1. GEMX – GENERAL PRESENTATION
1.1 MAIN FEATURES
GemX is a new concept of X-ray generator dedicated to cover a wide
range of portable industrial and security applications. It has been
developed with the most performing technologies currently available,
focusing on performances and reliability. Moreover it is customisable
according to the end-user requirements and offer a full range of options.
Specifications Comments
GemX can be supplied with different types of X-ray inserts. The GemX-160 « Be-
Beryllium window » doesn't filter low energy photons, which opens the door to inspection of low
(20 – 160 kV) density materials in applications such as soft tissues study, the analysis of artistic
paintings and composite material control. It can check structures ranging from : 300 um
Glass/Al window of carbon fibre up to 30 mm of steel. With a GemX-160 « glass window », only photons of
(50 – 160 kV) energy higher than 60 keV are useful. It is the best choice for applications dedicated to
the analysis of metal structures.
Glass/Al window Otherwise, GemX-200 can penetrate up to 35mm of steel in NDT. Perfect for welding and
(50 – 200 kV) pipes inspections. It can also reach 45mm of steel penetration in security...
20/50 – 200 kV The parameters of the GemX have been selected to provide the best compromise between
0.1 – 2 mA size and performances. They fit at best the requirements of new digital detectors that
1 – 60 s require less X-ray dose than traditional film techniques.
Focal spot distance Focal spot on G160 is 54 mm from external front panel surface.
Focal spot on G200 is 80 mm from external xray windows surface.
Oil is the only electrical insulating material that efficiently evacuates heat. Its use in X-ray
Oil insulated generators protects the tubes from thermal stress and the glass from puncturing. Tube

Resonant modes technology (high frequency, resonant inverters and transformers, ... ).
In function of the application and of the customer requirements, GemX can be controlled

GemX can be supplied externally 2 different ways :
28-35 Vdc
- from 28V to 35V with its DC entry ;
Universal Power
- with a universal power supply (110 – 240 Vac) ;
In his fully autonomous version, GemX can be powered with internal batteries. Lithium
Li Po Battery Polymer is the latest technology, with the best weight/capacitance ratio, used e.g. in
electrical cars or recent laptops. With these, GemX batteries have an autonomy of 300,000
kV.mA.s. (It can generate X-ray at 100 kV – 1 mA during 3000 s, i.e. 50 minutes !)
In order to improve autonomy, the electronic automatically adjusts to the most efficient
Power Control working points. If voltage drops too low, it will decrease the selected mA to keep kV
constant as long as possible
GemX has been designed to be robust and withstand to the hard working conditions of
Robust industrial and military devices.
Its is reinforced and main components are protected from shocks

1.7 FIRST SHOOT & PREHEATING
1.7.2 Preheating
1.7.3 Seasoning
GemX must follow a seasoning process after it stopped working more than a month.
Seasoning process is manual. Operator have to follow the procedure explained above.
1. Shoot @ 80 kV (or 100 kV GemX-200) – 1 mA – 30 s
2. Rest 60 s
3. Preheat automatically up to 100 kV (120 kV GemX-200)
4. Shoot @ 100 kV (120 kV GemX-200) – 1 mA – 30 s
5. Rest 60 s
6. Shoot again
Repeat from step 3 by increasing 20 kV each time until you reach max kV (160 or 200 kV
depending on your GemX unit).

(*) the numbers provided here below are indicative. The purpose is to keep the main information
as clear and synthetic as possible but it is not normative or binding in any way.
12/52
1.8.3 Radio protection rules
GemX-200 is limited to 200 kV - 1 mA. At full power, in the direct beam, the emitted dose (air
kerma) is ~ 0.6 Gy /h at a distance of 1 m in front of the device.

IMPORTANT
1. These measurements were performed in free space without scattering radiations.
2. These values result from tests performed on a test unit at LCIE laboratory in Paris in compliance
with NFC 74-100 and on different units at Medex in compliance with ISO 13485 quality process of
Medex. Medex warranties only the compliance with International Regulations that require a dose
lower than 2 mGy/h at 1 m outside the direct beam.
( 2 mGy /h at 1 m = 2000 µGy /h at 1 m = 0.55 µGy /s at 1 m = 0.055 mR /s at 1 m = 200 mR /h
at 1 m)
15/52
1.8.3.4 Scattering
The purpose of an X-ray generator is to examine an object. When an object is irradiated with X-ray,
it is submitted to X-ray scattering. Scattering means that X-ray are re-emitted by the objects in all
directions and, particularly, back from the direction of the emission.
Let's assume that scattered X-ray dose is 1,000 times lower than the direct dose. Nevertheless that
means that 10 m on the back of the device, calculations indicate that you are exposed to a dose 36
µSv / h, which is in fact higher than the dose due to leakage radiations. For 20 shots of 10 s, that
means you can additionally be exposed to a dose of around 2 µSv.
Scattering dose cannot be determined by advance because the « 1000 times lower » rule used here
above is just a « good practice approximation ». Scattered dose depends on geometry and object
compositions and is nearly impossible to calculate.
Scattered X-rays are nevertheless usually of low energy. So, they will be absorbed by most
obstacles and it is a good way to protect you from these rays.
1.8.3.5 Distance
The most important rule in radio protection is certainly the « square distance rule ». It means that
the X-ray dose decreases with the square of the distance from the emission spot.
For example, the dose at 10 m from an X-ray source will be 10^2 = 100 times lower than the dose at
1 m from the device. As another example, the dose at 20 m from the device will be 2^2 = 4 times
lower than the dose at 10 m from the device.
When possible and if it has no practical consequence for your work, try to be as far as possible
from an X-ray source.
16/52
1.9 ACCESSORIES
1.9.1 AC/DC Power supply
GemX can be supplied by its batteries or by an external power supply. This one can be of any type
and its stability is not important. Indeed, GemX adapts itself automatically to its input DC value
in a reasonable range.
Output DC voltage must be between 28 and 35 Vdc but 33 Vdc is preferred, in particular if the
power supply cable is long. The nominal power of the power supply is 300 W for 10 A.
Medex can supplies a connection cable with the appropriate connectors.

For your protection, don't forget to use the « radiation protection cap » that is
provided with the GemX and that reduce the direct beam dose ( See paragraphs 1.8
and 1.8.3.2 ) by a factor of 1,000,000.
- One full kV shot per week will improve X-ray generator reliability and lifetime.
- Reheating is needed for kV upper to kV max /2 (above 80 kV for the GemX-160 or
above 100 kV for the GemX-200).
- Warranty is voided if reheating process is skipped.
24/52
2.6.3.4 Seasoning
* Seasoning is not available any more.
People safety : always keep the generator and its immediate surrounding at sight
when the device emits X-ray.
Radio-frequency emitting devices are prohibited in particular environments. Don't
use the wireless controller in such environment and refer to local regulations.
* Channel selection
There is no risk of interference when several GemX/RCWGX pairs are used in the same area. But
communication can be faster and range higher if a different channel has been selected for each pair
of equipment. 10 channels (0 -> 9) can be used.
If the generator is not equipped with the optional transmitter or if the option has not been
activated (see 2.6.3.8), 3 different messages can be displayed :

If the disturbances last less than 2 seconds this has no effect and the communication is restored
(else, see next section – Safety : Loss of communication). You improve the situation is selecting a
channel that is less disturbed by ELM emissions.
* Safety : Loss of communication
The remote controller always tries to restore the communication with the generator. It calls this
steadily and displays the type and serial number of the generator.
On the generator side, first action is to immediately stop X-ray emission. Green led starts flashing.
If ( OK ) is pushed, RCWGX serial number paired to the GemX is displayed.

Power on security – if for any reason « power » button is pushed on more than 2
seconds, the switching on operation is cancelled and the generator switches off.
30/52
2.7.3 Switch off
If the power button is pushed on more than 2 seconds, the RCxGX switches off and the following
message is displayed :
G o o d b y e !
If RCLGX and software are switched off during an exposure they also send an
« interlock! » message to the generator.
2.7.4 Connectivity
Controllers use a 15-pin Sub-D male connector as interface.
RCWGX needs first to be paired with a dedicated pairing cable of 50 cm.
The wired connection is priority on the wireless connection.
31/52
3. SOFTWARE INTERFACE – GEMX CONTROLLER
Once the option PC control is activated, GemX
can be controlled with a PC interface that has
been developed for this generator.
This interface is particularly user-friendly, with
an automatic port detection. kV, uA, exposure
time, generator temperature and battery status
are continuously measured and displayed.
NB: if the software is not available in your
language, please call your local supplier.
The software has also a « maintenance » mode
where the generator can be analysed. A special
menu for advanced user (protected by a
password) can be used to dialog with the
generator and perform special tests and settings
as well as enabling options.
If you use a USB-RS232 converter, take care to install this with its appropriate drivers
before installing GemX Controller software
32/52
3.3 CONNECTION BETWEEN A GEMX AND A COMPUTER
Computer and GemX must be connected with a cable in order to establish a link and
communication.
• Ethernet link: An Ethernet connection can be established through the laptop and GemX.
Standard HTTP protocol is used. See SDK documentation in annexes and ask your local
dealer for sample code for HTTP Ethernet control can be provided if OEM integration
is needed. Ethernet link is 10BASE-T on CAT-5 cable. Max length is 100 m.
• Serial link: Two cables can be used in function of hardware:
◦ RS-232 – SubD15 cable (Max serial cable length is 50 m.)
◦ USB – SubD15 cable
We recommend to use cables provided by your local dealer but you can also refer to Annex 1
interfacing to build you own.
Take care that Option 1 – RS232 control must be enabled in order to control the
generator with a computer. (See 2.3.4.8 for more details.)
First of all, check that the generator is switched on and properly connected to the
computer (Ethernet or serial link.)
3.4.1 Boot
When the program is launched, a boot window appears. It automatically selects the
communication COM port or Ethernet, tries to establish the communication and download the
generator parameters to initialize the interface. If you have more than one COM port or network
card on the computer, you will have to select the correct one in the first box.
33/52
GemX Ethernet searching is automatically enabled. If you want to turn off this feature, click on
“option wheel” - > “Ethernet”. And disable GEI searching.

A1.2 RS-232 COMMUNICATION
Check that no source of power / voltage comes from the external circuitry before.
Have in mind that the output pins are not ground insulated.
Remote control is possible through a RS232 serial communication protocol. That is the case with
RCLGX, RCWGX and the computer interface.
37/52
A1.3 USE OF “SIGNALLING” OUTPUTS
Check that no source of power / voltage comes from the external circuitry before.
Have in mind that the output pins are not ground insulated.
Warning and safety devices (green, yellow, red lamps and buzzer) can be connected to GemX
through the outputs on the interfacing connector.
These outputs can only operate at low power (command signal). For that purpose an internal low
power +12Vdc 300mA supply is available on the interface connector. Since this is not a power
interface, the best way to use it is to drive mechanical or solid state relays.
Buzzer
Green
Yellow
+12Vdc - 300mA maximum supply. So, the total
Red
current in lamps and buzzer (or relays)
must not exceed 300 mA.
Check that no source of power / voltage comes from the external circuitry before.
Have in mind that the output pins are not ground insulated.
It is also possible to remotely start and stop the GemX with simple push button as follows. You can
use opto-couplers, open-collector output devices, relays or switches to drive these inputs
1.2mA@12Vdc).
These inputs are active, internally lo w pulled-up to +12V through 10 kΩ resistor. The effect of
these inputs is exactly the same as the OK (Start) and Cancel (Stop) buttons of the keyboard. Use
pin 13 of interface connector as a common 0Vdc.
IMPORTANT NOTE : for “START” (OK) : Use falling edge pulses of more than
500ms and less than 2 s otherwise, a “Release” warning will appear.
38/52
A1.5 INTERLOCK
Check that no source of power / voltage comes from the external circuitry before.
Have in mind that the output pins are not ground insulated.
Interlock can be used to add some « switch securities » on the generator for example to delimit a
security area around the generator and to use it in a bunker or in an X-ray cabinet.
Different GemX configurations are possible (with RCLGX, with RCWGX, with a computer, with a
wire or wireless, ...). According to the configuration, interlock can be used a different way.
Principles
* Interlock entry (pin 4) must be at a voltage equal or higher than +5 Vdc to permit X-ray emission.
* A jumper (JP11) sets pin 4 to +8 Vdc and as a consequence permit X-ray emission automatically.
Pin 4 is internally pulled up.
* Even with JP11, pin 4 is still priority and X-ray emission is impossible if pin 4 is set < +5 Vdc. An
additional interlock switch can therefore be used in parallel to any other one.
* When GemX is interfaced to a computer through a standard RS-232 cable (delivered by Medex)
pin 4 is interfaced with the DTE (pin 4) of the computer. When software runs, pin 4 is set at
voltage between +7 Vdc and + 12 Vdc and X-ray emission is enable. When software doesn't run,
pin 4 is set at a voltage between -7 Vdc and -12 Vdc and X-ray emission is impossible.
* When GemX is interfaced to a remote controller through a standard communication cable
(delivered by Medex) pin 4 is set at +5 Vdc.
* When GemX is connected to a flashing light, its own interlock entry can be used. Pin 4 will be set
at +5 Vdc if the interlock of the flashing light permit X-ray emission.
* If needed, in particular cases, the +5 Vdc signal can be supplied through pin 9
JP12
JP11
Direct consequences
* When GemX is interfaced with a cable, if JP11 is absent, the removal of the cable stops the X-ray
emission ; if JP11 is present, the removal of the cable doesn't stop the emission.
* When GemX is controlled with the wireless remote controller, JP11 must be present OR a cable
must be used to set pin 4 at +5 Vdc at least (e.g. with a flashing light or in connecting pin 9 to pin
4).
Examples

the ground, X-ray emission will be stopped.
Pin 11
X-ray emission starts when 11 is grounded, it stops when Start Stop
Pin 13 Gnd
the exposure time is elapsed or when pin 1 is grounded.
To enable the function, rocker power switch must be -of course- in “ON” position.
This is a hard switch which will automatically cut power in any case.
41/52
A1.7 ETHERNET COMMUNICATION & SDK
A standard Ethernet cable CAT-5 can be used to link GemX with laptop.
Connect the cable between them. LED on GemX Ethernet receptacle turn green when connection
become active.
This section gives you information about protocol for OEM integration. If you're
using Medex GemX Controller Software, you don't need to read this part. GemX
Control Software integrate Ethernet communication capability.
GemX control takes advantages and facilities of standard HTTP protocol. Its commands are
described in annex A2.2. GemX are factory configured with static 192.168.1.210 IP address.
For example, http://192.168.1.210/HXON00000 will start the GemX and send you back a
“XON00000” plain text message to confirm.
To keep GemX communication link alive, a command must be sent at least every
seconds. If no commands are received by the GemX during 1.5s, GemX will stop
shooting (security feature).
42/52
ANNEX 2 RS232 COMMUNICATION PROCESS AND PROTOCOL
Option 1 must be validated by keycode to enable this protocol process.
( See : 2.3.4.8 Option enable )
Always use STATE CODE to check generator status with this is activated.
This communication process allow you to dialogue with all GemX generators. This is an easy way
to program and control the generator. All the user necessary parameters can be read, modified and
used through this process.

ANNEX 3 BATTERY AND BATTERY CHARGER
A3.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND SAFE USE
GemX uses the latest technology in term of batteries : Lithium Polymer (Li Po). These batteries
have a very density of energy (in term of stored J / kg). Their main use is the car industry and in
some particular applications such as remote-controlled aircraft where as much energy as possible
must be stored for a minimum weight.
Another advantages of the Li Po batteries are :
* high discharge rate (up to 15 C, which means 45 A in the current case)
* excellent storage characteristics ( > 90% after 6 months at 23°C ; decrease with a higher T )
* no memory effect
* high life cycle : ~ 500 cycles
GemX uses a pack made of 2 * 4-cell batteries. Both are permanently checked in term of voltage
and temperature to prevent any misuse.
The charge state of the batteries is indicated on the remote controller. Note that the real status is
indicated when the generator does not emit X-rays but securities are checked during work ( See
A3.2 for more informations )
46/52
Take care of the orientation of the battery pack when you plug this into the generator
The « spur » is towards the front of the generator.
To take the battery out, push the connector towards the back ; the battery is ejected
47/52
A3.2 OPTIMAL USE
The electrical capacity of the batteries is around 300,000 kV.mA.s : it means you can get 100 kV – 1
mA during around 3000 s or you can take around 300 shots of 100 kV – 10 mAs with a fully charge
battery. Nevertheless, in order to get these performances, some « principles of good practice » must
be followed.
