How to find Research gap
Literature Reviews are considered important for numerous reasons:
1) They allow you to know just WHAT is out there;
2) They allow you to demonstrate mystery over a subject;
3) They allow you to locate your area of research within the literature,
such as “how does this fit in with everything else that has been written
on this subject?”
It is important to know what other researchers have found in regard to
the same or similar questions, what theories have been put forward
and what gap exit in the relevant body of knowledge

How to make your manuscript
Attractive

Targeted audience (Editors, Reviewers and researchers)

Title, Abstract, Conclusion Introduction Body of the paper
Something from your own pocket!
Able to use your OWN expert judgment on certain critical points
● Offer new explanations for discrepancies
● Future outlook
● Future challenges
● Critical Evaluation
Expectation of reader:
• The authors of review papers are supposed to be experts in the field.
• So, they are expected to have some insight on the issues being
discussed

How to get Publish
• Criticism of Existing Studies ( Limitations and
Shortcomings)
• Point out existing work advantages and contributions
• Highlights issues which were not clear in existing
work and need further investigation (Future Work)
• You should consider theoretical and experimental
parts in reviewed papers
• Must be supported with comparison Tables and
Graphs
• The critical issues and future research sections are
the most valuable parts of your review

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 26

Relevance with other works
• Existing Review or Survey in same research area
• Contain review of up-to-date literature
• Show the Novelty or Gap
• How your Paper is different from existing studies

Writing Ethics
• Plagiarism includes
1. Using another writer’s words without proper citation
2. Using another writer’s ideas without proper citation
3. Citing a source but reproducing the exact word without
quotation marks
4. Borrowing the structure of another author’s
phrases/sentences without giving the source
5. Borrowing all or part of another student’s paper
6. Using paper-writing service or having a friend write the
paper

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 28

Why do I need to reference my work?
1. To avoid plagiarism, a form of academic theft.
2. Referencing your work correctly ensures that you give appropriate credit to the sources and authors that you
have used to complete your assignment.
3. Referencing the sources that you have used for your assignment demonstrates that you have undertaken
wide-ranging research in order to create your work.
4. Referencing your work enables the reader to consult for themselves the same materials that you used.

Plagiarism
uses someone’s words, ideas or information
without referencing them, i.e. presenting them as your own.
is a very serious academic offence and leads to severe
penalties.

Title of Research Article
• Looks trivial but not so Extremely Important
-It can determine the number of readers that read
download your paper
-It attracts the audience from the correct field
-A good title also helps in getting priority in search
engines
It is “Summary” and “essence ” of your paper
contain 12 to 15 words
-Eye Catching (for e.g. Novel, New, Modified,
Enhanced, Improved, extended, design etc)
-Avoid use abbreviation
Tile should be given in the last when all sections
including Abstract of paper done.
How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 30
What Makes A Good Title

• Condenses the papers’s content in few words

• Capture the reader’s attention
• Differentiates the paper from other papers of the same subject area

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 31

What is Good Abstract
• Remember that Abstract is like a trailer of a movie (it gives a broader
picture of the whole article i.e. First few sentences gives Intro,
Motivation, next sentences explain Problems, Objectives, Method,
Results, Future recommendations and Conclusion).
• In short its Summary of the article explained in 150-250 words
• It gives “First Impression”
• It should be written in the last (means after completing all sections of
the article)
• It is the entry door to get into the review
• It decides whether the article pertains to the readers interests and
needs

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 32

Important Elements of Abstract

• State the primary objective of the paper

• Highlight the merits (or contribution)
• Give a conceptual idea on the method
• Describe the research design and procedures/processes employed (is it
simulation ,experimental ,survey etc.
• Give the main outcomes or results and the conclusions that might be drawn
• Include any implications for further research or application/ practice, if any

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 33

Common Mistakes in Abstracts
• Writing historical information
• The use of generic words : High, Low small big
• Storyline in Abstract not sequential (must be in a very good flow)
• Not proof read (you jumbled in your sentences by changing the
tenses )

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 34

Keywords (Backbone of Research)

• Should reflects the subject matter

• 4-6 words
• Must come out from title and abstract
• Most important for searching (People search from keywords)

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 35

Introduction
Ask these questions to yourself
• What is the Problem to be solved?
• Are there any existing solutions?
• Which is the Best among existing solution?
• What is the main limitation?
• What is your idea to overcome the limitation?
• What do you hope to achieve? How is your solution better than
others?

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 36

Introduction
• Most Difficult one in the paper
• General introduction of your research field
• More specific introduction about your work (more precise) like a cone
• The motivations and objectives
• Contribution of the paper (most likely appears in the last para of
introduction)
• Organization of the paper

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 37

Writing Sequence of Introduction
• Start with “General” overview simple to understand for non-experts
• To position your article into previous research
• Followed by compact, focused LR (Literature Review)
• Case build-up definition of the problem specific references
• Highlight the inadequacies (loop holes) (or flaws) of previous work
• To establish “GAP”, “PROBLEM”, ”SHORTCOMINGS” in the literature
• It allows you to suggest (filled the gap) with some new concept at the
End
• State your proposed idea solutions, research question
• Justify the importance if your work.

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 38

Additional Tips for Introduction
• Hypothesis and objectives must be clearly remarked at the end of the
introduction
• Highlight the contribution and importance of the paper
• Do not mix intro with results ,discussion and conclusion
• Expressions such as “Novel,” “First Time”, “First ever” and “paradigm-
changing” are not preferred
• Bottom Line you need to write the Intro in such a way that reviewer is
convinced that paper is good enough, exciting, important that could
not refuse to read the paper further
• If you achieve that goal your intro is Excellent.

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 39

Methodology
• To describe IDEA (novelty) of the work clearly
• How the idea managed to achieve the described
outcomes
• Show analysis /derivation/simulation to prove the idea
can work
• A good method section enables an interested reader
to replicate your work and obtain the same (similar)
Results
• Make a flow chart of your method (explain briefly all
variables and simulations in details)
• If others can reproduce your results (based on your
written method) then they are more likely to believe
your conclusions
• Do not repeat the details of (previously) established
methods

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 40

Results
• Most critical part of the paper
• It’s the proof or evidence of your hypothesis
• There must be a benchmark of your work with others
• To ensure your superiority are not “self-proclaimed”
• For high impact journal, results MUST SHOW certain amount of
improvement in the field old research
• Not sufficient to say this is an alternative approach/solution to the
problem
• Note that improvement not necessary in technical terms it can be
others aspect of the problem e.g. cost , efficiency, simplicity losses etc

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 41

Presenting Results
• Highlight and detail the improvement in strongest possible way
(whether its only 0.01%)
• Try to relate that improvement is due to idea or (method) solution of
your proposed
• Mention the limitations of the result if any
• Do not hide
• But do not excessively highlight them
• Careful with the choice of words not to be apologetic or self-degrading
• Find excuses for the limitations if you can

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 42

Performance Evaluation
• Graphs or figures showing the evaluation results
• High resolution of Graphs and Figures
• Correct units
• Must put Title of x-axis and y-axis
• A Comprehensive Discussion
• Highlight the positive results
• Explanation of negative results
• Statistical Analysis

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 43

Conclusion
• Its like a landed Aeroplan back to earth(Remember it’s a big art)
rather take off plan seems easy than landing.
• Introduction Line
• Summary of research problem
• Summary of solution
• Highlight the main results and achievements
• Benefits of your work (how it implies in real world problem)
• Future research directions
• Must be short well summarized and has no references
• Do not mention the research problems or ideas that you are planning
to work on (in future)

Secret Tips for Publications

• Title: interesting and new

• Relevant literature –why this research is important and what is the missing
information
• Presents new knowledge (novelty)
• Methodology clearly explained
• Professional presentation and followed guidelines to authors
• Fall under fields (s) prescribed by the journal
• Good strategy in revising manuscript
• Good English: clarity
• Prayers and Thanks to Allah

Number of Authors
• 4-6 Authors (you, main SV, Co SV, research groups)
• Its better if authors belongs from different countries
• More authors will decrease the impact of your contribution

How to Publish by Dr.R.M.Larik 51

After You Get Reviews Back
Carefully classify comments into:
◼ Unreasonable comments (e.g., misunderstanding):
⚫ Try to improve the clarity of your writing
◼ Reasonable comments
⚫ Constructive: easy to implement
⚫ Non-constructive: think about it, either argue the other way or mention weakness of your work in the paper
If paper is accepted
◼ Take the last chance to polish the paper as much as you can
◼ You’ll regret if later you discover an inaccurate statement of a typo in your published paper If paper is
rejected
◼ Digest comments and try to improve the research work and the paper
◼ Run more experiments if necessary
◼ Don’t try to please reviewers (the next reviewer might say something opposite); instead use your own
judgments and use their comments to help improve your judgments
◼ Reposition the paper if necessary (again, don’t reposition it just because a reviewer rejected your original
positioning)
