Dress your little one for the beach in Ruth Oliver’s sweet bubble
romper suit in soft summery pastels. The design can be sewn in
a matter of hours, with comfortable, elasticated leg holes and
neckline for crawling or toddling around. The tie-on straps allow
you to ensure the fit is just right. Use any leftover fabric to
stitch a matching hairband.

1 Download and print the pattern at
www.sewmag.co.uk/templates. Cut two
body pieces from fabric, place right sides
together and pin the two side edges. Sew
a 1cm seam on each side, and press out.
Zig zag or overlock the edges if required.

2 With right sides still facing in, fold the

edge of the leg section over by 1cm,
then 1cm again. Press, pin and topstitch the
hem close to the edge. Cut 30cm of 4mm
wide elastic, attach a small safety pin to
one end and thread it through the channel.
Remove the pin and stitch the ends either
side. Repeat for the other leg. Pin the
gusset section together and stitch to close
and create the two leg holes.

3 To create the neckline, fold the edge

over by 1cm, then 2cm. Press and
topstitch close to the edge to create a
channel. Snip 15cm of 1cm wide elastic,
thread it through the channel and stitch
into each end. Repeat for the other side.

4 Cut 1m of bias binding and press

lengthways, ensuring the two sides
are lined up. Find the halfway point and
pin the fabric to the armhole, sandwiched
between the binding. Working from either
side of this point, continue to secure the
tape to the ends.

5 Topstitch the binding from end to

end, sewing close to the edge of the
tape but ensuring both sides are caught
within the stitch. Repeat for the other
armhole. Check the length of the straps,
and trim if desired. Fold the ends of the
binding over twice and stitch to hide
2 Place the elastic casing pieces right
sides together and sew a 1cm seam
on the long edges. Turn out, press and
around the edge, leaving a 4cm gap.
Clip the curves, turn right side out and
close the gap with a neat stitch.
