REFLECTION PAPER FOR MOVIE ‘PADMAN’

This movie illustrates the fact that "not all heroes wear capes." As shown in Akshay
Kumar's film Padman, the tale of Lakshmikant Chauhan who is a rural Indian man that
determined to make life simpler for women, especially his wife, is based on a real story about
Arunachalam Muruganantham. He invented a mass-producing of cheap and affordable sanitary
pads in rural areas across India. Through this invention, he also able to give jobs opportunities to
thousands of women. He discovered that his wife, and by extension, many rural women in India,
were unable to purchase sanitary pads due to their extremely high cost and it forced them to
depend on unsafe and unhygienic choices such as a dirty rag, leaves and even ashes.

This movie showed that it is not easy to make changes in society especially when it
comes to something that was previously a taboo. By hook by crook, it must pass a societal test
which often involves the most unreasonable method towards evolution. In this movie, they
highlight about the social taboo of menstruation in India which is the start for his entrepreneurial
journey.

While watching Padman, we were struck by the image of a courageous individual

determined to make positive change in society, even if it means going against the grain. Even
though he was facing many challenges, including the pressure from his wife and family, he
persisted in carrying out his responsibilities. He doesn't give up because he has a strong vision of
the positive impact that he wants to have on the world around him. Someone who wants to be an
innovator must have this mindset in order to create major changes, or else he will give up
halfway through the process.

Every new innovation must undergo an experiment in the context of entrepreneurship in

order to learn about the product's strengths and weaknesses and to determine whether they meet
up to expectations. Additionally, conducting experiments will help entrepreneurs in gaining new
ideas for improving their products. This is shown in the film when Padman convinces his wife to
test his first trial sanitary pad and discovers that the sanitary pad is lacking in absorption after
many trials. A fake uterus made by a football bladder loaded with animal blood was used by
Padman when he went throughout his daily routine while wearing the sanitary pad in order to see
how it worked and to improve the product.

In order to be an innovator, one must do research before coming up with new ideas and
inventions. It is necessary for the inventor to get out and gather actual knowledge rather than just
sitting at a computer searching for databases in order to better understand the product. Visiting
the sanitary pad manufacturer and studying their product was how Padman showed how to do
research. He learned that they are using different material in order to have a good absorption and
prevent leaking. He also did some digging on Google, spoke to suppliers, and consulted a
professor at the university. After all of his research, he discovered that his product is
fundamentally flawed. Instead of raw cotton, he began using cellulose fiber that he imported
from outside.

In order to assist consumers in solving their problems, the innovator must first understand
their issues. It was Padman's discovery that rural Indian women have struggled with the taboo of
menstruation because of their feelings of shame and embarrassment about discussing their
menstrual cycles openly, or exploring safer practices and goods choices. Despite the fact that
there are sanitary pad factories in that region, the prices were unaffordable for the locals.

When someone comes up with new ideas and inventions, it may be difficult to gain
support from family and society, particularly when the topic is 'impossible' or 'sensitive'. The
inventor should look for help from a group of people that have the same entrepreneurial mindset
as them so that they may share their experiences and help one another with a "pay-it-forward"
mentality. Padman visited many entrepreneurs for help in obtaining the materials and equipment
necessary to manufacture sanitary pads. They are very encouraging and compliment him on his
efforts. It's simpler for him to get help from them since they have the same entrepreneurial
mindset. With the assistance of a well-educated and sophisticated young lady, Pari Walia,
portrayed by Sonam Kapoor, Padman learned that even though his innovation is already
functional, it would be impossible to get acceptance without a proper approach.

In conclusion, Padman not only teaches us about life lessons, but it also displays a
number of entrepreneurial skills and mentalities that we can use to our own businesses. Padman
proved to us that making changes is not impossible if you put your heart and soul into it and keep
doing it with passion, no matter how difficult the challenges may seem to be. Padman was faced
a lot of insults, humiliation, and fury from everyone, even his own wife and mother. He persisted

until his ideas were recognized all across the world. Padman's perseverance and persistence
express his entrepreneurial values to the fullest.
