Introductory Message
This module is carefully designed to continually facilitate learners to achieve mastery on
the Most Essential Learning Competencies and develop their 21st-century skills. This module
consists of essential components developed appropriately for self-instructional mode of learning.
The components come in various developmental purposes that are designed to diagnose (pretest),
recall and associate (review), discuss, explain, and even provide practice activities, enrichment

2.0
tasks, assessments, and answer keys.

ON
Upon taking the pretest, determine whether you need to take or skip this module. At
100% accuracy, you possess the mastery of the topic in the module; hence, you don’t need to take

SI
it and you may choose to proceed to the next module. At 99% and below, you are recommended

ER
to undertake the module to acquire the necessary skills.

-V
Though allowed, adult supervision is limited only to providing assistance in
accomplishing this module. It is highly recommended that YOU, the learner, should try to engage
S
LE
independently in doing the different tasks for you to become a critical thinker and problem solver
which are the twin goals of Mathematics.
DU

May this module be utilized to its fullest extent in the purpose of learning the
MO

competencies construed as Most Essential for a learner in this level.

N

God bless and enjoy learning!

Differentiating Geometric Sequence From an Arithmetic Sequence

Most Essential Learning Competency:

The learner…
• differentiates a geometric sequence from an arithmetic sequence (M10AL-Id-2)

2.0
What I Need to Know

ON
In this lesson the learner:

SI
1. differentiates a geometric sequence from an arithmetic sequence

ER
2. identifies whether the given sequence is arithmetic or geometric
3. displays confidence in identifying geometric sequence from an arithmetic sequence

-V
The lesson is all about differentiating a geometric sequence from an arithmetic sequence. A
geometric sequence is a sequence where each term after the first is obtained by multiplying the
S
preceding term by a nonzero constant called the common ratio. An arithmetic sequence is a
LE
sequence where every term after the first is obtained by adding a constant called the common
difference.

Arithmetic Sequence

What is It

To determine either the sequence is arithmetic or geometric you must identify if it has a common
difference or a common ratio. The common difference is obtained by subtracting the first term
from the second term while the common ratio is obtained by dividing the second term to the first
term. In symbols:

common ratio is called an arithmetic sequence and a sequence with a common difference is a
geometric sequence. Write a letter to Ryza explaining if her answer is correct or not and tell her
the reasons why. You can use any kind of paper for your letter and place it inside an envelope.
Be creative.
