ENGLISH- Inferring the Meaningof Words with

Affixes Using Context Clues
An affix is an element that is added at the beginning of
or at the end of a word to form a new word. An affix that
is added at the beginning of a word is called a prefix (e.g.
dis+ comfort = discomfort) while an affix that is added at
the end of a word is called a suffix (e.g. build + ing =
building).
Affixes may be added only at the beginning or only at
the end of the words, or they may also be added to both
the beginning and the end of the same word at the same
time (e.g. inter + nation + al = international).
The original word that can be added with affixes is
called a base or root word. For example, the base word
beauty won’t be spelled “beautyful” if added with the
suffix ful. Instead, it changes the “y” to “i” before adding
the suffix, so that it becomes perfectly “beautiful.”
New words formed by affixes also acquire a new
meaning. But the affixes attached to them carry their own
special meaning which can help you figure out the meaning
of the new word. So, if you see the prefix “im” and “un” in
words like impossible and unforgettable and you know that
the affixes carry the meaning of “being the opposite of
something,” you can be certain that they now mean as “not
possible” and “not forgettable,” which are the opposite
meaning of the original words. To get you started, below
are some of the most common affixes which carry a special
meaning:
PREFIX MEANING EXAMPLES
anti- against antivirus, antibacterial
bi two bicycle, bilateral
dis opposite of / not, apart dishonest, disconnect
im opposite of / not impossible, immortal
in opposite of/ not inappropriate, incapable
mis wrong mistreat, misjudge
pre before preschool, pretest
re again rewrite, review
sub below, under subway, submarine
un opposite of/ not unclear, unknown

SUFFIX MEANING EXAMPLES

able Having the ability or manageable,
quality understandable
er Someone or something worker, computer
carrying out an action
ic Having the heroic, romantic
characteristic of
ing Happening at present working, running
ion State of being or process action, elimination
ful Having the quality or wonderful, hopeful
full of
less without fruitless, tireless
ly in the manner of quickly, happily
ness Having the quality kindness, madness
ous Full of adventurous, joyous
Context clues are the surrounding words used in the same
sentence or nearby sentences that give you an idea what the
unfamiliar word means. These clues may give a synonym,
an antonym, an illustration, or simply some examples of an
event.
• Affixes are word parts that are added to a base word to
make a new word. They carry their own special
meaning and they can change the meaning of the
original word to which they are added.
• There are two types of affixes: prefixes and suffixes.
• Prefixes are affixes that are added at the beginning of the
base or root word while suffixes are those that are
added at the end of the base or root word.
• A prefix and a suffix may be added to one base word at the
same time.
• To unlock the meaning of new and unfamiliar
words, context clues may be used.
• Context clues are hints implied in the sentence/s
where they appear. They help the reader understand
unfamiliar words without the use of a dictionary.

MATHEMATICS- Using Divisibility Rules for 4, 8, 11 & 12
A divisibility rule is a simple way of determining whether
a given number is divisible by another number. It can be used
to quickly find the factors of given numbers. “Divisible by
another number” means a number can be divided by another
number without any remainder. Here are examples of
numbers that are divisible by 4, 8, 11 and 12.
Numbers Divisible by
4 8 11 12
28 32 33 48
812 96 242 180
124 176 495 240
2020 200 253 732
How do we know if a number is divisible by 4, 8, 11 or 12?
• Divisibility Rules for 4
A number is divisible by 4 if the number formed by its last
two digits is divisible by 4. If its last two digits are both
zeros, then it is also divisible by 4.
• Divisibility Rules for 8
A number is divisible by 8 if the number formed by its last
three digits is divisible by 8. If the number ends in three
zeros, then it is also divisible by 8.
• Divisibility Rules for 11
A number is divisible by 11 if the difference of the sum
of the odd-positioned digits (starting from the left)
and the sum of the even-positioned digits (starting
from the left) is zero or if it is a multiple of eleven.
• Divisibility Rules for 12
A number is divisible by 12 if the sum of its digits is
divisible by 3, and the number formed by its last two
digits is divisible by 4.
➢ Let us find out if 264 is divisible by 4, 8, 11 or 12.
Divisible by 4;
The number formed by the last two digits of 264 is 64. 64 is
divisible by 4, because 64 ÷ 4 = 16. Therefore, 264 is divisible by 4.
Divisible by 8;
264 has exactly three digits.
264 ÷ 8 = 33, which is a whole number.
Therefore, 264 is divisible by 8.
Divisible by 11;
264 The underlined digits are odd-positioned.
Add the odd-positioned digits: 2 + 4 = 6
264 The underlined digit is even-positioned.
Subtract the sum of odd-positioned digits from the even-
positioned digits: 6 – 6 = 0. The difference is 0. Therefore, 264
is divisible by 11.
Divisible by 12;
264 is divisible by 4, because the number formed by its last
two digits can be divided by 4. The sum of the digits of 264 is 2
+ 6 + 4 = 12, which is divisible by 3. Therefore, 264 is divisible by
12. This means that 264 is divisible by 4, 8, 11 and 12.
Activity 1. Using the divisibility rules, write True on the blank if
the number on the left is a common factor to the numbers on the
right column. If not, write False.

1. 4 192 and 670

2. 8 432 and 864
3. 11 462 and 330
4. 12 240 and 500
5. 12 480 and 960
Activity 2. Shade the box of 4, 8, 11 or 12 if they are common
factors of the given numbers. Copy the table with your answers
in your notebook.
1) 154 and 132 4 8 11 12
2) 48 and 144 4 8 11 12
3) 36 and 60 4 8 11 12
4) 44 and 88 4 8 11 12
5) 32 and 64 4 8 11 12
Activity 3. How do you use divisibility rules for 4, 8, 11, and
12 in finding the common factors? Supply the missing
terms below.
A number is divisible by (1.) if the last two digits are zero (0).
If the number formed by the last (2.) _____digits of a given
number is divisible by 8, then the original number is divisible by
8. If a number ends in (3.) zeros, then it is also
divisible by 8.
A number is divisible by 11 if the (4.) of the sum of
the odd-positioned digits and the sum of those in even-
positioned digits, counted from right to left is 0 or divisible
by 11.
A number is divisible by 12 if the sum of its digits is divisible
by 3 and the number formed by its last two digits is divisible
by (5.) _____.

SCIENCE- Changes in Matter and Its Effect in the Environment

Changes in matter can cause a good or bad effect on the
environment. Composting, recycling, and the use of technology are
some examples of the good effects of the changes in materials.
Composting is a way of decomposing plant or animal matter into
fertilizer. Recycling helps lessen garbage by reusing them like
plastic, Styrofoam, old tires, and paper.
Evaporation and condensation are forms of physical
change in matter. Evaporation is a crucial part of the water
cycle. Water from all areas on Earth will not be recycled if they
will not evaporate into water vapor as clouds in the sky.
Condensation is important in transforming water vapor to
droplets water stored in clouds. Some changes in matter may
result in negative effects like pollution, destruction of habitat,
and loss of lives. Improper disposal of garbage, harmful
chemicals and human waste can cause changes. It can pollute
air, land and water. Burning of garbage materials releases
dangerous toxic chemicals that contribute to the greenhouse
effect and global warming. Smoke from the burning of oil and
coal and wood can also cause air pollution. Cutting down trees
is also harmful to our environment. It affects the quality of air
that we breathe. It causes a rapid change in the temperature
and in turn changes the weather patterns, which leads to other
environmental concerns. Throwing into the river the
detergents used for washing the clothes makes the river
become polluted because these contain toxic substance.
Polluted water kills living organisms like fish and water
plants. When land is dumped with garbage, the land becomes
polluted, if this happens, the polluted land will serve as the
breeding places for pests that carry germs, hence dangerous to
human health.
We have to do our share in maintaining a healthy
environment. We must avoid too much use of electricity and
gasoline. We must also avoid burning rubber tires and
plastics. We must avoid practices that will produce acid rain,
increase global temperature, or deplete the ozone layer. No
matter how big or small contribution you give, what matters
most is you’ve made a difference for our environment.

Q1 WEEK 4 MODULE 4
ENGLISH-Inferring the Meaning of Blended Words Using
Context Clues
Blending refers to the process of joining a part of one word
and a part of another to form a new word with a new
meaning. Blended words are usually created in one of two
ways:
1.By adding the first part of the first word to the second part
of the second word.
Examples: smoke + fog = smog
chill + relax = chillax
2.By combining the beginning of the two
words
Examples: motor + pedal = moped
cybernetic + organism = cyborg
Other examples of blended words are:
emoticon - (emotion + icon)
infotech - (information + technology)
frenemy- (friend + enemy)
In inferring or “guessing” the meaning of unfamiliar
blended word, you can look for context clues in the sentence
where the blended word is used. Context clues are hints that a
writer provides to help the readers get the meaning of a
difficult or unusual word in a sentence. The clue may appear
within the same sentence where the word is used, or it may be
found in the next sentence. Context clues may be in the form
of a synonym (repeat context clue), an antonym (contrast
context clue), an explanation (definition context clue), or a
specific example (example context clue).
Let us try the examples below:
1.I need to chillax due to my hard days. A beach resort is the
best place to take a rest.
Rest is the context clue. It has the same meaning (synonym)
with the blended word chill and relax (chillax).

2.My brother is a workaholic who never takes time off, while

my friend is a lazy fellow who always plays gadgets.
A learner could infer that the word workaholic means a person
who is always working because the word lazy used to
describe the friend shows an opposite meaning (antonym). In
addition, the word while signals a shift in thought which is not
the same as the first.
Activity 1. Match Column A with Column B. In your
notebook, write only the letter.
A B
1.camcorder a. television + broadcast
2.telecast b. global + English
3.bionic c. glamorous + camping

FILIPINO- Pagsulat ng Isang Maikling Tula, Talatang Nagsasalaysay at

Talambuhay
Ang panulaan o tula ay isang uri ng sining at
panitikan na kilala sa malayang paggamit ng wika sa iba’t-
ibang anyo at istilo.

bawat dulo o walang tugma.
Halimbawa: O, Laura kong maganda! Lagi kang nasa isip
Di man lamang nawaglit, Dahil ika’y inibig! -J. Guinoo

• Pangalan:
• Kapanganakan: (Kailan at saan siya ipinanganak?)
• Pamilya: (Mga magulang, kapatid, asawa, anak at iba
pa?)
• Edukasyon: (Saan siya nag-aral? Kursong natapos?)
• Trabaho: (Saan siya nagtatrabaho?)
• Mga Hamon at Tagumpay: (Hamon sa buhay? at Paano
ito hinarap?
Gawain 1. Sumulat ng isa o dalawang saknong na tula tungkol sa
paksang nais mo gamit ang isa sa mga uri ng tula. (5pts.)
Gawain 2. Isulat ang iyong sariling talambuhay. (10pts.)

SCIENCE- Designing a Product Out of Local and Recyclable

Materials
Waste Management refers to the practice of proper waste
disposal. Waste refers to used or consumed products or materials. A
very good example of this is garbage. The kind of waste management
we follow nowadays is the 5Rs in Waste Management (Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Repair).
The ultimate goal of the 5Rs to waste management is to free
planet Earth from any kind of garbage’s situation referred to as
zero waste. Each “R” focuses on a way to achieve “zero waste”.
Designing a product out of local recyclable solid and/or liquid
materials in making useful products is an application of waste
management. With this technique, the 5Rs in Waste Management
will also be applied, which is more on recycling.
Recycling the materials to a new product design, reduce waste
as much as possible. Non-biodegradable materials such as plastic,
metals, cans and rubbers will be reduced through reusing and
recycling. Recycling is one of the simple things that you can do
which results to a positive impact for the environment. Recycling
is important to the natural environment and us. We must act fast
as the amount of waste we create is increasing all the time. Almost
all materials can be recycled depending upon its physical
condition – wet or dry, whole or broken/cut to pieces, fragile or
durable, among others. Items that can be recycled include paper,
glass bottles/jars, plastics, clothes, etc. Meanwhile, items that can’t
be recycled include plastic wraps, ceramics, plastic bags, etc.
