Compound Words Lesson Plan
Content Standard Addressed: The students will learn the concept of compound words, how two words can
come together and make one. They will learn that not all words can be put together to make a compound
word. By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to give examples of multiple compound words and
identify some from a list using pictures and words as well.
ISTE: Empowered Learner: 1C: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their
practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

X Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.
☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The lesson created supports and enhances the learning experience
because BrainPOP Jr. allows the students to engage with the lesson by playing games and doing different
activities. The lesson offers different representation such as teacher first teaching the lesson, then having the
students use BrainPOP jr. and lastly having the students use what they learned and create sentences.
Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will guide the students on what they need to do. First the teacher
will assign all students to take the easy quiz on compound words to see what they know so far. They will not
be graded on that one. Then the teacher will assign them to watch the introductory video and do the activity
attached with the lesson. The students will follow instruction given by teacher and demonstrate
understanding of the lesson. Prior to the students going on BrainPOP Jr. the teacher will introduce the lesson
in class by teaching the students about compound words. The teacher will spend at least 2 weeks reviewing
and practicing with the students. The teacher will extend student learning to a higher learning level by having
create their own compound words and use them in a proper sentence. At the end of the 2 weeks, the
students will be prompted to go back to BrainPOP Jr. and take the hard quiz as an assessment. The teacher
will then review assessments and provide feedback accordingly to each student 1 on 1.
Reflective Practice: The lesson and activities that I have in place will improve my student’s knowledge of
compound words. They will be able to define what compound words are, identify them, create their own and
use them in a proper sentence.
