1 Introduction
BPM downhole motor (PDM) is a kind of downhole motor used in
drilling, especially for directional and horizontal operation. And it could be
matched to cone bits, PDC bits and those of other purposes.
Since the 1980s, BPM (Beijing Petroleum Machinery Co.) has
successfully taken in the developed technology of Dyna Drill PDMs
including D500, D1000 and F2000 series. And through the three
decades of researching and developing, BPM downhole motor has not
only built up good reputation among domestic oilfields, but also gained
the acceptance of many oversea customers, especially North America.
BPM provides downhole motors and their components of high
quality, which is ensured by the efficient working of ISO9001. And if
possible, we would like to improve on our products in accordance with
what you suggest, and to provide you articles of special types, technical
parameters, or structures according to your requirements.

3 Structure and principle

BPM downhole motor is a kind of Positive Displacement Motor,
using drilling mud or compressed gas as its power fluid. Drilling mud or
compressed gas is pumped out from the surface pump or compressor,
down through the drillstring, then into the clearance between the rotor
and stator of the power section, forcing the rotor to rotate, simultaneously
driving the bit via the connecting rod and drive shaft connected between
them. While drilling mud or compressed gas is forced to flow through the
motor continuously, a pressure drop will occur across the power section,
and it is a very useful parameter on rig floor.
BPM motors generally comprise the following configuration:
1) Dump valve (it can be substituted by Blank sub for air or foam
motor )
2) Power section (rotor and stator)
-2-

3) Connecting rod assembly (connecting rod and housing)

4) Driveshaft assembly (drive shaft, bearing assembly and outside
housing without stabilizer)
5) Connection of top and bottom are both API REG box threads.
Optional components are also supplied on request.
1) UBHO (Universal Bottom Hole Orientation) sub (can match every
kind of surveying instruments)
2) Bent sub (connected on top or on bottom of the dump valve on your
specification)
3) Special motor (hollowed, extended, air and/or foam; resistant to
special mediums, or of exceptional parameters)
4) Fixed bent housing 0-3º(in place of connecting rod housing )

5) Surface-adjustable bent housing (functions as 4) and available not

for all)
6) Stabilizer outside bearing assembly (symmetrical or dissymmetrical
straight blade, spiral blade, etc)
7) Replaceable stabilizer (functions as 6 and available not for all)
8) Exceptional top and bottom threads.
3.1 Dump valve
The dump valve consists of a piston, a sleeve, a spring and some
ports, etc. and the piston has two positions: open position and close
position, the adoption of which is determined by circulation.
When tripping in, with the pump turned off or circulation reduced, the
spring will push the piston up to the upper position, keeping the ports
open, thus both to prevent wet trips by allowing the drillpipe to drain
when tripping out, and to keep the differential pressure between outside
and inside of the drillpipe lower by allowing the pipe to fill with drilling
fluid when tripping into the hole.

-3-
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

While drilling on, with circulation rate higher than the minimum
specification, the piston will be held on the close position, keeping the
ports closed. Drilling fluid is then directed through the motor section
converting hydraulic power into mechanical energy.

3.2 Motor (power) section

The motor assembly consists of two components: rotor and stator.
Rotor is a long solid alloy steel bar shaped into what could be called a
spiral-helix. After machining to shape, the rotor is plated with
Gland
a special hard chrome to reduce frication and abrasion while
Nozzle
rotating. And stator is a length of tubular steel lined with a Base

molded-in-place, rubber compound. The elastomers are

specially formulated to resist abrasion and deterioration due
to hydrocarbons. A unique manufacturing process produces
a cavity in the stator in the shape of a spiral (similar to, but
not identical to the rotor).
When assembled, these two components form a
continuous seal along their matching contact points. As
drilling fluid is pumped into these cavities, flowing through the drive, it
forces against the rotor causing the rotor to turn and the cavities to move
forward in the direction of fluid flow, and then the hydraulic energy is
converted in mechanical energy.
The numbers of lobes of rotor and stator mounted in any couple of

-4-
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

downhole motor are always and necessarily different to each other. The
stator has one more than the rotor. The 1 to 2 lobe configuration drives
feature high in speed and low in torque, while the multi-lobe configuration
drives feature low in speed and high in torque.
In order to satisfy some occasions, on which high flow rate is
needed, the rotor is manufactured in a hollowed configuration, and a
nozzle is mounted to the rotor under these conditions. Thus, though the
flow rate is increased without a corresponding increase of the speed, the
motor performance is softened, that means speed of the bit will decrease
visibly with the weight on bit (WOB) increasing. So, you should pay
enough attention on this condition when operating.
Motors of special lengths are supplied to meet special applications.
For example, extended motors feature much higher in torque and power,
which endows them with an exceptional adaptation in high-speed drilling
in straight intervals of a hole; and on the other hand, shortened motors
have an advantage in those intervals of high build angle rate.
3.3 Connecting rod assembly
Connecting rod assembly consists of two universal joints,
with the upper one connected to the rotor and the lower one
connected to the drive shaft. And it is because of the two
universal joints that the eccentric rotation of the rotor is
converted into the centric rotation of the drive shaft.
3.4 Driveshaft assembly
The driveshaft assembly mainly consists of a drive shaft
rotating in a set of bearing assembly. The drive shaft
transmits the rotation of the rotor to the bit generally connected directly to
the drive shaft. The bearing assembly carries the axial thrust loads
created by the WOB, and the radial load or bending load developed by
the uneven cutting action of the bit periphery while directionally drilling. It
-5-
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

also carries the “off bottom” hydraulic thrust loads caused by

the pressure drop across the drive rotor and the drill bit, as
well as the load caused by back reaming.
BPM provides PDMs with drilling fluid-lubricated drive
assemblies, as well as those of oil-sealed configurations.
For conventional PDMs, the bearing assembly consists of
two sets of tungsten carbide radial bearings (TC radial
bearings), and between them a set of thrust ball bearings that
own good capacity.
Oil-sealed bearing assembly possesses the similar
configuration as above, with some inside configuration
optimized and the bearings oil-sealed, which increases load
capacity and the running time without failure between two trips,
making the motor more suitable for uninterrupted drilling in long straight
intervals.
4 Steerable motor system
Steerable motor is especially designed and manufactured for
high-angle and horizontal drilling. It generally represents the motors
mounted with various types of bent housing and stabilizer.
Steerable motors can match cone bits or diamond bits, as well as
bent subs, non magnetic drill collars, stabilizers and measurement
systems and so on, to form various BHAs used in the deflecting,
maintaining angle, horizontal drilling of high-angle holes.
4.1 Style of bend
Styles of bend, which we provide, are as the following:
Single bend (bent sub) ----at upside of the motor, there is a bent sub
provided by BPM or the user itself, which can be fitted on top or between
the dump valve and the stator.
Single bend (bent housing) ----the housing outside the connecting
-6-
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

rod is a single-bent one, the bend point of which can be set at the upside
or underside of the housing by request. For the same angle, the bend
point at underside is characterized as smaller offset and higher build
angle rate. The bend point is generally set at upside.
Double bends in same direction (DBS) ----the housing outside the
connecting rod has two coplanar bends in the same direction.
Double bends in opposite direction (DTU)----the housing outside the
connecting rod has two coplanar bends in a couple of directions opposite
to each other, with the deflexion of the lower bend generally doubling
that of the upper one, which endows the bit with smaller offset and larger
deflexion, resulting in higher build angle rate.
Great offset-double bends----both a bent sub and a single-bent
housing are fitted, the coplanar bends of which are in the same
inclination.
For any type of bent sub or bent housing, at the bend point, there
are a sign of the angle degree contained in a groove and a reticle cut out
to show the direction of the bend angle.

4.2 Adjustable bent housing

Adjustable bent housing (single-bent) is also supplied for some
types of motor, making it possible for the user to adjust the bend angle
flexibly on rig site.
The bend angle ranges from 0 ~ 3°, and there are reticle cuts on

the outer surface of the housing showing the degree and the direction of

the angle.

outside the housing containing the bearings, which is a visible difference
from the normal motors.
Here are the stabilizers generally supplied:

Because configuration and
outside size of the stabilizer are
influential to the effect in

advised to think much of the
case.
4.4 Replaceable stabilizer
Replaceable stabilizers are
available for some models of motor,
and their replacement can be carried
out on rig site at any moment.
5 Operations
5.1 Conditions and parameters
For the performance of a downhole motor is closely relevant to such
factors as choosing of the type, field conditions and operating level of the
operators, it is necessary to make the following items aware.
5.1.1 Drilling fluid
BPM downhole motors are designed to operate mainly with water-
and oil-based drilling fluids in drilling practices and workover treatments.
To gain a larger “maximum running time before failure” (MTBF), the
drilling fluid in use should be depurated to a solid content as low as
possible. Generally speaking, mud density of not higher than 1.25 and
sand content of not higher than 0.5% are recommended. Much higher
-9-
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

contents of solids or aromatic hydrocarbons can do much harm to your

operations by decreasing the running time of the motors.
The best PH range of drilling fluids is 8~10.5, and too lower PHs can
damage some parts of the motors, leading to a shortened service life of
them.
5.1.2 Temperature
The stator of downhole motor is composed of a steel housing and a
rubber liner. As we all known, rubber is sensitive to temperature, so
temperature should gain enough recognition in choosing of downhole
motors.
BPM can provide two kinds of Downhole motors(normal and high
temperature) to satisfy various operating temperatures. The difference
between them includes not only those of the directions of rubber, but
also their different motor interference. The normal kind is fit for operating
under normal temperature, much higher temperature can cause
excessive swell of rubber liner of stator, increasing interference of motor,
then wear of motor will be accelerated, which can cause premature
failure of downhole motor. The high temperature motor is the very
reverse, Its motor interference is fit for operating under higher
temperature. Much lower temperature can cause excessive contract of
the rubber liner, reducing the motor wring, resulting in poor performance
of downhole motor.

Sketch of temperature effect

In a word, the normal temperature motor is not fit for operating under
excessive high temperature, and the high temperature motor is not fit for
operating under relatively low temperature, either. So, it is better to
- 10 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

clarify the downhole temperature about to meet before deciding what

kind of downhole to be adopted.
For BPM normal motors, any operating temperature level higher
than 120℃ is prohibited. If it can not be avoided to run a motor under a
downhole temperature higher than 120℃, contact us, please, BPM can
provide high-powered downhole motors adapt to operating in deep and
hot wells.
5.1.3 Circulating rate
For PDMs, the rotating speed of the bit is proportional to the flow
rate across the motor section. Much higher flow rate can result in higher
speed, reducing life of the motor; while at a much lower flow rate, speed
of the bit will be greatly reduced, resulting in an insufficient power.
Further more, the dump valve will be closed as soon as the flow rate is
reduced lower than 85% of the lower limit recommended, with rotation of
the motor stopped. Therefore, it is important to restrict circulating rate
within a certain scope.
For some cases, where extraordinarily large circulating rate may be
required, hollowed motors can be adopted to enhance circulation, with
an additional flow discharged through the hollowed passage across the
rotor. In these cases, the motor flow must accord with the requirements,
and must fit with the nozzle. If the circulating rate is too small, the output
torque will be low.
You can adjust the parameters of mud pump (such as the diameter,
stroke rate etc) according to circulating rate and drilling requirements.
5.1.4 Motor differential pressure
For PDMs, the output torque is proportional to the pressure drop
across the motor section.
The necessary output torque can be generated only if there is
sufficient pressure drop across the motor section. In the cases where the
pump pressure being too low or the circulation resistance too severe,
motors will not run normally for lack of pressure drop. If pump pressure
permitted, motor pressure drop will always increase with the WOB
increasing, unless a certain extent is reached, and then the motor stalls.
- 11 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

Under this condition, the motor is breakdown because the sealed cavities
between rotor and stator have been destroyed.
As the motor stalls, footage certainly will also stall, and a sharp
climbing of pressure can be observed on standpipe gauge. This is
because that the rotor has been pushed to one side of the stator and
mud is pumped across the seal face on the opposite side of the rotor.
And then the lobe profile of the stator must deform for the fluid to pass
across the seal face. This causes very high fluid velocity and leads to
serious damage of the stator. So, motor stall should be prevented as
possible as one can.
Commonly to say, the pressure drop leading to motor stall is about
1.5~2 times of the rated pressure drop. If the motor stalls, with the
pressure drop not reached, the cause may be that the stator has been
frayed seriously. That means a new motor is essential.
5.1.5 Torque
When running down hole, output torque of the motor rises with the
increasing of the pressure drop across the power section caused by
enlargement of the WOB. Therefore, the practical output torque depends
on the WOB adopted.
To get a proper torque in drilling, operators should adjust the WOB,
while keeping an eye on the standpipe gauge, until the rated pressure
drop is reached.
5.1.6 Weight on bit
For motor running down hole, a certain weight is required to put on
the bit, producing enough output torque to break up rocks underground.
Magnitude of the WOB can be determined referring to the readings of
standpipe gauge and weight indicator.
A proper WOB helps to produce a torque as high as possible, at the
same time, any abnormal WOB should be prohibited in case that the
- 12 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

bearings are hurt or the motor stalls.

5.1.7 Bit pressure drop
Bits operated with downhole motors are usually nozzled, and the
pressure drop across the nozzle will produce a pressure difference
between the two ends of the bearing assembly.
As described previously, the bearings of normal BPM motors are
lubricated and cooled by drilling fluid. This is realized by bit pressure
drop that forces a share of mud flowing through the clearance around the
bearings. To get a nice effect, the bit pressure drop must be kept at
1.8~7.0 MPa to get an appropriate flow rate through the bearing
assembly that will not do harm to the bearings either by heat because of
its shortage or by erosion because of its excess.
On the other hand, a portion of BPM motors is oil-sealed at the
bearing section, not allowing transit of drilling fluid. For these motors, if
the pressure drop is too large, the corresponding pressure difference
may damage the sealed package. At this point, to gain a good effect
when an oil-sealed motor is used, the possibly bigger nozzle (even do
not use nozzle) should be adopted to depress bit pressure drop.
5.2 Surface preparation
Before tripping into the hole, a careful inspection should be taken on
the motor to ensure a natural running down hole, avoiding unwanted trips
and expense.
5.2.1 Inspection of motor
Make sure that the motor is a new one or a used one normally
serviced. For an ever-used motor not serviced, there may be some
potential danger of unwanted cost down hole. If no choice other than a
newly used one is available, no loose of the joints, or corrosion or nick of
the outside housing that are dangerous enough should be neglected.

- 13 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

5.2.2 Fit on the bit

Connect the bit to the lower end of the motor using a bit breaker,
and rotate the exserted head of the drive shaft with a chain wrench,
making up the screw joints.
5.2.3 Check the dump valve
Set the motor into the hole of rotating table, leaving the dump valve
section out of the hole for observation. And clamp the motor tightly with a
slip. Then, unscrew the lifting sub. Push down the piston of the valve and
hold it at the lower position using a crabstick, and fill the valve with water.
Make it certain that there is no water leakage from the ports of the valve.
Then the piston should be reposited by the spring, with the crabstick
removed. And the water should flow out through every port evenly.
5.2.4 Test run
Make up the kelly stem to the motor, lower the motor until the dump
valve is below the top of the drilling nipple, but visible.
Turn on the pump, circulating the drilling fluid. When the dump valve
is closed, lift up the motor gently; make it certain that the motor is
running. Then lower down the motor to bellow the rotary table, turn off
the pump, the dump valve should open again, letting the drilling fluid out
from the ports.
While testing, you should pay attention to the changing of the
standpipe pressure, and be sure to note down the start-up pressure (the
reading on the standpipe gauge at the very start of the motor running).
For new motors or those used and laid away for a relatively longer
time, the start-up pressure may be very high and a “restraint” may occur;
on the condition, “cat head” or pipe tongs can be used to rotate the drive
shaft head widdershins (being looked down) for 1~3 rounds, then retest
the motor.

- 14 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

5.3 Trip-in
When tripping into the hole, the following should be noticed:
To protect the motor from being damaged or screwed off, any
running of the rotary table is forbidden when the motor has been laid
down into the hole.
And the dropping speed should also be held relatively lower, to
protect the motor from rams caused by tucking, bumping the bottom and
so on. If striking occurs, you can turn on the mud pump, running the
motor to ream the hole for passage.
For a steerable motor set, usually of long offset distance, it is
necessary to rotate the drillstring periodically to eliminate sidetracking
effects.
Sometimes there are sections of hole where filling-in of the drilling
fluid is counteracted, and overflow may even occur. On this condition,
the tripping should pause, until the drillstring is filled, restart the tripping.
When bottom of the hole is about to be touched, the dropping should
be slackened preventing percussion of bit. And do not pack the motor on
the bottom outright; say nothing of applying any larger weight on it.
In the case of higher borehole temperature, it is advisable to pause
here and there, starting circulation to lower the temperature.
5.4 Start the motor
First of all, lift the drillstring upwards about 0.5m, detaching the bit
from the bottom (If there is much scrap in the well due to the small
circulating rate when the drill string was lifted last time, you should lift
higher). Then start up the mud pump and repeat lifting and lowering until
the standpipe pressure is relatively steady. Note down the reading of the
standpipe gauge, namely the circulating pressure drop.
The bottom is touched again; the weight on bit is raised slowly,
causing the reading of the standpipe gauge to increase. Here, the variety
- 15 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

of pressure should be less than the measure of the rated pressure drop
of the motor. That is to say, the increase of the pressure reflects the load
of the motor, indicating whether the WOB applied is right or not.
Therefore, to maintain a steady output torque while drilling, what one
should do is to keep the WOB approximately steady, resulting in an
invariable reading shown on the standpipe pressure gauge, and this can
render the driller aware of the running state of the motor down hole in
time.
5.5 Trip-out
When tripping out of the hole, the following should be noticed:
The motor is pulled out of the hole, the bit breaker is fit on, clamping
the crust of the motor, then rotate the bit widdershins (being looked
down), expelling the rudimental drilling fluid out from the cavities through
the dump valve ports.
The motor is lowered again, leaving the dump valve out on the
rotary table, firstly rinsing is poured into the valve from the top to rinse it.
Then a crabstick is used to push the piston down and then relax time
after time, until the piston can be moved upwards and downwards easily.
Lastly the lifting sub is screwed on, and the motor is pulled out.
Screw off the bit from the motor.
The motor should be delivered to the service office for overhaul in
time.
6 Application of steerable motors
The operation of steerable motors is approximately the same as that
of the normal motors. But, because of the exceptive parts possessed in
general such as bent sub, stabilizer and so on, there still exist some
issues to be regarded.
6.1 Build angle rate
In fact, it is always difficult for the accurate build angle rate of a
- 16 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

steerable motor in any one employment to be educed easily, because of

the variety of the configuration of both motors and BHAs, together with
the influence of geological configurations. If viewed only from motor
configuration, the following can be pointed out as the influential factors
on build angle rate.
Bent angle----generally to say, the bent angle of the motor is roughly
proportional to its build angle rate down hole.
Bent sub and bent housing----in general, motors with bent housing
owns higher build angle rate than those with only bent sub. And the style
of bent housing plays a more important role.
Stabilizer----stabilizers usually help to heighten the build angle rate,
and the style of stabilizer also works in determining the rate.
Coplanarity---- coplanarity of the bend angles to each other and to
unsymmetrical stabilizer should be inspected carefully, for a bad one will
affect the build angle seriously, or make the controlling of hole direction
unsure.
Deflecting process of a hole comprises changing of the deviation
angle and the direction of the hole. So, if a lack of build angle rate is
perceived, the changing of the direction should be inspected at the same
time.
6.2 Footage
Footage may slower or even stop, if the drill string assembly is
unsuitable, or the bend style, stabilizer, outside size of the motor doesn’t
match the hole or the formation. For the adoption of steerable motors,
the interacting between deflecting and footage should be considered
synthetically.
With the increasing of the deviation angle while drilling, if any
decrease of the footage rate appears, and some possible causes such
as abrasion of bit have been excluded, next, the standpipe gauge should
- 17 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

be examined to tell whether the drill string assembly and the motor
structure is improper. (1) In the lithosphere, when the bit is worn, the
friction between the stabilizer and well becomes so large that the stuck
tool may occur. (2) When the well inclination reaches a certain number,
the bevel of stabilizer near bit will be locked with the bore hole. At this
condition the WOB may be large enough, but the standpipe gauge
changes little.
Pay attention to that: the WOB and maximum pressure are given in
certain condition, so they are not unchangeable. During the drilling, WOB
is the bit pressure that can keep normal motor pressure.
6.3 Mud pump pressure
The mud pump pressure or standpipe pressure becomes large with
the increase of well depth. But if the increasing proportion is unbalance
or the pump pressure increases sharply, the reason may be as follows.
(1) Junk (such as bolt, screw cap and gravel etc) blocks dump valve
core.
(2) Lift capacity of drilling fluid is not enough, so cuttings aggrade in
the well. The surface abrasion of driveshaft assembly is the typical

6.4 Air or foam drilling
Traditional drilling fluid is used as power, lubricant and coolant.
Being circulating medium air, mist and foam are restricted much. BPM
has oil-sealed technology of driveshaft assembly, so air PDM was
developed firstly in China by BPM.
K series PDM of BPM use air or foam as power. The higher
rotor/stator lobe configurations with their high torque and slow rpm
- 18 -

outputs have been the most successful.

Much air or foam is needed to clean the well, because its lifting
capacity is not strong. The minimum return air speed of annulus is 3000
ft/min (15.24m/s). The high flow rate will make drilling tool disable earlier.
Lubricant (mist, soup, petroleum base, or polymer) can reduce the
friction between rotor and stator and prevent rotor wearing out. Dump
valves cannot be used when air is the circulating medium.
Due to the compressive of air, the motor cavity pressure changes
little when the standpipe pressure increases suddenly. The drilling fluid
notable such change, which is represented by the lowered rotate speed.
You should reduce the standpipe pressure before lifting drill string,
restarting motor and connecting drill stems. If the standpipe pressure is
not reduced before lifting drills ring, the motor speed will exceed rated
speed, which may destroy the motor.
In principle we suggest starting motor with load and stopping air or
reducing to half to lift drilling tools, which can prevent bit speeding up
suddenly.
For the compressive of air, it is difficult to judge the work state by
standpipe pressure, but easy by the waver of drill stem.
Air compressor can make different flow rate (air with different
pressure). If we consider efficiency, the pressure and flux of air can
follow gaseous equation.
The flow rate of air compressor is measured in standard condition,
so atmospheric pressure ‘P1’ will change with the altitude of the air
compressor. Atmospheric pressure will reduce 0.1psi (689.5 Pa) every
200ft (60.96 m) higher than sea level.
Gaseous equation
V1×P1×η =V2×P2

Where P1 ---actual atmospheric pressure (MPa);

- 19 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

V1---flow rate of air compressor (m3/min);

P2---standpipe pressure (input pressure) (MPa);
V2---motor output flow rate (m3/min)
η ---efficiency

Standpipe pressure P2:

P2=Δ Pm+P0

WhereΔ Pm---motor differential pressure

P0----standpipe pressure without load

η is special for air or foam drilling. Please contact BPM for

detail information.
6.5 Compound drilling
Compound drilling is that running the rotary table while a steerable
PDM is used.
For the offset distances of steerable motors are usually relatively
long, considerable side loads are inevitably brought to bear on the motor
and other drilling tools, which is a potential menace to the security. In
theory, PDM’s limit stress of compound drilling is four times of normal
drilling. Therefore, long-playing running of rotary table should be avoided
to the best, especially for those of larger bend angle, longer offset
distance.
Anyway, compound-drilling intervals should be reduced to the floor
level, and when it is indispensable, the rotating speed should be set at
the lowest level.
7 Maintenance
After every run, the motors should be taken apart, inspected and
maintained immediately. And those not maintained should not be let
down hole and run again, unless the last running time was a very short

- 20 -
BPM DOWNHOLE MOTOR USER’S MANUAL

one, and the working condition was friendly, without any defect of
corruption, cut, abrasion and the like formed badly enough to be a
menace to safety.
If the PDM is used with drilling jar (drilling jar or fishing jar) and has
been jarred, we should stop using and service the PDM. Because the
specific damage of PDM is not known. Housing and drive shaft should be
inspected.
The used motors are likely to cause accidents, leading to unwanted
trips, and even resulting in discard of motors, if run repeatedly without
normal service and replacing of flimsy parts.
Disassembly and service of motors should be at favorable repair
shops. Service people should comprehend the theory, structure and
using of the motors.
The outside housings will be inspected for defects such as cuts and
flaws. A serious cut or any emergence of a flaw means that the housing
should be replaced, reusing being not permitted.
Surface of the threads will be inspected according to related
prescripts. Stand-off of the thread couplings should also be taken note.
Injured thread or larger change of stand-off indicates upcoming replacing
of the housing.
When disassembling a motor, oxy-acetylene flame should be used
to roast the thread coupling parts (not exceeding 250℃), abating the

bonding agent. However, excessive firing may decrease the intensity of

the couplings.
8 Troubleshooting in the hole
Careful attention to variations in the fluid flow pressure can identify
many common downhole problems which may occur while drilling. In
many cases, corrective measures may save a costly trip.

9 Swing and storage

In transporting, swing of a motor should be like this: nylon is used to
hang the motor up at the midst, with the motor kept level. Wire line can
also be used, if enwrapped in rubber cover to protect the housings from
being cut.
The motors should be laid flatly on hard floor or some stands,
objecting to soft or muddy earth for long time. Threads of the two ends
should be protected well to prevent entry of feculence. The storage floor
should be overshadowed, rainproof, well ventilated, with the temperature
not exceeding 45℃.

The shelf life of a motor is 1.5 years, since the production of the
stator. Though an overdue one is usually still practicable, its continuous
runtime may have been reduced more or less.

10 Indention
The performance of a motor also depends upon such factors as
working conditions, medium conditions, condition of BHA, other than the
quality, capability of the motor itself. Therefore, it is very important to
make a proper selection of the type and configuration of a motor.

For each type, there given two charts, one is metric; the other is in
English system. And in each chart, there given five curves for different
flow rates.
In the chart, there are three axes in all, two abscissas and one
ordinate.
The bottom abscissa shows motor differential pressure ( ΔP ).
Where
ΔP = Pon − Poff
.
Pon ----“On bottom” pressure

Poff
----“Off bottom” pressure
The top abscissa shows output torque that means the pure torque
used to break the formation when drilling on.
The values of motor differential pressure and output torque are
corresponding to each other one by one. And there is a basically linear
relation between them.
The left ordinate shows the output rotate speed.
Peak efficiency occurs at a pressure indicated on the applicable
curve by a square (□).

Recommended area of running are shadowed with dots as above.

This is the economical area.
Example:
The example shown in the above shows that a motor with a
differential pressure of 450 psi and a flow rate of 50 gpm is turning at an
approximate speed of 332 RPM. The corresponding output torque would
be approximately 147 lb-ft. And it is obvious that the point is in
economical area, with no adjustment needed.
