OBSERVATION REPORT

Name of School Observed: New Era University

Location of the School: No. 9 Central Avenue, New Era, Diliman, Quezon City
Date of Visit: 23 September 2021

The things that I have observed is that there are a lot of innovations and renovations happened
after the year I graduated at the university. The INC library, Central Recreation and Fitness Center, School
for Management Building, the Embrace Café NEU Branch (wherein before is just a small stall beside our
building), etc. The facilities and of the school are complete ever since but they have improved every structure
as well. Before, we used the UP-Gymnasium Pool for our swimming class, but now, we have our own.

I have seen that ever since I entered my previous school, I haven’t seen any electrical wires
outside the buildings. As well as the streetlights have no wires. I learned that the main building and the
International schools building has underground cabling, and the other building uses solar panels. The school
also have generators in each building. Therefore, when there is an electricity shortage, classes aren’t
interrupted.

Regarding with the student transportation, they have added up school busses and services from
Central and dormitories up to the campus. The school management maximize the land allocated for the
school. They also have built additional dormitories for stay-in students or the students who are studying at
the School for Ministers. They also have canteens inside the dormitory, and it is placed near the convenient
stores.

An Observation Guide for the Classroom Visit

Be guided by these tasks as you do your observation. Then accomplish the matrix to record your data.

1. Look at the walls of the classroom. What are posted on the walls? What heroes, religious figures,
visual aids, announcements, do you see posted?
2. Examine how the furniture is arranged. Where is the teacher’s table located? How are the tables
and chairs / desks arranged?
3. What learning materials / equipment’s are present?
4. Observe the students. How many are occupying one room?
5. Is the room well- ventilated?

OBSERVATION REPORT

Name of School Observed: New Era University

Location of the School: No. 9 Central Avenue, New Era, Diliman, Quezon City
Date of Visit: 23 September 2021

The facilities inside the classrooms of New Era University are minimal yet most used. Each
classroom has chalk board and a whiteboard. They can write anywhere they are comfortable and depends
on the resources they have. Each board has their own erasers that is compatible for their use. If the teacher
or professor forget to bring chalks or markers, we can ask the Vice Principal’s Office to have some chalks
and markers because they have stocks for the teachers.

The teacher table has its own slot in front of the classroom at placed at the center of the stage.
Beside the table is the podium stands where the teacher stands during reporting, discussions, presentation,
etc. Between the chalk board and whiteboard, at the upper part of it, placed the tv that students used during
presentations. Beside the board, placed the framed mission and vision, goals, and objectives.

Parallel with the boards, attached was a bulletin board to be designed by the students. It is where
announcements, achievers, class officers, schedules, etc. was placed and could be viewed. At the center of
the classroom, the armchairs are placed. It is divided into two section to have a center aisle. The room was
well-lighted, and well-ventilated.

The classroom has no bookshelves because each building has library already. They also have no
shoe racks because students are not removing their shoes when entering the classroom premise. But upon
having no bookshelves and shoe rack, there are lockers outside the classrooms. It is allocated for all
students. Students can put their things in there to lessen their load when going home. I have observed that
every facility in the classroom is useful and functional during the face-to-face era.

Analysis

How do the school and the classroom in particular impact on the learning of the
students going to school? What are your conclusions?

It seems to me that the school and the classroom have played a very important role for
each student. In learning, some students learn when they actually see what the teacher do and tell. Some
students learn when they actually experience what the teacher have taught. These skills are only assessed
when the teacher and the student have physical interaction through face-to-face classes. Now, during the
online classes, there some factors that have negative effects for the students. First, physical factor. They
are no longer walk or run through the corridor to catch up their subject. The student’s body clock was
ruined because of their irregular habits. They only woke up when it’s their class hours, some stay late up at
night, some have no exercise, and some skip meals. Second, metal factor. There are students who are
mentally tired and sick with this set up. They couldn’t digest the information in one synchronous class, etc.
Third, emotional factor. Now that the home is the place where we do everything such as resting and
studying, there were no place for the student clears his/her mind except on its own house. Unlike when
they are going to school, if they are tired of what have had happened to school, there have time to clear
their mind on their way home. Fourth and last, social factor. Today’s generation has the most toxic social
life because everything that happened on their life was posted to the social media. It is not bad to share but
sometimes, even the smallest, or the most important life details were exposed.

I therefore conclude that home is the place where we all rest, and school is the place
where we should assess learning. In Filipino, there are saying that “Ang paaralan ang ikalawang tahanan
ng mga estudyante.” Therefore, home was not the suitable place for studying all stuffs. Students and
teacher should have one place for sharing knowledge, assessment of learning, assessment for learning,
etc.

Reflection

1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why?
Why not?
• Yes, I would like to teach in my previous school. When I was a child, it is
my dream school. I have studied there before and experienced their
services. They have set of professors that are competitive and focused on
student’s learning and competitiveness. The salary is competitive as well.

2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?

• From my standpoint, the most conducive school campus to learning is the
one that has complete facilities because students can experience and
explore the things that they are being studied. Accurate places for different
type of activities.

3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?

• The most favorable classroom set up for me is a classroom that has open
communication. The students will not be afraid of shy to ask for help.
Students and teachers show respect and love with each other. The
physical feature of a classroom should be well-lighted and ventilated,
clean, and occupiable.

4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?

• I could make it through the help of my future students. A healthy
communication with them will help me to build them as well as their
confidence. I could also help my students to grow when they aren’t afraid
of me yet still respect me and my profession as their teacher.

5. Write your additional learning’s and insights here:

• What I have learned upon revisiting my previous school is that an excellent
environment helps the student to think widely and outside their boxes.
• Green places or areas inside the campus such as gardens or place with
trees and plants releases the negativity of the students. It helps them to
refresh their minds.
• Complete and functional facilities help students to explore and learn.
• Teachers really are the support of their students towards success. They
might be billionaires, but they create one.

MY PERSONAL ILLUSTRATION OF AN EFFECTIVE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

My personal definition of an effective school environment is one that is structurally

sound, clean on the interior and exterior, and devoid of outside noise, allowing children to feel calm and
focused. A school environment that helps the students to concentrate on their studies without any
obstruction and distraction. An environment that is free for expression and away from judgement and
bullying. The school itself should be in good terms, the structure was not only strong by image, but has
strong foundation. The administration should also look students to be a competitive outcome, and not only
look for the school as a business.

On the classroom part, I see that an occupiable classroom with a clean surrounding
and functional facilities will help and benefit students on learning. Fixed armchairs, chalkboard and/or
whiteboards, proper ventilations and lightings, and minimal wall decors for the students to focus on the
class and not on the wall. A functional and updated class bulletin board should be placed in the room for
announcements and recognitions. There should also have lockers for students’ stuffs.

For the student and teacher relationship, for me the most effective is the healthy
communication of the student-teacher. It is effective to both students and teachers for them to know what is
going on. The teacher will know what approach he/she will give to a particular student once the student tells
him/her their situation. The students will also be open to their teacher once they have had built good
communication and bond. Despite of the openness and closeness between the students and teachers, the
boundaries shouldn’t be crossed inside and outside the school premises.
