The name of interviewee is Bernardita E. Dalumpines, born on August 20, 1975. Before
she got married and move to the city to live with her husband, she lives at a country side. Their
life at the country side(bukid) was simple but poor. Her parents got married early so her mother
also gave birth early, they’re ten siblings, and she's the third child. She has many responsibilities
at home, back then, her Lola would always wake them up before the sunrise. She would
prepare food for breakfast, there was no gas stove, only woods and coconut husk to cook. They
have their own rice field and they need to use wooden round hammer and a mortar to pound
the rice in order to remove the hush and bran of rice so the rice could be edible, for the reason
that there are no rice mill machine before.
In wedding celebration before, the relatives are present even they are old or a senior
and their home are far, they would show up to the celebration to help the bride and groom,
they would offer coconut wine, rice, and money, but now this tradition are slowly disappearing.
Her childhood memories are full of difficulties and hardship, she felt like she was a maid at her
own home because she do all do works, she remembers that her father would say, "this should
be done before I get home" before leaving. When going to school she and her siblings would
walk for thirty minutes and pass through a sugar-cane field to arrived at school. Their food for
snack and lunch are crops that they'd plant such as sweet potato, banana, cassava root. Their
rice and dried fish are pack only with banana leaves. They would work and harvest sugarcane,
so they can have a salary and that would be their school allowance. In addition, they would do
the “mano po” gesture of touching the back of the hand of an elder lightly on ones forehead
everyday when the clock strike at 6 o’clock. The main reason for this tradition is because they
gives high value to the family.
Miss Bernardita compares the past and present, she said that "there are big difference
before and now at the present, the difference are children before knows responsibilities and
works at a young age, and they would work hard to get something they want, and even though
they don't have money before, they are happy that the only food they have are fruits and
vegetables". She look towards the future that her children will be able to finish their studies to
get a better job, so that her children won’t experience what she experience before, to quit
school to work and had a little salary. Her advice to the future generations is to treat their
parents well, “One day, you are gonna be far away from home and just want to talk to them all
the time. Use your time with them now while you can.”, she said.
Insight:
From my point of view, listening to the interviewee’s experiences made me relize how
hard life must be before than now. Tecnologies and machines help us to do work easily,
imagine without technology we wouldn’t have computers, laptops, and smartphones that
enable us to communicate, and even have our class online. Also, I notice that there foods are
freshly picked and healthy like fruits and vegetables, whereas now we have processed and
preservative food and our usual meal has meat. Kids before gather in the streets or the
neighborhood to play games or maybe watch tv from their neighboor. On the other hand, some
kids today won’t go outside because they have their smartphones to play and watch.
As a generation z, we’re fortunate that we have not experience what our elders experience
before. Although they had a great childhood memories, still their life is hard. Change is
constant, the world evolves, and we humans strive to survive. To us future generation, so what
we fail? So what we make mistake? This is the real life, we gain courage to live our lives in spite
of how difficult things may become, we learn, and we grow. And as what Micheal Jackson had
sang, “Heal the world, make it a better place”, now it's really time for us to 'heal the world. This
song inspires me to help anyone who needs help. Let the love in our heart flow for the needy
and the less fortunate. Let's not discriminate. Let's do our best to make the world a happy,
secure place and life a joyous experience for all.
