As Facilitators, it is important that we are ready with unique ideas that will bring freshness to
the class.
The fact that you have attached the detailed activities make the lesson more understandable
and easy to comprehend.
You can also attach relevant pictures and samples to make the lesson interesting.
Well done!!
B. Consider any 3 situations and discuss how you might handle them:
This situation is common. One of the underlying goals of any teacher is total participation. If
one or more students are not paying attention in the classroom, the possible reasons could be
as follows:
a. Doesn’t understand the material.
b. Lack of motivation and interest.
c. Distracted by external stimuli.
d. Mismatched learning style.
In this situation, teacher needs to find out a way to make learning relevant and valuable. Here
are six techniques I employ in my classroom to create a space that encourages participation
from students.
a. Connecting the topic to real life situation.
b. Activity oriented teaching. Interacting with students to keep them involved.
c. Give students choices.
d. Paying close attention to students so that they won’t feel unattended.
e. Moving in all around in the entire classroom to keep a check on student participation.
f. Different students have different learning styles: some learn best by seeing, some by
listening and others by doing. Teaching plan should cater to the need of all type of
students.
Ideally, the goal of increasing participation is not only to have each student to participate
in the same way or at same rate. Instead, it is to create an environment in which all
students have equal opportunities to learn.
2. A group of students come into the classroom after the lesson has begun.
Latecomers interrupt the flow of the class and can be distracting for both the teacher and the
other students. To deal with such type of situation, first of all, teacher should ensure whether
they are always behaving like this or not. If it so, find the reason behind this. Also, I would
set certain rules to deal with latecomers as follows:
a. Leave some empty chairs by the front or back doors for latecomers. Students who are late
are not allowed to go to their regular seats. They must take on of the “late seats” by the
door. This will prevent latecomers to disturb the whole class already in progress.
b. Always start the class with warmer activity; this will motivate the students to be on time.
c. Give the rest of the class some activity and in the meanwhile, utilize the time to
understand why the students were late and also to help them to understand what has been
covered so far.
d. Students can be asked to wait after class to cover the part of the lesson they have missed.
e. Consequences like mark an absent for two late arrivals.
Also, make them realize by coming late for the class they not only miss the important
framing of the lecture but also causing hindrance to classmate’s integrity by distracting
them.
3. You have assigned a task, and some of the students have already completed it, but
others are still working.
• In this situation, the ones who have completed their work, they can be appointed as
volunteers to assist their teacher in the completion of task of the entire class like book
collection, worksheet submission or even they can help peers those are still working.
• By getting appointed as leaders, the students not only become confident but also it boosts
their self-esteem and enhances the sense of responsibility in them.
• Eventually, the slow learners or the one who are disruptive by nature gets motivated to
complete their task on time. So, that next time they can get the chance to volunteer.
• We can ask the students to check their work for errors or even they can improve their work.
Set clear rules at the beginning of the school year and let your students know regarding
various essential disciplinary values.
I like your strategies and we must remember to use varied methods to bring out the best
from the students.
There could also be personal issues which hamper the concentration in class.
So, it is also a good idea to check if any external factor is affecting the performance.
The different strategies used are very good and I think they can help to bring out the best
from the students.
