The Legend of the Mahakam Porpoise (IKAN PESUT)

Once upon a time, there lived a father who lived in a small village located in Muara Muntai in
East Kalimantan. The father lives with his two children. While his wife had long died of
illness.
The father is a responsible person, every day he goes to the forest to look for firewood and
sells it to the market. Apart from working to earn a living, Father also has to cook for his two
young children.
The father also did everything himself, all the work in the house including cleaning the house
and clothes. Working for a living while doing housework, makes him tired.
The father then thought of getting married again, so that someone would help him take care
of the house and his children. the father then decided to remarry, to a very kind woman.
The stepmother initially loved the children very much, every day the stepmother cooked food
for the children. Father's children look very happy with the presence of their stepmother.
With a mother for the children, Dad looked for firewood further into the forest. Fathers are no
longer worried about their children. Sometimes he spends the night in the forest because he
has gone too far into the forest.
My father worked harder and harder to provide for his family. However, unbeknownst to him,
the wife treats the children badly. Even the stepmother made the children do the adult's
work.
"Hey, you lazy kids. All you do is eat and sleep, quickly fetch water from the river," said the
stepmother to the children.
The children, full of fear, took water from the river. But a lot of water was spilled, because
they were still small. So it's not strong enough to carry water. Arriving at home, his
stepmother was very angry, because the water brought very little.
"Oops, why did you only bring a little water," said the stepmother. "Sorry ma'am, we can't lift
the water. So a lot of it spilled," answered the children. His stepmother replied, "You lazy
people, don't make many excuses."
The angry stepmother suddenly hit them. The stepmother's cruelty to the children continued.
One day, the stepmother sent the children to look for firewood into the forest.
The children, who were afraid of their stepmother, went straight into the forest. They began
to collect the dry branches they found. The children went into the forest farther and farther
from the house.
The atmosphere became dim, because of the dense forest that made the sunlight blocked
by tall tree leaves. In the middle of the journey the children began to starve, since morning
they have not eaten anything.
The children who were tired and hungry, finally found a small river. They found a lot of
bananas around the river, they immediately ate the fruit voraciously.
It didn't feel like it was getting dark, even though they got very little wood. Because they
were afraid of their stepmother, they ended up sleeping in the middle of the forest.
After morning came, they continued to look for firewood. After collecting a lot of firewood,
they went home. Children walk carrying firewood which is very heavy from their small size.
The children arrived home very exhausted. "Ma'am, we have brought a lot of firewood, now
we are very hungry ma'am. Please feed us," said the children. However, there was no
answer from their stepmother. It seems, the stepmother is not at home.
Brothers and sisters, went into the kitchen and found no one there. After waiting for their
stepmother who did not come, the children immediately ate hot sticky rice from the cauldron.
Because they were very hungry, they did not feel the heat of the freshly cooked glutinous
rice. Finally one pot of sticky rice, they finished. His father and stepmother suddenly came,
they were surprised to see the children eating all the sticky rice until there was nothing left
"See brother, the children are playing until they don't come home and suddenly they come to
finish our food," said the stepmother.
Hearing his wife's words, Dad believed it and immediately scolded his children.
"You guys are naughty kids, you haven't been home for days and now you're just coming
home to finish food," said the father.
The father, who had always believed his wife's words, continued to scold his children.
"You guys are people who don't know themselves, eat very greedily. Are you children of
humans or children of fish?," said the father once again.
When the father scolded his son by mentioning the name of the fish, lightning began to
strike. After hearing the sound of lightning, the children suddenly felt hot. His father and wife
were also very surprised "Ouch, it's so hot," said the children. Gradually the children's bodies
turned black. The children were hot and their bodies blackened, immediately ran towards the
river and entered it.
Not long after, the children's bodies turned into fish. The father could only cry, watching his
children turn into fish. The children who turned into fish, looked sadly at their father.
As if saying goodbye. The two black fish then swam into the middle of the Mahakam river
and were not seen again. The two small children became fish that inhabit the Mahakam
river..
