TEMPERATURE, HEAT, AND EXPANSION
REVIEW OF CONCEPTS. Give what is asked in each item and answer it as concise yet well-explained as
possible.
1. What is the connection between temperature and kinetic energy?
- Temperature is related to the random motion of atoms and molecules in substance more specifically, temperature is
proportional to the average “translation” kinetic energy of molecular motion, motion that carries Molecule from one
place to another.
2. Why does 2 liters of boiling water not have twice as great a temperature as 1 liter of boiling water?
- It is because the average translational kinetic energy per molecule is the same in each.
4. In terms of differences in temperature between objects in thermal contact, in what direction does heat flow?
-Heat flows is from the higher temperature substance to the lower temperature substance and it is not necessarily flow
from a substance with more internal energy to a substance with less internal energy .
6. What does it mean to say that a material has a high or low specific heat capacity?
-If the material has a high value of specific heat capacity it means that it takes more energy (or lower) to raise its
temperature. A low value means that it does not take very much energy to heat or cool it.
8. In the old days, on a cold winter night it was common to bring a hot object to bed with you. Which would be better – a
10-kilogram iron brick or a 10-kilogram jug of hot water at the same temperature?
- A 10 kilogram jug of hot water is better, because water has a higher specific heat capacity. Water has more thermal
inertia and it takes a longer time to warm in the hot sunlight and a longer time to cool on a cold night.
