Contemporary Art Forms and National Filipino Artists. Read carefully and do the

within 2 weeks.

A. Various Contemporary Art Forms


Contemporary Art Forms
• It is conceptual, innovative, expressive, and experimental.
• It allows the viewers to participate in the experience and is urged to validate his/her own beliefs
and feelings.
• It evokes more intense emotions from its spectators.

Salient Features of Contemporary Art Forms

• Most of the art forms are based on abstract expressionism.


• It leaves of the mark of the curator who makes them.
• The means or instruments to make the works of contemporary are changing and new technologies
are used day by day.
• It emphasizes in the expressions of the self, emotions and manifests the inclusion of societal issues
and concerns.
• It can incorporate other forms of arts, blending different media and techniques which paved way
to the so-called integrative arts.

Integrative Arts – refers to the interdisciplinary art, art study, development, production, display,
or creative creation of work that makes full use of art to produce a work for a particular public.
Integrative art is a clear reflection of contemporary art forms.
▪ Choreography – it is an arrangement or design for dance movements usually accompanied by
music.
Examples: Festival Dances

▪ Musical Instruments – any tool that produces sounds. Integration of arts is seen through the
intricate designs of musical instruments representing visual arts.
▪ Literary and Musical Composition – literary works are written works meant to be read while
musical compositions on the other hands are not written but notated.

▪ Visual Designs and Applied Arts Combined – it is a composition or layout of any art elements.
Its purpose it’s not only to amuse the audience but also to let them enjoy its function as a product
of art.

▪ Theatrical Performance – this pertains to a public presentation of a dramatic or musical
entertainment. Contemporary theatrical performance is experimental, innovative, controversial,
and interdisciplinary, going beyond other disciplines like psychology, social and political sciences.

▪ Cinema – it is the most popular of the art forms; yet, it is the youngest of all. Its characteristics
are the same with theater except that it is not a live performance.

B. The Filipino Artists

Artist – one who professes and practices an imaginative art. In the past, the artist’s role was well-
defined and that is to create something that uplifted the spirit, something aesthetically pleasing
and entertaining.

Role of Filipino Artists
1. The Filipino artist gives his opinion about the culture of his time.
2. The Filipino artist is a persuader, attempting to sway the viewer to his or her side.
3. The Filipino artist has become a social critic.
4. The Filipino artist has also become an advocate for what she or he believes in.
5. The Filipino is versatile.

• The Personal – the artist expresses what he or she feels.


• The Social – the artist expresses with he or she sees around him/the artist expresses which he or
she sees around him/her.
• The Physical – the artist finds a need to create something not only pleasing to look at but something
useful as well.
• The Immaterial - the artist gives form to the immaterial, the hidden truth of the universe, and a
spiritual force that inhabits the world.

The Filipino Artist


Before the Philippine contemporary art era, a few notable women were able to find access into the
world of arts.
• Anita Magsaysay-Ho
• Nena Saguil
• Purita Kalaw-Ledesma

But things have changed in the Philippine contemporary art era as many women pave the way for
others to assert their own identity on contribute and social realism.
• Imelda Cajipe-Endaya – Main figure for Filipino Feminist and National Liberation Movements in
Philippine Arts.
• Brenda V. Fajardo – Known for her artworks that are typically inspired from Filipino Folklore,
Legends, and Mythology.
• Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi – Filipino Visual Artist based in France. She is considered a pioneer in
Philippine printmaking.

Order of National Artists - the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who have
made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts, namely: Music, Dance,
Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film, Broadcast Arts, and Architecture and Allied Arts. The order is
jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center
of the Philippines and conferred by the President of the Philippines upon recommendation by both
institutions.

Qualifications to be a National Artist


1. Living artists who have been Filipino citizens for the last ten years prior to nomination as well
as those who have died after the establishment of the award in 1972 but were Filipino citizens at
the time of their death;
2. Artists who have helped build a Filipino sense of nationhood through the content and form of
their artworks;
3. Artists who have distinguished themselves by pioneering in a mode of creative expression or
style, making an impact on succeeding generations of artists;
4. Artists who have created a significant body of works/or have consistently displayed excellence
in the practice of their art form, in reaching artistic expression or style;
5. Artists who enjoy broad acceptance through prestigious national and/or international
recognition, awards in prestigious national and/or international events, critical acclaim and or
reviews of their works and/or respect and esteem from peers within an artistic discipline.

Benefits of Being a National Artist


• The rank and title of National Artist, as proclaimed by the President of the Philippines;
• The Insignia of National Artist and a Citation;
• The lifetime emolument, material and physical benefits comparable in value to those received by
the highest officers of lands such as:
a. A cash reward of 100,000 pesos net of taxes, for leaving awardees;
b. A cash reward of 75,000 pesos net of taxes, for posthumous awardees, payable to legal heir/s;
c. A monthly life pension, medical and hospitalization benefits;
d. Life insurance coverage for awardees who are still insurable;
e. A state funeral and burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani;

V. Guided Generalization

A lot has happened in the contemporary art scene since its onset. Most of them are now collaborative
and community-based, fostering values of camaraderie, cooperation, and even pride of a place.

Philippine Arts today is active and vibrant because of the Filipino Artists’ talents, creativity, skills, and
perseverance, even in times, of chaos it drives them to pursue their dreams which has been beneficial
not just for them but for the development of the whole country.
