Only Urban Utilities-approved water meters can be installed and used in our service area. All approved
meters include a 10-digit Urban Utilities serial number.
Please note: the information provided here is not an exhaustive list of requirements for the selection an and
installation of a water meter and relates only to the selection of water meters with approved serial
numbers.
How to read an Urban Utilities water meter serial number

An Urban Utilities serial number consists of 10 digits; three letters at the start, followed by seven numbers.
Refer to Table 1 for the different manufacturer makes and models below.
The three letters identify the (i) size, (ii) manufacturer and (iii) model of the meter, respectively. The first two
numbers represent the year the meter was manufactured (YY). The remaining five numbers indicate the
supplier production number.

Note: Meter sizes not listed in this table (for example, 40mm diameter) are not permitted for new installations
Exception: Where approved, Siemens Mag Flowmeter installations will have a Prefix “F“ followed by 4 digits (for example,
F2859), which is allocated to the meter at time of commissioning by Urban Utilities.
Examples:
Using the Table 1 above, the serial number for all Urban Utilities’ meter sizes and meter models can be
calculated:
1. A 20mm Itron TD8 meter manufactured in 2019 will have the serial number ADB1943518.
2. A 25mm Itron TD8 meter manufactured in 2020 will have the serial number BDA2012512.
3. A 25mm Elster V100 meter manufactured in 2018 will have the serial number BBP1824651.
Approved letter prefixes
Table 2 contains Urban Utilities’ list of approved water meters current at date of publication and the respective
serial numbering letter prefix. Please refer to the the Civil IPAM list on the SEQ Code website for a full list of
meters approved for use in South East Queensland.
If the meter number on your project does not start with one of the prefixes below, further investigation is
required into the compliance of the meter, and you may/will be required to replace . All meters greater than
50mm shall only be supplied by Urban Utilities, through our Large Meter ordering process.

Note on Sensus water meters: if the Urban Utilities serial number is not located under the cap on the face of the meter, it
may be located on a stainless-steel plate affixed to the flange of the meter – see the illustration below.
