1. Vocabulary building

1.1 Match the words in the list with their meanings given below.
A. Words list

2.1 Talking about the weather – conversation starters


1. “Lovely day, isn’t it!”
2. “Bit nippy today.”
3. “What strange weather we’re having!”
4. “It doesn’t look like it’s going to stop raining today.”
5. “Bit cold today”

2.2 Attitude to weather


Although people like to complain about bad weather, they generally “put a brave face on it”.
If someone complains about too much rain, you might hear:

1. “Never mind – it’s good for the garden.”

If someone complains about too much sun shine, you might hear:

2. “Is it good – We can dry our clothes”

2.3 Predicting the weather
When we’re talking about the weather, we often make predictions. Remember to use a range of
forms – not just the “will” or “going to” form:

1. “I think it’ll clear up later.”


3. “It’s going to rain by the looks of it.”
4. “We’re in for frost tonight.”
5. “They’re expecting snow in the north.”
6. “I hear that showers are coming our way.”
7. “It’s going to be a prolonged rain”
8.  “We’re expecting blustery wind tomorrow”
9. “I think we will face a drought very soon”
10. “They’re expecting  blizzard tomorrow morning”
11. “It’s going to rain in the evening”

2.4 Activity
1.  Amale and Janitha are talking about the weather. Fill in the blanks using the words given
below.

Janitha: Hi, do you want to go and get some lunch?
