Hello 3M Families,

Happy November! A reminder to families this is a short three-day week for

students. There is no school on Thursday, November 11th and Friday, November
12th. Be sure to check out the important November dates on the blog section
(on the right-hand column). This is best viewed on a computer.

Language Arts:
In language arts we are focusing on our daily comprehension review, word sort
practice, a variety of writing, and reading of fiction and nonfiction
books. Students enjoyed a creative writing project, where they got to design
their own imaginary school and describe it in great detail! They then edited their
writing for capitals, punctuation and spelling, using their personal spelling
dictionaries. Ask your child what kind of school they designed.

Thank you for your ongoing support with home reading. Students are improving
their accuracy and improving their reading fluency, while reading with more
expression. There is also growth in their comprehension, checking for
understanding, retelling the story in their on words. They have been practicing
finding text evidence from fiction and nonfiction stories to support ideas,
opinions and thoughts.
We will be starting to learn cursive writing this month. We are beginning with the
lower case letters. Feel free to encourage practice of these letters at home.
Math:
In math we have wrapped up our place value unit and different ways
of representing numbers and moving onto number sense, which includes odd
and even numbers, skip counting, and number patterns. We will be learning
about pattern cores, attributes of colour, shape, and size. Students will
distinguish between increasing and decreasing patterns. We will practice these
patterns using symbols, as well as number patterns. For increasing number
patterns, we skip count forwards or add. For decreasing number patterns, we
skip count backwards or subtract. We will write pattern rules to describe various
patterns.
Students have been doing well reviewing and working towards mastery of their
math facts in our Math Facts Blaster Program. We have daily practice of our
math facts of the week, to help increase our math fact fluency! There is a quiz
every Friday on the fact of the week. They should be bringing home their flash
cards each week, on Mondays, to practice at home for the week as well.
November Math Fact Practice & Weekly Quiz:
(Nov 8 – 10) – 5 Facts Quiz – Nov. 10
(Nov 15 – 19) – 6 Facts Quiz – Nov. 19
(Nov 22 – 26) – 7 Facts Quiz – Nov. 26
(Nov 29 – Dec. 3) – 8 Facts Quiz – Dec. 3

Social Studies:
We finished our Science unit last month and we have switched back to Social
Studies for the month of November. In Grade 3 Social Studies, we will be learning
about four different countries this year - Peru, India, Ukraine, and Tunisia, while
developing an understanding and appreciation of other cultures and traditions,
and also developing their global citizenship skills at the same time! We are
learning about Peru first.
This month we will focus on Peru’s culture, as compared to our way of life here in
Canada. Topics include: landform regions (the coastal region, the Andes
Mountains, the Amazon Rainforest), climate, food, fashions, music and
transportation. They will explore the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu on our
virtual field trip and seeing various images of Peru through google maps.
Students will be completing brochures about Peru and writing postcards about
things they’ve learned about Peru at the end of the month. In December, we
will be switching back to science and our new science unit will be on Hearing
and Sound.
Some students wanted to go there after seeing the following video about Peru:

Field Trip:
The grade 3 students are so excited about our upcoming field trip on Thursday,
November 18th. It is sure to be a wonderful fun-filled learning experience for the
students. We have our required parent volunteers, thank you so much for taking
the time to share your day with us. Your children are proud that you are able to
come with them. I will be sure to take photos on our field trip and upload to our
class website, especially for those of you who are working.
Absences:
Please continue to email me if your child will be absent. This helps the office staff
account for all students as soon as possible. If your child is absent, they may
continue to practice their basic facts math flashcards, word sorts, and home
reading library books each week. For any extended absences please reach out
to me so I can inform you of the resources provided on our Google Classroom
and Class Weebly Website. This will provide your child with school work if they
are able to complete some practice work at home while they are absent. Your
child’s login information and class website are on stickers in the first page of their
agenda. Please email me and I can resend it if you need a replacement sticker.
Thank you!

Remembrance Day:
Riverstone School will be recognizing the sacrifices our veterans made for our
Freedom. We want to ensure the memory of their efforts and sacrifices will not
be forgotten, and that an appreciation of the values they fought for will live on
in all Canadians. There will be a virtual Remembrance Day Ceremony on
Thursday, November 10th for the students and staff at the school. Last week we
created poppies and beautiful paintings for Remembrance Day. We will be
spending more time next week reflecting further about the importance of
Remembrance Day.

Take Care,

Mrs. Mahoney
