2. A cantilever beam with an inverted U section as shown in Figure 2, is subjected
to its own weight of q = 500 N/m and a concentric point load P at B. Find the 35
maximum permissible value of load P at B (kN) if the allowable bending stress in
tension and compression is σa =125 MPa.

  (a) Draw the shear stress distribution along the depth of the box beam as
3. shown in Figure 3 under the shear force of 100 kN. If the wood beam has an 25+10
allowable shear stress of τallow = 10 MPa,

A reinforced concrete beam shown in Figure 4 (b) is acted on by a positive bending
4(b). 20
moment. Steel reinforcement consists of 4 bars of 28 mm diameter. The modulus
of elasticity for the concrete is Ec = 25 GPa while that of the steel is Es = 200
GPa. If allowable stresses for concrete and steel are σc = 9 MPa and σs =140
MPa, respectively, what is the maximum permissible positive bending moment?

Q.5 In the structure shown in Fig. 5, an 8- mm- diameter pin is used at A and 12- mm- diameter (35)
pins are used at B and D. Knowing that the ultimate shearing stress is 120 MPa at all
connections and that the ultimate normal stress is 230 MPa in each of the two links joining
B and D, determine the allowable load P if an overall factor of safety of 2.0 is desired.

A force P= 3 kN is applied to a rigid bar suspended by three wires, as shown in Fig.6. All (35)
Q.6
wires are of equal size and the same material. For each wire, A = 120 mm2, E = 200 GPa
and L = 4 m. If, initially, there were no slack in the wires, how will the applied load
distribute between the wires?

The composite shaft shown in Fig.7 consists of a 5 mm thick brass jacket (Gb = 39 GPa)
Q.7
(35)
bonded to a 40 mm diameter steel core (Gst = 77 GPa). The shaft is subjected to a 600 N.m
torque. Determine (i) the maximum shearing stress in the brass jacket, (ii) the maximum
shearing stress in steel core, (iii) the angle of twist of B relative to A.
