PHILIPPINES
INTRODUCTION
The previous quarter provided an overview of the phenomenal
capabilities and possibilities of the electronic or digital media
available in today’s technology- driven world.

In this quarter, the modern techniques and trends in

photography, film, print media, digital media, and product and industrial design will
be explored. Most notably the talent, creativity, and quality workmanship of Filipino
artists and designers in all these fields will be recognized and celebrated. The

role or function of artworks.

Photography is a method of recording the image of an object through the

action of light. Focusing a camera at a subject and clicking the shutter is photography
as process. The word, derived from the Greek photos (“light”) and graphein (“to draw”),
was first used in the 1830’s. Photography is an art form that came in the late 1800’s
with “series photography” and the invention of celluloid strip film. Photography as art
is discerning a significant moment or a unique expression, framing it in the camera
viewfinder with an eye for composition, and then clicking the shutter.

ART ELEMENTS USED IN PHOTOGRAPHY

1. Texture is finding things that have interesting
textures and including them in your photograph.
For portraits, a textured background such as a
worn, rustic barn can make your subject stand out
and give you creative background. Textured skin

2. Line can mean a few

different things. Leading lines can move your
viewer’s eyes throughout a photograph – diagonals
are great. Repeating lines that fade into the
background will bring the viewer’s back into the
picture. Lines aren’t always straight; the “line” of a
model’s body can create an “S” shape that will lead
the viewer’s eye all along her body.

photograph all lead your eye straight to the subject.

4. Color is a very basic element. The primary colors of red,

blue, and yellow can be mixed together to create
secondary and tertiary colors, eventually creating the
“color wheel.” Colors opposite each other on the color
wheel are complementary and work well together. This is
why you always see red with green (Christmas), blue with
orange (sports team), and yellow with purple (Lakers).

 5. Shape Objects in your photo such as a rectangular door, a round tree, or
square tiles add “shape” to an image. These can be used as “frames” for your
subject or just to add an interesting piece to your art.

6. Form is what takes your two-dimensional

photograph and makes it appear life-like and three-
dimensional. This is usually achieved by controlling
the light on your subject. There are many different
lighting setups for portrait photography that will give
form to your subjects in varying degrees or shape and
intensity.
Using carefully placed lights will add light and
shadow in the right places in order to give a
three-dimensional appearance to the photo.

7. Tone is using varying degrees of light and dark to

add contrast and give liveliness to an image.
Black and white photos rely completely on tone
because of their lack of color. Tone can be used to
make your subject stand out through contrast.
Don’t be afraid to use tone to really isolate
your subject, especially in a black and white
image

8. Space is another element that gives depth to your image. All

images should have some kind of foreground, middle ground,
and a background. This is a simple way to move your viewer’s
eye all around your image and even back in space.

3. Manny Librodo is from Lambunao, Iloilo, Philippines.

He graduated Valedictorian in high school and was a
college scholar at University in the Philippines in the
Visayas in college. Manuel L Librodo Jr (b. 1964
-Lambunao, Iloilo, Philippines) is a highly decorated
photographer. Specializing in travel and people, glamour
and fashion photography. His images have appeared in
many publications worldwide, including several cover
pages for Asian Geographic and calendars for UNICEF. A

The Photographer as Artist

Focusing a camera at a subject and clicking the shutter

is photography as process. Discerning a significant moment or
a unique expression, framing it in the camera viewfinder with
an eye for composition, and then clicking the shutter is
photography as art. That discernment and that eye for
composition are the factors that elevate a photographer from a
mere recorder of images to an artist.

Photography as Communication

Being a modern art form means that photography

is now viewed as being more than just beautiful. It is also
considered one of the most powerful means of
communication.
Imagery (mostly Photography) has become such
an important part of communication in modern times. If
you have communication in mind when you take the
picture, then your photograph will have
communication value. A photo can say what words
might struggle to, and vice versa.

LESSON 2: FILM
A Film, also called a movie, motion picture or moving picture, is a work of visual
art used to simulate experiences that communicate ideas, stories, perceptions,
feelings, beauty, or atmosphere through the use of moving images. These images are
generally accompanied by sound, and more rarely, other sensory stimulations.

 All films have texture. Texture has an important sensory dimension; it
expresses the feel of something and thus evokes response. Texture also
encompasses broader expressions of quality and nature, relating to the weaving of
cloth, a web or a narrative.

2. Line
Crossing the line is a very important concept
in video and film production. It refers to an
imaginary line which cuts through the middle of
the scene, from side to side with respect to the
camera. Crossing the line changes the viewer's
perspective in such as way that it causes
disorientation and confusion.

3. Color
Color is used to set the tone of a scene
before any of the actors have even uttered a
word. Red is used to denote passion, danger or
power. Pink signifies innocence, femininity and
beauty. Yellow is associated with joy, naivety
and insanity.

4. Shape
Shape a major building block of
composition and are critical to each. In film, a
collection of vertical and horizontal lines can
indicate a character is trapped or held prisoner

 5. Form
Form can be defined as the total system of
relationships at work in the film. These
relationships are ones between parts and
elements, be they stylistic or narrative entities.
Form-matching is a prominent device used in
the film to illustrate the city’s synchronization
to the audience without the use of words.

The circular motion of threads moving on a

sewing machine mirrors the circular form of a
smokestack.

6. Value
Value deals with the lightness or darkness
of a color. Since we see objects and
understand objects because of how dark or
light they are, value is incredibly important to
art.

In the Mood for Love. Value plays a key role in

the juxtaposition of the private and public
realms of Mrs. Chan and Mr. Chow. 

7. Space
A movie uses deep space when there are
important components in the frame located
both close to and far from the camera. It is
used to emphasize the distance between
objects and/or characters, as well as any
obstacles that exist between them.

ups confuse the audience’s perception of space,
contributing thfilm’s psychological horror.

FILM ARTISTS AND THEIR FILM

In the Philippine film scene, the American influence was evident in the pre-
World War II and Liberation years with song-and-dance musicals, romantic dramas,
and comedy films. Beginning with the turbulent 1970s, however, progressive Filipino
directors emerged to make movies dealing with current social issues and examining
the Filipino character.

1. Catalino Ortiz Brocka was a Filipino film director. He is widely regarded as
one of the most influential and significant Filipino filmmakers in the history of
Philippine cinema. (Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang, 1974; Maynila, Sa Mga Kuko
ng Liwanag, 1975)

2. Miguel Pamintuan de Leon also known as Mike de

Leon, is a Filipino film director, cinematographer,
scriptwriter, and film producer. (Itim, 1976; Sister Stella L,
1984; Bayaning 3rd World, 1999)

3. Ishmael Bernal was a Filipino filmmaker, stage and

television director, actor and screenwriter. Noted for his
melodramas, particularly with feminist and moral issues, he
directed many landmark Filipino films such as Nunal sa
Tubig, City After Dark, Relasyon, Himala (1982), and Hinugot
sa Langit.

4. Maurice Ruiz de Luzuriaga Gallaga,

better known as Peque Gallaga, was a multi-
awarded Filipino film-maker. His most
significant achievement in film was "Oro,
Plata, Mata", which he directed after winning
a scriptwriting contest sponsored by the
Experimental Cinema of the Philippines. (Oro,
Plata, Mata, 1983).

5. Laurice Guillen’s Salome (1981) earned international

acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival. Her
more recent films, such as Tanging Yaman,(2001) which
won Best Picture in the Metro Manila Film Festival,
American Adobo (2002), Santa Santita (2004), and Sa ‘Yo
Lamang (2010), all gained her recognition among the
current generation of Filipino moviegoers.

6. Marilou Diaz Abaya captured the

attention and respect of the viewing
public with powerful films such as
Jose Rizal (1998), perfectly timed for
the centennial celebration of Philippine
independence; Muroami (1999), which
bravely exposed the deadly practice of
using child-divers to pound for fish in
the Philippines’ coral reefs; and
Bagong Buwan (2001), which dealt
with the human cost of conflict in Mindanao.

7. Maryo J. delos Reyes. The heartwarming

drama film Magnifico won for him the Best
Director distinction at the 2003 FAMAS
Awards and garnered other local and

international film awards as well.

teleseryes (television drama series).

8. Brillante Mendoza. Mendoza was originally a production designer for

films, commercials, and music videos, and started directing films in
2005. But in just four years, his film Kinatay (The Execution of P) won for
him the Best Director award at the highly prestigious Cannes Film
Festival of 2009.

THE COLLABORATIVE ART OF FILMMAKING

● Film directing - It is the director, like the painter and sculptor in

traditional art, who envisions the final effect of the film on its viewers,
visually, mentally, and emotionally.
● Acting - There was the art of acting for film. With live theater as the only
form of acting at that time, film actors had to learn to express themselves
without the exaggerated facial expressions and gestures used on stage.
● Cinematography - Behind the scenes, there was cinematography or the
art of film camera work. This captured the director’s vision of each scene
through camera placement and movement, lighting, and other special
techniques.
● Editing - This was joined by film editing, the art of selecting the precise
sections of film, then sequencing and joining them to achieve the
director’s desired visual and emotional effect.

 ● Production/Set design - Underlying all these was the art of production
and set design. This recreated in physical terms—through location,
scenery, sets, lighting, costumes, and props—the mental image that the
director had of how each scene should look, what period it should depict,
and what atmosphere it should convey.

FILM GENRES

1. Action Genre-Movies in the action genre are defined by risk and stakes. While
many movies may feature an action sequence, to be appropriately categorized
inside the action genre, the bulk of the content must be action-oriented,
including fight scenes, stunts, car chases, and general danger. Ex. MUSHUP
2. Drama Genre is defined by conflict and often looks to reality rather than
sensationalism. Emotions and intense situations are the focus, but where other
genres might use unique or exciting moments to create a feeling, movies in the
drama genre focus on common occurrences. Drama is a very broad category
and untethered to any era — from movies based on Shakespeare to
contemporary narratives. Ex. Beaches (1988), The Fault in our Stars (2012).
3. Crime Genre deals with both sides of the criminal justice system but
does not focus on legislative matters or civil suits and legal actions. The
best crime movies often occupy moral gray areas where heroes and
villains are much harder to define. Many of Martin Scorsese's best
movies or Quentin Tarantino's movies fall within the crime genre.
Ex. Ocean’s Eleven (2001), A Fish Called Wanda (1988).
4. Comedy Genre is defined by events that are intended to make someone
laugh, no matter if the story is macabre, droll, or zany. Comedy can be
found in most movies, but if the majority of the film is intended to be a
comedy you may safely place it in this genre. The best comedy movies
range throughout this entire spectrum of humor. Ex. Hot Fuzz (2007),
Charlie’s Angels (2000).
5. Animation Genre is defined by inanimate objects being manipulated to appear
as though they are living. This can be done in many different ways and can
incorporate any other genre and sub-genre on this list. For more info on
animation, you can dive deeper on the types of animation or see our list of the
best animated movies of all time. Ex. Robin Hood (1973)
6. Experimental Genre is often defined by the idea that the work of art and
entertainment does not fit into a particular genre or sub-genre, and is intended
as such. Experimental art can completely forego a cohesive narrative in
exchange for an emotional response or nothing at all.
Ex. Eraserhead (1977), 8 ½ (1963).
7. Fantasy Genre is defined by both circumstance and setting inside a fictional
universe with an unrealistic set of natural laws. The possibilities of fantasy are
nearly endless, but the movies will often be inspired by or incorporate human

ANIMATION is a method in which figures are manipulated to appear as moving
images. In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted by hand on
transparent celluloid sheets to be photographed and exhibited on film. Today,
most animations are made with computer-generated imagery (CGI).

ART ELEMENTS USED IN ANIMATION

1. Texture can be thought of as the combination of
narrative elements and as the tactile quality of
the surface of an object. A lot of work goes into
the attempt of recreating the impression of tactile
surfaces or textures in digitally produced
animation, as evidenced by job description of
“Shader and Texture Artist”[4]. Natural Media

effort into means of incorporating or 3D texturing in animation production;

ANIMATION ARTISTS AND

THEIR CREATION

1.Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) is a

non-stock, non-profit organization that aims to create an identity
for the Philippines within the animation industry, making it one of
the preferred sources for animation services worldwide.

2.Philippine Animation Studio, Inc. (PASI) was

established in 1991 and has since collaborated on
numerous animation projects and series with foreign
partners. Among these have been Captain Flamingo,
Producing Parker, Groove High, and Space Heroes
Universe. For this last cartoon, PASI was tapped by a

 children’s entertainment company based in Sydney, Australia and went on to win the
Best Animation Category in the 2012 Pixel Awards.

Among the other exciting milestones in the fast-emerging Philippine animation

industry was the creation in 2008 of Urduja, an animated film adaptation of the
legend of the warrior princess of Pangasinan. Produced by APT Entertainment,
Seventoon, and Imaginary Friends, Urduja is recognized as the first fully-animated
Filipino film, created by an all-Filipino group of animators using the traditional (hand-
drawn) animation process with some 3D effects. The characters were voiced by an all-
star cast of actors from Philippine cinema and television, with the screenplay written
in Filipino.

Also released in 2008 was Dayo: Sa

Mundo ng Elementalia, said to be the country’s first all-digital full-length
animated feature film. Produced by Cutting Edge Productions, the film
presents Philippine mythical creatures as heartwarming characters in a
young boy's adventure. Dayo was also the firstever animated movie to be
screened during the Metro Manila Film Festival, as it was entered in the 34 th
MMFF in December 2008. Another breakthrough was the first Filipino full

Ambient Media, Thaumatrope Animation, and Star
Cinema in 2010.

LESSON 4: PRINT MEDIA

PRINT MEDIA is a varied landscape
of advertising opportunities. This category includes
newspapers, magazines, direct mail, flyers, door
hangers, and catalogs. These media offer the ability to
present your brand, product, or message to an
audience in a way unlike any other venue.

ART ELEMENTS USED IN PRINT MEDIA

1. Line is the most basic element for artistic
creation. It can be created as a mark that
connects two dots and comes in all shapes, sizes,
and is infinitely manipulable.

2. Shape is the form that a combination of lines take,

resulting in the subject of the image. In this
woodcut, Vallotton creates the image of two lovers in a
room by the use of just black and white shapes.

3. Form is the 3-D version of a shape and can be

measured by height, width and depth.
In Haeckel’s “Kunstformen der Natur,” each shape
utilizes color to create highlights and shadows, giving
the impression of depth in the work.

4. Space determines the way that objects relate to each
other within the artwork, it’s the location on which the
elements are placed. Goya’s bulls are centered in the
piece, giving the illusion of a deep black space around
them and drawing attention to the dramatic forms
themselves.

has a huge impact on the way a piece is interpreted by the
audience.

announcements in newspapers and magazines, over
radio or television, on billboards, etc. and to get more
customers by advertising. Advertising is a marketing
communication that employs an openly sponsored,
non-personal message to promote or sell a product,
service or idea. Advertising is communicated through various mass media,

magazines, television, radio, outdoor advertising or direct mail; and new media such
as search results, blogs, social media, websites or text messages.

2. Comic Books also called comic magazine or (in the United Kingdom and
Ireland) simply comic, is a publication that consists of comics art in the

 4. Digital Media is any form of media that uses
electronic devices for distribution. This form
of media can be created, viewed, modified and
distributed via electronic devices. Digital
media is commonly used software, video
games, videos, websites, social media, and
online advertising.
This also means that the manner by which
today’s readers can find, access, and enjoy
these electronic books (or ‘ebooks’) is via digital
media tablets, ebook readers, and other
handheld reading devices. One such device that is available locally is the
ebook reader called Kobo, which features international as well as Philippine
titles.

LESSON 5: INNOVATION IN PRODUCT AND INDUSTRIAL

DESIGN
This encompasses product and industrial design as applied to furniture,
lighting, and interior accessories, as well as fashion from haute couture to bridal
ensembles to casual wear. As a result, a number of Filipino designers have risen to
superstardom both locally and internationally.

ART ELEMENTS USED IN INNOVATION IN PRODUCT AND

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

1. Line Points create lines and lines create shapes. A

line can have other elements like color, texture, and
movement applied to it. Though basic in appearance,
lines can control the viewer’s thoughts and emotions,
and lead a viewer’s eye through space in a design.

2. Shape is a two- or three-dimensional object that

stands out from the space next to it because of a
defined or implied boundary. A shape can live in
different areas in space, and have other elements like
line, color, texture, or movement. Like forms, shapes
come in two different types: geometric and organic.

3. Form can be created by combining shapes, and it

can be enhanced by color or texture. Depending on
their usage, they can also be ornate or utilitarian. For

digital design, think of form as the object you’re designing for; so if you’re designing for
a mobile device, the phone is your form.

4. Space Objects in space can occur in both two and

three dimensions. In a two-dimensional setting, space
is about creating the illusion of a third dimension on
a flat surface. Shadows, shading, overlap, and sizing
can help define an object’s place in space. For
example, a button could have a shadow that makes it
feel like it’s closer to the user.

5. Color is one of the hardest elements to harness,

and probably one of the most challenging to
understand in designing. The basics, however, are
relatively easy. Color can help the organization of a
design, and give emphasis to specific areas or
actions. 

6. Texture is the way a surface feels, or the way it’s

perceived to feel. It has the power to attract or detract
a viewer’s eyes, and can be applied to lines, shapes,
and forms.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER AND THEIR
CREATION
1. KENNETH COBONPUE is a Filipino industrial
designer known for his unique designs integrating
natural materials through innovative handmade
production processes. He began his design career
after his studies in Industrial Design in New York,
which led him to apprenticeships and further studies
in Italy and Germany.

2. MONIQUE LHUILLIER Also hailing from Cebu City, Filipina fashion
designer Monique Lhuillier first rose to prominence for her exquisite wedding
gowns. But she has since become one of the darlings of the Hollywood
celebrity set, with several A-list stars having worn her couture creations to
gala events and award shows, as well as to their own weddings. Lhuillier
studied at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles,
and now has her own retail boutiques in that city and in New York.

3. JOSIE
NATORI.
Another
name that has a prestigious place in the New York fashion industry is
that of Josie Natori. Born Josephina Almeda Cruz in Manila, this Filipino
American fashion designer began her career as an investment banker,
before she made the dramatic shift to creating her own lines of lingerie,
resort and lounge wear, as well as semi-formal and casual attire. She
went on to establish The Natori Company that has built up a lifestyle
brand that today includes four lingerie lines, the Josie Natori ready-to-
wear collection, home accessories, fragrance, and eyewear.

4. Rajo Laurel. Probably best known to the general
public as a judge on the television series Project number
of national and international awards to his name.
Runway Philippines, Rajo Laurel is a much-admired
Filipino fashion designer with a Fashion Institute of
Technology and at Central Saint Martin’s in London.
Laurel is also a savvy entrepreneur, establishing House
of Laurel and Rajo Laurel Enterprise. His creations
maintain a Filipino sensibility, incorporating
embroidery, beadwork, and hand-painted prints, while

also offering the

edition pieces. Thus,
he has gained a loyal
local following and the
attention of the
international market.

5. Lulu Tan Gan. Known for her fashionable knitwear

lines. That specialty has since evolved into a new since
1985, Lulu Tan-Gan had been dubbed “The Queen of
Knitwear” in the country. hand-woven line, called
Indigenous Couture, that blends
Philippine artisan crafts, fabrics,
fibers, and other local materials with
TanGan’s signature contemporary
lifestyle dressing.

6. Dita Sandico-Ong. Another Philippine designer who

has been advocating the use of local weaving
techniques and natural fibers is Dita Sandico-Ong.
Known as the “Wrap Artiste” of the Philippines for her
famous bold-colored wraps, Sandico-Ong first
experimented with the local weave of Ilocos Sur, known
as inabel, as well as with pineapple fibers blended with
Irish linen, dubbed piñalino.

 From there, she tried other local fibers, particularly abaca which she was
introduced to by weaver and entrepreneur Virgilio Apanti. Sandico-
Ong has since been working with a multi-purpose cooperative in Photo:
Catanduanes, training them in natural dye extraction and Philippine
Embassy, Rome
advanced weaving techniques for abaca.
Today, her collection includes wraps or
panuelos, as well as boleros, jackets, and long tunics of
banana fiber and abaca. Her designs are presented in
fashion shows around the world and are sold in high-
end shops in major international cities.

 2. Make a 3-5mins. video (Vlog) tour of a significant location. If you (students) visit
a place on a field trip, on vacation or any time -- you can share your learning
experience with others by recording video of it and narrating as they go. (If
they're at a museum or other such place, asking permission first is probably a
good idea!) If they can't visit it, creating a video slideshow with Animoto or in a
screencast would work, too. A virtual walking tour is an option if you have
mobile data internet, too. Use Google Maps Street View to view one of these
fantastic locations virtually (or anywhere else). Record it (including the
microphone for your voice) while you play tour guide and read some facts about
the location from a script or extemporaneously!

ACTIVITY NO. 5: “STOP-ACTION ANIMATION”

1. In a group of 3-5 members you will have to use a mobile phone, tablet, or digital
to do this most simple and basic process for creating what is known as “stop-
action animation.”
2.The members will perform any TIKTOK DANCE they like that will be captured by
the other member who holds the camera and captures pictures every 10
seconds. Make 10 pictures.
3.The 10 captured images will then be made to “move” using a digital animation
program (as discussed in Quarter II) or a slideshow/video app in the phone. You
can add music or sounds on your animation.
