Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the General Mathematics – Grade 11 Alternative Delivery Mode

(ADM) Module on Functions!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed, and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or

facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum

while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also

aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into

consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the

body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this

module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to

manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist

the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the General Mathematics – Grade 11 Alternative Delivery Mode

(ADM) Module on Rational Functions!

Rational Function is a function that serves as the quotient of two polynomials.

Rational functions can be represented in three different ways – by equation, table of
values, or by using a graph.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

What I Need to Know This will give you an idea of the skills or
competencies you are expected to learn in the
module.

What I Know This part includes an activity that aims to

check what you already know about the
lesson to take. If you get all the answers
correct (100%), you may decide to skip this
module.

What’s In This is a brief drill or review to help you link

the current lesson with the previous one.

What’s New In this portion, the new lesson will be

introduced to you in various ways such as a
story, a song, a poem, a problem opener, an
activity or a situation.

At the end of this module you will also find:

References This is a list of all sources used in developing

this module.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

3
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and
gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

4

Representation of Rational
1 Function

There is magic in graphs.

The profile of a curve reveals in a flash a whole situation
– the life history of an epidemic, a panic, or an era of
prosperity.
The curve informs the mind, awakens the imagination,
convinces.

9
What is It

( )
A rational function is a function of the form 𝑓(𝑥) = ( )
, where 𝑎(𝑥) and 𝑏(𝑥)
are polynomial functions and 𝑏(𝑥) ≠ 0.

Below are some examples of rational function:

1. 𝑓(𝑥) =

2. 𝑓(𝑥) =

3. 𝑓(𝑥) =

A rational function can be represented by using an equation, table of values,

or graph.
𝟒
Example 1: Represent this rational function, 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙 using

a) an equation,

b) table of values, and

c) graph.

10
Solution:
𝟒
a) 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙 can be represented by the equation 𝑦 = .

b) Construct a table of values by assigning values for x, then solve for the values of
y.

x -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
y -1 -1.33 -2 -4 𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑑 4 2 1.33 1

c) Sketch the graph.

Since the equation is undefined when x=o, the graph of the line x=0 will not
be intersected by the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) = .

𝒙 𝟑
Example 2: Represent this rational function, 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙 𝟑
using

a) an equation,

b) table of values, and

c) graph.

Solution:
𝒙 𝟑
a)𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙 𝟑
can be represented by the equation 𝑦 = .

b) Construct a table of values by assigning values for x, then solve for the values of
y.

x -8 -6 -4 -2 0 2 3 4 5
y 0.45 0.33 0.14 -0.2 -1 -5 𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑑 7 4

11
c) Sketch the graph.

Since the equation is undefined when x=3, the graph of the line x=3 will not
be intersected by the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) = .

𝒙 𝟏
Example 3: Represent this rational function, 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐 𝟐𝒙 𝟏
using

a) an equation,

b) table of values, and

c) graph.

Solution:
𝒙 𝟏 𝒙 𝟏
a)𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐 𝟐𝒙 𝟏
can be represented by the equation 𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 𝟐𝒙 𝟏
.

b) Construct a table of values by assigning values for x, then solve for the values of
y.

x -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
y -0.33 -0.5 -1 𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑑 1 0.5 0.33 0.25 0.2

12
c) Sketch the graph.

Since the equation is undefined when x=-1, the graph of the line x=-1 will not
𝒙 𝟏
be intersected by the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝒙𝟐 𝟐𝒙 𝟏
.

15
What I Have Learned

How do we represent rational functions?

16
What I Can Do

Solve this real-life problem by applying the three ways on how to represent rational
function.

Juan joined the 200-meter track competition in Palarong Pambansa last year.
His speed can be computed by taking the time for him to run the track and applying
it to the formula 𝑠 = . Since the distance is fixed at 200 meters, we can use the
formula 𝑠 = .

17
Assessment

Represent each rational function as an equation, table of values, and graph.

Equation Table of Values Graph

1. 𝑓(𝑥) = x −4 −3 −2 −1 0 1 2 3 4

2.𝑓(𝑥) =

4. 𝑓(𝑥) =
( ) x 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

5.𝑓(𝑥) =
x −2 −1 0 1 2 3 4 5

19

Make three rational functions of your own, and then represent them by using an
equation, table of values, and graph.
