/7
Unit 1 / Telling The Truth

3. Reading

a. It sounds like you are under a lot of stress. Trying to figure out a
new career or professional path can be tricky. The first thing you
need to do is decide what you really want and then you can start to
see how to get there. How about speaking to someone you admi-
re who is doing a job they love, like a friend or colleague? I hope
things work out.

b. It’s normal to feel sorry for yourself at a time like this, so don’t be
too hard on yourself. Try to take the time to make yourself feel be-
tter. Surround yourself with sympathetic people you love, and seek
professional advice if necessary. In the mean time, keep your chin
up and keep checking the job ads.

c. I am sorry to read about your situation. I think the first thing you
need to do is try talking to him to find out what is going on. He mi-
ght even be trying to cope with his own depression, so it might not
have anything to do with you or your relationship. However, if that
is not the case, and if he is seeing someone else, then maybe it is
time for you to move on. Be strong and take care of yourself.

d. Yes, lots of people find it hard to seek help when they are facing
problems. Have you tried talking to your friend to see if there’s
anything you can help him with? Maybe you could casually leave
some information about a local counselor on his desk and hope
that he will contact them.

3. Reading

Read Janet’s letter and write T (true) or F (false) for the statements below.

Dear mom and dad,

It was really great to see you last weekend. I wish we had had
more time to talk.

One of the things I wanted to tell you about was the problems I’ve
been having at work lately. Do you remember my old boss left at
the end of last year? Well I just haven’t been able to get along
with the new one. He is very aggressive, and doesn’t let anything
stand in his way, not even the truth. It is so difficult to work with
someone like that. As you know, I am ambitious and want to do
well in my job. But I am a respectful person and would rather
work with people who respect me in return. If I stay at the same
company, I’m sure I will continue to excel, and will hopefully even
make account executive in the near future. I can handle the cha-
llenge, but what I cannot deal with is working with someone who
is so dishonest and clearly only in it for the money. I’m not sure
how much longer I can take this, and might have to resign and
look for a new job soon.

Let’s chat more about this next time we meet.

Janet

1. Janet is very happy at work. ____

2. Janet does not get on well with her new boss. ____

3. The new boss is a pleasant and honest person. ____

4. Janet is ambitious. ____

5. She is thinking of resigning and looking for a new job. ____
