Questions for Practice (Class Work)

Q. 1) In an examination, Ali got 30 out of 40 marks while Ahmed obtained 5/7 of the total
marks. Who performed well?

Sol:

× 100% = 75%

× 100% = 71.4%

Ali performed well.

Q. 2) 200 students applied for an exam. Out of them 180 appeared and 70% of them passed.
How many failed?

Sol:

180 × 30% = 54 failed

Without calculator: 10% of 180 is 18

For 30%: 18 × 3 = 54

Q. 3) A trader bought 3 dozen cups at Rs. 35 each. He wishes to earn a profit of 50% by selling
them all. But he breaks 6 cups in storage. At what price must he sell the remaining cups
to earn the same profit?

Sol:

36 × 35 = 1260

Required profit: 50% of 1260 which is 630

Total sale price should be: 1260 + 630 = 1890

Remaining cups: 36 – 6 = 30

Price should be: 1890/30 = Rs. 63

Q. 4) Mr. A purchased a camera for Rs. 2800. The original price of camera was Rs. 4000. What
percentage of discount did he received?

Sol:

Disc. = 4000 – 2800 = 1200

% of disc = × 100% = 30%

Q. 5) An article sold for Rs. 9100 (inclusive of 30% tax). What was the original price of article
excluding tax?

Sol:

9100 × = Rs. 7000

RG formula:

Given Amount ×

Original Price is always 100%

Here Tax is 30%

So the sale price must be 100% + 30% = 130%

OP = 100

Add: Tax = 30

SP = 130

In this question sale price is given which is Rs. 9100 so its % (130) is written in
denominator.

And Original Price is Required whose % (100) is written in numerator.

Hence we get the answer.

Now consider the same question as:

An article sold for Rs. 9100 (inclusive of 30% tax). What was the amount of tax paid?

Here, according to RG Formula:

9100 × = Rs. 2100

Another Method:

Let the original price is Rs. ‘X’ then tax will be 30% of ‘x’

X + 30% of X = 9100

X+ = 9100

= 9100

= 9100

X = 9100 ×

X = 7000

Q.6) Ali’s income is 25% more than of Ahmad. What percent is Ahmed’s income less
than Ali’s income?

Sol: let Ahmed’s income is Rs 100 then Ali’s will be 125

Difference = 125 – 100 = 25

% = × 100% = 20%

Q.7) A sales man is paid Rs.60 per hour along with a 5% commission on sales. One day
he worked from 8am to 10pm and sells articles of Rs.20000. What amount did he
earn?

Sol: Hours worked: 14

(14 × 60) + ( 5% × 20000)

= 840 + 1000

= Rs. 1840
Q.8) By selling a car for Rs. 540000, Ahmad suffered a loss of 20%. How much should
he sell it for to achieve a profit of 7.5%?

Sol: 540000 × = 675000( original cost)

675000 × = 50625(gain)

675000 + 50625 = 725625

OR

675000 × = 725625

Q.9) At a sale, Haseeb bought a bottle of juice for Rs. 70 after getting a discount of
10% on it. How much was the bottle of juice marked at?

Sol: 70 × = 77.77

Q.10) Ali marks his goods 20% above his cost price and then offers his customers a
discount of 10%. Calculate his gain percentage.

Sol: Let CP is 100 Then MP will be 120

10% of 120 is 12 which is discount

So SP will be 120 – 12 = 108

Original investment was 100 and he is selling at 108

As 8 is 8% of 100 so his gain will be 8%
