Components of a Balanced Lifestyle

Though it may be difficult to imagine, what we eat today and how much exercise we do can
have a strong connection with how healthy we are in the years to come. This is when some
people say ‘you are what you eat’ – this meaning, you are the consequences of what you
have eaten. The habits that we create in relation to what we eat affects the chance of
developing a diet-related disease down the track. Additionally, one of the biggest problems
for both adolescents and adults is allocating time for physical activity. Many people do not
do enough daily exercise although it has enormous health benefits. This also impacts on
later life as those who regularly exercise is more likely to do it when older.

The term balanced lifestyle can be used in many ways and have many different meanings to
different people.

Components of a Balanced Lifestyle


Read the following scenario and answer the questions.

David is an Aboriginal boy who is in year 9. He is very good at sports and often receives
praise from his friends, family and teachers. He trains hard and says no to drinking, smoking
and drugs. Dave has great leadership potential. He often volunteers to help coach the
younger students and will referee games as well. Dave comes from a large extended family,
his parents both have jobs they like and the family enjoys the benefit of their parent’s hard
work. Dave has a number of good mates. He believes that if you treat people with respect
they will respect you.

1. Is Dave health or unhealthy. List the factors that lead to your decision.
David is very healthy. Factors from the scenario in which helped me lead to my decision
include the fact that he is very good at sports, he treats people with respect, is a good
leader, and says no to drinking, smoking and drugs.

2. How does David illustrate components of a balanced lifestyle?

Nutrition
The food we eat keeps our body working. A healthy, balanced diet provides a variety of
nutrients that are critical for growth and development. But how do we know what to eat
and how much?

Activity: identify which foods would be the heathier choice:

Food is the fuel that you need for your body. All food and drink (except water) contain
kilojoules that are either converted into energy or stored as fat. Some foods are very
nutritious – this meaning that they contain lots of nutrients. Other foods are high in
kilojoules but have very few nutrients, such as soft drink and cake. It is the basic principle
that to ensure our bodies get the food they need we must eat foods rich in nutrients.
However, for some people they do not understand, or they choose to eat foods high in fat
or sugar.

What are healthy food habits?


Young people eat a range of foods for many reasons. Think about the foods you eat weekly.
Are they healthy? Could they be healthier? The Australian Guideline for Healthy Eating
recommend that we enjoy a range of nutritious foods. They outline 5 food groups that
provide nutrients that we need to ensure we grow and function. If you are very active you
may burn up lots of energy, you will need to eat more serves of these foods to sustain your
energy levels.
Using the chart Ms Dodds has shown you in class identify the 5 food groups and what foods
belong in each.
