    What is a SCALE?

    Study the case below!


    A plan of a house is drawn to scale 1:100.
    Scale 1:100 means every 1 cm in the drawings
    represents 100 cm in the actual size.
    If the width of the house in the drawings is 10 cm,
    then the actual width of the house is :
    10 x 100 cm = 1000 cm = 10 m.

    What is a SCALE?
    From the case before, we can conclude that:

    A SCALE is a comparison between the distance


    in the drawings to the actual distance.

    1st Example
    The width of a minimalist house’s model was
    made in dimension such that 18 cm represented
    9 m in actual distance. Determine the model
    scale!

    So, the house’s model scale is 1 : 50.

    2nd Example
    Given the scale of a map is 1 : 3.000.000.
    If the distance from Bogor to Jakarta is 6 cm on the
    map, then determine the actual distance!

    So, the actual distance from Bogor to Jakarta is 180 km.

    3rd Example
    The distance from Seoul to Busan is 325 km. If
    the two towns were drawn in a map with scale of
    1 : 2.500.000, then determine their distance on the
    map!

    Study the image on the left.
    If the scale used in the drawings is 1 : 150,
    then determine the actual area of the park!
