CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
3.1 1.1 GENERAL
Building structures are solids, which are composed of architectural and structural parts.
Structural engineering is the study of how varies component elements of building act together to
form a supportive structure and transmit forces down to foundation.

4|Page
METTU UNIVERSITY

The structural part of the building supports the body of the building preventing it from any
collapse or failure. Therefore, structural design involves the determination of the different
sections of the skeletal part of the building to make it stable and sustainable throughout its design
life.

A structural design executed in such a way that the building will remain fit with appropriate
degrees of reliability and in an economic way. It should sustain all the actions and influences
during execution and use. Therefore, structural design focuses on structural safety and
serviceability with due durability. It must also optimize the cost expended in building the
structure and maintenance.
This structural design executed based on the Ethiopian Building Code of Practice (EBCS)
prepared in 1995 E.C. This code follows the Limit State design approach. Limit state is a state
beyond which the structure no longer satisfies the design performance requirements. It consists
of two states namely Ultimate Limit and serviceability Limit states. Ultimate Limit states are
conditions related with collapse or states prior to structural failure. Its main concern is the safety
of structure and people. Serviceability Limit states are those associated to conditions beyond
which a structure does not accomplish specified service requirements. It is mainly concerned
about the function of construction works, comfort of people, and appearance.

The prime objective of design is structural safety and serviceability. In case the structure fails, it
must be in such a way it will minimize risks and casualty. It must extend the time for evacuation
of people inside a building. This requirement of structural design accomplished by the principle
called ductility. Ductility allows yielding of steel reinforcement prior to the collapse of the
building. Yielding of steel bars warns the start of failure of a structure or its part. Therefore,
structures design to be reinforced by certain percent to assure ductility mode of failure if it
happens.

This project is G+7 with no basement and mezzanine building is located in Adama town. The
building compartments consist of living rooms, shops, studio etc. Therefore, it designed
according to EBCS 1 to 8, 1995 to fulfill the required functions and services.

The structure was analyzed as space frame using SAP2000 and ETABS 9.6 to collect all the
actions for each structure Finally, the structural members such as roof, stairs, beams, columns,
footings are designed using limit state design approach stated in EBCS published in 1995.

ROOF ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

A roof is the top covering of a building, including all materials and constructions necessary to
support it on the walls of the building or on uprights; it provides protection against rain, snow,
sunlight, extremes of temperature, and wind. A roof is part of the building envelope.

The characteristics of a roof are dependent upon the purpose of the building that it covers the
available roofing materials and the local traditions of construction and wider concepts of
architectural design and practiceand governed by local or national legislation.

Roofs divided as gable, hip, mansard, flat, butterfly and etc.in the case of our project the roof is
flat.

2.1 WIND LOAD ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Wind is a moving air, which in turn possesses energy, and this kinetic energy should been
resisted by using appropriate design for different kind of structural elements like roofs, walls.
The action of wind can be a type of suction or pressure to our structures both externally or
internally .however these effects are more magnified for structure with more openings and large
surface areas and we focus on sensitive part of the building that is roof (both du pitch and solid
slab roofs)
The intensity of wind pressure depends on:
 Shape of the structure
 Velocity of air
 Density of air
 Stiffness of structure and
 Angle of the induced wind.
For our project, we used EBCS-1, 1995 for the determination of wind load. Since the height of
our building is less than 200m and dynamic coefficient C d < 1.2, the simple procedures the
Ethiopian building code standardize applied.
Wind pressures, both external and internal, are determined as per section 3.5 of the code;
External pressure (We)
We = qrefCe (Ze) Cpe…………….. (EBCS-1, 3.1)
Where: qref - is the reference wind pressure
Ce (Ze) - is exposure coefficient
Cpe - is the external pressure coefficient

2.2 REFERENCE WIND VELOCITY

The reference wind velocity for a locality defined as the mean wind velocity at 10m above
farmland averaged over a period of 10 minutes with a return period of 50 years. It calculated
using.

Vref =CDIR*CTEM*CALT*Vref, 0……………. (EBCS-1, 3.7)

Where: Vref,0 is the basic reference wind velocity 10m above sea level
: CDIR, CTEM and CALT are factors relating to direction, seasonal variations in temporary
structures and altitude respectively.
Taking the three coefficients as unity CDIR = 1.0, CTEM =1.0 and CALT=1.0
Vref,0= 22 m/s
Thus:Vref=1*1*1* 22 m/s
= 22 m/s
The reference mean wind velocity pressure is given by: (EBCS: 1, 3.7.1)
Where: ρ is the air density
For our case, Adama is located in the Great Rift Valley zone at an elevation or altitude of 1712m
in East Shewa.
Therefore; According to EBCS 1, 1995, table 3.1: ρ= 0.974kg/m 3,by using interpolation for the
altitude of 1712m between altitude of 1500m and 2000m for Adama town.
Table 1.1 Air Density

Site altitude (m) above sea level ρ(kg/m3)

0 1.20
500 1.12
1000 1.06
1500 1.00
2000 0.94

Finally we get by interpolation ρ=0.974(kg/m3)

qref = 0.5*0.974kg/m3*22m/s2
= 0.23571kPa.

2.3 EXPOSURE COEFFICIENT

Takes into account the effects of terrain roughness, topography and height above ground on the
mean wind speed and turbulence.

It is defined by:Ce(z) = Cr2(z)Ct2(z){1+[7KT/(Cr(z)Ct(z))]}………..(EBCS-1,3.15)

1,3.15)
Where: KT is terrain factor.
: Cr (z) is the roughness coefficient.
: Ct (z) is the topography coefficient, we assumed the structure is Topography unaffected
and taken to be unity.
According to EBCS: 1 table 3.2 Adama is under Terrain category four:
KT = 0.24,
Zo (m) = 1 and
Zmin = 16m
Since the actual height of the building, for roof one Z = 24m, is between Z min and 200m, we use
the following formula for the calculation of the roughness coefficient.
Cr(z)= KT ln(Z/Z0) For ≤ z ≤ 200 m EBCS: 1 equation 3.1
Cr(z)=0.24ln (24/1) =0.736

Ct (z) =1 for Փ<0.05

Ce(z) = Cr2(z)Ct2(z){1+[7KT/(Cr(z)Ct(z))]}=0.7362*12*{1+[7*0.24/(0.736*1)]}=1.236

2.4 EXTERNAL WIND PRESSUR

We= qref Ce(z) Cpe……….…...Equation (3.1)

Cpe: - Is the external pressure coefficient for buildings and individual parts of buildings

Loaded are is the area of the structure, which produces the wind action in the section to be
calculated and as per the code Cpe it is given as;

2.7.1 Design load calculation

 For panel 1 (S1): DL=5.63KN/m2

LL=0.5 KN/m2

Pd=1.3*5.63 KN/m2+ 0.5 KN/m2 =8.119 KN/m2

 For panel 2 (S2): DL=5.63KN/m2

LL=0.5 KN/m2

Pd=1.3*5.63 KN/m 2+ 0.5 KN/m2 =8.119 KN/m2

The design load of all panels becomes the same because the roof slab has the same;

 service
 depth
 live load this tends the slab to have the same design load throughout all panels.

2.7.2 Moment Analysis

Moment Calculation for two way slab using coefficient method

 The first stage of design is to determine support and span moments for all panels.
 The support and span moments are calculated as

Where, Mi=Design moment per unit width of reference

Pd=Uniformly Distributed Design Load

i=Coefficient given in table A-1

2.7.4 Moment adjustment

A. Support moment adjustment
At every span lengths there is the application of two support moments which are either the same
or different in magnitude. Practically it is difficult to provide different reinforcement to
overcome the effect these moments.to get a single and balanced support moment an adjustment
is required for each span length.

B. Field moment Adjustments

An adjustment for the field moment is required when the support moment is decreased. Because
the decrease in the support moment indicates that some amount of moment is flown to the field.
This leads to the difference in the actual moment and the provided.to remove this problem
moment adjustment is required.

If the support moment is no need of adjustment for the field moment.

The adjustment is carried out using moment adjustment coefficients in accordance with the
provision of EBCS.

For S1 no need of adjustment why because the support moment increased rather than decreasing
this implies there is no moment flow to the field.

For cantilevers no need of support moment adjustment. Mostly cantilevers has maximum amount
of moment than the moment encountered from side slab panels. Making adjustment between
these maximum moment differences creates;
 high moment reduction from the cantilever side and
 high increment in the panel side

This completely disrupt the moment, to control this disruption the maximum moment is selected
and reinforcement is provided.

2.7.6 Load Transfer

Loads cannot remains on the slab but transferred to the beam in case of shear. The total load
cannot transferred to the beam as a shear and to apply this, the design load is multiplied by some
factors called shear coefficients. Shear coefficients are dependent on the support condition and
Ly/Lx ratio of the panel, which the load transferred
In transferring the unfactored live load and dead load, transferred separately.

In case of our project, the load transferring mechanism calculated below:

CHAPTER THREE

SLAB DESIGN
3.2 INTRODUCTION
There are two types of slabs based on the load transferring mechanisms. These are one
way and two-way slabs. If Ly/Lx>2 one-way and Ly/Lx≤2 two way where Ly is longer
span and Lx is shorter span.
One-way slab transmit their load in one direction while two-way slabs resist applied load
in two directions.
These types of slabs are composed of rectangular panels supported at all four edges by
beams and are stiff enough to be treated as unyielding.
The reinforcement bar, in one-way slab, main steel is provided along with short span only
and the load is transferred to two opposite supports and in two-way slab, main steel is
provided in both directions.

3.2.1 COMPUTATION OF DEPTH FOR DEFLECTION

Depth for deflection, d is
Where; d = minimum depth for deflection in mm
βa= the appropriate constant which is a function of the boundary condition and span
ratio. It is given on table 5.1 of EBCS-2 1995
Fyk = the characteristic strength of the reinforcement bar (Mpa)
Le = the effective span, for two way slab the shorter span (m)

3.2.2 Design Loadfor Each Panels

Since an individual panel might have different purpose (function) and finishing material, we
might encounter different live load and dead load in a single panel. In such cases, we used the
maximum value as a governing dead load or live load for that panel.

Moment Analysis using coefficient method

Case I: Moment Calculation for Two way slab using coefficient method

 The first stage of design is to determine support and span moments for all panels.
 The support and span moments are calculated as
𝑀𝑖 = 𝛼𝑖𝑃𝑑𝐿𝑥2 , EBCS-2, 1995, Page 108
Where Mi=Design moment per unite width of reference

Pd=Uniformly Distributed Design Load

𝛼 i=Coefficient given in table A-1 as a function of𝐿𝑦/𝐿𝑥 and Support condition

𝑀 =𝛼 ∗ 𝑃𝑑 ∗ 𝐿𝑥
𝑀 =𝛼 ∗ 𝑃𝑑 ∗ 𝐿𝑥
𝑀 =𝛼 ∗ 𝑃𝑑 ∗ 𝐿𝑥

LOAD TRANSFER
The live and dead Loads on the slab does not remains on the slab. Transferred to the beams in
case of shear force. The total load cannot transferred to the beam as shear. This is maintained by
the use of shear coefficients. Shear coefficients are dependent on the span ratio and support
condition of the panels. For the cantilevers the load is transferred in terms of reactions. Because
the load is assumed as to transferred in one direction for one-way cantilevers.

3.5 WALL LOAD TRANSFER
Load of the wall, which exist on the axis of the beam transfer directly to the beam as a weight.

This led us to transfer without the use of any shear coefficients.

Wwall=length of the wall*height of the wall*thickness*unit weight of HCB wall

=Length*height*thickness*γhcb

Where; - γhcb= 14KN/m3

All loads tabulated in a tabular form as follows below
