Perennialism

The philosophy of perennialism according to the article from the Oregon state university is “one

of the philosophies that focuses on the student's essential perspective. The aim for this

philosophy is to seek the truth which is constant, never changing in the future.” The main

concern of perennialists are dealing with the importance of mastering the content and

development of reasoning skills. The more changes happened in the learning process the more

they stay the same. Skills are obtained from very basic activity such as reading, listening, reading

and writing. Those skills are really helpful for the students to be able to learn the higher level of

subjects (literature, art, philosophy and etc). Some proponents of this philosophy are Robert

Maynard Hutchins and Mortimer Adler.

Introduction of Progressivism

Progressivism is a philosophy where the key of learning is by thinking and questioning. I believe

this philosophy represents my teaching. Some proponents of this philosophy are John Dewey and

William Kilpatrick. In progressivism, the center of learning is not the materials nor the teacher.

The students are the center of learning. The progressivist believed that the process of learning is

happening when the students are thinking by themselves. Not by the help from the teacher nor

the other students.

Critical Thinking Process as a Sign

When the classroom is responding to the teacher by saying "okay", "alright I get it" "fine" every

time the teacher asks them ‘how was it?’ It is a sign that the process of learning is not happening.

However when the students are questioning "why..", "yes, however I still don't understand why

…" It is a sign that the process of learning is happening. The critical thinking process is

happening inside their mind, it encourages the students to seek more information. The more

questions they asked in the learning process, the more knowledge they will get from the process

of learning. The main task for teachers in the classroom is not as the source of information. The

teachers are more likely as a facilitator to facilitate the students in the process of learning.

Experience in teaching using Progressivism philosophy

In my experience when I teach English in an online classroom using discord, one of the chat and

voice platforms for gamers actually, I assigned them to groups randomly and I asked them to

have a discussion in a group. Only the teacher can see all the group discussion but the outside

member from the group can't. There I can assess their performance, collaboration in a group and

also I can encourage the students who passively join the discussion. They can have many

resources from the internet as long as the source is reliable. Turns out, it doesn't work well,

because the students are having the habit of waiting for the instructions for the teachers and

almost never questioning why. I believe that there is no such thing as a small price for salvation.

As long as I already set the course, know the goals. I will definitely make a change. The

traditional, maybe still relevant in some cases but the progressivism is more appealing.

Based on my experience, the students are more likely getting on the viral thing quickly. For

example the recent popular games called the among us. It went viral a few months ago. The

concept of the “Among Us” game is that the players are divided into two teams. The first one as

the astronauts and the other one as the impostors. The goals for the astronauts are to finish the

task and seek for the imposters, while the imposters' main job is to kill all the astronauts without

being caught. I found a video from the unknown showing his/her math teacher using the concept

of a video, Among Us, as a test. The video can be seen in the references. From my own

perspective having students to work on something unique and different will encourage them to

learn more effectively. Using the gamification approach, the teachers are supposed to make more

creative learning for students. Another example of a gamification approach I used in my teaching

is answering my question as quickly as possible. Before this activity, I asked them to read some

resources for about five to ten minutes. Whenever they can answer my questions correctly, I give

them points and make a leaderboard for them. This kind of activity is really effective for them

because it’s very competitive. The points, they acquired from the activity, can be used for some

privileges such as additional time to submit the assignments or task, or the opportunity to ask a

clue to the teacher when they have a quiz.
