Logix Hot Backup Code Generator Tool
Question
Where to download the Logix Hot Backup code generator tool (software output switching) ?
Environment
ControlLogix
CompactLogix
1756 I/O
1794 I/O
5069 I/O
Answer
IMPORTANT: The tool is not available for download and application code is handed
out of each Rockwell Automation Sales Office. Users need to be tracked and
identified in case emergency updates to the code must be distributed. An RA
technical sales contact is required for the distribution of the Hot Backup code
generator tool. Customers and Distributor will receive the tool from your local RA
technical sale contact. The tool is not for download or distributed by Tech Support.
RA Technical Sales to contact RA Commercial Engineer for the tool. A CE
Engagement Request will need to be filled out to request the tool.
Find your Rockwell Automation Sales Office using the following locator:
IMPORTANT: This Knowledgebase article supersedes the tool manual, document Hot
Backup Application Technique, Publication HIGHAV-AT001B-EN-G - Oct 2017
(attached to this AID).
Note: The tool was updated to version 4.0 on Oct 2017. See below for summary of updates.
Use previous version of the Hot Backup tool if ACD file was generated in versions 20.01, 21.00 and earlier.
Or update the ACD to v20.03 or v24 before running the Hot Backup tool.
Only one version of the tool at a time can be loaded onto a single work station
The tool supports switching of 1756 and 1794 remote I/O over Ethernet and ControlNet. 5069 is supported
over Ethernet.
Ownership switching supports 1756, 1794, and 5069 digital and analog input modules, 3rd party network
communication modules, PowerFlex Drives and Allen Bradley SMC's
The tool does not support local embedded I/O. Only remote I/O is managed.
This solution does not swap controller IP Address. Solutions for HMI communications to both controllers,
both IP Addresses, need to be implemented.
A delay of 250 milliseconds to 5 seconds will occur before the peer controller gains full control of the system.
During the switch over, outputs may temporarily revert to the values for Fault mode, in accordance with the
I/O configuration for the modules. We recommend that output hold last state during switchover when ever
possible.
The application can not use any motion control.
ONLY use 1756, 1794, and 5069 I/O modules.
1794-AENTR is supported with firmware v1.013 or greater.
Input modules that have output words should be treated and selected as output modules. These will not
support multiple owners and the secondary connections will error.
The following are NOT supported: 1747-AENTR, 1769-AENTR, 1734 Point I/O,1715 I/O.
The application supports I/O on ControlNet and Ethernet only
Each 1756 Logix processor must be in a different chassis. (If not, manual edits will be required to the
application).
CompactLogix processors with embedded I/O are Not supported! (we cannot use Hot Backup for I/O
embedded with a controller)
Input and Output modules must be in a remote chassis
Direct connections to output modules must be used
Combination Input/Output devices need to be configured in the same manner as Output devices
Ethernet modules do not swap I/P addresses

Your HMI must be able to handle the switchover to the other chassis. This application does not handle
HMI communications.
You can use RSLinx Alias Topics to automatically switchover the OPC data feed to the HMI
You can create a copy of each HMI screen, one for each chassis
This application does not sync any process control data between the chassis. This is up to the system
integrator to ensure the peer controller is ready to control the process after a switchover.
