THE MEASURING TOOLS

Going back to the history of measurement, we all know that

parts of the human body were the first measuring tools. But because
of some disadvantages, different measuring tools were invented.
Let’s look at the short history of some of the popular measuring tools
today.

RULER – a tool used to measure length. The first ruler was a

measuring rod made of copper alloy and dated from 2650BC. This
was found by German Assyriologist Eckhard Unger. The first folding
ruler was invented by Anton Ullrich in 1851 and the first flexible ruler
was made in 1902 by Frank Hunt.

WEIGHING SCALE – a device used to measure the mass of an

object. The earliest recorded use of weighing scale was in the year
2400BC in the Indus River Valley. In 1878BC, the earliest known

center-beam scale used by Egyptians was created. The first known

use of bismar scales (unequal arms) was in 440BC. In 1170AD,
Richard Salter of England created the first spring scale.

GRADUATED CYLINDER – a tool used to measure the volume of

liquids. This tool was invented by Albert Einstein in the year 1909.

PROTRACTOR – a tool used to measure angles. Something that

can be described as a protractor or a forerunner of a protractor is
found in a tomb of an ancient Egyptian architect Kha, dating around
1400 BC. The first real protractors were made more than five
hundred years ago but the inventor is not known. In 1810, Joseph
Huddart designed more sophisticated versions of a protractor for
calculating ship position at sea. This protractor was named three-arm
protractor because it had a circular scale and three arms.
5
Learning Module for Junior High School Mathematics

CLOCK– a device used to measure time. There is a range of

duration timers, a well-known example being the hourglass. Water
clocks, along with the sundials, are possibly the oldest time-
measuring instruments. A major advance occurred with the invention
of the verge escapement, which made possible the first mechanical
clocks around 1300 in Europe, which kept time with oscillating
timekeepers like balance wheels.

THERMOMETER – a tool used to measure temperature. Galileo

Galilei is often claimed to be the inventor of the thermometer but
what he invented is called thermoscope. The Italian, Santorio
Santorio (1561-1636) is generally credited with having applied a
scale to an air thermoscope at least as early as 1612 and thus is
thought to be the inventor of the thermometer as a temperature
measuring device. Santorio's instrument was an air thermometer.

SPEEDOMETER – is a gauge that measures and displays the

instantaneous speed of a vehicle. Charles Babbage is credited with
creating an early type of speedometer, which was usually fitted to
locomotives. The electric speedometer was invented by the Croatian
Josip Belušićin 1888 and was originally called avelocimeter.

Direct measurement is made when we use some common measuring tools to

measure an object’s length, weight, volume, time, angle, temperature, and rate or speed.
Since there may be errors when applying the methods of direct measurements and there are
limits in the degree of accuracy of the measuring tools, the results of all direct
measurements are an approximation only. According to the Oxford Dictionary,
approximation is a value or quantity that is nearly but not exactly correct.
As shown in Figure 1, Emman uses a ruler that only has cm markings to measure the
width of a privilege card. Emman finds out that it lies between 5cm and 6cm, but it is closer
to 5cm. So he says that the width of the privilege card is about 5cm.
As shown in Figure 2, Lito tries to measure the same privilege card with a ruler with
different markings. Each centimeter is divided into 10 equal parts. He finds that the width of
the privilege card lies between 5.1cm and 5.2cm, but it is closer to 5.2cm. So he says that
the width of the privilege card is about 5.2cm.
Who do you think has the correct measurement?

6
Learning Module for Junior High School Mathematics

Notice that Emman used a ruler in

which the distance between the
successive markings is 1 cm. We can say
that Emman’s measurement is correct if
rounded to the nearest centimeters.
Similarly, since the distance
between the successive markings on
Lito’s ruler is 0.1cm, we can also say that
his measurement is correct if rounded to Figure 1
the nearest tenths.
But if we are looking for the real
measurement of the width of the privilege
card, they are both wrong because it is
not equal to 5cm or 5.2cm. This is the
importance of using the word
“approximately”.
Whose measurement is more
accurate? Lito’s measurement is more
accurate than Emman’s measurement Figure 2
because his ruler is more precise than
Emman’s. Meaning, the more precise the measuring tool we use, the more accurate results
we can obtain.
In approximating measures of quantities, we must consider the appropriate unit to be
used. Using other units of measure to describe a quantity gives either very small or very
large number value. It becomes difficult to estimate the magnitude of the quantity if
inappropriate units are used. Here are some examples of different quantities and the
appropriate units to be used:
APPROPRIATE UNIT APPROPRIATE UNIT
QUANTITY QUANTITY
OF MEASURE OF MEASURE
Distance between two Feet and Inches,
Miles or kilometers Height of a Person
cities Centimeters
Weight of a Person Pounds or kilograms Capacity of Milk Bottle Liters
Area of a Football Square meter or
Size of Paper Inches or Centimeters
Field Square feet
Body Temperature Celsius Life Span/Age Years
Speed of a Vehicle km/h Measure of an Angle Degree
Duration Seconds/Minutes/Hours Depth of Ocean Meters or Feet

Examples:
1) Choose the most sensible approximate length of the following:
a) lizard 19cm, 19mm, 19m, 19km
b) mouse 100m, 100dm, 100mm, 100cm
Answers:
a) The answer is 19cm.
Explanation: 19mm is less than the size of an adult’s thumb. 19m is too long for the
length of a lizard because 1m is approximately the length from your shoulder to your
fingertips when your arm is outstretched. 1km is equivalent to 1000m.
b) The answer is 100mm.
Explanation: 100cm is approximately 3 rulers. 10dm is equal to 100cm and 1m is
equal to 100cm
2) Choose the most sensible approximate weight of the following:
a) bowling 7260kg, 7260g, 7260mg
b) bunch of broccoli 6kg, 6g, 6mg
Answers:
a) The answer is 7260g.
Explanation: 7260kg is the approximate weight of 140 adults. 7260mg is the
approximate weight of 15 capsules.
b) The answer is 6kg.
Explanation: 6 g is equal to 12 pieces of 500mg capsule and 6mg is less than the
weight of 1 capsule.
3) Choose the most sensible approximate volume of the following:
a) water in an Olympic-size swimming pool
2 500 000 L 2 500 000 mL
Answer: 2 500 000 L.
Explanation:2 500 000mL is equal to 2500 bottles of 1 liter coke. Approximately 208
liters of water can fill a drum. 2 500 000mL is approximately 12 drums only.
4) Determine the approximate and the exact time between Nov. 12, 2014 and May 6,
2015.
Solution:
Approximate Time: 18 days before December + 6 days after April = 24 days
Counting the number of months: (Dec., Jan. Feb. March,
April)
5 months and 24 days
5(30days) + 24days = 174 days

8
Learning Module for Junior High School Mathematics
Exact Time: November 30 days (30 – 12) = 18 days March 31 days
December 31 days April 30 days
January 31 days May 6 days
February 28 days
18 + 31 + 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 6 = 175 days
5) Approximate the measure of the given angle on the right:
Answer: Using a protractor, the measure of the angle is
approximately 45
6) Choose the most sensible approximate temperature of the
following:

5) Approximate the measurement of the angles below:

a) b) c)

6) Choose the most sensible approximate temperature of the following:

a) freezer compartment 45C 20C -5C
b) morning in Tagaytay City 45C 30C 15C
7) A car leaves Town A at 6:30am and travels to Town B which is 210km away. The car
stops at a gasoline station for 30 minutes and reaches Town B at 10:30am. What is the
approximate speed of the car?
II. Give the approximate measurement of the following objects by using the appropriate
measuring tool:
1) Length of the blackboard
2) Weight of a pineapple
3) Weight of 5 notebooks
4) Length of the door
5) Volume of used mineral water

Approximation - is a value or quantity that is nearly but not exactly correct.

A direct measurement is made when we use some common measuring tools
to measure an object’s length, weight, volume, time, angle, temperature and rate or
speed.
All measurements are not exact and are approximations only.

In the following story, the units of the underlined quantities are not
appropriate. Express each of these quantities with more appropriate unit inside
the parenthesis that follows.

(The first one has been completed as an example.)

A huge turtle Teddy was going to have a race of 40 000cm (400m) with
a small rabbit Rachel. Teddy had an approximate weight of 30 000g( ) while
Rachel had an approximate weight of 1kg. To be fair, Rachel let Teddy go first and
promised that she would only start after 1 200sec( ). However, it started
raining heavily after Teddy had left for 0.05hr ( ). By the time Rachel started,
her hair had already absorbed approximately 0.0001m3( ) of rain water and
she found it difficult to run. As a result, she just failed to catch up with Teddy and
lost the race by a distance of approximately 0.001km( )

Hint: Here are some conversions between some commonly used units.
1m = 100cm 1hr = 60min 1L = 1000mL
1km = 1000m 1min = 60sec
1kg = 1000g 1L=0.001m3

Approximation is like making an assumption. You are thinking of something that is

close to the truth but not the exact truth. How will you reflect on this quotation: “Do

PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING Worksheet

BUNJEE JUMPING
Bungee jumping, also spelt bungy jumping, is an activity that involves a
person jumping from a great height while connected to a large elastic cord.
The launching pad is usually erected on a tall structure such as a building or
crane, a bridge across a deep ravine, or on a natural geographic feature
such as a cliff. It is also possible to jump from a type of aircraft that has the
ability to hover above the ground, such as a hot-air-balloon or helicopter.
The thrill comes from the free-falling and the rebound.

One day, a group of friends try to do this activity to approximate the

extension of the cord when they jump. Mike whose age is 23 weighs 50kgs,
Emman whose age is 26 weighs 60kgs and Lito whose age is 29 weighs
55kgs. All of them jump in the same position.

Let’s Analyze

1) Who do you think will reach the lowest point and stretch the bungee cord the most
after jumping?
a) Mike b) Emman c) Lito

2) Explain your answer in number 1.

3) Who do you think will bounce back higher?

a) Mike b) Emman c) Lito

4) Explain your answer in number 3.

5) What could be the approximate length of the extended cord if it stretches by

approximately 1 meter for every 2kg weight attached to the other end and Emman is the
one jumping? Show your solution.
