LET’S EXPLORE!

What will you expect to know?

Filipinos expressed his thoughts, feelings, and struggles in many ways either
in language, literature, history, art, music, and Philosophy (Fernandez, SP 2009) as
cited in his book The Human Image in the Arts: Introduction to Humanities. How
to determine the Filipino characteristics of an artwork? Does it exhibit remarkable
4
sign or implication that determines the identity and authenticity? The Philippines is
obviously rich in culture and art. Its manifestation can be bestowed in term of
the art scene and responses to socio-economic and Political issues. The Filipino
artists are instantly conscious of the ancestral roots trying to shun away
the shadow of colonial influence. The fact that the Philippines had been colonized for
several decades, thus the way of life of the Filipinos had been influenced in
many ways.

Philippine folklore, mythology, and philosophy are one of the subjects of art
expression. In fact, festival in various regions prove the religiosity and superstitions
of people which we think it would be beneficial in transcending
sense of pride and identity, Dedal, J. L (2017), cited in his book Contemporary
Philippine Arts from the Regions: An appreciation Towards National Identity.

Philippine folklore, mythology, and philosophy are some of the subjects of art
expression. In fact, a festival in various regions proves the religiosity and
superstitions of people which we think would be beneficial in transcending sense of
pride and identity, Dedal, J. L (2017), cited in his book Contemporary Philippine Arts
from the Regions: An appreciation Towards National Identity. Abdulmari Asia Imao a
Tausug and a Muslim raised into the limelight of creative art that exhibited the
colorful culture of Muslims in Mindanao. In the field of Music Levi Celerio also made
a name by using indigenous material, a leaf: as medium to create harmonic
melodies. As lyrist, he was commended for writing traditional folk melodies that
rekindled the memories of Filipinos. For literary arts, F. Sionil Jose courageously
wrote about Nationalism and social justice which reflects the desires of all Filipinos.
Amado V. Hernandez was also vocal in his writing about the plight of the farmers. In
film making one of the famous directors was Ismael Bernal. His masterpieces
reflected the struggles of Filipinos against social injustices and women
empowerment. Himala portrayed by Nora Aunor won several recognitions in the
country and abroad. Francisca Reyes-Aquino was also famous in the field of
dancing. She conducted research on local forms of celebration and rituals. In fact her
research made the Filipino youth knowledgeable of their cultural heritage, Ganzon,
CL (2017).

The work of many Contemporary Filipino artists is a great example of a

polychromatic style in which the emphasis is in the intense numerous colors. This
would be expressed in relation to multi-colored traditional creation such as fan, mats,
hats, textiles, lanterns and Christmas decors and predominantly expressed in
festivals in the regions of Mindanao like Diyandi of Iligan City, Kaamulan of
Bukidnon, Higalaay of Cagayan de Oro City, kadayawan of Davao, Binalbal of
Tudela, Inagta of Sinacaban, Dalit of Tangub City and Sagingan festival of Tubod
Lanao del Norte. These festivals are commonly seen in every street dancing during

5
the celebration. Intricate designs and colorful costumes mesmerize the interest of the
viewers.

Contemporary artist Aze Ong is known for her organic forms made of
crocheted thread use as a decoration which is inspired by Talaandig tribe. She uses
crochet as a medium of art. Mariano Amar Catague of Davao, usually painted tribal
Manuvu attire. He further emphasizes the pattern of lines and dots. The painting
reveals the peaceful character of the tribe but displaced in their sacred ancestral
land. Moreover, Bert Monterona from Iligan City is innovating indigenous materials
for his art, especially for tapestry paintings and bamboo stick paintings. The motif
such as scallops, triangular mountains, flame, and leaf-like patterns, Ganzon, CL
(2017). The means of transportation of commuters today is the jeepney. It is
decorated with different landscape and rural scenery. It goes to show that Filipino art
is also multifunctional. Multifunctional art is having multiple purposes
Steven Patrick Fernandez, a professor of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology,
Iligan City, the founder of IPAG (Integrated Performing Arts). IPAG is an institute
based cultural company which showcases the colorful Moro history and culture. It
has portrayed the struggle of the Moro since preoccupation of the colonizers in
Mindanao. The artistic production music, dance,
and arts reflect the anthology of Moro in Mindanao. IPAG and Professor Steven
Patrick Fernandez also won prestigious awards in the country and abroad for his
superb and exemplary performance on stage. Bringing Mindanao Culture all over the
Philippines, Asia and Europe for better understanding of Mindanao culture, somehow
promote the culture of peace
