THE ESSENCE AND NATURE OF VALUES

In this module, we shall present the essence and nature of values. It is important
that a working knowledge of values be presented in as much as this treatise attempts
to do a Herculean task of presenting the essentials of values education.

The Essence of Values

Etymologically, the word values comes from the Latin word “valere” which

means to measure the worth of something.

Values are the elements of life prevailing in any society.
They lie at the man’s core life. They color his choice. They shape and determine an
individual’s or group’s decision to like or dislike, favor or disfavor, change or not to
change. Thus, knowledge of people’s values, including their orientation and
preferences, will guide planners, policy-makers, and change agents in the planning
and implementation of responsive development programs. Equipped with such
knowhow, they can evoke maximum public response.

We also say that value is anything that appeals to us in any way. They are a priori
intentional objects of feelings.
The following are true values:
They are positive and negative values;
Values create an atmosphere, hence, we say a sense of values;
Values are of diverse type;
Values transcend facts;
COURSE MODULE

Values clamor for existence or realization; and,

Man experiences a certain order of values.

There are also such things as subjective and objective values. Truly, it can be said
that value experience involves a subject valuing and the sentimental value of a ring to
someone is a subjective value. Life as opposed to death is an objective value. And this
thing brings us to moral values.

Characteristics of Moral Values

1. A value becomes moral because it is recognized as a reasonable and freely
chosen by a human person.
2. Moral values are pre-eminent over the human values.
3. Moral Values are absolute; i.e., independent of other values and preferred for
their own sake.
4. Moral values are universal and necessary for everyone; i.e., friendship remains a
value to all even if the friend is a rascal.
5. Moral values are obligatory; i.e., they ought to be realized and cannot be
postponed.

THE ESSENCE AND NATURE OF VALUES EDUCATION

We shall examine the essence and nature of values education. What kind of
education leads to a happy, productive, rewarding and successful life?
We start with the affirmation that true education is the most important commodity
a person receives in life. Lack of true knowledge of false education can destroy
individuals and even nations.
The late American President John F. Kennedy said it so powerfully: “A child
miseducated is a child lost.” This is very simple but a very profound observation indeed.

The Power of Education

“Education cannot afford to be indifferent to the
Curricular demand of the present situation. It is
Necessary to inject through systematic educational
Efforts a counterveiling force that will address itself
To such elements which threaten national tranquility
And national unity”
– Dr. Minda Sutaria (1988)

Political leaders have long realized the power of education.

“Education is a weapon, whose effect depends on who holds it in his hands and at
whom it is aimed.” – Joseph Stalin, leader of the former Soviet Union from 1924 to 1953.

Philosophers, theorists, statesmen, and politicians have understood that the

existence of a nation hinges on education although they disagree among themselves
COURSE MODULE

as to what constitutes true education.

From the statement of Dr. Sutaria, we can infer that Philippine society is presently
seeking fresher dimensions and directions towards social transformation and
development. However, to change whether it be in process or structure, will certainly
move unless people themselves are reformed. To realize the desired social change,
the values attitudes, an behavior of the Filipinos must be appropriately reoriented.

Education, Society and Values

When one thinks of a “system of education” one must include the society beyond
the classroom. And the home must rank as the primary source of education.
Educators rightly complain that too many of today’s parents are simply “dumping
their problems” into the schools. They expect the schools to teach their children
everything there is to know. The school cannot be the sole educating instrument of
society--nor even its major one.
George Santayana (1863-1952), the Spanish-born American philosopher, put it
quite well: “A child educated in school is an uneducated child.”

Belonging to the world of intangibles, values education is a term that defines

definition. At best, we can only describe it as synonymous with life itself. After all, all
education is values education. It is the search for the human good whose structure is
presented as follows:
