IX. Based on the text, the Olympic Games are the opportunity athletes
have to (10 esc)
Sport at its highest level is a pure rush to the edge of human
capability. How often do we get to watch mankind at its absolute best?
We hear a composer’s symphony or see the scar from a brilliant
surgeon’s operation, but we seldom see these men and women at the
moment of supreme achievement. Sport provides one of the rare
theaters where these moments can be glimpsed, and the Olympics are its
gaudiest stage, where more records are set and broken than any other
athletic event in the world. By watching athletes like Marion Jones,
Michael Johnson and Ian Thorpe push out the boundaries of human
achievement, don’t we also grow a little bit? Our very sense of what is possible expands by just a few mm
or a hundredth of a second or even by the very staging of the Games. We are not only faster or stronger
than we thought, we are also more indomitable of spirit and hopeful of forgiveness, more willing to
ignore past conflicts and yesterday’s hatreds. We grow by merely participating.

X. The text says that Behar and Shelda (10 esc)

As a participatory sport, beach volleyball is second in

popularity only to soccer in Brazil, and four-time world champions
Behar and Shelda are national celebrities.

The road to representing Brazil in the games began for Behar

and Shelda in 1995. Both played indoor volleyball and knew each
other as promising youngsters. Shelda was considering heading to the
lucrative U.S. tour and Behar was contemplating a coaching career
when veteran coach Leticia Pessoa suggested the women work out
together. They found they had complementary styles, with Behar
covering blocks and Shelda hanging back and picking up backcourt
attacks. Playing together for five years is unusual among pairs in this
young sport, which made its Olympic debut in Atlanta. To Shelda,
“the friendship and respect we have for each other is perhaps the
secret of our success.”

But it’s not all fun in the sun. Beach volleyball, Behar stresses, is more difficult than the
indoor version. Not only do the women have to be in peak physical condition to withstand the heat
and punishing schedule, they must also be prepared mentally.
