INTRODUCTION

Bloom's taxonomy is a classification system published in 1956 to help in defining and distinguishing the
levels of human cognitive such as thinking, learning and understanding. It was originally organized in
three domains namely; cognitive, affective and psychomotor domain. The cognitive dormain was also
classified into six levels namely; knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and
evaluation. The cognitive domain is basic levels to more complex levels. It supports the idea that
learning is built to improve the knowledge and skills that are already learnt. Knowledge is considered to
be the foundation of all other learning levels since all other abilities and skills depend on the acquisition
of knowledge. Much of Bloom's taxonomy is used for developing and organizing course materials for
both the students and the instructors.

IMPORTANCE OF USING BLOOM'S TAXONOMY IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

Bloom's taxonomy helps the students to create a solid foundation of knowledge enabling them to create
learning goals which help them to outline good expectations of their understanding. Knowledge helps
the learners to recall certain important information, ideas and facts that are useful in their area of study.

Bloom's taxonomy helps the instructor to clarify and understand the organization of goals and objectives
of learning. Through organization of the learning goals, the instructor is able to create appropriate
activities and develop relevant strategies of delivery instructions and information to students. This helps
them to understand whether the instructions and evaluation are consistent with the learning objectives.

Through Bloom's taxonomy, students are able to use the knowledge learnt to understand the
information given to bring different ideas together to form cohesive ideas that will be well understood
and also relevant to the area of study.

Bloom's taxonomy helps the instructor to use the hierarchy skill of cognitive domain to develop tasks
base on the learning goals of a particular course. It is important to outline learning objectives to help
students and instructors to understand the purpose of each exchange in class.

Through Bloom's taxonomy, students are able to understand and identify what they achieved at every
step of their course. This is where students are able to understand and demonstrate the processes
taught without relating it with the stated ideas.

Though the cognitive domain of Bloom's taxonomy, students are able to identify and make judgements
about the materials provided for a specific course under study. Evaluation skills helps the learners to
make conclusions whether the available resources are relevant to their course of specialization.
Bloom's taxonomy helps the instructor to divide the information into meaningful parts. This helps them
to evaluate and organize ideas into simpler subtopics that facilitate the teaching process based on the
outlined learning hence improving the understanding abilities.

In addition, Bloom's taxonomy assist the instructor to refer to the learning objectives throughout the
development process enabling them to slowly increase the difficulty of tasks hence promotion the
memory of the students. This helps the students to achieve the learning goals through clear strategies
outlined by their instructors.

Bloom's taxonomy helps in the classification of the cognitive level of the students through the way they
ask and respond to questions. This helps in understanding the cognitive psychomotor and affective
domain that teachers have as the outcomes of their students, hence, the instructor is able to conclude
where the students grasp the concept or not.

Through Bloom's taxonomy, students are able to answer challenging questions that are posed to them
to ascertain their knowledge. This is done through justification of their answers hence promoting with
the sense of power over making their own decisions not only in classroom but also in real life.

Through Bloom's taxonomy, students are able to acquire knowledge through ideas, facts and concepts
rather than particular events.

Bloom's taxonomy helps to determine the aims on how design training operates at higher levels of
taxonomy for more effective learning.

Lastly, Bloom's taxonomy helps the instructor to identify the intellectual levels at which students can
work . It helps them through asking more detailed questions as well as promoting their cognitive
development.

CONCLUSION

Bloom's taxonomy provides a framework that helps to plan and organize the goals and objectives of
learning. Knowledge is the foundation where other level depend on. Arrangements is done from the
basic one to more complex.
