How was your score? Do not worry. Read this module to learn more about
dimensions of media and information--audio.
In the previous module, you learned about the basics of visual-based media
presentation. This is important for most of the information especially in social media
platforms are visual in nature. However, in this module, you will discover another
dimension of media and information which is Audio.

Guide Questions:
1. What is common to the above social media?
2. How does it differ to popular social media?
3. Which one have you used? How did you find your experience?
That’s right! Most of the above social media platforms focus on audio-only
presentation. They are breakthroughs of the new audio wave hardware such as
earphones, echoes, google homes and podcast. But, why voice?
Voice not only expands the time users can be social but with over 256
million visually impaired individuals globally who have been widely overlooked for
years, a voice-based social network is an accessible opportunity to be “social” like
never before.

How many did you guess? That’s right! Audio content is any type of published
material or information that is consumed through listening. This area of content
includes any type of auditory entertainment or marketing collateral such as radio
broadcast, music, sound recording, sound clips/effects, artificial intelligence (AI)
voice assistant skills or actions. Audio content can be played through devices like
computer speakers, headphones, or smart speakers.
Each audio file type has unique benefits and drawbacks. Determine which one
is best for specific tasks or situations to save time and reduce stressful errors. Here
are seven popular audio file types and some unique differences between them.
Match the audio file type in column A with its description in column B. Write

E. WMA
of cloud storage and bigger hard drive space in contemporary
computers
___6. Free Lossless Audio Codec is an audio file compressed into a

smaller size of the original file.
What Is It
To further study audio content, you will come across Sound Design. What does
it mean? It can be viewed as a tool to tell a story.
Sound design can be created using a similar layered effect. There are six basic
layers that we can utilize in a multitude of different combinations to create effects.
For example, if we are viewing a scene in a forest what are we likely to hear?
Birds tweeting in the distance and winds gently blowing would match our experience
of spending time in woods. It serves as one tool which can allow us to become more
fully immersed in the story or scene as it unfolds before us.
◼ Foley sounds. These are the sounds that make the scene seem more real to
us. These are sounds that make us more readily enter the world we are faced
with. They are also sounds that can be easily recorded with a real microphone.
Foley sounds also feature in a feature film in addition to animation and motion
design.
For example, when a character walks, they are not silent. We mare hear the
gentle swish-swish of their clothing as they move or the sound of their footsteps on
the concrete.
8
◼ Audio Effects (SFX). These are sounds that are not naturally created in the
real world and therefore can’t be recorded by means of a microphone. For
example, the sound of a battle in outer space is not something that can be
recorded but must be imagines and recreated.
◼ Dialogue. These are speech, conversation, and voice over. It brings forth the
story by showing the communication and interaction of two or more
characters.
o Voice overs. It is the narrator's voice which guides us through what is
happening on the screen.
For example, in 500 Days of Summer, we never see the narrator, but he plays
a pivotal role in guiding us through the film and highlighting key moments.
◼ Music. Music is a tool we can use to set the dynamics of mood we wish to
convey
◼ Silence. It is the absence of audio or music.
Sometimes you will only need a voice over, and music or sound effects. Balance
is important when it comes to sound design. All the audio level of each layer needs to
be adjusted and balanced to create the right effect.
Principles of sound design are the techniques for combining the different
elements or objects of sound.
9
What’s More
Listen to your favorite song. As you do, identify the elements of sound design.
Use the checklist below to list the sound design elements.
Good observation. Not all elements are present in one audio-based media and
information. However, it must have balance among these elements.
Your right! Each audio content has its own style in arranging the sound design
elements to come with the desired output.
10
Activity 3. Adjust What You Listen.
Pick one audio-content only media found in Audlist, HearMeOut, Listen, Riffr.
Do the following:
1. Identify the sound element design and design principles using the checklist
above.
2. Rate the audio-content based on the rubrics below.

What I Can Do
Module is Real
Recall that an audio blog has vocal recordings as its central part. As a
performance task for audio-based media presentation, you are to make a 5-minute
audio blog about your experience in the “new normal” system of education. You can
record using any recording device or computer software available to you. Refer to the
rubrics below as your guide.
