OBJECTIVES / ADVANCED 2
Unit 1 - Telling The Truth
This unit deals with the topic of truth and lies. Learners will watch a
video clip of a stressed man and a female friend. They will listen to
and take part in a dialogue in which a woman asks her friend’s opinion
about a dress she wants to buy, and will read a letter from a woman
who admits she’s been depressed since her boyfriend left her. The
grammar section deals with logical connectors of cause and effect,
and of contrast. The vocabulary section provides learners with expo-
sure to and practice of words and phrases on the topic of emotional
problems.

3. I lost my job a few months ago, and since then I have been fee-
ling so depressed. I also feel ashamed and sometimes I don’t even
want to leave the house. I need to find a solution and get out of this
horrible state.
4. I feel like I am stuck in my job. I am not happy and have been wan-
ting to leave for a long time. My boss is horrible and treats me very
badly. Furthermore, I feel like this is the wrong career for me, and I
would like to change. I just don’t know where to start. To be honest,
I am so down in the dumps at the moment.

Unit 1 / Telling The Truth
3. Reading
a. It sounds like you are under a lot of stress. Trying to figure out a
new career or professional path can be tricky. The first thing you
need to do is decide what you really want and then you can start to
see how to get there. How about speaking to someone you admi-
re who is doing a job they love, like a friend or colleague? I hope
things work out.
b. It’s normal to feel sorry for yourself at a time like this, so don’t be
too hard on yourself. Try to take the time to make yourself feel be-
tter. Surround yourself with sympathetic people you love, and seek
professional advice if necessary. In the mean time, keep your chin
up and keep checking the job ads.
c. I am sorry to read about your situation. I think the first thing you
need to do is try talking to him to find out what is going on. He mi-
ght even be trying to cope with his own depression, so it might not
have anything to do with you or your relationship. However, if that
is not the case, and if he is seeing someone else, then maybe it is
time for you to move on. Be strong and take care of yourself.
d. Yes, lots of people find it hard to seek help when they are facing
problems. Have you tried talking to your friend to see if there’s
anything you can help him with? Maybe you could casually leave
some information about a local counselor on his desk and hope
that he will contact them.

3. Reading
Read Janet’s letter and write T (true) or F (false) for the statements below.
It was really great to see you last weekend. I wish we had had
more time to talk.
One of the things I wanted to tell you about was the problems I’ve
been having at work lately. Do you remember my old boss left at
the end of last year? Well I just haven’t been able to get along
with the new one. He is very aggressive, and doesn’t let anything
stand in his way, not even the truth. It is so difficult to work with
someone like that. As you know, I am ambitious and want to do
well in my job. But I am a respectful person and would rather
work with people who respect me in return. If I stay at the same
company, I’m sure I will continue to excel, and will hopefully even
make account executive in the near future. I can handle the cha-
llenge, but what I cannot deal with is working with someone who
is so dishonest and clearly only in it for the money. I’m not sure
how much longer I can take this, and might have to resign and
look for a new job soon.
