Lesson Control Hazards and Risks

What I Need To Know

Identifying and controlling workplace hazards involves many processes. It’s more than
simply “inspecting out hazards.” Before we can effectively control hazardous conditions and
unsafe behaviors, we need to be familiar with their characteristics and the necessary
processes to make sure they are promptly identified and analyzed . On the previous module
we discussed how to identify and prevent hazard and risks in workplace and learn different
saf3ty signs and symbols to prevent injury. This is to avoid and prevent any waste that may
cause the low productivity of the workers, and to avoid any hurdled jobs in order to meet the
requirements. Always remember in order to be effective of our work we need to be familiar
of task or we will be exposing ourselves to hazards and risks. Always remember Hazards
and Risks are liability to our work and to our performance.

What’s New

What is Personal Protective Equipment?

Personal protective equipment, or PPE is designed to protect you from hazards found or off
the job. Face shields used in welding and helmets used for engineering are PPE; other
examples include googles, safety glasses, foot protection, coveralls, gloves, vest, earplugs,
and respirators. If you must wear PPE for your job, your employer must train you to use it
properly. So PPE must comply with national standards

When do you need PPE?

Employers must assess their workplaces to find out if there are hazards that require workers
to use PPE. If there are such hazards, employers must select the right type of PPE and
make sure it fits the employee correctly. In most cases, the employer is required to supply
PPE to their workers at no charge, however there may be exceptions if you wear your PPE
off the job site. Employers must train workers who have to use PPE on how to use it
correctly.
This includes the following:
 Knowing when PPE is needed
 How to use PPE correctly
 Knowing what kind of PPE to use
 Understanding what PPE can and cannot do to protect workers
 How to put on, adjust, wear, and take off PPE
 How to maintain PPE.
1
What is It
LO 3 Control Hazards and Risks
3.1 Demonstrate the use of PPEs in the workplace

Personal protective equipment, or PPE, is designed to protect you from hazards found on or
off the job. Face shields used in ice hockey and helmets used for biking are examples of
PPE; other examples include goggles, safety glasses, foot protection, coveralls, gloves,
vests, earplugs, and respirators.

Why is a PPE considered the least effective type of protection against injury?
 It may not fully protect you
 It may be uncomfortable to wear.
 It requires the employee to have it, put it on, and keep it on.
 It might not fit correctly.

It is important to remember that PPE comes in various sizes. If the PPE does not fit
correctly, it may be necessary to find and try a different size or brand. In order for it to be
effective and provide protection, PPE must fit properly.

PPE is often used in combination with other hazard-control methods like removing the
hazard from the workplace and using good work rules. Even though PPE is considered to be
the least effective form of protection, there are some conditions where it is the only
protection available to protect the worker. For example, if a worker has to do work in a
confined space, they may have to wear a respirator because ventilation may not be
adequate.

 Safety shoes, leggings, and foot guards help protect workers from falling objects,
sharp objects, wet and slippery surfaces, hot surfaces, and electrical hazards.
 Face shields, goggles, and safety glasses with side shields can protect workers
from liquids and solids that can get into their eyes. Look for the marking ANSI Z87.1.
 Earplugs or earmuffs can help prevent damage to hearing. Exposure to high noise
levels can cause irreversible hearing loss as well as physical and psychological
stress.
 Gloves can protect workers’ hands from chemicals, hot and cold temperatures,
vibration and sharp objects. Gloves must fit properly and be the right kind of material
for the job.
 Respirators. Employers must first try to remove breathing hazards. If they can’t,
workers may have to wear respirators. The kind of respirator required depends on
the kind of hazard the worker is exposed to. For example, dust masks do not protect
against chemical vapors Respirators must also fit correctly in order to prevent illness.
If a worker has to wear a respirator, it is the employer’s responsibility to provide the
employee with a medical evaluation to make sure they are healthy enough to work
safely in a respirator.
 Protective Cover all /Full body suits. In some cases, workers must protect most or
all of their bodies against heat, cold, radiation, hot metals and liquids, body fluids, or
hazardous materials.

Proper Use of Personal Protective Equipment

The primary approach in any safety effort is to maintain or change the physical
environment so that accidents would not occur. However, it is necessary for economic
reasons or in temporary or changing conditions to safeguard personnel by equipping them
individually with specialized personal protective equipment (PPE). Although the use of PPE
is an important consideration in the development of a safety and health program, it should
not be used permanently for maintaining a safe and healthy work environment. In general,
government regulations list the use of PPE as a case of last resort. Analyzing accident
situations is done to determine whether PPE can prevent a recurrence. When work
conditions cannot be made more safely clearly PPE is necessary.

Proper Training
To obtain the worker’s complete compliance with the requirements to wear the PPE, the
following factors must be considered:

6
1. The extent to which the personnel who must wear the equipment understand its
necessity
2. The ease and comfort with which it can be worn with a minimum of interference with
normal procedures.
3. The available economic, social, and disciplinary sanctions which can be used to
influence the attitudes of the worker

Head Protection
Safety hats should be inspected prior to their use.

 Inspect suspension systems that show evidence of materials cracking, tearing,

fraying or other signs of deterioration. Suspension should provide a minimum
clearance of 1 to 1.25 inch between the top of the worker‟s head and the inside
crown of the hat.
 Check any signs of cracks of perforations of brim or shell, deformation of shell, or
evidence or exposure to excessive heat, chemicals or radiation.
 Remove any accumulation of conductive material on or inside the shell that cannot
be removed prior to use.

Objects should not be placed inside the safety hat between the shell and the suspension
device. This space is designed so an impact will not transmit to the head of the worker.

Safety hats should be kept free of abrasions, scrapes, and nicks and should not be
deliberately dropped, thrown, or otherwise abused because they will lose their protective
qualities. Ventilation should not be drilled in safety hats.

Eye and Face Protection

Eye protectors must meet the minimum requirements:
 Provide adequate protection against the particular hazards for which they are
designed
 Be reasonably comfortable when worn under the designated conditions
 Fit snugly without interfering with the movements or vision of the wearer
 Be durable.
 Be capable of being disinfected.
 Be kept clean and in good repair
 Design, construction, testing, and use of eye and face protection must be in
accordance with ANZI Z8.1-1989. The fitting of goggles and safety spectacles should
be performed by someone skilled in the procedure. Prescribed safety spectacles
should be fitted only by a qualified optical person. Safety spectacles require special
frames. Combinations of normal street wear frames with safety lenses are not in
compliance with the required standards for eye protectors

https://slideplayer.com/slide/5818670/
Ear Protection
The prevention of excessive noise exposure is the only way to avoid hearing damage.
Engineering and administrative control must be used if the sound levels are exceeded. If

7
such controls fail to reduce the sound levels within the level specified, personal hearing
protection must be used. Molded earplugs should be individually fitted by a professional.
Some earplugs are disposable, to be used one time and then thrown away. The non-
disposable type should be cleaned after each use for proper protection.
Earmuffs must make a perfect seal around the ear to be effective. Glasses, long sideburns,
long hair and facial movements, such as chewing may reduce protection. Special
equipment is available for use with glasses or beards.

Foot and Leg Protection

For protection of feet and legs from falling or rolling objects, sharp objects, molten metal, hot
surfaces, and wet slippery surfaces, workers should use appropriate foot guards, safety
shoes, boots and leggings.
Never wear open-toed footwear while working with hot metal or welding apparatus.

Safety Belts, Lifelines and Lanyards

Lifelines, safety belts, and lanyards are used only for safeguarding employees. Any lifeline,
safety belt, or lanyard are actually subjected to in-serving loading, as distinguished from
static load testing shall be immediately removed from service and shall not be used again for
employee safeguarding.

LO 3 Control Hazards and Risks

3.2 Enumerate the benefits of observing safety procedure in the workplace
What is Safety?
Safety is the state of being “SAFE”, the condition of being protected from harm or other non-
desirable outcomes. Safety can also refer to the control of of recognized hazards in order to
achieve an acceptable level of risk. Full form of safety Stay Alert For Evert Task You do.
The term safety also means a state of being protected against physically. This is why
workplace safety are necessary. They are important for the wellbeing of employers and
employees alike. The feeling of assurance that one has, knowing that he will return safely
from work is greater that anything else.
Employers should also learn the desired aspects of their employees in terms of safety and
protection. This will help increase productivity and the quality of the products and services:
Here are some Benefits of a Safe and Healthy Work Environment

11
 It goes without saying that the safer the environment, the more productive it
is. Productive employees can produce more output in less time, reducing
operational costs for a company
 Workplace safety promotes the wellness of employees and employers alike.
Healthier employees do tasks more efficiently and they are happier in
general.
 There are very few accidents in a safe environment. This result in less
downtime for safety investigation and reduces costs for worker’s
compensation. This also reduces the time needed for employees to heal from
injuries.
 Damage to industrial equipment creates costs for replacement and repair.
Avoiding workplace injuries and damage to industrial equipment will incur
fewer expenses and increase profit.
 If employers are concerned about the safety of their employees, the
employees are more confident and comfortable in general. Also absenteeism
rates drop and employees are more focused on ding their tasks.
