Read carefully the operation manual prior to installing and operating the spinning wrench. Especially pay
attention to its Safety Cautions, which is critical to the wrench’s operation safety.
Minimum working temperature for the spinning wrench is 0℃ (32℉). If environmental temperature is
below 0℃ (32℉), please state when placing an order.
1. Safety Cautions
1.1 Requirements for personal safety protection when rotating spinning wrench
1.1.1 The operator needs to read this manual carefully before working so as to understand the basic
performance and operation regulations of this product.
1.1.2 The operator, before operating the spinning wrench, shall wear safety helmet and concentrate on work
instead of fatigue operation.
1.1.3 Any one is not allowed to stand within the scope involved in the spinning wrench.
1.2 Device safety requirements when operating the spinning wrench
1.2.1 Before operating the spinning wrench, use lifting rope which has no defects to well hang the spinning
wrench.
1.2.2 The diameter of steel rope which is fixed at the end of the spinning wrench shall be no shorter than 3/8in
without any defect.
2. General Description
2.1 Application
Q254/250 Pneumatic Spinning Wrench is a roller-type pneumatic spinning tool used in the mechanized spinning
operation in shore and land oilfields. It is applied to 31/2~10(in) drill role and drill collar. It is able to replace the
spinning of the previous spinning rope (spinning chain) during the trip-out and trip-in process.
2.2 System Composition
The spinning wrench is composed of air motor, deceleration transmission mechanism, opening adjustment
mechanism, clamping mechanism and air control system, among which, the power and transmission mechanism
are installed in the left and right enclosures which will be connected by the adjustable screw rod, tension spring,
air spring (pneumatic tyre) to form it as an integrity.
2.3 Working Principle
The spinning wrench makes two clamp arms open or close through pneumatic tyre (that is to clamp or loosen the
pipe column). It then brings the power transmission mechanism to make the roller on the clamp arm rotate so as to
spin the threaded pipe column.

3. Installation
3.1 Wrench installation (Figure 3)
3.1.1 Use rope cappel to tie and hoist the steel rope by selecting one position on the transverse brace below
the derrick crown block girder. This position is about 0.8m far away from the derrick center (at the
opposite of driller and the upper of the place where the fitters generally work). The higher the fixed
position is from the drilling floor plane, the easier the wrench can move. The steel rope is able to swing
by surrounding the derrick center freely. The catenary rope is 1/2~5/8(in) and about 35~40m long. The
free end of the steel rope is tied on the shackle of the lifting spring.
3.1.2 The installation height of wrench is about 1.5m far away from the drilling floor plane (about 0.3~0.5m
above the drill pipe joint).
3.1.3 Two 3/8in steel ropes shall be tied on the shackles of the right and left gears at the end of wrench as the
balance rope so as to restrain the swing of wrench along two directions during the spinning process. If
there is only one balance rope, the rope may swing to the operator when spinning the wrench, causing
injury or even death. The balance rope can not be too long and about the distance from wrench end to
the derrick on the same side when the wrench moves to the wellhead. The other end of wrench end is
fixed on the derrick.
3.1.4 When the spinning wrench is installed, the electric winch or pneumatic winch on the drill floor can be
used for hoisting directly. Alternatively, the wrench can be installed on the drilling floor plane during the
normal drilling process.
The gas consumption of Q254/250 spinning wrench is 15m3/min and fewer pipe joints shall be used when
installing the air pipeline, which shall be connected with gas source directly with less distance and elbows.
The total inlet air pipe is 11/4in cloth inserted hose, which is about 10m long. Joints are set on both ends of air
pipes, among which, one end is connected with the joint at the bottom of the wrench while the other end is on the
atomized lubricator and assembling unit of water-separating gas filter. One 11/4in hose shall be introduced along
the main air pipeline of the drilling floor and connected with water-separating gas filter through one stop valve. If
the wrench is not occupied, close the gate valve but open the air source so as to maintain the wrench on a safe
basis.
Compressed air shall be used to remove all the sundries and moisture in the air pipes before installation.
3.2.1 Use the bolt of the hanger axis to adjust the front and back level of the wrench.
Pull out of adjustable bull stick within the adjustable screw until it coincides with both internal and external
hexagons. The adjustable bull stick shall be bent with the bull stick for 90° in the form of crank. Rotate the handle
to adjust the opening size of the knob and it is better to put the wrench on the drilling floor plane during the
adjustment. Expand both ends of the wrench opening when rotating anticlockwise. If rotating clockwise, the
wrench opening shall draw close to the middle. The adjusted opening shall be adaptive to the external diameter of
drilling rig so as to make the rig pass between the wrench head and roller. Put the bull stick inside the adjustable
4
screw after the said actions are finished.
3.2.3 Open the stop valve on the total inlet air pipe, connect the air circuit, operate the air valve and see
whether the positive and negative action of the wrench are flexible and reliable and whether the air
circuit leaks gas. Stop operation immediately if any fault in order to correct it as soon as possible.
4. Trial Run
4.1 The opening size shall be adjusted to adapt to the drilling rig used.
4.2 Open 11/2 stop valve from which the driller goes to the spinning wrench and inspect whether the balance
rope is tied correctly.
4.3 Push the spinning wrench to the wellhead stably and operate the Reversing Valve (No.3, Fig.4) to bring
wrench head align with pipe joint.
4.4 Wrench rollers should embrace the drill pipe body which is 0.3~0.5m above the drill pipe joint. Never
clamp the wrench on the thickened part of the drill pipe joint.
4.5.1 After the joint is coated with screw oil, the pin end of drill pipe shall enter the female joint as vertically
as possible. If the drill pipe is inclined and the pin end and female joint are not pointed, never use the
spinning wrench. When making up the drill collar, never put the weight of the drill collar totally on
the screw of female joint to prevent the spinning wrench from slipping.
4.5.2 Two position three-way valve shall be operated after the wrench is fastened with drill pipe (drill collar),
so as to make the wrench head lock the drilling tool, move Type B tongs to the wellhead and make up
the joint of the drill pipe.
4.5.3 Operate the air valve of air motor to motivate the right and left air motors so as to drive the driving rolls
rotate and bring the rotation of the drilling tool. Close the air valve and operate the clamp air valve if the
pin end of the drill pipe just contacts the female joint so as to degas the tyre and make the wrench head
loosen the drilling tool.
4.5.4 Exit the wrench from the drill pipe and fasten it with Type B tongs. Never allow to fasten it only with
spinning wrench. The back screwing accident of the drill collar (hole) shall be prevented.
Not spinning wrench but tongs is used to release through rotating the disc during the normal drilling process. If
core drilling is carried out or the drilling troubles are handled, the spinning wrench can be used for drilling or
break-out. Operate the air valve of air motor in reverse direction during the break-out process, use Type B tongs to
loosen the joint and repeat the make-up steps.
5. Dismantling
5.1 Exit the pipe column before dismantling the spinning wrench. Put the spinning wrench on the platform of
wellhead slowly. Close the air source and dismantle the air pipe.
5.2 See Axonometric Drawing of Q254/250 Pneumatic Spinning Wrench Parts for the overhaul of the spinning
wrench.
6. Operation Regulations
6.1 Before opening the spinning wrench, the operator must read this operation manual carefully and
concentrate on work during the operation process.
5
6.2 Mandatory regulations on the operation of spinning wrench:
Do not use the spinning wrench if the pipe joint does not be thread connected well during the make-up process.
6.3.1 Stop operating the spinning wrench immediately if any abnormal noise during the rotation process.
6.3.2 Change the broken or bended rear rope of the spinning wrench as soon as possible.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Different parts shall be maintained as scheduled according to the lubricating key points (the table below).
Inject lubricating grease to 10 grease fittings with grease until the old grease is extruded by the new one.
7.2 0.5~0.9MPa atmospheric pressure shall always be maintained in air circuit during the working process.
7.3 The air supply hose shall be under free status and the pipeline shall be able to extend and deform freely.
When it is bended, abrupt bending from the joint shall be avoided and twisting is prohibited to ensure the
smooth air circulation.
7.4 Never supply the oil excessively or insufficiently to the atomized lubricator during the usage and the oil
level generally remains between the bottom surface of the suction pipe and the lower plane of the
connecting nut of oil storage cup. The oil volume can be adjusted by the metering pin valve and the
standard volume is about 100 drops/m. The dropping speed has been well regulated before delivery.
The atomized lubrication shall be installed along the direction where the air flow forwards as indicated by the
arrow. Never make the plastic bottle of the atomized lubricator contact any chemical agent so as to avoid
damaging it.
Refueling is feasible when supply gas or stopping the supply. The oil product is 20# mechanical oil.
7.5 The water-separating gas filter can filter the big water drops, oil and dirt in air so as to obtain clean
compressed air. The water cup in the lower part is made of transparent PC materials so as to observe the
height of polluted water in cup and filtration pollution at any time. If the color of the filter core is changed
and there is a great number of oil sludge, please remove the cup for cleaning.
7.6 Use clean water to clean the wrench surface thoroughly after finishing using the wrench each time. The
wrench shall be dried by compressed air in summer but with steam in winter.
7.7 During the drilling process or if the wrench is not used for a long period, the wrench shall be tied on the
derrick with coir rope or placed where it is safe on the drilling floor plane so as to avoid damaging the
wrench when the drill pipe ascends or descends to the drilling floor.
7.8 Inspect the wearing of the driving rolls each month. New roller shall be changed if the old one is worn
seriously. Inspect the opening of wrench carefully before usage and the roller clamping pipe can never
make the pipe contact the wrench body.
