CASE STUDY 2
Questions
1. What is the first step that Nurse Conchita should take to prepare for her health-promotion
class?
Nurse Conchita needs to conduct a cultural assessment with the migrant group in which
she asks about their ethnic background, religious preferences, family patterns, cultural
values, language, education, and politics. This information will help Nurse Conchita
understand the migrant workers from their own point of view and to recognize their
uniqueness, thus avoiding stereotyping. When appropriate, Nurse Betty must use the
four modes of action for negotiating with the group and giving culturally competent
care: cultural preservation, cultural accommodation, cultural re-patterning, and culture
brokering.
2. What are the language barriers, specific risk factors, and traditional healing practices that
Nurse Conchita must be aware of if she is to successfully interact with the participants in
Gaswiling?
Because most of the migrant workers speak only their own language and Nurse
Conchita can speak only a little Tagalog ang lets say she is Spanish, a language barrier
exists then. Heart disease and obesity are associated with the foods Hispanics prefer.
Hispanics may seek an alternative healer called a curandero, espiritualista, or yerbero
for medical care. Nurse Conchita must consider these factors when advising about
health-promotion activities and interventions that the group would most likely use.
Nurse Conshita will also need to involve an interpreter to address the problem of the
language barrier. Since in Gaswiling the most language they are using are Ibaloi and
Ilocano language and not that much for Tagalog language.
3. How can Nurse Conchita involve the community to improve the effectiveness of her health-
promotion class?
Communities can help patients (and thus providers) with communication, explanation, crisis
intervention, emotional and other forms of support, and housing. Nurse Conchita must carefully
assess the community and learn what strengths, resources, and talents are available.
