dimensions of media and information--audio.

What I Need to Know

In the previous module, you learned about the basics of visual-based media
presentation. This is important for most of the information especially in social media
platforms are visual in nature. However, in this module, you will discover another
dimension of media and information which is Audio.

So, get ready to be amazed in the world of audio-based presentation. In this

module, you are expected to:

1. identify the different types of audio content;

2. describe the purposes of audio media and information;
3. analyze the design principles and elements used in a given audio media;
4. critique the effectiveness of audio information.
5. create an audio-based presentation (podcast) by using design principles
and elements.

What’s In

Social media is everywhere. According to Oberlo.com (2019) 90.4% of

millennials and 77.5% of generation X are social media users. I’m sure, you are one
of them. With that, let’s see how many can you identify in our first activity in this
module.

Guide Questions:
1. What is common to the above social media?
2. How does it differ to popular social media?
3. Which one have you used? How did you find your experience?

That’s right! Most of the above social media platforms focus on audio-only
presentation. They are breakthroughs of the new audio wave hardware such as
earphones, echoes, google homes and podcast. But, why voice?

Unlike text-based and visual based-presentation, voice conveys emotion, tone,

and subtleties that text and visual are unable to capture. With the ability to listen to
your social feed when riding, running or any other hands-free activity, voice-based
social media platforms give more “screen time” to people’s days.

Voice not only expands the time users can be social but with over 256
million visually impaired individuals globally who have been widely overlooked for
years, a voice-based social network is an accessible opportunity to be “social” like
never before.

Interested? To know more about audio-only presentation, let’s continue on

the next activity.

What’s New

Match the Type

According to Zev Brodsky, a content marketing manager at Perimeter 81,

presenting information verbally is much more personal for listeners and much
different from reading. So, let’s find out what are common audio content type. Do the
activity below to discover.

Match the picture of social media platform in column A with its description in
column B. Write the letter of your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

A B
Audio Types Description
A.
____1. a blog with vocal recordings as its central
part

How many did you guess? That’s right! Audio content is any type of published
material or information that is consumed through listening. This area of content
includes any type of auditory entertainment or marketing collateral such as radio
broadcast, music, sound recording, sound clips/effects, artificial intelligence (AI)
voice assistant skills or actions. Audio content can be played through devices like
computer speakers, headphones, or smart speakers.

Traditionally, sound or audio media is used to give instruction or information,

provide feedback and to personalize or customize information. It could also be used
by publishers, marketers, and other creators in a variety of ways such as:

◼ to increase interaction with customers or answer product questions.

◼ can be integrated into website pages that read the text aloud.
◼ discuss important, related topics or provide customers with business
updates.
◼ allow users to play the information while carrying out the tasks
simultaneously.

Look What It Stands

Each audio file type has unique benefits and drawbacks. Determine which one
is best for specific tasks or situations to save time and reduce stressful errors. Here
are seven popular audio file types and some unique differences between them.

Match the audio file type in column A with its description in column B. Write
the letter of your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

7
___3. Windows Media Audio is a Windows-based alternative beneficial
C. FLAC is its lossless compression, retaining high audio quality
throughout all types of restructuring processes.
___4. A Compressed audio file format developed by the Moving Picture
D. WAV Experts Group (MPEG). It saves valuable space while maintaining
near-flawless quality of the original source of sound.
___5. Moving Picture Expert Group-4 is an audio-compressed file used
in the modern setting due to increased quality demand as a result
E. WMA
of cloud storage and bigger hard drive space in contemporary
computers
___6. Free Lossless Audio Codec is an audio file compressed into a
F. AAC
smaller size of the original file.

What Is It

What is sound design exactly?

To further study audio content, you will come across Sound Design. What does
it mean? It can be viewed as a tool to tell a story.

Sound design can be created using a similar layered effect. There are six basic
layers that we can utilize in a multitude of different combinations to create effects.

◼ Ambiance. The ambiance is essentially background noise. Ideally, it should

inform the viewer about where the action is taking place. Therefore, it needs to
inform and be descriptive without being overwhelming or distracting the viewer
from the story.

For example, if we are viewing a scene in a forest what are we likely to hear?
Birds tweeting in the distance and winds gently blowing would match our experience
of spending time in woods. It serves as one tool which can allow us to become more
fully immersed in the story or scene as it unfolds before us.

◼ Foley sounds. These are the sounds that make the scene seem more real to
us. These are sounds that make us more readily enter the world we are faced
with. They are also sounds that can be easily recorded with a real microphone.
Foley sounds also feature in a feature film in addition to animation and motion
design.

For example, when a character walks, they are not silent. We mare hear the
gentle swish-swish of their clothing as they move or the sound of their footsteps on
the concrete.

8
◼ Audio Effects (SFX). These are sounds that are not naturally created in the
real world and therefore can’t be recorded by means of a microphone. For
example, the sound of a battle in outer space is not something that can be
recorded but must be imagines and recreated.

◼ Dialogue. These are speech, conversation, and voice over. It brings forth the
story by showing the communication and interaction of two or more
characters.
o Voice overs. It is the narrator's voice which guides us through what is
happening on the screen.

For example, in 500 Days of Summer, we never see the narrator, but he plays
a pivotal role in guiding us through the film and highlighting key moments.

◼ Music. Music is a tool we can use to set the dynamics of mood we wish to
convey
◼ Silence. It is the absence of audio or music.

Sometimes you will only need a voice over, and music or sound effects. Balance
is important when it comes to sound design. All the audio level of each layer needs to
be adjusted and balanced to create the right effect.

What are Principles of Sound Design?

Principles of sound design are the techniques for combining the different
elements or objects of sound.

◼ Mixing – the combination, balance and control of multiple sound elements

◼ Pace – Time control, editing, order of events: It could be linear, non-linear and
multi-linear.
◼ Transitions. How you get from one segment or element to another. Types of
transitions:
o Segue – one element stops, the next begins (“cut” in film).
o Cross fade – one element fades out, the next fades in, and they overlap on
the way.
o V-Fade – first element fades to inaudible before the second element begins.
o Fade to black – V-fade with some silence between elements
◼ Stereo Imaging – Using left and right channel for depth.
