Attack, attack, attack

 Save to My Activities
If your team is losing a vital match, you may decide to use three strikers. This session will
help your players develop some useful attacking combinations.
What this session is about
1. Attacking combinations.
2. Creating space.
What to think about
Players need to take the attack to the opposition using:
 Combination play – crossover runs, overlaps, one-twos.
 Positive, accurate passing.
 Movement to create space.
 Support for the player in possession.
 Communication.
 Accurate shooting.

What you get your players to do
You will need two teams, each with three outfield players and a keeper. Set up the area with a
goal at each end, as shown in the top picture.
Team B is positioned off the pitch, at one end. Team A starts in the six-yard area at the
opposite end, receives a ball from goalkeeper X, and all three players combine to progress up
the pitch unopposed and finish with a shot at keeper Y’s goal. Team A then waits behind Y’s
goal.
Y then rolls a ball out for team B to repeat in the opposite direction. Once team B has had a
shot, Y rolls a ball out for team A to repeat the drill and so on.
Attackers work their way up the pitch unopposed to shoot at goal. The second team waits to
take its turn.

Development
Use the same area but now play a 3v1. This time one defender (D1) starts on the halfway line
and passes the ball to keeper X, who begins the three-player team’s attack.
The lone defender runs into the half he is facing and tries to win the ball and knock it out of
play.
All attackers must touch the ball at least once in this half of the pitch. To move into the other
half, the final pass must be from inside the half where the attack began. The defender cannot
retreat past the halfway line.
All attacking players must be over the halfway line before a shot at goal is taken – but not
within either keeper’s six-yard area.
As the attackers cross the halfway line, a second defender (D2) joins the first defender on the
halfway line – ready for the next attack.
Once the ball is “dead” (i.e. shot is taken, ball is saved or gone off pitch), the drill is repeated.
It starts from the opposite end of the pitch, although this time it is a 3v2 and defenders can
only challenge attackers in the half they begin the attack.

A defender tries to intercept three attackers in one half of the pitch. A second defender joins
the next attack from the other direction.

Game situation
Play a five-a-side game. Use normal rules but after a few minutes, remove a player to create
an overload. Return to even-sided teams for a couple of minutes, then create an overload for
the other team.
Encourage players to pass and move and stretch the opposition.
The team that scores most goals wins.
Remove a player in a small-sided game to create overload scenarios.
