Characteristics of a Person
―The Human Person, Not Real but Existing‖ that the human people have several
characteristics, among which are the following:
1. Rational - Every person is a rational being. This is what distinguishes a person from all other
creatures in the world. As a rational being, a person is free to think and has the capacity to
reason. He can distinguish what is right and what is wrong because he has intellect.
2. Free - All human beings are born free. A person has the freedom to do or not to do a
specific action. However, every person must be responsible for his own action. In other
words, a person can do whatever he pleases but not to the extent of doing harm to his co-
creatures.
3. Unique - Every person is unique. Every person has his own identity such that no two persons
are the same. Generally speaking, human beings have the same characteristics and
physical features and but no two persons are the same because every person has its own
perception, has different sets of values and priorities in life.
4. Social being - Every person is intrinsically a social being. He cannot detach his ―being‖
from others and all other creatures in the universe. Human nature is characterized by his
togetherness and relationship towards other creatures; be it a thing, object or his fellowman.
5. Sexual - All created living things are sexual in nature but the uniqueness of expression of a
person„s sexuality makes it all different. The expression of a person„s emotions, attitudes,
feelings, actions and thoughts in sexual activity best exemplifies his uniqueness from animals.
Generally, it is believed that
we have in a group based
on our perception of others.
And that is why to improve
communication in a group
it is important to develop
the perception of an
individual in the group.
Johari window model is
based upon two things – to
acquire the trust of others
by revealing your
information to them and by
learning about yourself
through feedback by
others.
Open Area or Arena This area or pane is called open area because the information in this
pane about the behavior, feelings, emotions about the person is known to that person itself
as well as the other members in this group.
Blindspot or BlindSelf Blindspot is the area in which the certain information on your personality
is known to others but that information is not known to you. In simple terms, other people may
interpret your personality different than you might have expected. For efficient
communication, this area must be reduced. One way to do it is through feedback that you
get from other members in the group.
Hidden Area or Hidden Self Hidden area is the information that you hide from others. Here,
the information is known to you but the others are unknown to this information. The reason for
this may be the information might be personal to you so that you are reluctant to share it with
others. This includes secrets, past experiences, feelings, etc. Many people keep their
information private and do not share it with others.
Unknown Areas or Unknown Self In this area, the information is unknown to you as well as the
others. Generally, certain feelings, talents, information, etc fall in this area. The reason for this
might be some traumatic experience in the past about a particular event or experiences
which might be unknown for your ever. The person, as well as the group, is unaware about
this till he or she discovers it. One way to reduce this area is through open communication.
Self-management Sequence – 5 Steps To Success
Behavior
Your actions need to work for you, not against you. Behavior is what we do, but also
what we don‟t do. Make sure you understand that inaction is also a behavior you can
control. Behavior means our actions. How we act, what we do, each moment of each day
will determine whether or not we will be successful that moment or that day in everything
that we do.
Feelings
Every action we take is first filtered through our feelings. How we feel about something will
always determine or affect what we do and how well we do it. It is inevitable. You need to
learn to love the process. How do you do that? Through your attitude. When you really learn
to enjoy growing, seeing the challenges and overcoming them, you will finally stop doubting
everything. You will stop holding yourself back, you will be able to leave your comfort zone,
which is the only reason you still are where you are.
Attitude
Your attitudes are the perspective from which you view life. Some people seem to have a
good attitude about most things. Some seem to have a bad attitude about everything. But
when you look closer, you will find that most of us have a combination of attitudes – some
good, some not so good.
Attitude is the perspective from which we see our lives. It is also created, controlled or
influenced by our beliefs. Our attitude play a very important part in helping us become
successful. Good attitudes are created, controlled, or influenced entirely by our beliefs.
Beliefs
What we believe about anything will determine out attitudes about it, create our feelings,
direct our actions, and influence us to do well or poorly, or succeed or fail. “Belief” does not
require that something is the way we believe it is. It only requires us to believe that it is. Your
belief system is ultimately set up by your programming. If you‟ve been told that you can‟t
become an astronaut when you were young numerous times, you will believe that it is
impossible for you now. Thus it follows that in order to change your beliefs, you need to
change your brain programming. Beliefs are the constants in our minds. They are hard to
establish, but also hard to get rid off. Unfortunately, like I said above, most of us need to do
the latter.
Programming
We believe that we are programmed to believe. Our conditioning from the day we were
born has created, reinforced, and nearly permanently cemented most of what we believe
about ourselves and what we believe about most of what goes on around us. Whether the
programming was right or wrong, true or false, the result of it is what we believe. It is our
programming that sets up our beliefs, and the chain reaction follows. What we believe
determine our attitudes, affects our behavior, and determines our success or failure thus:
