti i.e. Sri-Shakti, Bhu-
Shakti & Nila-Shakti and three Guna’s intermingling) and the other
[
[
[
[
[
[
[
[
[
[
[
[
part that is imperceptible (with two Shakti’s: Sri-Shakti & Bhu-
Shakti).
The three-fold division continues into the next level due to the
expansion of this perceptible part of Vasudeva with the motive of
entering into each universe. Vasudeva takes the form of
Garbhodakasayi Vishnu lying within the half of the universe, which is
full with the water of His perspiration from the pangs of multiple
births. Vasudeva (Garbhodakasayi Vishnu) with Neela Shakti
(Tamas) evolves as the Shankarshana; with Bhu Shakti He expands
into Pradyumna (Rajas) and with Sri Shakti He evolves as Aniruddha
(Satwa Guna)[16]. There is an intermingling of the Guna’s (modes of
nature), and the prevailing modes shall dominate the nature of the
expansion.
Figure 1: Narayana & Creation
[
[
[
[
The expansions of Sankarshana (Neela Shakti – Tamas) further
evolve into the Maha Tatwa (the primordial five states of physical
existence) while those of Pradyumna (Bhu Shakti – Rajas) evolve into
Ahamkara (individual ego) and Aniruddha (Sri Shakti – Satwa)
evolves into the demiurge Brahma (Ahamkara murti). This is
conceived as the stem of the lotus (akin to the umbilical chord)
growing out of the navel of Garbhodakasayi Vishnu (as Aniruddha).
The stem has a thousand petal lotus as its apex (like the Sahasrara
Chakra – thousand petal Chakra in the cranium) on which resided
Brahma. The stem has been equated to the three Loka (planes of
existence) or to fourteen Loka depending on the context. Such
brilliant imagery helps to clear many a misconception. For example
there is this never ending debate about the correct time of birth – as
to (a) whether it is the Garbha pravesha or coming out of the uterus,
(b) Nadi sodhana – cutting of the umbilicus or (c) Prathama rodana –
first cry? If we were to accept this imagery of Brahma on the
umbilicus of Garbhodakasayi Vishnu as symbolizing birth, then it is
time of cutting of the umbilical chord, which is the correct birth
moment.
Figure 2: Karanodakasayi-Vishnu
The Vishnu Purana confirms this postulation and adds that the
‘Paramatma’ is the ‘Purusha’ and adds that He is ‘Kaala’ or time (the
controller of the sixteen laws of material action). Thus evolved the
concept of Kaala Purusha (personification of time as an aspect of
God) and the Bha-Chakra (zodiac) as the celestial clock that not only
represents the Kaala Purusha but also indicates the quality of time.
Kshirodakasayi Vishnu or the Paramatma expands from
Vasudeva/Garbhodakasayi Vishnu into the body of Brahma (through
the Satvic incarnation Aniruddha) and thereafter enters the body of
every living being to reside in the heart (lotus[17]). By a similar
process, the Jeevatma (or the individual personal soul) also enters the
body and shares a berth next to the Param Atma in the heart.
Parasara[18] has opined that the Paramatma resides in all Jeeva’s i.e.
all living beings have a portion of the divine spark of Vishnu within
their hearts. The potency of this spark of Vishnu is called Paramatma-
amsa whereas the potency of his or her own individual soul is called
Jeeva-amsa.
[
[
Muni the legendary founder of this system of philosophy[19] gave this
knowledge to His mother Devahuti and is different from Kapila Muni
as indicated in the Bhagavatam. The principal difference is in the
view of the Purusha as being the prime creator (Krishna/Kapila) and
just an inactive spectator of the evolution of Prakriti (Isvarakrishna).

Bhagavat Gita is called the Akshara’ (syllable), immutable Brahma.
Thus, if Narayana is said to be even above this sound syllable.
[
3] Narayana is composed of two words ‘Nara’ meaning ‘any body’ and
‘Ayana’ meaning ‘Goal’. Thus the composite word Narayana means
the ultimate goal of every body both living and non-living or mobile
and immobile. In a more subtle sense it refers to the individual soul
(Microcosm) endeavoring to attain Union (Yoga) with the Universal
Soul (Macrocosm). Thus, Narayana also means this universal soul or
supreme personality of God.

33 Devas (Pt. Sanjay Rath)
INTRODUCTION
Most scholars misinterpret the word ‘Deva’ as meaning ‘God’. In
reality, there are 33 Deva’s with about 330 million forms. The word is
derived from the root Divu that has ten meanings[1] (for a better
understanding, refer to the glossary) –
1. Krida - sporting
2. Vijigisha - conquest
3. Vyavahar - occupation/pursuit
4. Dyuti - intellectual inspiration or brilliancy
5. Stuti – praise
6. Moda – pleasure
7. Mada – exhilaration, intoxication
8. Swapna – dream
9. Kanti – splendor
10. Gati – direction, movement
These words define the purpose of a Deva. Jaimini defines Deva or
Devata as indicated by the Devata Karaka[2] planet. This is the third
in the hierarchy (of spiritual needs) after the Atmakaraka (helps in
the determination of the Ista/Isa directing emancipation from the
cycle of rebirth) and Amatya Karaka (deity symbolizing sustenance in
this world). Thus Deva or Devata is the Guru and guides or
[
[
[
[
[
[
illuminates certain inherent abilities that will develop in this life or
the spiritual path or that which leads to fulfillment of desires etc.
Nirukta[3] defines Deva as that which (a) confers benefits (Danada)
(b) illumines (Deepanad) or (c) is the source of such knowledge or
illumination (Dyutanad). Thus, translating deva as God is
conceptually incorrect. This view is further confirmed without an iota
of doubt in the Aitereya Brahmana[4] as well as the Sathapatha
Brahmana[5]. The natural question is ‘if Deva’s are not Gods, then
who or what are the Deva’s and in what manner are they linked to
Jyotish’?
Sathapatha Brahmana 14.16:
Katame te trayastrimshat iti ashtou vasavah; ekadasa Rudra,
dwadasa-Adityah ta ekatrimshat; Indraschaiva Prajapatischa
trayatrimshaviti.
(We) speak of the thirty three (Deva) of which eight Vasu, eleven
Rudra and twelve Aditya add up to thirty one. Indra and Prajapati
included bring their number to thirty three.
1. Asta Vasava (Eight Vasu’s)
Sathapatha Brahmana 14.16:
Katame Vasava iti. Agnischa prithivi cha vayusch-
antarikshamchaadityascha dyouscha chandramascha nakshatrani
chaite Vasava aeteshu hidam sarve vasu hitam aete hidam sarve
vasayante taddyudidam sarve vasayante tasmad Vasava iti.
The Sathapatha Brahmana gives the list of eight Vasu as (1) Agni (2)
Prithvi (3) Vayu (4) Antariksha (5) Aditya (6) Dyou (7) Chandrama
and (8) Nakshetra. Prima facie this may seem a bit contradictory as
Aditya has also been mentioned separately but here it refers to the
Sun, Chandra refers to the Moon, Nakshetra are the lunar mansions
or the constellations and the remaining five represent the states of
material existence. These eight form the primary source of
enlightenment about the self. They represent the basic variables that
define every creation and its original source of illumination in the ten
methods defined earlier as the purpose of the deva. The Vishnu
Purana makes this more lucid in the definition of the Vasu’s as
[
[
[
1. Apa – Jala Tatwa or liquid
2. Dhara – Prithvi Tatwa or solid
3. Anila – Vayu Tatwa or Gas
4. Anala – Agni Tatwa or Energy
5. Dhruva – the pole star representing
a. Akash Tatwa – the sky or Vacuum and
b. fixity of the zodiac i.e. the relevance of Ayanamsa
6. Soma – The Moon
7. Pratyusha – the recurring dawn representing
a. The Sun – as causing the night and day i.e. the source of light
behind the dawn,
b. Lagna – The ascendant or the point in the eastern horizon as
representing the self and is equated to the dawn.
8. Prabhasa – splendorous lights of the stars that are grouped into
27/28 Nakshetra (Constellations).
This list is the first principle of Jyotish where the bodies that create
all beings as well as guide them through various activities are defined.
These include (a) the Sun, (b) the Moon, (c) the constellations called
Nakshetra and (d) the Pancha Tatwa or (the guidance/direction from)
the five states of existence of all matter and energy. Thus, the
luminaries (Sun & Moon), the five planets Mars, Mercury, Jupiter,
Venus & Saturn [ruling the five states of energy (Agni), solid (Prithvi),
ether (Akash), liquid (Jala) and gas (Vayu) respectively] and the 27
(or 28) lunar mansion called Nakshetra form the first principle. Birth
implies creation and this is the Satvic principle of sustenance of the
born or created being.
2. Ekadasa Rudra
Sathapatha Brahmana 14.16:
Katame Rudra iti. Dasheme purushe praanaa atmaikadashah te
yadasmat martyaacchreeradtkramanti atha rodanti tad yad rodayanti
tasmad Rudra iti.
The eleven Rudra[6] are defined as Deva’s. Ten of these are Rudra are
responsible for holding the ‘Prana’ (vital life force or air) within the
body that sustains the breathing and life. Thus, their nature is akin to
Marut or storm god and in a sense like Vayu (the air element). The
eleventh Rudra is Maheswara and is responsible for the Atma (soul).
These are called Rudra from the root Rud meaning to weep as their
[
‘going away’ results in the death of the native and the near and dear
ones weep.
These eleven Rudra (including Maheswara) are responsible for the
destruction of everything that has been created and form the second
principle of Jyotish. In the first stage there is the destruction of the
physical body by the ‘going away’ of any of the ten Rudra. Thereafter
the Atma (soul) is separated from the Mana (mind) by Maheswara
(Shiva) the eleventh Rudra. The two nodes of the Moon called Rahu
& Ketu are the destroyers. Rahu has the responsibility of destroying
the Luminaries and the signs (Dwadasa Aditya). Ketu destroys the
material creation represented by the Pancha Tatwa (in Jyotish the
five planets Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn) and the
Nakshetra. The Rudra can be viewed as the binding forces in any
created being, both living and non-living. They symbolize the strength
of God and are also the strength of the created being as their going
away results in the weakness of the body and it is destroyed.
3. Dwadasa Aditya
Sathapatha Brahmana 14.16:
Katame Aditya iti. Dwadasamasah samvatsarasya
Aeta Adityah aete hidam sarvamadadaanayanti taddwididam
sarvamadadaana yanti tasmaditya iti.
Dwadasa means twelve and Masa means the month – thus the
Dwadasa (twelve) Aditya are the twelve months represented by the
twelve signs in the zodiac. The month is variously defined in Jyotish
and this specific reference indicates the motion of the during the
period between two consecutive conjunctions with the Moon. This is
the synodic month and is about 29.5 days, which for convenience is
taken as 30 days. Since the average geo-centric motion of the Sun
during 30 days is 30 degrees, this defines the Saura Masa (solar
month) which is the third principle of Jyotish. Twelve such ’30 degree
motions’ result in the Sun returning to its original position and this
defines the Samvatsara or ‘solar year’. Thus, the third principle of
Jyotish is that of time & space which is defined by the Dwadasa
Aditya (twelve signs of the zodiac with the Sun as their overlord). The
solar month and solar year are the foundation of Vedic astrology and
that further sub-divisions of time are to be determined based on solar
motion. The word Samvatsara means ‘year’ and specifically ‘solar
year’ as this is based on the Dwadasa Aditya. This knowledge is of
vital importance in determining the period of influence of the planets
called ‘dasa’. Often astrologers are bogged down with misconceptions
about using the solar or lunar year or even other variously defined
time periods. This indicates the lack of appreciation of this principle
of time & space relationship as defined by the Dwadasa Aditya.
They are called Aditya as they are the distributors of food and all
materials required for creation and sustenance (Dana) as well as
inspiration, exhilaration, intoxication, sexual vitality and vigor
(Mada). The Aditya are the givers and everything comes from them.
Thus, the twelve signs represent all the material forms of creation.
4. Indra & Prajapati
Sathapatha Brahmana 14.16:
Katama Indrah katamah prjapatiriti. stanayitnurevendro yagyah
prajapatiriti. Katama eko deva iti sa Brahma tyadityachakshate.
Stanayitnu means thunder or lightening and refers to the electrical
impulses that are used by the brain to control the senses. Thus Indra
is the demigod controlling the senses and the working of the brain as
well as the intelligence of all creation. Yagyam is the worship or praise
for Prajapati the progenitor. This is the fourth principle of Jyotish and
is called Lagna or the ascendant representing the seat of Prajapati the
progenitor and the ‘praise worthy one’. Indra is seated on the throne
of the zodiac indicated by the point in the mid-heaven. This is the
area of the tenth house counted from the Lagna or ascendant sign.
The zodiac at any point of time, is divided into two halves by the line
of the horizon. Since the earth rotates from the west to the east, the
planets and other stars seem to move in the opposite direction from
any stationary point of observation on the earth. The Sun rises in the
east in the morning, ascends to mid-heaven (middle of the sky) by
mid-day and then starts descending till it sets in the western horizon.
Lagna is the point in the eastern horizon that is just about to ascend
or rise into the heavens signified by the visible half of the zodiac and
is akin to sunrise. This is called the ascendant. Similarly the point in
the western horizon which is just about to descend or go under the
horizon is called the descendant. The zodiac is divided into two halves
called the Drusya (visible) and Adrusya (invisible) by the line of the
horizon with the sky in the visible half and the portion below the
horizon in the invisible half. The Drusya Rasi or zodiac signs
(complete or portions) in the visible half are the heavens called loka
whereas the Adrusya Rasi or zodiac signs (complete or portions) in
the invisible portion or below the horizon are called hell or Tala.
There are two postulates based on (1) material or physical existence
and (2) spiritual existence to describe these heavens and hell.
4.1. The three material worlds
The physical universe can be classified into three parts called Bhu
loka (earth), Bhuva loka (firmament or the solar system which
contains the nava graha) and Swarga loka (Sky containing the fixed
stars which is the residence of the demi-gods). The geocentric zodiac
(Bhu loka as its center) limited to the Bhuva loka is called the Vishnu
chakra (Tropical zodiac where the weather and other phenomena of
the atmosphere and beyond are experienced). The geocentric zodiac
based on the fixed stars in the sky is called the Narayana chakra
(Sidereal zodiac). These terms find specific mention in the Vishnu
purana. The pious Hindu recited the prayer “Om Bhur-bhuva-svah”
every morning for the blessings of this material creation as a prefix to
the Gayatri mantra.
4.2. The Fourteen spiritual worlds
Thus, there are seven heavens and seven hell. The heavens called
loka[7] are in seven parts:
i. Visible portion of the Lagna (ascendant
sign/house) that has ascended i.e. from the start of the sign to the
longitude of the ascendant called Satya loka symbolized by the
thousand petal lotus on which rests Prajapati (form of Brahma) the
progenitor. This is the seat of the creator and He is praised by all His
creation. It shows fame as a consequence of the praise and health and
vigor.
ii. Visible portion of the seventh house/sign that is
about to descend or go into the invisible half i.e. from the longitude of
the descendant to the end of the sign called Bhu loka (the earthly
plane). It shows the death and re-birth as this is also the Mrityu loka
or ‘where death occurs’.
iii. The tenth house/sign (with the mid-heaven as
the throne of Indra in it) called Svah or Swarga loka.
iv. The remaining signs/houses in the visible
[
portion (8th, 9th, 11th & 12th ) are the Bhuva, Maha Gyanah and
Tapah loka.
Thus, the seven heavens are Bhu, Bhuva, Svah, Maha, Janah, Tapah &
Satya loka[8] and the deities of the planets Mars, Sun, Venus,
Mercury, Moon, Saturn and Jupiter respectively, preside over these
loka. The seven hell are the seven signs in the invisible portion of the
zodiac called Atala, Bitala, Sutala, Talatala, Rasatala, Mahatala and
Patala respectively. There are seven Narka (most inferior hells for
punishment) below these seven Tala and are all situated at the nadir
i.e. the point exactly opposite mid-heaven in the fourth house. The
spiritual Hindu recites the mantra “Om Bhur- Om Bhuva – Om svah
– Om Maha – Om Gyana – Om Tapah – Om Satyam” everyday as a
prefix to the Gayatri mantra aspiring for the highest heavens.
Thus, in any chart, the seventh house is examined for death and
rebirth. If death occurs during the period of the planet in the seventh
house or its lord, then rebirth is sure to occur. The place of rebirth
can be guessed from the planet / sign in the seventh house. If Mars is
in the seventh house, then rebirth shall be in an island like Sri Lanka.
Others indications can be read from standard texts. It is also for this
very reason that Parasara recommends the Mritunjaya Mantra with
its prayer for Moksha (emancipation from the cycle of rebirth) during
such periods of planets connected with the seventh house. The 12th
house or the portion just before the Lagna is the Satya Loka, the
highest spiritual point and beyond this is the spiritual region of no-
return. By constantly repeating Om Tat Sat and living a truthful life,
the worshipper attains Satya Loka and the highest heavens beyond
from where there is no return to this Mrityu loka.
Thus, we conclude that the 33 Deva’s are the basic paradigm of
Jyotish and that they can also be grouped based on mobility. These
groups would include:
a. The immobile or stationary stars form the group of 27 (or 28)
Nakshetra,
b. The space and time divisions form the group of Rasi or Dwadasa
Aditya and
c. The luminaries (1) Sun & (2) Moon, the Pancha Tatwa
controllers (3) Mars, (4) Mercury, (5) Jupiter, (6) Venus & (7) Saturn
and the Rudra representatives (8)Rahu & (9)Ketu form the third
[
group of mobile bodies called Graha. Since these are nine in number,
they are called Nava Graha. We shall use the forced definition of
‘planets’ to indicate these nine mobile bodies. The Sun is not mobile
within the solar system but from a geocentric viewpoint i.e. assuming
the earth to be stationary, its movement is translated to be the
movement of the Sun.

CHAPTER 12
Illustration:
In the following Horoscope, the following Vipareeta Rajayogas are
present:
Left/ Right Parts: The portion already risen indicates left side of the
body (while the one yet to rise, i.e. the invisible half, denotes the right
side of the body). (BPHS 12.12-12.14)
Limbs Affected: The limb, related to a malefic by occupation, will
have ulcers, or scars, while the one, related to a benefic, will have a
mark (like moles etc). So say the Jyotishis. (BPHS 12.15)
Marks from Birth or later: Should these planets be in their own Rāśi,
or Amsa at birth, then the wound, or mole are right from birth.
Otherwise these will be caused later on (in appropriate periods).
(Saravali 4.6)
3. Interpretation
The three decanates divide the body into three parts. In each sign the
decanate where Lagna is placed, would show some part of head
(upper part: above the trunk), the 2nd decanate (from that of Lagna
Decanate) would show the organs of the middle part (from neck to
pelvis) and the 3rd decanate (from that of the Lagna) would show the
organs in the lower part (below the pelvis).
For illustration if the Lagna is rising in the 2nd decanate, then 2nd
decanate of all the signs shall show the part of the head, the 3rd
decanate, shall show the parts of the trunk and the 1st decanates of
signs shall show the parts of the lower third.
a. Lagna: The two side of the Lagna cusp represent two sides. From
the beginning of the Lagna sign (0deg) to the cusp falls in the visible
half and shall represent the left side of the body part and from the
cusp to the end of the sign falls in the invisible half and shall
represent the right side of the body part.
Thus it is noteworthy that the visible part of the zodiac at the moment
of birth (from 7th to 12th) show the left part of the body (controlled
by right side of the brain), while the invisible part of the zodiac
(Lagna to 7th) shows the right side of the body (controlled by the left
side of the brain). Thus one should remember the association -
Visible- Left; Invisible - Right.
4. Illustration:
Maharishis say that the moles, warts, birth marks, wounds and
sores etc can be predicted from the placement of planets in different
decanates. Lets see how it works. In the following horoscope, the
planets are placed in the following decanates:
The planets are placed in the following decanate:
The above mentioned body parts can have some moles or scars based
on whether it is occupied by benefics or malefics. I have for sure
wound marks or scars in my left knee where Mars is placed. I always
used to think, why am I so susceptible to wounds and bruises in my
left knee when I was a naughty kid, whereas my right knee is perfectly
fine. Saturn is also not lesser in anyway in inflicting its pain and
marks in left foot.
Chapter 14
These strengths are computed for the seven Grahas from Sun to
Saturn. The nodes are not considered.
2. STHANA BALA (Maximum: 480 virupa = 8 rupas)
Sthana means place and hence the sthana bala is calculated based on
the placement of the planets in different signs on various parameters,
such as how far are they placed from their exaltation sign etc. More
follows below:
2.2 Sapt Vargaj Bal (Maximum: 45*7 = 315 virupas = 5.25 rupas)
Rasi, Hora, Dreshkan, Saptamsa, Navamsa, Dwadashamsa and
Trimsamsa constitute the Sapta varga. The strength of the planets in
these seven divisional charts based on their placements in
moolatrikona, own sign, friendly sign etc. constitute the sapta varaj
bala. The method of their calculation is as follows:
Kendra: 60 Virupa
Panaphara: 30 Virupa
Apoklima: 15 Virupa
From this we can infer that the male planets are stronger in the
beginning of a sign, female planets are stronger in the middle part
and neutral planets gains strength in the ending part of a sign.
3. KALA BALA:
3.1 Natonnata Bala: (Maximum 60 virupa = 1 rupa)
Natonnata is composed of two terms nata and unnata. Unnata is the
difference between midnight and the apparent birth time. Unnata
when deducted from 30 Ghatikas gives Nata. Moon, Mars and Saturn
are stronger at night, whereas Sun, Jupiter and Venus are stronger
during the day. Mercury is stronger both during day and night.
Hence, the nata bala is seen for Moon, Mars and Saturn and unnata
bala is seen for Sun, Jupiter and Venus. Irrespective of day or night
Mercurygets the bala of 60 virupa or 1 rupa.
At midnite, which marks the peak of night, the diurnal planets are
weaker. Thus at that time the unnata bala of the diurnal planets Sun,
Jupiter and Venus is zero, whereas the nata bala of the nocturnal
planets Moon, Mars and Saturn is full 60 virupas. At the noon hr.
when the day is at peak and the Sun is placed exactly on the meridian,
the unnata bala of the Sun, Jupiter and Venus is full 60 virupas and
the nata bala of Moon, Mars and Saturn is zero. At other time the bala
is proportionate.
At Surise and Sunset, which marks the junction of the day and the
night, the natonnata bala for all the planets (excluding Mercury,
whose bala is always 60), is the same, i.e., 30 Virupas.
The fluctuation of the Natonnata bala for the planets can be seen as
follows:
Diurnal Planet Nocturnal Planet
Sunrise 30 30
Noon 60 00
Sunset 30 30
Midnite 00 60
The Benefics are stronger in the Sukla Paksha and the Malefics are
stronger in the Krsna Paksha. This forms the basis for calculation of
the paksha bala. The benefics are Jupiter, Venus, well associate
Mercury, whereas the malefics are Sun, Mars and Saturn. The paksha
bala of the Moon is 2 rupas (120 virupas) at the end time of Full
Moon and New Moon. The Paksha bala of the Moon goes down to 60
virupas, during the middle of the pakshas.
Find the angular distance between Sun and Moon. If the angular
duration exceeds 180 degrees, deduct the same from 360. The
degrees so obtained when divided by 3, which will indicate the Paksha
Bala of each of the benefic Grahas. The Paksh Bal of benefic should be
deducted from 60, which will go to each malefic, as Paksh Bal.
3.4.2 Maasa Bala: Like Varsha Lord, each saurya masa (Solar Month)
commences when the Sun transits each sign of the zodiac. Take the
weekday lord on which Sun has moved to a new sign as the lord of the
Masa. If Sun has moved after 00:00 hrs of civil calendar, the previous
weekday has to be taken.
3.4.3 Dina Bala: Dina is weekday. The lord of the weekday is the lord
of the day.
3.4.4 Hora Bala: Hora means planetary hour. Each day from sunrise
to next sunrise is divided into 24 equal parts of one hour. These
Horas are ruled by the 7 Grahas from Sun to Saturn. The first Hora of
the day is ruled by the Lord of the week day. The 2nd one is ruled by
the Lord of the 6th week day, counted from the first ruler. The 3rd
Hora is ruled by the Lord of the 6th week day, counted from the 2nd
Hora Lord. Similarly it proceeds in the same manner, till the first
Hora of the next day is taken over by the Lord of that day himself. At
a particular time, the lord of a particular hora gets the Hora bala of 60
Virupas.
From the strength of the Varsa, Maasa, Dina and Hora lord, we can
see that Hora lord gets the maximum strength, i.e., 60 Virupas,
highlighting the importance of the hora lord over the other lords at
any time.
3.5 Ayan Bala
The Earth's equitorial plane when projected to the celestial spehere (a
hypothetical sphere which has shows the visible stars and planets), is
known as the celestial equator. The planets which we see, can be
above, below or placed on the celestial equator at any point of time.
The angle which they make with respect to the plane of celestial
equator measured from center of earth is called the declination or
Kranti. The Declination of Sun is maximum, i.e., 23°27’ during the
solstices where the Sunrises either on Tropic of Cancer or Capricorn,
whereas during the equinoxes, the declination becomes zero.
4. DIK BALA
The planets gains full Dikbala in the following houses:
1st (Lagna Bhava) - Jupiter and Mercury (Ethery and Earthy element)
When the planets are placed away from the bhava where they get the
full dik bala, there strength is proportionately reduced. The maximum
strength attained here is 60 virupa or 1 rupa. To compute the dikbala
find the angular distance of the planet and the 7th of bhava where
they get the full dik bala. If the angular distance is more than 180
then, subtract it from 360. The result when divided by 3, gives the
dikbala of the planets. The longitude of the bhava is same as the
Lagna cusp as per the equal house distribution.
5. NAISARGIKA BALA
Naturally the planets are stronger in the order of Saturn, Mars,
Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Moon and Sun in the ascending order.
There natural strength is computed by dividing one Rupa by 7 and
multiply the resultant product by 1 to 7 separately to obtain the
strength of Saturn, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Moon and Sun
respectively.
This happens to be
Planet In virupas In rupas
Sun 60.00 1.00
Moon 51.43 0.86
Mars 17.14 0.29
Mercury 25.70 0.43
Jupiter 34.28 0.57
Venus 42.85 0.71
Saturn 08.57 0.14
6. DRIG BALA
Drig is derived from Dris, which is the root of the verb "to see". So
this strength is gained by the virtue of the aspect (Graha Drsti) of
different planets on a planet. The aspect of benefics are considered to
be strength and the aspect of malefics are considered to be
weaknesses. For calculation of this strength, the partial aspects are
also taken into consideration.
From the drik balas of a planet we can judge what is the strength of
aspects of the benefics and malefics on it and their combined
influences. Aspect of benefics promote the house owned by the
planet, by rendering the lord strong. It also enhances the house of
which the said planet is a karaka.
7. CHESTA BALA
Chesta means to move or to try. This strenth is attained by the
planets, excluding the lumeries by the the virtue of their kind of
movement. For Sun, the Ayana Bala becomes its chesta Bala, whereas
for Moon, the Paksha Bala becomes the chesta Bala. For other
planets, eight kinds of motions are attributed to they. These are:
• Vakra (retrogression)
• Anuvakra (entering the previous sign in retrograde motion)
• Vikal (devoid of motion)
• Mand (somewhat slower motion than usual)
• Mandatar (slower than the previous)
• Sama (neither fast nor slow)
• Char (faster than Sama)
• Atichar (entering next sign in accelerated motion)
The strengths, allotted due to such 8 motions are 60, 30, 15, 30, 15,
7.5, 45 and 30 virupas.
8. OTHER CONSIDERATRIONS:
8.1 Shad Bal requirements:
390, 360, 300, 420, 390, 330 and 300 Virupas are the Shad Bal
Pindas, needed for Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and
Saturn etc. to be considered strong. If the strength exceeds the above-
mentioned values, the Grah is deemed to be very strong. A strong
graha shall protect its houses and karakakatva and is more capable of
giving its results. However, the nature of the results shall be
influenced by the ownership, placements and the yogas the planet
involved in. However, it is important to know what is the strength of
each of the elements of the shadbala, to know the exact nature of the
result
9. USE OF SHADBALA
The individual elements of the shadbala show different aspects in our
life. They are as follows:
1. Sthana Bala: This planet is the giver of position and status. This
also shows which positions are most auspicious for us and where shall
we be most comfortable.
2. Dig Bala: This shows the direction which shall be good for us for
growth in the career or self development.
3. Kaala Bala: This shows which time is best suitable for us for
undertaking an activity.
4. Cheshta Bala: This shows what drives us, our inherent desires and
purpose of our struggle in this life.
5. Naisargika Bala: This is of lesser consquence as this remains
constant all through out. This is to be used in conjunction with other
strengths. This indicate which planets are naturally more able to
dictate their results.
6. Drik Bala: This shows which planet shall be favourable all through
out in the life of native as this is based on the aspect of benefics on the
planet.
10. CONCLUSION
This is still a nacent area and require more researches to find out the
exact use of each of the elements of the shadbala, rather than using
the total values of the shadbala for analysing the dasas. We must
understand that, each point of time is influenced by one or other
planets with varying extents and we can judge these subtle influences,
by analysing which planets are stronger at which point of time.
One good use I found with these balas is find the directional
influences. For illustration, at this point of time while I am writing
this article, Sun is having highest kala bala and highest chesta bala. In
my rasi chart, Sun is the 9th lord placed in the 9th house with 10th
lord, where as in the siddhamsa it is placed in the 12th house being
the 6th lord. Chesta bala shows what are my desires or what am I
trying to do at this point of time. Sun being the 9th lord shows
teaching (with AK Mars shows that the desire is very strong); in the
siddhamsa, being the 6th lord in the 12th, it shows the attitude of
service (6th) without any motivation to gain (12th). In the dasamsa it
is placed in the 8th house being the 6th lord and I am here sitting,
without going to my office, writing this mail.
The kala bala is also highest that of Sun, shows that I should be doing
Sun's activity at this point of time. As Sun also shows that chesta as
mentioned above, I am able to do something which I crave for. When
I go further, I see that more strength (Kaala bala) is coming from the
Ayana Bala, showing that, this is also helping me achieving the
direction (Ayana) of my life. If the strength was due to Hora Bala,
then I would have done something, which was directed by my
environment and circumstances, like sitting in a Jyotish class or in a
conference.
What I have written, is only the tip of the iceberg, just hinting, how
much is there below the water, unexplored. So lets explore the
potencies of this beautiful scheme of strength given by Maharishi
Parasara.
CHAPTER 16
PHYSICAL FEATURES
Principle I: The Tattva of the sign shall influence the physical
features. The effect of various Tattva on the physical features is as
follows:
Fire: Robust physique and strong spine.
Earth: Stout and muscular
Air: Thin and Emaciated
Water: Plump and soft muscles with accumulated fat
Principle II: The Lord of the sign shall also influence. The physical
characteristics of the planets are given in the BPHS (Ch. 3), which is
as follows:

pittaprakrtiko dhiimaanh pumaanalpakacho dvija 23
§ Characteristics of Planets

Principle III: Along with the Lagna and Moon sign, the Navamsa
needs to checked for better understanding of the physical attributes of
person. Various texts like Nasta Jataka, Saravali etc. has given the
characteristics of people born with different Navamsa and need to be
studied.
In my opinion, the Lagna has more say over the facial features; Moon
has its say on the physique (body) and the Navamsa Lagna over the
complexion of the native. However, this is not conclusive; the readers
might check different combinations and form their own conclusion.
Principle IV: For Further Finer analysis, one must find the effect of
birth in different Hora and Drekkana. This can be studied from
classics like Saravali and is not included in the scope of this article.
NATURE OF ASCENDANT
Though the persons in this world cannot be classified under 12
categories, there is however some pronounced similarities between
persons born with a particular Lagna. For one, who is a keen
observer, these underline similarities in the way people born under a
particular ascendant would tend to surprise him. This effort to
classify humans into categories based on the underline similarities is
not unique to Jyotish and is a common phenomenon in Human
Psychology. Though the placements of planets in the horoscope shall
modify the horoscope quite considerably, this however, does not
diminish the importance of studying the nature of people born under
different ascendant as this forms the basis for the further analysis of a
horoscope. Although many authors both classical and modern, have
given the results of ascendants, my effort is more towards finding
some consistent principles which would eradicate the necessity of
mugging up the same.
Principle II: The lordship of the Ascendant shall get modified based
on the nature of the trinal signs and the relationship of different
planets with these trines.
Principle III: The attitude of the native towards various aspects of life
can be judged from the lordship of the houses, governing the said
aspect and the relationship between the sign and the karaka
governing the said house.
For illustration, Aquarians are the bravest of all others, since, the 3rd
from Aquarius is lorded by Mars (karaka of war) and Sun gets exalted
there and the sign itself is a fiery sign, showing the strong influence of
Agni (fire) on the third house and the resultant courage.
For example, Arians are more headstrong and determined like a small
child, whereas Pisceans are like old wise men.
Principle V: The symbols assigned to different signs of the zodiac
have their own meaning. They represent the characteristics that are
found the persons ruled by that signs. Hence it is important to study
the symbols seriously, to know the nature of the persons ruled by it.
For example, a Scorpion looks very calm and quite from outside,
however truly it is not, it might be scheming from inside and find the
opportune moment to attack its prey with its sting and paralyze it
completely. Hence these characteristics would be predominant in
Scorpio ascendants i.e., they might calmer from outside, however,
never dare to mess up with these persons.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ASCENDANTS
The following section describes the physical features as well as the
nature of person born in a particular ascendant. Though one cannot
literally apply this, this however, forms the basis for interpretation of
the nature of persons born in an ascendant. With practice, one can
find out the ascendant of a person by interacting with him/ her. One
must not over-emphasize the effect as mentioned here under on the
nature and physical characteristics of a person, since it gets blended
with the effect of other planets on the nature as well as the Navamsa,
Hora and Drekkana Lagna and planets placed there in. This is an
effort to present the effect of ascendant based on sound principles,
which alleviate the need to remembering them without
understanding.
I. ARIES
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Middle stature
Dry and lean body
Powerful and muscular limbs
Triangular face
Dark and bushy eyebrows
Long neck
Dark or reddish complexion (the second half is darker)
Rough, wiry and curly hair
Broad shoulders
NATURE
Energetic, Impulsive and Enthusiastic: Aries is the first signs of the
zodiac and thus full of creative energy. It is a fiery sign and hence the
qualities of fire namely energy, initiative, independence and
dominance shall be predominant in their nature. Since this the first
sign of the zodiac, the energy they have is that of a newly born and
they shall be they go by impulse rather than reason in doing things.
Their impulsive nature makes them prone to accidents of various
kinds from physical, psychological to other aspects of life such as
career etc. They are enthusiastic and their enthusiasm is expressed in
form of knowing things around them and get involved in their
surroundings.
Enterprising: The influence of the planets Mars and Sun who gets
exalted in this sign, gives them lots of enterprise. They would get
involve in each and everything around them and take initiative in
almost everything. However, since lack of maturity, many times those
initiatives can be detrimental to their self.
Prompt to react: They reflexes are pretty strong and they reach very
fast to the happening around them. However, sometimes they lack
the ability of judgment, before they react to certain things. They must
learn to restrain them self in taking quick action in certain
circumstances. Though it might be their one of the strong point, not
to waste much time dilly- dallying and take prompt action; they must
use their rational ability to judge the matter before getting involved, if
the activity involve some risks.
Self- Confident: Self confidence is given by the lord of the sign and
also the planet which gets exalted in that sign, Sun. A natural
question would be why Sun’s qualities would be so predominant in
this sign, when we are seeing a sign ruled by Mars. However, one
must understand that Mars should have all the qualities for the Sun
to get the feeling of achievement when placed there. This is one of the
biggest assets of the persons ruled by Aries.
Emotional: Emotional maturity also comes out of age. Since this sign
is ruled by Mars, one would think twice as to how Mars rules emotion.
The doubt is valid to certain extent as Arians would rarely show the
signs of emotion, however, deep down inside them, they have a heart
of a child, which gets quite emotional at times. Such person, if ignore
their emotions might suffer sudden emotional breakdown. Hence,
persons of this sign needs to be more introspective towards their
feelings and emotions.
Generous and liberal: One of the greatest assets of the fiery signs is
generosity and broad outlook. Since they have a fiery inside, they
have a burning desire to remove the darkness in others life. If all
other planets are well placed, they generously donate their
possessions without many qualms. Their broad mindedness makes
them liberal in their judgment of people and surroundings.
NATURE
Intelligent:This is one of the upachayas of the natural zodiac. The
upachayas are the houses which helps in the growth of the Lagna (or
the house under consideration). The 3rd and 6th house, viz., the first
two upachayas are governed by Mercury, which shows that
intelligence is one of the key component of survival and growth in this
world. Mercury rules the intelligence which helps us in the survival in
this world. This is however, different from the intelligence which
makes us superior to rest of animals in this world, which is ruled by
Jupiter. The operational intelligence of Mercury is borne out of the
fact that it rules the skills of communication and expression, which
plays a crucial role in our existence.
Active and rational mind: Since Mercury is the fastest moving planet
and also closest to Sun; it is very quick to react. Moreover, they are
highly rational. Usually they do not accept things just based on their
face value and being endowed with the scientific mind, they try
analyzing the thing or situation rationally.
Melodious voice: This is the 2nd house of the natural zodiac, which
represent speech. Being lorded by Venus; the planet of relationship
and attraction, they are naturally endowed with a charming and
melodious voice. They like to merry around while humming,
wherever they are. In addition to the lordship of Venus, this sign also
exalts Moon, the planet who rules singing.
Fond of good food: 2nd house also rules food as it is the house of
sustenance. Being the 2nd house of the zodiac, it makes the person, a
lover of good food. They are connoisseur of food and taste.
Elegant: They are a firm believer of elegance and demeanor. They are
naturally very well mannered and believe in fair play. This is a natural
gift from the owner of the sign, Venus.
Calm and Composed: They are generally calm and composed and
have a great endurance power, however when they are provoked they
become angry like a bull. When they get angry they are very difficult
to control as they have a powerful built and a tendency to be
stubborn. Their composure is also based on their tendency to
conserve energy and not to waste it in unwarranted activities.
Believe in harmony: Being ruled by Artistic and Benevolent Venus,
they like to stay away from any kind of fight and would not budge
from their stand unless instigated. However, once instigated, they are
difficult to control, just like a Bull.
Firm, determined and stubborn: Though they are slow and steady in
carrying out their activities; however they have a great power of
perseverance and persistence to see through the conclusion of their
activities. Since they are not impulsive, they shall not be agitated by
the delay in the activities and patiently wait till the activity is done.
Since they have a strong will- power they try carrying out their
pursuits in spite of all odds, however they will take their own time
and do it with their own pace until the objective is reached.
Cheerful: This sign, exalts Moon and hence shows a place where the
mind becomes extremely delighted. Thus the natives ruled by this
sign are naturally very cheerful; however, since Moon represents
fluctuations and vacillations, they shall also be very Moody, while
being cheerful at the same time. Due to the predominant influence of
water element in this sign, the natives of these signs are also
emotional and search for support from outside. This makes them
prone to search happiness in their own community (2nd house also
rules family and community). They are hence easily swayed away by
flattery.
Self-centered: Usually the natives ruled by this signs are self centered
and they do not have a big friends circle. They like to be contended
with their own self and focus on planning out the activities and goals
of their life and also the ways to achieve it. This can be said that they
live in their own world of imagination. The negative side of this is
that, they are hardly moved by the happening around that and have a
attitude of “I do not care; whatever is happening, let it happen. Also
this makes them less affectionate and touched by other emotions, so
much so that many call the natives of this sign as “Cold hearted”

Analysis of a Bhava V- Planets in First house
INTRODUCTION
This section shall enumerate the different effects of all the planets in
different houses. The effects of all the planets shall be divided into
two distinct categories namely the favourable effect, the unfavourable
effects:
Lagna- Self
Second- Family as a whole
Third- Siblings in general and younger siblings in particular
Fourth- Mother
Fifth- Children; Secret friends
Sixth- Enemies, maternal uncles
Seventh- Spouse
Eighth-
Ninth- Father
Tenth-
Eleventh- Friends, Paternal uncle
Twelfth- Secret enemies
The natural benefics (Jupiter, Mercury, Moon & Venus) are good for
the health and longivity of the relations and natural malefics (Saturn,
Mars, Sun, Rahu & Ketu) cause health troubles and reduction in
longevity and health. In the the third house malefics give lesser
siblings and in the fifth house it gives difficulties in birth of children
and also lesser in numbers.
THE LAGNA
Lagna is primarily a kendra bhava and secondarily a trikona bhava
and hence Parashara says that this bhava is specifically auspicious of
all natives. If there is affliction to this bhava, the whole horoscope is
affected. Malefics placed here can harm the bhava, however since this
is a kendra bhava, if those malefics (Mars or Saturn) are placed in
own house or exaltation, they constitute two mahapurusha yoga
namely Ruchaka and Sasa Mahapurusha yoga. When such
mahapurusha yoga occurs, the planet doesnot harm the bhava and
instead promote the bhava.
The influence of the planets on the physical features and nature, while
placed on the Lagna can be seen from the characteristics of the
planets, which are as follows:
§ Sun
o Has honey-coloured, golden Brown or Tawny eyes (madhu pingala
drk)
o Has Sqarish Face (Chaturasrah)
o Has bilious temeperament (pitta prakrti)
o Is intelligent (Dhiman)
o Has limited hair (Puman alpaka)
§ Moon
o Is extremely windy and phlegmatic (bahu vata kapha)
o Is Learned (Pragnya)

o Is angry (Krodhi)
o Has thin waist and physique (Krsah Madhya Tanu)

o He is of windy temperament (vata prakrti)
o He is intelligent (Dhiman)
o Ketu is akin to Rahu
Note: Terms inside the closed brackets are the sanskrit term taken
from BPHS.
Since the Lagna signify the self and the personality of the native, the
influence of different planets shall influence the personality of the
native too. If more planets are placed in the Lagna (or aspect it), the
person would be broad minded as he would be having the attitude /
personality traits bestowed by all planets. Many shastras say that
such people will be a king, which in modern context mean an able
leader or a natural leader.
This is a Marana Karaka Sthana for Saturn and hence the natural
significations of Saturn such as longevity gets severely affected.
However, if they also constitute the Mahapurusha yoga, the effect
undergo transformation and the Marana Karaka avastha is cancelled.

The Bhavas which have benefics in the 2nd, 7th and the 12th or 4th
and 10th from them are considered favorable. (27)
Out of all the afflictions, if the two or three of them are present, the
bhava suffers annihilation
Benefics if strong contribute good fully, malefics if weak give their evil
in full (34)
If the lord and the karaka of a bhava are strong and occupy favourable
houses, then the indications of the bhava will be fully experienced. On
the contrary if they are weak and occupy the 6th/ 8th or 12th, the
results of that bhava will be negetive or feeble (39)
If the two, the lord and karaka of a bhava, if one is strong and the
other is weak, then the influence should be considered to be mixed in
nature (41)
Such bhavas as have any relationships with the Lagna or its lord such
as aspect, association, kendra disposition etc. shall be surely
experienced.
Benefics in the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th become unfavourable. Malefics
in the 3rd, 6th or 11th become favourable. The most important of all
these houses is Lagna. The 5th and 9th houses are equally important.
It is these three bhavas that benefics show their greatest good and
malefics their worst evil. (44)
When Bhavas are ruined: When the lord of the 8th from a certain
bhava or saturn transits the bhava and at the same time, the dasa /
antar of the 6th, 8th or 12th operates, the bhava under consideration
suffers. Similarly diseases signified in the various parts of the body as
signified by the bhava concerned can be predicted.

Analysis of a Bhava I- Significations of Houses
INTRODUCTION
Analysis of bhavas is the first step to be taken in interpretation of the
horoscope. Though many things have been written on this so far,
there are many inconsistencies in the books written by various
authors. These inconsistencies tend to discourage any new students of
Jyotisha. Thus this article strives to present the subject in a very
systematic manner and hopes that the Jyotish enthusiasts and the
beginners would gain substantially from this.
Malefics placed here makes the person unhappy at his native place/
home and makes him leave home / native place and go to foreign land
to settle down. Where as benefics makes the person enjoy happiness

Analysis of Bhava XII- Planets in the Eighth House
INTRODUCTION
Eighth house shows the sum total of all our past karma, for which we
have taken birth in this world. The birth in this world is due to all the
sins and mistakes we have done in the past life/ lives and hence this
house signify the weaknesses which make us bind to this illusory
world. Once all the karmas are redeemed, there is no need of staying
any longer in this world and hence, this house also becomes the
houses of longevity.
Almost all shastras say that there should not be any malefics in the
eighth house, otherwise the longevity of the native is severely
curtailed. However, malefic such placed is either exalted or own
house, then the longevity is not much affected. Along with the
longevity of the native, this house also rule the longevity of
relationships or marital ties. Malefics placed here can affect the
marital harmony and longevity of the marriage. Among malefics,
Mars’s placement is the worst placement and it goes by the name of

CHAPTER 23
While one checks out the transit, one need to note the following
things:
1. In the natal horoscope, one needs to find out the auspicious and
inauspicious planets. The auspicious planets are the yogakarakas, the
trinal lords, planets involved in good yogas and planets who are well
placed and bestowing good effects. During the malefic transit of such
planets their maleficenece are lessened and during the benefic transit
their beneficence are hightened. Similarly, if a planet is badly placed
and is eager to give inauspicious effects in the natal chart, during
malefic transit of such planets the maleficence is hightened and
during the benefic transits, the beneficence is reduced.
4. During Transits, the vedha houses also needs to be checked up. The
vedha houses are given for each planet in their sections. If a planet is
having a benefic transit and another planet is transiting the vedha
position, then the benefic effect of the transiting planet is obstructed.
Similarly, a malefic transit can be obstructed by the planets in vedha
to to the transiting position. All planets can have vedha on others,
excluding the combinaton of Father- Son pair namely Sun- Saturn
and Moon- Mercury.

Analysis of Bhava XVI- Planets in the Twelfth House
INTRODUCTION
Twelfth is the house of loss and the shatras call it the Vyaya Bhava.
Losses can mean financial as well as losses of other significations.
Malefics placed here cause losses on undesirable expenses or on bad
things whereas benefics placed here cause the expenses on good
causes such as charity etc.
If planets who are placed here are afflicted then the person is
compelled by the circumstances to spend huge sum on unworthy
things. Thus, if planets are placed here, they should not be afflicted at
least. Beneficial aspects (aspect of natural benefics) on this house
helps to keep expenses in control as well as reducing expenditure on
unwanted circumstances. Though the benefics fortify this house, the
lose their own significance and this is hightened when they are badly
placed and/ or afflicted.

Analysis of Bhava XV- Planets in the Eleventh House
INTRODUCTION
The eleventh house is the house of gains and is known as Labha
Bhava. The gains though mainly seen in terms of monetary gains, in
general this house signify the gain of all objectives and desires. It is
interesting to note that the third house is the house of desires and
counted in the anti-zodiacal direction, the 3rd house shows the
fulfilment of desires. This the why Maharishi Jaimini says that this is
the house of Hara or destruction of desires.
From the Argala perspective, the planets placed in this house shall
have dhanargala on the 10th house of karmaphala; sukhargala on the
8th house of aayu and labhargala on the Lagna bhava. Thus the

CHAPTER 24
Sri Yantra
I am giving here the diagram of the Sri Yantra. This diagram is
extemely difficult to make, unless we have the understanding of the
ways it can be made. The presence of this diagram from very ancient
time, make the scientist speculate that the mathematics was highly
advanced in ancient India, without which this yantra is nearly
impossible to make.

Chinnamasta (Rahu)
Dhumavati (Ketu)
Tripura Bhairavi (Lagna)
a. Conjunction
b. Planet aspecting the dasa lord
c. Planet having subha-argala on the dasa lord
d. Planet exchanges position (either rasi, nakshatra or navamsa) with
the dasa lord
e. Any planets who share the same dharma as of the dasa lord. The
following planets share the same dharma as of the dasa lord.
i. All saumya grahas (Jupiter, Venus, well associated Mercury and
strong Moon (in paksha bala) have the same dharma
ii. All papa grahas (Saturn, Mars, Sun, badly associated Mercury and
weak Moon)have the same dharma
iii. Yogakaraka- The other planet involved in the yoga, leaving the
yogakaraka under consideration
Note: In all the cases, if the yoga is auspicious, then the auspicious
results of the dasa lord is felt and vice-versa
Thus the mahadasa lord gives its results only in the antardasa which
is suitable.
8. In the dasa of Papa Trikona lord, the antar of subha Kendra lord
would be auspicious and antar of papa Kendra lord would be little
auspicious (provided the Trikona lord is not eighth lord
simultaneously)
9. In the dasa of Subha Trikona lord, the antar of subha Kendra lord
would be auspicious and the antar of the papa Kendra lord can be
little auspicious, if it is associated with the Trikona lord. If there is no
association between them, then the antar would be predominantly
inauspicious.
14. During the dasa of a planet, the native is endowed with the nature
and complexion of the dasa lord. The fiery planets would give
brilliance, the watery planet would make one emotional and
compassionate, the earthy planets make one hard working and the air
planet would make the person thoughtful and philosophical. Along
with this, the native would partake the guna of the dasa lord. Thus
during the Jupiter, Sun and Moon’s dasa the native becomes sattvik,
during the dasa of Venus and Mercury, the native becomes Rajasik
and during the dasa of Mars and Saturn, the native becomes tamasik.
More effect of the guna of planets on the native can be learnt from
BPHS and Saravali.
15. The result of a planet going towards its exaltation increases as the
dasa progresses and similarly, the dasa of a planet diminishes with
progress of the dasa, if the dasa lord is going towards its debilitation
(one sign behind the sign of debilitation)
16. Malefics give their results of its placement in a rasi during the first
third part, the results of its placement in a bhava in the middle third
and the results of its aspect in the last third of the dasa. Similarly
Benefics give their results of their bhava in the beginning third, the
result of rasi in the middle third and the aspects in the last third of
the dasa.
17. When the dasa and the antar-dasa lords are placed in the 6th/ 8th
or 12th from each other, these shows enmity, physical troubles,
troubles from unknown sources etc. If the antar lord is a friend to the
dasa lord or the Lagna lord and well placed in the sign, then the
trouble would be lessened. On the contrary, if the dasa- antar lords
are badly placed and the antar lord is an enemy to the dasa lord and/
or the Lagna lord then the antar would be very troublesome.
18. During the dasa of a planet, the house where the antar lord is
placed the results of that house would be specifically felt. For
example, if someone is running the dasa- antar of Sun- Moon; and
Moon is placed in the 5th house from the dasa lord, them the 5th
house effect would be specifically experienced. The good or bad
results to be experienced related to that bhava would be based on
whether or not the dasa and antar lords are well placed.
19. If the dasa lord is capable of give both good and bad results (such
as a planet becoming an yogakaraka as well as maraca at the same
time) by the virtue of its placement and yoga, then the good results
would be felt during the antar of planets beneficially disposed and the
negative results would be felt during to the antar of negatively
disposed planets.
20. During the dasa of a planet, whichever house it transits from the
Lagna, the result of that particular house would be specifically felt
during such transit.
21. The results of the dasa are modified based on the transit of the
dasa lords in different signs. If the dasa lord goes to an enemy’s sign
or the sign of debilitation or the sign having lesser bindus (less than
4) in the dasa lord’s astakavarga, or the sign having lesser bindus in
the sarva-astakavarga and in addition having transiting a malefic
house (reckoned from Moon), then the effect would be extremely
negative if the dasa is of an evil planet or if it is of an auspicious
planet, then its auspiciousness would be greatly reduced.
22. On the contrary, if the dasa lord moves to its sign of exaltation/
mulatrikona/ own/ friend’s sign and / or in a sign with high
astakavarga in the dasa lord’s astakavarga, then the effect of the dasa
during that time would be extremely good, if the dasa is of an
auspicious planet or lesser troublesome, if the dasa is an evil dasa.
23. The effect of the dasa planet can be seen in different areas of life
from the Divisional charts related to that particular area of life. To
understand this, one needs to study the divisional charts and then
intelligently apply the dasa rules in those charts.
25. The dasa of the 2nd and 7th lord from a bhava becomes the
marakesh dasa for that bhava. If these planets are weak and afflicted
then it would surely cause trouble to the significations of the bhava
under consideration.
26. Similarly during the dasa of the 12th lord from a bhava, the native
suffers losses related the bhava under consideration
27. During the dasa of the 8th lord from a bhava, the relations ruled
by the concerned bhava suffers ill health, if the said planet is weakly
placed and/ or afflicted.
CHAPTER 25
KARTA: If any planet becomes the lord of/ placed with/ aspects the
Lagna, Hora Lagna or Ghatika Lagna, then he becomes karta. Karta
means the doer and thus, such planet can become the doer of
different actions in the native's life to bring material benefits to the
native related to the area implied by the associaton. If the association
is with the Lagna, then there is self development, if Hora Lagna, then
improvement in financial prospects and if the association is with the
Ghatika Lagna, then there is improvement in power, authority and
status of the native.
2. When benefics are placed in the fifth house the person is wise and
principled. He is inclined towards Japa or Meditation and is spiritual
and well behaved.
6. When the lord of the fourth house is in fifth, the native would be a
devotee of Vishnu (Jataka Parijata, JT, BPHS).
7. When the fifth lord is associated with Mercury, the native worships
Mahavishnu.
9. When the fifth lord is in Leo and aspected by Sun, then the native
will meditate upon Panchakshari mantra and attain blessings of Shiva
(Suka Nadi).
10. If Moon is in fifth house and fifth lord is with Mars, the native
worships Kartikeya.
11. If Jupiter is in fifth house and the fifth lord is in Virgo, the native
becomes a worshipper of mata Gouri.
12. When the fifth lord is placed in the seventh house, the native
becomes arva dharma samanvita and respects all religion.
13. When the eleventh lord is in fifth house, the native is religious.
14. When the twelfth lord is in fifth native visit shrines to get a child.
15. The deities governed by different planets are Sun- Shiva; Moon-
Gouri; Mars- Skanda; Mercury- Vishnu; Jupiter- Sadashiva,
Mahavishnu; Venus- Lakshmi; Saturn- Narayana; Rahu- Durga;
Ketu- Ganesha. If there are influences of these planets on the 5th
house or the fifth lord, then the native would be attracted towards
worship of the deity signified by different planets.

Lagna Bhava I: Lagna lord in different houses
Lagna represents the ideals of the native and his intelligence.
Wherever the Lagna lord is placed, the native’s ideals and intelligence
is focused on that area of life, represented by the concerned house.
These results will also apply to the Lord of the constellation and sign
occupied by the Lord of the ascendant. Matters concerning the mind
(e.g. intelligence, enemies, fortunes etc) shall be more evident from
the Lord of the Constellation whereas those concerning the physical
body shall be seen from the Lord of the sign.
1. Lagna lord in Lagna: If the Lagna Lord is in Lagna itself, the native
will be endowed with physical happiness (deha sukha) and prowess
(bhuja vikrami). He will be intelligent (manasvi), fickle-minded
(chanchala), will have two wives (dvibharya) and will unite with other
females (parago).
Lagna lord behaves like both Sun and the Moon and while the Lagna
lord placed in the Lagna, it carries the effect of the Sun and the Moon
on the Lagna. Thus it gives, intelligence and vitality as represented by
Sun, however also Moodiness and fickle mindedness as represented
by the Moon’s influence on the Lagna.
In addition, Moon influence on the Lagna also gives the urge to have
sex with multiple partners. Thus, for the significance of the multiple
sexual partners to be valid, Moon should also be strong and influence
the Lagna. This indication is strengthened if Mars is influenced by
Venus or Mercury is under the influence by Moon. Here, influence
means aspect, conjunction or placement in Trine.
Since Lagna also represents the body of the native, the intelligence of
the person is focused in maintaining the body and they are constantly
in effort to keep their body fit and beautiful. They spend a lord money
in procuring the materials which would make their body fit and
presentable.
For such natives, the intelligence and ideals are focused in the 2nd
house of family, wealth and food. This makes them always in pursuit
of accumulating more and more money and increasing their bank
balance. The like good food and can also make connoisseur of food or
good chef.
2nd house being the house of speech and also resided by goddess
Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom, when the Lagna
lord is placed in the 2nd house, he is blessed by Goddess Lakshmi.
This makes the person learned and wise. While seen in the context of
the 5th house, the house of knowledge, 2nd is placed in the 11th from
it. Hence, it shows gain of objective of knowledge or applying the
knowledge in real life, since 11th house rules gain of objectives.
Second house is also the house of family. The presence of the Lagna
lord in the 2nd house makes the native is committed towards the
family. The commitment can also be extended to the family outside
his immediate family, all the relations, and his community in whole.
The native shall constantly try to fulfil the requirement of his family
or the community. This also makes the native respectable in the eye of
the family and the community and honourable too.
Along with the 9th house, the 2nd house is also the house of Vishnu,
since 2nd house is the house of sustenance and Vishnu is the
sustainer. Vishnu gives the dharmic ideals to the person and takes
him on the path of dharma as mentioned in Srimad Bhagavat Gita.
Placement of the Lagna lord in the 2nd house thus makes the person
inclined towards dharma and dharmic activities. However for this
indication to fully manifest, the karaka for dharma, Sun should also
be well placed in the horoscope and preferably influence the houses of
dharma.
Second house is the 8th house from the 7th house and thus rules the
2nd marriage. When the lagna lord is placed in the 2nd house, the
native craves for relationship beyond the marital relationship. The
native is highly passionate and provided the planets which can give
passion (Venus- Mars or Mercury- Moon) are also under picture, the
native shall have relationships outside the social boundaries. This
also means that the native have multiple marriages with the break of
former marriage concludes into latter marriages. This indication
however comes true, only if the 8th house is afflicted (malefics in 8th
and/or 8th lord weak and afflicted).
Since Lagna lord also brings the influence of Moon on the 2nd house
while placed there, the natives sometimes find their wealth
fluctuating, since Moon shows fluctuations to the indications where it
is placed.
The symbol of Lion in the matter of courage shows that while the
natives of this combination are valorous, they are principled in the
matter of courage and will only show the courage at the time of need,
like a Lion. However, they are calm and composed at other times and
well behaved too. This is similar to the behaviour of Lion, when it is
not on its hunting spree. In addition, when the Lion has quenched its
hunger, it does not long for its hunt any more and generously leave
the remains for the lesser predators. This indicate that native with
this combination shall be generous while courageous and shall not
display their courage every now and then. This indication is stronger
if Lagna lord is a malefic and/or the 3rd house is aspected by malefics
and/or the karaka for valour Mars is well placed. The Karaka’s aspect
on the house enhances the significations of the house, related to that
Karaka. Thus while the Lagna lord is placed in the Lagna, Mars also
aspects or placed in the 3rd house, the native is extremely
courageous. How he displays his power in this world is a different
matter however, which needs to be seen from the 3rd or 6th from the
Arudha Lagna.
In the real life the quality of courage translates into risk taking
behaviour. Hence when the Lagna lord is placed in the 3rd house,
such people become high risk taker. Because they are not afraid of
anything, they more than often take initiative in whatever comes their
way. This makes them a natural leader and respected by their peers.
However, as mentioned before this, influence to be strong on the
native, the karaka Mars should be well placed and/ or influence the
3rd house.
The third house is also given the name of Upachaya, which represents
growth. When the Lagna lord is placed in the Upachaya, the native
like to gain from the environment surrounding them and they are in
the pursuit of procuring all the materials of comfort. The important
necessities of growth are Intelligence and effort. Among the four
upachayas, namely 3/6/10/11, the 3rd and 6th house shows the
intelligence required for the growth (from Lagna it is the growth of
self) while the 10th and the 11th shows the efforts. Thus, if the Lagna
lord is placed in the 3rd house or 6th house, the natives are intelligent
and also called Dhi-Mantah. To illustrate this, Maharishi says that the
natives with the Lagna lord placed in the 3rd house are Mati-maan
(Mati means intelligence and Maan means endowed with). Along with
this Maharishi used the term Sukhi or happiness. This is a continuous
endeavour of human to attain happiness in their life. Thus a person
having the mentioned combination would take any kind of risk to
attain the matters of comfort and having a happy life. The key thing
here to be noted is that the native would rarely dependent on others
to attain the comforts and shall use their intelligence instead.
Third house is also the house which governs the attitude towards
sexual relationships and the sexual morals. Many say that this is also
the house of Copulation. The placement of the Lagna lord in the 3rd
house also draws the native towards these indications and hence the
native becomes passionate. They crave to have sexual relationships
with many, however, whether this shall be predominant in the nature
of the native can only be seen from the combinations supporting or
opposing it. While the combinations Venus- Mars or Moon- Mercury
gives high sexual passion, Ketu helps in curbing the same. All the
influences needed to be taken before pronouncing the result. This is
why Maharishi says that the native with the Lagna lord in the 3rd
house have two wives.
CHAPTER 26
2. Lagna: The lagna is the key which chanalises the energies of the
natal horoscope to the Tithi pravesh chakra.
Thus, if the tithi pravesh lagna is placed in Kendra to Natal lagna, it
will bring happiness; in trikona it will bring prosperity and if placed
in dusthana or badhakasthana, it will bring troubles and ostabcles.
The lagna lord in the tithi pravesh chakra needs to be studied for
success or failure in different endeavours in the year.
3. Hora: The hora lord at the commencement of the tithi new year set
the focus of the events that are going to happen in that year. The
events can be seen from the ownership, placement and yogas the hora
lord is involved in the tithi pravesh chakra.
This is the most important factor of the three and the strengths,
placement or ownership and the yogas it is involved in will have
tremendous impact on the main events of the year. If it is badly
placed or afflicted, then the events can leave us with some bad
experiences.
The influence on the hora lord can be seen from the different
divisional charts to find the exact nature of events likely to take place
in different area of life represented by the divisional chart.
The principle of the Year lord, Lagna, Lagna lord and hora lord can be
applied to any other pravesh chakra such as masa pravesh chakra or
dina pravesh chakra.

Natural Years of Fructification of Yogas
It is normally observed that at many times, different yogas happening
in a horoscope doesnot manifest during the vimshottari dasa of the
planet. This is because, the dasa's require right environment to
manifest its effect. This is why, one must look at in which house the
yogas are happening, which would give the clue to when the
environment would be right for the dasa to manifest. In this regard,
Maharishi Jaimini suggests in the Jaimini Sutras that yogas forming
in the houses 2nd and 4th shall fructify early in life and that of 1st, 7th
and 9th shall fructify late. Though he has not mentioned about other
houses, we can extend this principle to others houses too. This
knowledge is from the tradition of SJC and given to me by my
honourable Guru.
Now the late fructifying houses are 1st and 9th and counting 7th from
them, we have 7th and 3rd. Thus yogas happening in the houses
1/3/7/9 shall fructify in the last part of life.
The remaining houses are 5th, 6th and 7th from it, where if any yoga
happen shall fructify in the middle part.
Early : 2/ 4/ 8/ 10
Middle: 5/ 6/ 11/ 12
Late : 1/ 7/ 9/ 3
1. Manduka Gati:
Manduka or frog is indicated by Rahu and the movement it shows is
in Jumps to the alternate houses. This particular movement is
applicable while arriving at the sequence of fructification of different
houses in a person's life. Now why are we interested in this manduka
gati, ruled by Rahu. This is because, this particular fructification shall
show the nature of the environment/ situations at different times that
you shall be placed in and the experiences that you shall be
undergoing in those environment. Now the question is why do we
have to go to certain experiences? This is because; we have to pay for
whatever we have done in the past births. If this is so, Rahu is the
planet who makes us take this birth and bind us in this bondage and
hence Rahu rules the root of this movement.
_______________________________________
Let's start the exercise now:
The first experience begins from the childhood and care of Mother.
This is ruled by the 4th house. 4th house is also the house of creation
as it is mother who can only create or give birth. So lets start with 4th
house.
4-
4-2-
Now while we jump the alternate house towards Lagna, we see that,
this is not possible as then we have to jump over the Lagna, which is
not allowed. So we got to Jump to the 7th from the sign which
happens to be the 8th house. Lets add 8th house to the sequence now:
4-2-8-
From 8th house, either we can jump to 6th or 10th. But 10th being
near the Lagna we got to Jump to the 10th house and now the
sequence becomes:
4-2-8-10
From 10th we got to Jump to 12th as that the only house left for
Jumping as 8th is already gone. Adding 12th to the sequence we have:
4-2-8-10-12-
4-2-8-10-12-6-
From 6th we can either Jump to 4th or 8th, however we can't as they
are already gone. Now, neither can we Jump alternate house nor the
7th house from 6th and we are stuck. What can we do now. Hmm.
The frog has to crawl now. It can either crawl to the previous sign 5th
or to the next sign 7th. 5th being closer to Lagna, it Jumps to 5th.
Adding 5th to the sequence we have:
4-2-8-10-12-6-5-
From 5th, the jump can happen to the 3rd or the 7th. Neither of this
can happen as then the Jump has to happen over 4th or 6th, both of
them are occupied and they would not let the frog Jump over their
houses. Now what does the frog do? It would Jump to the 7th from it,
i.e., to the 11th house. So the sequence becomes:
4-2-8-10-12-6-5-11-
From 11th, the Frog moves to the Lagna as that is the most logical
thing it can do. :-). The sequence is now:
4-2-8-10-12-6-5-11-1-
From Lagna the frog can either move to 12th or 3rd. This is not
possible as 12th is already taken and the 3rd is not allowed as 2nd
would not allow jumping over it as it is already taken. So the frog
moves to the 7th house. The sequence becomes:
4-2-8-10-12-6-5-11-1-7-
From 7th, the frog can either Jump to 9th or 5th. 5th is not allowed,
and 8th would not allow to Jump over it as it is already taken. It
cannot crawl too as 6th and 8th both taken. Hence now the frog has
to force to 9th house through 8th. What persuasion the frog did to the
8th house to let it though? I don't know this!. Whatever it is lets
added 9th to the sequence:
4-2-8-10-12-6-5-11-1-7-9-
Now only house left is 7th from 9th, i.e., 3rd. The frog happily jumps
on that to end it jumping sequence. Maharishi Jaimini suggests 3rd
also to be house of end being 8th from 8th house. I am not going to
explaining the significance of 3rd in ending the sequence now.
However, lets add 3rd to the sequence and end the Jumping exercise
session.
4-2-8-10-12-6-5-11-1-7-9-3
1. The natural purnaayu is 108 years in the rasi dasas such as Shoola
Dasa. Distributing this over 12 houses the aayu governed by each
house becomes 9 years. The Purnaayu is divided into three khandas,
(0-36) as alpaayu, (36-72) as Madhyaayu and (72-108) as Purnaayu.
Each Khanda is again divided into three kakshya each namely short,
middle or long. While computing the Longivity based on the three
pairs, we can determine the aayu of the native is in which Khanda and
which Kakshya.
2. If the Aayu of the native is in the Short "Kakshya", the age of the
signs would be movable -7, Fixed - 8, Dual - 9 as in Sthira Dasa. If the
aayu of the native falls in the Middle Kakshya, the age denoted by the
signs shall be 9 years each, as in Shoola Dasa. If the aayu of the native
falls in the Long Kakshya, the age denoted by the signs shall be 10
years, which adds up to be the longest most aayu in this kali yoga, i.e.,
120 years.
3. For all normal purpose, we can take the age denoted by a sign to be
9 years. Thus is a rajayoga happen in the 7th house it shall fructify
between 81 to 90 years of age.
4. There could be other rules which I am not aware yet. Probably Pt.
Rath can say something more on this.
Illustration:
To Illustrate this, lets take my own example:
Poddar, Sarajit
Natal Chart
Date: August 25, 1974
Time: 14:32:44
Time Zone: 5:30:00 (East of GMT)
Longitude: 85 E 17' 00"
Latitude: 23 N 40' 00"
This shows that the house is not so well placed. The trend of this
period can be found by dividing the period into three parts. Please
refer to the note on the same end of this mail. Pisces is an
Ubhayodaya sign and hence the result of the sign shall predominate
during the middle part of the dasa i.e., 3-6 years. The first part shall
be governed by the planet who is more benefic between lord and the
planets conjoining/ aspecting. Decidingly Jupiter stands out. Hence
Jupiter's effect shall be seen during the first 0-3 years and Saturn/
Gk/Md result would be seen during the last 1/3rd i.e., 6-9 years.
Between 6-9 years, my asthma started picking up and I got severely ill
day by day. Note that Saturn is placed in the 3rd from AL in a airy
sign, showed its effect while aspecting the 4th house. Gulika's and
Mandi's aspect also showed it color. The illness was very acute and
chronic.
This way you can find the years of happening of different events in
one's life.
Conclusion
From the analysis and illustration we can see that, the age when the
yogas would fructify in someones' life, whether good or bad is
dependent on the house where the yogas are happening. The natural
years of fructification of each house is as follows:
4 : 00- 09 years
2 : 09- 18 years
8 : 18- 27 years
10: 27- 36 years
12: 36- 45 years
6 : 45- 54 years
5 : 54- 63 years
11: 63- 72 years
1 : 72- 81 years
7 : 81- 90 years
9 : 90- 99 years
3 : 99- 108 years
Sirsodaya signs give results in the early part of the dasa, Pristodaya
signs give results during the last part of the dasa, whereas the
Ubhayodaya signs give results during the middle part of the dasa.
