CHAPTER - 5

CLASS V
Q 1.WHAT IS ORGAN SYSTEM? GIVE 2 EXAMPLES.

When many organs together perform a particular

function, they are called an organ system.
E.g. Digestive system, Nervous system
Q2.WHAT IS THE SKELETAL SYSTEM? NAME THE LONGEST AND THE
SMALLEST BONE OF THE SYSTEM.

The skeletal system is the framework of bones that gives

support to our body. The human skeleton contains 206 bones.
Longest bone is femur or the thighbone and the smallest
bone is stirrup.
Q3.MENTION THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM AND
STATE THEIR FUNCTIONS.

The different parts of the skeletal system are :

 Skull— It acts like a helmet and protect the brain.
 Ribcage— It protects the heart and the lungs.
 Backbone— It surrounds and protects the spinal cord.
 Limbs (Arms and Legs)-- Help us in doing many activities and in
moving from one place to another.
Q4.WRITE ANY FOUR FUNCTIONS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM.

The four functions of the skeletal system are:

 It gives shape and support to our body.
 It protects the soft internal organs of our body like:
a) The skull protects the brain.
b) The backbone protects the spinal cord.
c) The ribcage protects the heart and the lungs.
 It allows the movement of different body parts.
 The hollow bones have bone marrow . Blood cells are made in the bone
marrow.
Q5.WHAT ARE JOINTS? NAME THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF JOINTS.
The meeting point of bones is called a joint. The joints help us to bend,
twist and turn.
There are two types of joints.
▪ Immovable joints and
▪ movable joints
NAME THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOVABLE JOINTS?
Movable joints are of four types.
 Ball and socket joints
 Hinge joint
 Pivot joint
 Gliding joint
Q6.WHAT ARE LIGAMENTS? WHAT DO THEY DO?

Ligaments are strong elastic tissues which are present in

the joints.
They hold the bones together at the joints.
Q7.WHAT ARE MUSCLES? NAME THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF
MUSCLES FOUND IN OUR BODY.
 The soft and stretchy band of tissues are called muscles.
 There are more than 600 muscles in our body and they perform
different functions.
 They tighten and relax, and help our joints in movement of our body.
 Muscles are attached to the bones by strong fibres which are called
tendons.
Muscles are of three different types :
a) Voluntary muscles b) Involuntary muscles c) Cardiac muscles.
Q8.DIFFERENCE BETWEEN:VOLUNTARY MUSCLES AND INVOLUNTARY
MUSCLES
VOLUNTARY MUSCLES INVOLUNTARY MUSCLES
1. The muscles that are under 1. The muscles that work on
our control are called their own are called
Involuntary or smooth muscles.
voluntary muscles.
2. The muscles that help in
2. Our arms, neck, shoulders breathing, movement of food in
and legs have voluntary the stomach and intestine and
muscles. in the flow of blood are
involuntary muscles .
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MOVABLE JOINTS AND IMMOVABLE JOINTS
MOVABLE JOINTS IMMOVABLE JOINTS

1, The joints that help 1.The joints that cannot be moved

in the movement of our are called immovable joints.
body are called movable
Joints. 2. The joint of the skull, the joints
2.There are four types between the ribcage and the breast
of movable joints in our body bone are immovable.
Hinge joint, ball and socket joint,
Pivot joint, gliding joint.
Example: Arms, legs
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HINGE JOINT AND BALL AND SOCKET JOINT
Hinge joint Ball and socket joint

1.It is like the hinge of a door 1.They allow movement in all

that helps the bones to move in directions. These joints help
one direction. They can only move in the maximum movement of
forward and backward. the body.

2. The elbows, knees, fingers and 2. The shoulder and hip regions
toes have hinge joins. have ball and socket joints.
Q10.WRITE A SHORT NOTE ON RIBS.

 The cage of bones around the chest is called the ribcage.

 The ribcage protects the heart and the lungs.
 It is made up of 12 pairs of thin-curved bones which are attached to
the backbone at the back and to a flat bone called sternum in the
front.
 The last two pairs of ribs are not attached to the sternum and hence
are called floating ribs.
Q11. DEFINE VERTEBRAL COLUMN.

 A series of small bones form the backbone of the human

body, these are called the vertebrae or the vertebral column.
 It is a strong column which is made of 33 small bones.
 The vertebrae are hollow in centre and protect the spinal
cord.
 The skull is attached to the spine or the backbone through
these vertebrae.
Q12. GIVE REASONS:
We can move our arms in circular motion but not our knees.
Why?
The shoulder region has ball and socket joint which allows
movement in all directions. While the joints in our knees are
hinge joints which only allows movement in one direction that is
forward and backward. Therefore, we can move our arms in
circular motion but not our knees.
We cannot walk around with a fractured femur. Why?
Femur is the longest and the most powerful bone of our body. It
bears the weight of our body. So we cannot walk around with a
fractured femur.
A broken rib is dangerous. Why?

A broken rib is dangerous because the sharp edge of the

broken bone can damage blood vessels or internal organs
such as lungs and heart.
