Read the following passage and answer the questions given below :
Many social work clients have significant mental and physical disabilities. Because
of these limitations, they often experience discrimination and social isolation.
The philosophy of normalization offers a powerful force in efforts to integrate
persons with disabilities into the life of the community and ensure that their lives
resemble that of the so called normal person as much as possible.
Normalization means making available to the disabled persons the conditions of
everyday life that are as close as possible to the mainstream of society. A person with
disability should be provided opportunities of work, recreation, clothing, transportation
and daily activities in ways and in an environment that closely resembles how other
citizens secure these resources.
The plea for normalization rests on the assumption that adaptive and socially
acceptable behaviour is learned and maintained because individual has been given an
opportunity to behave in conventional ways and that such behaviour has been
reinforced. Further, appropriate behaviour is more likely to be emitted and reinforced
in a normal environment.
The theoretical underpinning of the normalization philosophy are rooted in
learning theory specially concept of modeling and imitation. More importantly it is a
philosophy that recognizes the human rights - the dignity and worth of all people
regardless of appearance or physical or mental limitation.
