1. How do you know that you are a Filipino? Can you relate your answer to the topics of
Lesson 2?
I am a Filipino since I was born in the Philippines and both of my parents are
Filipino citizens. I am a hospitable, respectful, and God-fearing person with close family
ties. Another feature that distinguishes me as a Filipino is my flat and wide (pango) nose,
as well as my kayumanggi (brown) skin tone. All of these characteristics are typical of
Filipinos and are relevant to our lesson 2 topics.
Filipinos are well-known for their strong and close family ties. I love my family so
much that no matter what the other members of my family say, do, or feel, I still love
them for who they are. In a way, they are still my family and will always be, which is why
we must respect one another.
Another trait that Filipinos possess is that they are very hospitable. When there
are visitors at home, they will do a lot of preparations for good entertainment and
accommodation so that they will feel at home and enjoy the stay. This is especially true
in our home. We usually ask the guest “have you already eaten?” as a general greeting,
regardless of the time of day and location. We also tend to stress every time a visitor
comes to visit because we want to serve them and make them enjoy their visit.
Respect is one of the most valuable qualities that Filipinos possess. We express
our respect for seniors by saying "Po at Opo," "Pagmamano," or placing the back of an
elder's palm on your forehead and addressing our older siblings or elders as Ate or Kuya.
Another thing I do, which is a Filipino tendency, is use endearments such as "ate" for girls
and "kuya" for guys when we don't know their names.
The Filipinos are recognized for their strong religious beliefs. Even in the middle of
the most trying times in their history, their faith remains unwavering. Though Filipinos
come from many religious backgrounds, we all have God (the Supreme Being) at the core
of our lives. We go to church or pray together with our family.
