When forming personal convictions, we often interpret factual evidence through the
filter of our values, feelings, tastes, and past experiences. Hence, most statements we make
in speaking and writing are assertions of facts, opinions, beliefs or prejudice.
A statement is an opinion if it involves the speaker’s emotion or feelings and cannot
be proven true.
If an opinion cannot be proven as true and a fact is true, a statement that is
somewhat true and somewhat false is called assertion. Assertion is a statement used to
make a declaration or to express strong belief on a particular topic. It can be formulated after
reading a story, or a poem, and even after watching a play.

Let’s Bear in Mind!

Read the short article below.

The reopening of classes despite the pandemic has been the subject of many debates. Many
are pushing for the education sector to skip this school year so no student gets left behind while a lot of
parents are also still willing to try how remote learning is going to work.
It’s no secret that remote learning poses a lot of challenges for many Filipino students. Buying a
laptop, computer, or even a tablet or mobile phone plus securing an internet connection aren’t
something that all Filipino parents can easily do for their children no matter how much they would like
to. Many lost their livelihoods due to the pandemic.
CHED and DepEd also recognize the toll that this new way of learning is taking on both the
students' and the teachers’ mental health. So apart from equipping them with tools, there are also
programs designed to help them become mentally-ready.

Conducting online classes today is ideal, there is no doubt about it, but ours
is considered a third world country. Having an online class is possible and but it is
never fair to all students especially those studying in public schools’ Online classes
are financially demanding and most likely, the majority of the learners' families
cannot cope with these demands.

The majority of the students in public schools do not have gadgets or fast-
internet service connections necessary for online classes. Teachers cannot just hold
these classes to a small number of the class only because most students have no
means to join. Those who are not privileged of sufficient income will be denied of the
learnings attained in activities and discussion.

Public schools can conduct online classes but it would be discriminating

because it is selective. The learning experiences would not be the same for
everybody and the poor will certainly be on the losing end.
